yes J will was quite the passer and his handles were at times the best..He made so many and cheer with his ways..He found a ring with D wade and Shaq..
He was always considered like a mid tier PG, good at handling the ball and adequate scoring, and I think some people might have been over enamored with his really flashy handling skills and passes and stuff, but he was never considered in the same league as someone like a Jason Kidd for example. I think at his peak, Jason Williams could be seen as something of a poor man's Jason Kidd, but Kidd was better for a lot longer, he didn't take the risks that Williams did that you mention either. Also, Mike Bibby was a lot better than him as well, Bibby could shoot the lights out, wasn't much of a passer but overall a way more effective basketball player and a huge part of the Kings' success. When Bibby and Peja got hot from beyond the arc, they could just absolutely destroy your team in short order. Those Kings are the ones I remember a lot more than the Jason Williams era Kings.
Agreed. Jason Williams was A LOT more talented than Bibby. But Bibby had something Jason never had. A high IQ. Which made him the better point guard. I was a huge Jason Williams fan and would go out of my way to watch his games. Yet if I owned a franchise I'd take Bibby over Jason at the drop of a hat.
In someways I agree.. But folks from all over just loved the kings in Jason’s era there.. The Princeton offence and their ability to pass the ball Made this team a team to watch.. Jason’s passes were put on highlight reels.. You listen to teammates tell stories of him is great.. Shaq, Christie, divac, and especially Webber always said his passes were off the scale..The players who played with him said it was beyond fun and helped team bonds.. So in so many ways J will was a highly rated player and his influence has changes the whole league in many ways.. Ball handling today is way better than the old days and it fills arenas..
@@terrytenley9404 Fun yes but probably a coach's nightmare considering the insane amount of bad shots, bad decisions and turnovers by Jason in big games.
Anyone who witnessed him at the time knows he wasn't a top 10 point guard in the league. He wasn't ever considered great by any stretch, he had great court vision, but extremely Immature at times, and very questionable decision making... he was perfect for the Kings, and perfect for the time... Right after Jordan retired, amid the new young highlight players of the early 00's (Vince, Kobe, T-Mac, Iverson, etc.) Not sure I'd really call him a legend? But he was most certainly a fan favorite, and really fun to watch! Him and Webber were iconic, and even though he toned down the flashiness, he and a young (and agile) Pau Gasol were just as fun a duo at times! I think his influence is more imprinted in the basketball/streetball culture, more than any lasting legacy in the league. But J-Dub was my favorite player as a kid, and still a favorite of mine 20+ years later!
Honestly the league needs more players like J Will. When you view the NBA as an entertainment business, which it is, these are the kinds of guys that people like to watch. Flashy, innovative, and has an edge that many other players don't have. As well as the fact that he is 6' or so is much more appealing to the general public. Watching 7' guys do boring dunks, and average guards chucking up 10-15 3 pointers per game isn't very entertaining anymore. While I respect guys like Tim Duncan and Giannis, I don't think they are as entertaining to watch as guys like J Will. I don't think he was overrated.
He's not overrated at all lol. He's rated for his passing abilities, nobody ever thought he was a top tier point guard, he was a serviceable and *fun* player for a team to have on the roster
Agreed. Definitely overrated but still a lot of fun to watch. I mean, they dont give you an extra point for a fancy assist, no matter how spectacular it is (and he had many 😂). But still worth buying a ticket to see him play live even though your team would prob lose if they gave him major minutes. Great video!
You were pretty hard JW, he crushed it, even towards the end of his career when most players are riding pine at that stage of their careers, he was starting for the Heat, then played in all 82 games for Orlando and all 14 playoff games, you mentioned several times about his "declining" skill set but yet still manages to put up decent numbers, almost "all star" worthy as you mentioned, you mentioned how he was a "phenomenal talent undoubtedly" and a 'great player no doubt" but yet you say he didn't improve his entire career, and bad mouthed him pretty good, and in the Twilight of his career he gets traded to Miami, he wins and contributed to a championship, then starts point guard for them the next two seasons, I don't give a crap how bad the team is, if you're starting for a team in the NBA, no matter what position, you're badass, I like your channel, I'm a subscriber, I just felt you were a little close-minded on this segment

I remember watching the NBA as a kid around J Will's hot years, I didn't really get stats at that age but players like him is what got me into the game for life!
I hated the kings, but for a time, Jason Williams was my favorite point guard. He may not have done crazy things statistically, but he was an icon back then.
