I think the Toyota uses a different battery chemistry, lithium iron phosphate to go after the long life. Less energy dense but more durable. Your comments on charging speed may also be correct
In Norway bz4x comes with 150kw quickcharger. In The fall it will come with 11kw onboard charger. The range for the top trim is 420km. And there will be 2 memory settings for drivers seat
the slow charging is a big issue for most buyers I think, if they had a great range then this would have not been an issue, it limits the ability of going on long trips. this whole thing about battery life is not as big of a deal, for most of the time people charge at home
I've read several articles and reviews on id4 about grabby brakes at stopping. Wonder if the bz4x will have the same issue with the regen braking system.
4:51 Not sure if charge point home charger installation is free of charge…I asked local Toyota dealerships about it, and they say it’s $699, which is also what it shows on the Toyota website…🤷🏻♀️
Good first effort by both of these manufacturers. The Toyota has a lot going for it, like brand reliability, but I dislike the black cladding, and not having a memory driver's seat is a deal-breaker for me. So I would probably go with the I.D.4, even with its quirky controls.
@Jean Toronto Raptors When there are two drivers, it is a real pain to adjust the seat and mirrors every time you switch drivers. Most cars at this price point have a memory driver's seat. Hope this isn't too hard for you to understand.

Toyota AWD 63k.... ID4 AWD top trims 58k.... I'd buy the ID4 or buy an Audi Q4 progressiv for 65k. And if you don't care about being in a SUV oriented EV I'd get the EV6 AWD for 62k. And anybody looking at the Model 3, don't bother, get a BMW i4 40 or M50.
You can get the VW ID4 Pro AWD for $46k in the US, No sunroof, Cloth Seats, and no power rear hatch, but with the $7500 rebate and possibly some state money, it would be under $40k, no BEV with 300hp in AWD comes close to that price.
@@thomasklein4265 yes, the ID4, EV6, Q4, Ioniq 5, XC40 Recharge, Bolt all get 5k dollar rebate from our Federal gov't but the Teslas don't. The Tesla's base price is too expensive. The Toyota will also get the rebate. So here in Canada, it's buy anything but a Tesla. LOL
FYI. Level 2 charge rates are so slow that having 6.6kW vs 9.6kW or any other Level 2 charge rate is totally irrelevant with regard to battery life. Only differences in the DC fast charge rates are relevant.
@@ClaudioBarroso Not sure what you mean by the "rate for Batteries". Battery ENERGY stored is rated in Wh or kWh. kW/h (kilowatts per hour) is power per hour which doesn't really make sense. But the point is taken that way too many people in the EV space WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER are citing the incorrect units for power and energy and creating unnecessary confusion. For example, saying an EV has an 80 kW battery is like saying a gas/petrol car has a 107 hp gas tank.
Toyota invested all it's money in Hybrids while VW invested everything into EVs post dieselgate and it shows. The Volkswagen is just a better EV overall. If you like Toyota, you could buy their Hybrids/prime. Toyota hides behind the slow charging by stating it is designed for longevity...EV buyers are people who will never own their car for 10 years xD, these are the people making solid money and will switch cars every gen.
Fantastic and through comparison as usual. To me the deal killer with the Toyota is the lack of memory seating position for it's driver's seat and lack of power adjustment for the front passenger. These are ok for vehicles in the 80's but it's 2022 and to omit these basic but convenient features is ridiculous. Just on this alone, I would take the ID 4.
The id4 doesn't have the same motor in front as in the rear... the front is a completely different type that can disengage so it just spins freely when not required to improve efficiency...
I’d like to bring an element of the real world into this discussion. People might be inclined to think they can walk into a Toyota dealership and buy a RAV 4 prime and expect to be driving it in short order. Fact is, 3-4 years of wait with a $2500.00 deposit up front. Today, another Canadian brought that expectation to 5 years wait. How will delivery compare with the BZ4X? I’m thinking we might realistically expect warp drive in vehicles by then.
I’d4 brakes were way to spongey for me and the backseat was to uncomfortable in my opinion plus the ultra laggy Display still a year after launch and I just don’t think VW really put there all into it so I decided on the Toyota. The biggest criticism of it are really the amount of piano black which I agree with and the slow rate of fast charge which I disagree with.

I love these comparison videos. It provides a lot of validation as well as great counter thoughts. But like I said before, the ID.4 is still the best value EV you can buy.
Does any of these offers cover for panoramic sunroof. The BZ4 looks like it has. How is the auto steering on freeway for these two cars? How is the charging network?
Seems like the Toyota is not really made for long trips. The VW is better, but significantly less than the EV6/Ioniq 5. I also don't like Toyota's gauge cluster. Sure, VW's does not look great, but not as offensive. Much prefer to save money & weight and not get a power seat. Heated and vent seats seem like a much more important feature to have, though cloth seats could be sufficient in mild climates.
Interesting how in North America the Toyota ’T’ is a more valuable brand in terms of build quality, durability when compared to VW. Here in Europe it’s the other way around. Toyota’s are respected of course but the ‘German build quality’ thing still counts for something, although the stats don’t back that up.
