The 2023 ID4 is made in TN and until Dec 31 2022 if bought is eligible for the full 7.5k federal tax credit vs the Q4 which is NOT eligible: this is in the USA. Availability for the ID4 is pretty good in USA with dealers having some order cancellations and selling at MSRP. So in USA the price gap might be as much as 15k… In Canada both are eligible not the Q4 Sportback… but good luck finding one until a year… with all the tax credits and the supply focused on the USA, Canada has been left out….
I'm for the simplicity of the ID.4! The complaints I hear in this video about some of the ID.4 features I'm totally fine with like the windows and the shifter. I think it could be a generational preference on a lot of things and that's fine. The ID.4 is already criticized heavily when compared to other competitive EV makes/models at this price level for their charging setup being too slow; so hearing that the Q4 is even slower, AND with less range, AND with less torque boggles my mind for a luxury brand. It was once the innovative vehicle for electric (outside of Tesla) but is now beaten and lags compared to other EV'S. IMO, the Q4 is already outdated in the motor and battery sector but if the shiny exterior and physical buttons is what appeals someone, then go for it.
Happy with the ID.4 AWD S.Package after 5 months of ownership. The semi minimalistic interior is a perfect balance. Infotainment systems is easy to use after a few weeks driving the vehicle. I personally like the look of the ID.4 than the Q4. The door handles on the ID.4 is also sleek and easy to open.
Good comparison! Given the small price difference the Q4 seems to make the most sense, however standard safety features would be the deciding factor. If lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and fwd/aft collision braking are not included as standard with the Audi, then it would be the ID4.
I've seen 1 ID4 in downtown Toronto and 1 Q4. The OEMs are intentionally avoiding deliveries to Canada imo. They make more by sending them anywhere but here. The wait times are beyond stupid. 18 months. You are either a EV fanatic or you aren't. And I think you have to really want a BEV to put up with the extra pain in the butts to buy one. The charging rates at the fast chargers have gone up a lot too. Meh, I think I'd get a V60 wagon PHEV or a NX PHEV which have a good in city range now and then you don't have to worry about long distances. They get the 5k gov't discount as well.
I have a Q4 e-tron quattro for a month now. Love it and easy decision in Canada since both ID.4 loaded and Q4 are very close in price, and i prefer the German made vehicle.
In the US, the price difference is actually **much** more significant. I can't find a Q4 under 60k to save my life, most are 65k. Meanwhile, the ID 4 is readily available at 52k, and qualifies for 7500 off. ID4 much better buy in the US
You are 100% correct, everyone is completely off on the price. The Audi's are way more expensive and our Audi dealer is slapping at $5k markup on every model. So the price comparison is far more in favor of the VW then is portrayed in the quotes given in the video.
I have a friend that ordered the ID4 with AWD & the statement package. He noticed the lower trims of the Q4 are about the same price. It has a nicer interior, real buttons, a better infotainment system (more intuitive & likely with less bugs) and probably a higher resale value. He changed his order to the Q4. On the other hand, the ID4 is the better fit if affordability matters to you and you don't plan on getting the statement package.
As you said the EV market is so similar with some elements. What about a multi EV shootout. The outcome should show best for value, or range, or for the city, or features or technology.. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that
ID4 for me because more cargo space. However I want to know the best family + car camping vehicle available in BEV. If you need a topic for the future.
As per usual you guys are excellent. Great review. Packages packages lol that stood out the most to me. What are the manufacturers thinking. Make it easier not harder. Anyways keep up the good work guys. Can't wait for the Crv review.
How can you compare the 2? The cost difference WHEN you get all the options the ID.4 has to the Audi is not minimal like Andrea stated. If you want entry level Audi, then fine but you miss out on all the other options. Also, Andrea, get over the shifter!
Excellent review. I think if you want faster charging and more free charging from the maker, you choose VW id4. If you just need/want the luxury brand and cannot step over, the Audi q4 etron. I really want to want the Audi, but worse charging makes a major part of the car a problem. I would just miss the luxury car thing. I actually like VW’s non integrated screen. I think much nicer and more modern. So hard a decision!
Currently ID.4 for 2023 does not have 360 camera and premium sound due to chip shortage. Even though it is on the list, you can’t order them. It is a bit cheaper though.
I think one thing missing from this is that the price is WAY different than what you are saying. So the Pro S+ which we have on order is 54k USD, The Audi eTron 50 that we are getting quoted is 64k USD + a 5k dealer markup for 69k USD. That is a 15K difference in cost and the eTron has less in every spec category except the audio (the VW audio system is quite a bit less quality than the eTron but not worth 15k). At the end of the day I think the eTron misses for me. It's too dated in and too close to the old Q5, it's not bringing a real EV design aesthetic and is too similar to gas powered cars. The rear looks like a RAV4 or a Venza, really disappointing. So I am sticking with our ID4 order and feel it really outpaces the eTron in all departments. But I like minimalism and unfussy design.
Still waiting for the large electric SUVs. Rivian, Hummer are the only ones. The latter cant drive on motorways in Europe and the former cant be bought in Europe. The Volvo EX and/or Mercedes EQS aren't really my cup of tea.