He wasnt really "rated" that high to be considered overrated. He was decent PG that had a fun style of play and flashy streetball style..now he was very popular in the late 90's early 2000's, he had a top 5 selling jersey with the kings his first 2 or 3 years in the league. The whole league knew how limited he was. SAC became a legit contender once they got mike bibby.
He only played half a season in the 99 season lol. He played no other season in the 90s. He struck flame 2000-2002. When he got to Memphis under Hubie he changed style
For a guy that you expect the worse, when it comes to out of court antics, he was very grounded or mature. He didn’t get in a lot of trouble and the one that did was just mild
Yeah, we didn't really overrate him at the time, but his play was so packageable for social media that it's now a herculean task talking some sense into these young cats lol... btw, Andre Miller was probably the #10 PG in 2008 because Andre Miller was ALWAYS the #10 PG haha
His jaw dropping highlight passes and crossover, and its global impact is what makes him highly rated. OVERRATED is an oversttement. Misinterpreting impact as overrated tsk....We all know hes good but not great.
100% agreed .. 💯.. extremely over rated now .. the internet has made him look like a better more effective player than he was in the NBA .. everybody loves highlights and flashy crap .. show over substance lol .. one reason why the top players in the NBA today are foreigners ..
I don't think he is overrated. He was a starting PG in a champion team, if he was just fluff and a joke Miami would not take him. I think you think everyone had bigger opinion on him then they did. He was never considered a star but a really good player with cool moves.
I'm not sure how people remember him today but during this time he wasn't overrated at all. He was widely known as one of the most exciting players in the league but also known to not be a productive point guard and one you certainly would have serious trouble winning a championship with. Average production amazing entertainment. Not sure that is over or underrating him. But maybe these days kids are hyping him up, who knows.
I would hardly say Williams was overrated. He was never a superstar. What he did to was help revive a franchise that had been horrible for years. And his creativity brought back the fun back with his passing skills. Although he would at times take stupid 3 pointers out of nowhere...he was a key part of the kings making it to the playoffs.
He wasn't overrated while he was playing. It's just the hyperbolic morons who feel the need to bray GOAT and LEGEND at everything they see that makes him seem overrated now.
I think he just came at the right time. When the league NEEDED this spark. Not to mention.. he did come in the league around the same time “and 1” was getting big in basketball. A lot of those moves translated into the league
I don't think anyone says he's an all time great, he's beloved because he represented a team, that had generally been bad and was accustomed to having high draft picks that were just total busts, swiftly become a playoff team and then a contender and remember that Sacramento was playing a style of basketball that was fun to watch at a time when almost every other team was mostly playing iso ball on offense and grinding it out defensively (which means being fairly conservative on offense in order to minimize transition opportunities).
Efficiency is a false number because he made passes where it created wide open opportunities for his teammates unlike other point guards. His defense was his weakness.
I wonder if the Kings would get the “small market” treatment in the playoffs if Williams was around. The flashy fan favorite might have prevented it even though Bibby was a better fit.
Jason Williams was extremely skilled and he’s got a ring. He’s rated exactly where he belongs. Not a legend. Not even a hall of famer really, but he had more heart than anyone else when he was on the court. His style of playing is iconic He’s not on Kobe level. He’s not even on AI level. But he is a one of a kind
Williams wasn't rated that highly in his own playing days, but as with a lot of players the revisionist history is strong. You throw out his NBA mixtapes to a bunch of young kids and before you know it the next generation is calling him the "illest white boy of all time".
Anyone claiming White Chocolate was overrated doesn’t know what they’re talking about. He played 12 years on 8 playoff teams, 7 as a starter & has a ring. Getting the kings to play high level basketball was no small feat, especially when Webber didn’t want to be there until he realized how much Divacs & Williams would help him. In Williams 3 years as a King they ranked #1 in ppg all 3 years & got better on D every year, ranking 13th in his final year as a King. After being traded for Bibby, they never ranked higher than 17th in D & also never ranked #1 in O ever again. His willingness to share the ball kept teammates alert & encouraged them to create TOs. If the kings would’ve traded Adelman instead of Williams, the kings would have a ring too.
He was never all nba 1st 2nd or 3rd team once. I wouldnt say overrated but if you watched him you always saw some special plays. He was a fun change of pace to watch back then. Plus the AND ONE were big back in that time
He might have been comparable as a passer to Maravich, but he wasn't half the offensive talent Pete was. He did have talent but being a bit of a knucklehead he never achieved his full potential.