It's because some VWs in North America were assembled in Mexico and probably a bunch of workers had a few shots of Tequila, therefore fucked shit up. Now people have a bad taste.
Considering batteries degrade over years , is that worth paying premium everybody is charging for EVs? I am going to keep my gas car for next 5 years. I want to switch over but there is lots of price gouging going on at this point.
Good point. GM just dropped their BOLT to sub 30K. Tax credits are over. otherwise they wont sell. Cant wait until other companies start using LFP batteries. Keep waiting. No rush.
I don't get Toyota. No one pedal driving and slow charging. I understand that faster charging is harder on the battery, but most of he time we're doing L2 charging at home. When I'm traveling, I want to be charged and on my way in under a half hour. The bZ is basically an entry-level town car.
C'mon, go measure it yourself. Id4 AWD has more than 8" ground clearance. Stop using the conflicting VW media info. VW media's ground clearance is the fully loaded to capacity minimum clearance. And Toyota uses the maximum clearance with zero load.
At 3:15 you said VW will permit one-pedal driving in a future software update. I looked elsewhere for more information about that but struck out. Can you elaborate? Will the amount of regenerative braking be adjustable in software or does VW just mean that by taking ones foot off of the go pedal the car will slow to a complete stop (and not creep forward)?
Kind of review u need to watch a few times. Lots of content. Wait. No glove box, no rear wiper? Toyota it snows here ya know. Great job to my fav west coasters.
Seems to me that Toyota came in late to the party and underperformed compared to what's out there from charging, features and range standpoint. No question to me that the ID.4 wins this comparison
great video! I was looking hard at both vehicles. ultimately Toyota was too slow with production, so I reserved an ID4. Would have loved to stick with Toyota coming from a Prius C.
I think electric cars are great for the urban environment with daily driving distances of only a couple hundred km per day. Lots of charging stations available and easily charged at home. However for any long distance travelling EV's are not practical. Hydrogen fuel powered vehicles are the future for any small or large vehicles for long distance travel. You can easily top up in 5 minutes vs 30-40 minutes with a EV. In fact Ontario has just announce a new Hydrogen fuel production plant to be built in the Niagara region which could be running by 2024. Several more are planned in the province.
I can't find any reasons why I should buy TOYOTA BZ4X EV.. 1. slow charging speed 2. low horse power 3. low efficiency 4. lowest top speed in this category 5. heavy weight 6. even not RWD base 7. so design?
Excellent review of two fierce competitors -- I'm a previous VW owner, and value conscious, so I'll take an ID4. The styling of the BZ4X is just too bizarre for my taste.
Not a fan of the BZ4X name and those ugly black accents around the wheel wells. I'm also a stickler for symmetry...and the lines going vertically towards the screen...just kind of juts out. Can't unsee it.
Good review, but you should check on the type of clearance figures given by the manufacturers before you state one is better than another. As pointed out by an earlier comment, they are in reality very close. Secondly, acceleration stats are useful, but how does the car handle emergency lane changes, curves, bumps and pavement joint strips? How quiet is the car in regard to tire, road and wind noise? How long are the seat cushions in the front seats, especially important for taller drivers? Thanks.
By the sound of packages and other things both vehicles sound like a start up but VW offer a lots of features is a good start tho. Awesome video Andrea! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️🔌🔌

Toyota for me. Looks and quality. Plus "the bank of Toyota" for value 👍👍
I love these comparison videos. It provides a lot of validation as well as great counter thoughts. But like I said before, the ID.4 is still the best value EV you can buy.
It’s actually beh-zeta-quatro-equis here down south.
Next, I'd like to see a comparison between the VW ID.7 , & the Toyota Bz3
wonder how rear wheel drive EV perform in Canadian winter...
Wonder why they didn't name the front wheel drive model bZ2x instead of bZ4z?
Because there are other models coming. The '4' stands for the car size. There will be a bZ3X, a bZ2X and even a bZ5X. 25 new EV models coming... 😉
What vehicle are you guys sitting in during the A-roll shots?
As Always, fabulous review
I wonder if when solid state battery packs go in to production, whether Toyota will offer a battery swap?
That will never happen. The differences are too big.
2wd I would take the Toyota. AWD I would go with the cheaper VW.
Thumbs up for the "zed" 😁
Too bad the awd Toyota charges sluggish.
ar 10 ys 90% good
Does any of these offers cover for panoramic sunroof. The BZ4 looks like it has.
How is the auto steering on freeway for these two cars? How is the charging network?
The ID.4 sunroof has a retractable sunshade.
adaptive cruise control on toyota is excellent
Seems like the Toyota is not really made for long trips. The VW is better, but significantly less than the EV6/Ioniq 5. I also don't like Toyota's gauge cluster. Sure, VW's does not look great, but not as offensive.
Much prefer to save money & weight and not get a power seat. Heated and vent seats seem like a much more important feature to have, though cloth seats could be sufficient in mild climates.
long trips are made for hybrids
Interesting how in North America the Toyota ’T’ is a more valuable brand in terms of build quality, durability when compared to VW. Here in Europe it’s the other way around. Toyota’s are respected of course but the ‘German build quality’ thing still counts for something, although the stats don’t back that up.