All things being basically equal, I would probably lean towards the Audi. My illogical reasoning is based on the fact that ever since my first experience with the infamously problematic Audi 5000S Turbo Avant… I absolutely loved them.. those 5000s (parents drove a boring, by comparison, ‘83 MB Diesel (W126 -S-class)). The Audi looked like it was from the future, with it’s fancy AWD Quattro system and that aerodynamic shape (and the Avant, being ‘almost’ an Estate). But I’ve never owned an Audi. So because I’ve had a few VW’s, I’d lean towards the Audi. Hardly the best logic perhaps, but at least this new Audi would be less problematic than me buying a used Allroad, an RS6 or worse… a well used A8/S8 (which I’ve come too close to doing, twice!). Plus… I’ve always loved the Auto Union’s choice of four rings, as their brand badging. That and … let’s not forget their smartly put together interiors. Thanks for another comparison video.
Looking forward to another interesting comparison and once again all electric. Interested to see if both Zack and you Andrea feel, you're any closer to all electric Shangri-la? I suspect you're closer to this view than Zack?, though I stand corrected Andrea.
I would want the clean modernism of the ID.4 but with physical controls like the Q4. One thing that bugs me is the huge fake grill on the Q4, it's a "skeuomorphism" that is like like how iOS used to look like pre-iOS7.
GV60 is a lot nicer, it feels much more luxurious for sure but it starts at $71,000 CAD. It doesn't qualify for the Federal EV rebate and it's just too expensive for many. I like it a lot and would choose it over the Q4 if I had a bigger budget.
The gv60 is a brokie Hyundai, go back to the Kia Tesla ford ev range brokie. The q4 etron is a 78k ev for rich CEOs, not some wanna be luxury ev genesis. Get more money and buy urself a real luxury ev like the q4 and macan e. (I drive a 2022 m5 comp matte black and 2024 cayenne s hybrid pebble grey)
If in US the prices are not quoted correctly in this video. The Audi's are going at $65k with markups added on, putting them about $15k more than the VW fully loaded. The Audi definitely is more refined, so then it's down to whether you value the Audi's aesthetic for a whopping $15k more, if the VW qualifies for the tax credit then $22k more (Audi doesn't so far)
I have had my ID4 for about 10 months in the lower mainland and love it so far. A few notes to your video, 2023 models have a different centre console, heat pump is optional on all trims where as the 2021, 2022 it did come standard in Canada. 2023 are mainly manufactured in TN now so the N American style centre console in on all models.
I was going to say same thing about the nicer console being on 2023 id4s. I recently drove it and thought it was impressive. And I currently drive a luxury suv/crossover.
Q4 for me but I’m biased😮😂 Had my 40 S-Line for a year now and it’s been fantastic. Monthly cost was virtually identical for these two and their Skoda Enyaq cousins (also on the MEB platform) but we preferred the HVAC and infotainment setup in the Q4. Great comparison guys 👍🏻🏴
Great review, I wish I’d seen it when it first came out. We have had an ID4 on order since December of 2021 and it’s due to arrive by the end of May 2023. It was built in Chattanooga, rather than Germany. We ordered it with the heat pump, but we’re advised a few weeks ago that, due to supply chain problems, VW is no longer able to offer the heat pump. We still like the ID4 and are sticking with it, but I think that after seeing your review, if we seen it when it first came out, we might have switched to the Audi at one of the points that VW has given us to cancel our order over the past year and a half.
How much is the Sonos Audio a la carte item on the premium trim? I was given a 2022 spec sheet from the Audi DT Vancouver, But really liked the idea of getting that audio for premium / progressive trim?
Nice comparison. Test drove both, and Q4 was an easy winner IMO. The interior, infotainment system, and driving experience really justified the price difference.
The Tennessee factory in now online and operational. Inventories in the USA have increased. It's obvious on the road and at the VW dealerships inventory. I am not sure if the new factory produces the Q4 as of yet. The Tennessee USA made id 4's do qualify for both federal and state rebates (2023 forward),(inflation reduction act, nov. 22).
I do agree with you regarding that the Q4 more resembles to a conventional car. Buttons, looks inside and all that. Ordered my Q4 45 e-tron Proline (Sweden) yesterday and will receive it 1th March ✌️
Looking at vw canada buid and price it looks like the statement package got cheaper from $5000 to $4700, looking further into it they have removed the updated digital audio with subwoofer due to chip shortage which is not a deal breaker
I was quite surprised and pleased by the ID4 that I test drove yesterday. I do think I like to drive or the ionic 5 a little bit better but affordability feature wise and the ability to actually get the ID4 is my leading EV right now
One thing to note if you're in the U.S., Volkswagen started building the ID4 in Tennessee in late July. Those cars will qualify for the full $7500 tax credit. The foreign-made Audi Q4 will not qualify for any tax credit, making a big difference in comparing the two cars, pricewise.
Great review and compare both vehicles. I would go the Q4 for a beautiful interior and exterior design that looks like a gas vehicle. Price maybe a little high but it might be worth it. Thanks for sharing Andrea! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️