I don't think anybody rates J-Will as a star, he was never an All Star either despite the voting was purely on fans back then. People enjoyed watching him play and who wouldn't? He was like a streetball player playing in the NBA and by no means a scrub.
Overrated by people who didn't see him play.. if you watched him play you know he was a semi serviceable role player in his early days with turnover problems.. he was heat and electricity off of the bench.. later in his career he became a serviceable role player who could ignite an offense in spurts.. he was ok.. not good, not bad.. he was serviceable
I wouldn’t say overrated I would say he fits more into the what if. Can anybody who watched him play say he got the most out of his talent? I don’t think so I think he could of mixed more of his flash with production.
Mike Bibby is waaaaaaaaaay better than jwill.. Bibby was a floor general who could run an offense and knock down shots and even create shots at times.. jwill was 1 dementional
Yeah definitely wasn't Kwame Brown, Jimmer Fredette, Adam Morrison, Hasheem Thabeet, Darko, Greg Oden, ect. It was totally the starting point guard who helped teams to the playoffs and won a ring as a starting point guard.
If something Williams was an underrated PG by basketball bureaucrats that hated everything unusual like most of the people does. He was also a solid PG under Hubie brown with one of the best assists per turnover ratios in a time were defence and low scoring was THE WAY. He won a championship been the starting Pg with a very relevant role on the finals. By today pathetic NBA quality basketball standards he will be a star lol.
Williams isn’t really overrated I do t hear anyone ever talking about him as a great, just as a guy who made a lot of highlight plays. I’d argue that the title of this video should go to Allen Iverson but that’s just me

@@swishcountyproductions it’s a good look at him. He’s my favorite player but I’d be lying if I said he was ever very efficient. Keep up the good work I love your channel. You got a patron?
Don’t got a patreon maybe in the future but for rn just watching the videos helps a ton man!
yes J will was quite the passer and his handles were at times the best..He made so many and cheer with his ways..He found a ring with D wade and Shaq..
Right after Jordan retired, amid the new young highlight players of the early 00's (Vince, Kobe, T-Mac, Iverson, etc.)
Not sure I'd really call him a legend? But he was most certainly a fan favorite, and really fun to watch!
Him and Webber were iconic, and even though he toned down the flashiness, he and a young (and agile) Pau Gasol were just as fun a duo at times!
I think his influence is more imprinted in the basketball/streetball culture, more than any lasting legacy in the league. But J-Dub was my favorite player as a kid, and still a favorite of mine 20+ years later!
Great video man!!
Preciate ya 🤘
Champion and icon. Had a great career
Swish County is the perfect name for your channel because each video is nothing but NET!!!!!
My guy 🤘
In my opinion he just had that blue collar attitude who brought his lunch pale to work. Played the game the right way, sneaky athlete too
The traveling is absurd...
He's not overrated at all lol. He's rated for his passing abilities, nobody ever thought he was a top tier point guard, he was a serviceable and *fun* player for a team to have on the roster
Had he played under D’Antoni… That would be different story. Imagine him playing for suns.
If that happens Suns don't have their mid 2000s run
😂
Valid criticisms probably could’ve articulated my thoughts better but no do overs on RUclips. Preciate the feedback without insulting my whole existence lol
He’s not overrated he’s for some nice passing skills that’s all he’s really talked about for
I remember watching the NBA as a kid around J Will's hot years, I didn't really get stats at that age but players like him is what got me into the game for life!
I hated the kings, but for a time, Jason Williams was my favorite point guard. He may not have done crazy things statistically, but he was an icon back then.
Still is man, very talented no doubt
He wasnt really "rated" that high to be considered overrated. He was decent PG that had a fun style of play and flashy streetball style..now he was very popular in the late 90's early 2000's, he had a top 5 selling jersey with the kings his first 2 or 3 years in the league. The whole league knew how limited he was. SAC became a legit contender once they got mike bibby.
He only played half a season in the 99 season lol. He played no other season in the 90s. He struck flame 2000-2002. When he got to Memphis under Hubie he changed style
Yeah I also think him not having a coach who appreciated his style hammered his growth. I wish he could of mixed his flash with his production
Nobody said he was a top-tier player but he was a fan favorite fs because of his streetball style passing and dribbling
Shaq, who played with a ridiculous number of players said Williams was the best passer he ever played with
He definitely made some passes that few guys coulda made
For a guy that you expect the worse, when it comes to out of court antics, he was very grounded or mature.
J Will earned a ring ....that's more than a lot of guys can say. No way he's overrated just because people appreciate his sauce.