It's because some VWs in North America were assembled in Mexico and probably a bunch of workers had a few shots of Tequila, therefore fucked shit up. Now people have a bad taste.
one of my deal breakers is the infotainment being too driver-centric. As a passenger, I should be doing the maps/music, not distracting the driver.
I Love both of you
I wish they upgraded the options on the Toyota front drive it has better charging, and likely would work for most!
Eurospec Version has the same Panasonic battery(according to info from 04-2022) for both FWD and AWD.
I am from a hot country I don't need that radiating heat but I need that glove box so is this only for cool climate countries???????????and y
No rush.
you can get bz for msrp, mostly because no federal tax break on them
Can you do one comparison with the ionic5?
I don't get Toyota. No one pedal driving and slow charging. I understand that faster charging is harder on the battery, but most of he time we're doing L2 charging at home. When I'm traveling, I want to be charged and on my way in under a half hour. The bZ is basically an entry-level town car.
So which one will come first for Ontario? I heard the RAV4 prime is a 2 year wait in Toronto! 🤣
Hey please compare these two versus the new model y all wheel drive standard range
That is easy. The Model Y has a harsher ride, charges faster, drives further and costs more than either the ID.4 or BZ4X.
I take Toyota bZ4x. i don't trust VW I.D. 4 quality and reliability? Remember VW diesel scandal??
I hear this for the first time also.
Kind of review u need to watch a few times. Lots of content. Wait. No glove box, no rear wiper? Toyota it snows here ya know. Great job to my fav west coasters.
best snow car bz4x
προκατειλλημενοι με το Τ της ΤΟΥΟΤΑ καλό αλλά θεωρώ το ID ποιο ολοκληρομενο
We all want T on your steering wheel…. Some we want VW on our steering wheel
Seems to me that Toyota came in late to the party and underperformed compared to what's out there from charging, features and range standpoint. No question to me that the ID.4 wins this comparison
id 4 can tow. game over
Seems to be some chinese car Platform?
I dislike the idea of NO spare tire. What if you get a flat tire on the road. ?
even my prius prime had no spare
great video! I was looking hard at both vehicles. ultimately Toyota was too slow with production, so I reserved an ID4. Would have loved to stick with Toyota coming from a Prius C.
🇺🇸 bz4x looks sporty! I like 8.1 clearance. Andrea is right...fwd with winter tires. 90% ar 10yrs. Still take ice on long trips.
Please stop spamming a wonderful channel.
The best is producing Hydrogen onsite. They have them in California and it's a lot safer than transporting it around.
I can't find any reasons why I should buy TOYOTA BZ4X EV..
1. slow charging speed
2. low horse power
3. low efficiency
4. lowest top speed in this category
5. heavy weight
6. even not RWD base
7. so design?
Perfect test!😃👍
Excellent review of two fierce competitors -- I'm a previous VW owner, and value conscious, so I'll take an ID4. The styling of the BZ4X is just too bizarre for my taste.
What is the waiting list for the BZ4x?
I called BMW for a i4 in Montreal and Québec. The waiting list is about 2 years!
Not a fan of the BZ4X name and those ugly black accents around the wheel wells. I'm also a stickler for symmetry...and the lines going vertically towards the screen...just kind of juts out. Can't unsee it.
Great reviews! But a cloth dash on the Toyota would just suck - dog hair, hello?!
Great I think I'll go buy one.....oh wait.
did you buy or still waiting 😂
@@rambotulip I meant there weren't any available to buy even if I wanted one.
im sure there are now, one of few evs that mist dealers have ...just gotta know if low range is for you
The Toyota is really a Chinese BYD - rebadged as a Toyota - but I prefer it to the VW
who wants to spend a hour charging the car
Thank you very much! This is very helpful to me.
No towing is a non starter for me.
Isn't the Toyota manufacturing outsourced to Chinese ie Toyota can't make this car?
Volkswagen does NOT use the same type and size ev motor for the front motor. Just compare the power ratings.
They also got the ground clearance wrong.
I just finished watching your 2023 Palisade sneak peak video I’m most excited about for in the new Palisade is heated 3rd row seating in the Calligraphy trim
Are you’s doing a sneak peak video on the Telluride it’s gotten so good updates including a different display and curve screens
We are, it will be out tomorrow morning, stay tuned! - Andrea
Thank you for your informations, i am living in germany, but i get a reservation for bz4x . in moment i drive a toyota too, landcruiser executive, but i want to know whats going on with the next generation ev………
How come they didn't mention the solar roof on the BZ4X?
I've noticed that these early reviews don't mention or show the solar panel. I wonder if the few models available for review just don't have the feature, yet?
BZ4X 1 hour to 80% on a rapid charger? 11 hours to 100% at home? These are 2017 specifications
Chevy BOLT is quicker than that and its still used the 55 kwh charger.
do you still have your subaru lol
Im torn I've always liked the ID 4, but I do NOT like Volkswagon. I would likely go with the Toyota just because.
reliability...and once you drive you will love it...id4 has complaints from owners
Where is the solar roof I was promised?