Shaq says in his first book that he’s one of the top 5 best white players ever (around 2002). That’s overrated lol
Wasn’t overrated he was just fun to watch
And I never give a thumbs down to creators, yet you earned one here
Why thank you
I'm not sure how people remember him today but during this time he wasn't overrated at all.
I always thought J-Will was so overrated, even while he was playing. Most fans see flash and mistake it for greatness
I think it’s all guys that fall into that category, same with Jamal Crawford
He wasn't overrated while he was playing. It's just the hyperbolic morons who feel the need to bray GOAT and LEGEND at everything they see that makes him seem overrated now.
Lol I’d agree with that somewhat
I think he just came at the right time. When the league NEEDED this spark. Not to mention.. he did come in the league around the same time “and 1” was getting big in basketball. A lot of those moves translated into the league
Later in his career, in Miami, he settled down and had higher shooting percentages and way less turnovers. Go look at his stats.
Said that in the video lol
I don't think anyone says he's an all time great, he's beloved because he represented a team, that had generally been bad and was accustomed to having high draft picks that were just total busts, swiftly become a playoff team and then a contender and remember that Sacramento was playing a style of basketball that was fun to watch at a time when almost every other team was mostly playing iso ball on offense and grinding it out defensively (which means being fairly conservative on offense in order to minimize transition opportunities).
Efficiency is a false number because he made passes where it created wide open opportunities for his teammates unlike other point guards. His defense was his weakness.
He had all of the passing of Maravich but none of the scoring
I wonder if the Kings would get the “small market” treatment in the playoffs if Williams was around. The flashy fan favorite might have prevented it even though Bibby was a better fit.
We have to remember in this era efficiency didn’t mean anything and u had people chucking up 25-30 shots a game shooting like 25-35 percent
Jason Williams was extremely skilled and he’s got a ring. He’s rated exactly where he belongs. Not a legend. Not even a hall of famer really, but he had more heart than anyone else when he was on the court. His style of playing is iconic
He’s not on Kobe level.
I did not realize they were still making new games for the PS3 anymore. I can't wait...
Plus the AND ONE were big back in that time
He’s like the White AI if AI was mid and actually passed more.
That’s only because people don’t watch games now. It’s only highlights.
My favorite player of all time
All I know is he will go down as having one of the deepest bags in NBA history. That’s his legacy
AI is the superstar version of him, really flashy and beloved but bad efficiency.
White Iverson.
He was flashy but inefficient, like a copy of lance stephenson but more focused on passing rather than scoring
You can’t be overrated if no one saying you top 10, even Jason Williams doesn’t think he’s that good
White chocolate was pretty solid. He wasn’t a hall of famer but he wasn’t a scrub either.
only someone who knows nothing about basketball would call jason williams overrated.
"do you remember the Vietnam war?" Haaaaaahahaha that's really crazy
I don't know if he is underrated or overrated, but I enjoyed watching him at his best.
Baron Davis, Allen Iverson and Jason Williams were my top guards to watch in the early 2000's.
Mike bobby better team player
@@Go4Broke247 who the fuck is Mike Bobby?
He might have been comparable as a passer to Maravich, but he wasn't half the offensive talent Pete was. He did have talent but being a bit of a knucklehead he never achieved his full potential.
Jordan McCabe would’ve been the next Jason Williams
the most entertaining player to watch, and settled to be servicable towards the later half of his career. Popular, but not overrated at all.
you're confusing overrated with a player having a fun skillset people like to watch.
I don't think anybody rates J-Will as a star, he was never an All Star either despite the voting was purely on fans back then. People enjoyed watching him play and who wouldn't? He was like a streetball player playing in the NBA and by no means a scrub.
Overrated? No, not really. I don't think anybody was saying he was Kobe. One of my favorite players as a kid? ABSOLUTELY!!!
Yeah I’d agree most people who did much more than watch highlights can find he wasn’t all that effective
You forgot to mention how he joined Ice Cubes B I G 3 league & got injured his first game
Mike Bibby was the team player that Kings needed.
I’d argue that the title of this video should go to Allen Iverson but that’s just me
I don't care if he was overrated or not. He was fun to watch.
Very overrated indeed, just because you’re flashy doesn’t mean you’re really shit.
He was the exact opposite of Stockton.
5:29 Less talented? Basketball IQ is a talent. Clutch shot making is a talent. Neither of those JWill had. Both JWill’s were a tremendous disappointment.
He was suppose to inspire more of us white boys but we rather think we can be allen Iverson
