"First ever ground-up electric car," don't you think that's something of an overstatement? Maybe the first for Toyota, but, ground up has been done. Many times. Affordable though, that's a giant step forward!
@6:38 - I'm 6'6" and find that many Japanese cars do not anticipate that somebody would be this tall (or taller) and are happy to reduce "unneeded" headroom in the name of efficiency. Sadly, this is a deal breaker for me because I don't want to drive around gangsta-style - plus, if you do, the side pillar blocks your peripheral view. Please Toyota - realize that your customers aren't all in the 5' to 6' range...
Yup, this is my same issue with Japanese car manufacturers like Toyota and Honda. At 6’4”, I pretty have to pass on most of all these vehicles because of comfort and visual driver clearance. Unless as you mentioned, having to sit gangsta style, which isn’t comfortable. Well, at least normal to short height people can enjoy this lovely car.
Great review and helped me to cross the Bz4X off my list - the quarter panel contrasting inserts are hideous and make you think it was in an accident with replaced panels waiting to be repainted. The interior - dash, wheel, screen, etc. doesn't to anything for me. I currently drive a Prius Prime Limited (as a "gateway" to an all EV) and many will think it's hideous as well but I like it's exterior way better than this. So far I'm leaning KIA EV6...
I see Toyota continued the ‘no bumper’ (extension) like on Sienna. Nice look but hatch is nailed if there’s any rear contact (misbacking or rear collision). Likely XPNSV fix for even light collisions.
The interior reminds me of 80s toyotas like the mr2 and celica the seat material style especially but the futuristic areas but then very old school looking vents and loads of buttons
I can't find any reasons why I should buy TOYOTA BZ4X EV.. 1. slow charging speed 2. low horse power 3. low efficiency 4. lowest top speed in this category 5. heavy weight 6. even not RWD base 7. so design?
Honestly, it seems like this vehicle was an after thought and slapped something together to make a full electric vehicle. Yes, that gauge cluster is too far which interferes with the steering for viewing. I think it’s actually designed for a yoke steering. It’s a good start and as long as it’s affordable in the 30ks, it adds to electrification of Toyota and Subaru. You mentioned funky a lot of times and that’s just what it is. However, you still haven’t driven this thing yet? What’s the holdup?
Great overview Tommy. I don't know why so many people are making fun of the name, with so many other vehicles named with letters and numbers that make no sense either.
A lot of hate on this one from people. lol. I don't hate it, but there are some design cues that are not fantastic. And I am not sure this would be idealistic for the average fast food burger consumer. Will know if it is even considerable when price comes out.
yes, both vehicles will have 8.3 inches of ground clearance, according to multiple sources including Motor Trend... This surprises me because the Toyota looks closer to the ground than does the Subaru Solterra.
This will be around 45k+ after all the extras and some dealer markups. With taxes you’re looking around 50. Not to mention that by the time this comes out, the 7500 tax credit from Toyota will be exhausted by then and will be down to the 3750 tax credit -assuming u have that much tax liability. But this is an ok first attempt from Toyota and despite their proven reliability as a brand, I wouldn’t roll a dice on this. And if I need a car right now, need to ask myself do I really need to spend that much to justify the high gas prices.. I’d rather get any of Toyota’s hybrids that are cheaper and proven reliable. Heck even some Lexus hybrids are cheaper than this. But those hybrids can go 40-50mpg and will last 200-300k miles easy.
@@moloono1 Toyota makes low volume showroom cars. They also make some of the highest selling cars. Toyota has made “turds” these are all true statements
Love Toyotas. But I HATE this Interior! Finger prints everywhere, that fabric on that dash is gonna filled with Pollen and Dust/lint. The speedometer screen seems way to far away from the driver, and extra small. Who the hell designed this?
I am a Toyota fan, but when I look at the materials here, the quality and feel is very modest. In addition, the doors close poorly (despite open windows) and with a clattering noise. It is also unbelievable that Toyota has not managed to place a storage tray for the charging cable in the front "trunk". The luggage compartment roller blind, which probably originates from a Camry from 1992, matches this. And the crowning glory of incompetent engineers is the speedometer behind the steering wheel, which can probably not be read by 80% of the world's population, because the steering wheel simply covers him!
They failed on that dash cluster, some of us are getting old and it’s going to be super fun, also having to constantly wipe the dust off that is going to be a blast!
That dash cluster really is horrible. No sun shade, super far away from the driver thus harder to read. The way it swoops in has cool lines but it's ugly because where it is and what it's doing. I'm a function over form kinda guy and that.... Is not that.
I wished they did a little better with the positioning of the steering sheel and MID. I have a feeling part of the steering wheel is going to block the lower portion of the MID. Other than that, it looks great!
Overall I like the design but I can’t stand that white section on the top of the headlights or daytime running lights because it looks like it was just stuck on at the last minute it feels like it doesn’t quite in a great while enough to the rest of the set up
The European specs looks promising, range up to 321 miles and charging speed up to 150kW. Hopefully the US one would be similar. When can we order or reserve one here in the US?
The gauge cluster looks too small for me… I’d want all the numbers and information on there to pop out more. Does it look small in person too or is it just the video?
I predict everyone will just buy a black one. It's such a perfect looking SUV, even better than the Venza, Mirai or Prius, but just ruined by that cladding. Or this will just become a business opportunity for car painters to repaint the cladding's color.
@@Undech01 I owned the Model Y for 18 months / 16K miles and sold it for a profit last fall. Hey Tommy I love that fact that the top is above the bottom - LOL 6:20 mark -> Seriously, great review, my favorite reviewer at TFLEV
The piano black finish is a NIGHTMARE! I keep a microfiber rag in that little storage area. I love the vehicle though! Yep, the Limited edition has radiant leg heaters. They are pretty awesome! No glove box, that is where the radiant heater is located.
Official WLTP range, acceleration, and prices are available on Toyota UK site. It looks competitive. The glove box appears to be replaced by a double storage compartment in the center box. The conventional glove box area appears to be equipped with a radiant heater.
I heard there’s a recall because the wheels fall off.
I’m honestly so excited for EVs to be hitting the market in force. I love Toyota so I’m shooting for this car.
Its a great review, what about the actual battery range in summer and winter? Range loss in winter? Has it been tested?
Every car, even the fuel driven cars lose range in winter. We can just see the difference with battery cars, since they show it. I lose the same amount of range in winter with my fuel driven car.
Today I learned: TFL has an EV channel. So many channels!
I foresee aftermarket painting of the fenders being a huge thing. Paint shops: get your Toyota paints ready!
"First ever ground-up electric car," don't you think that's something of an overstatement? Maybe the first for Toyota, but, ground up has been done. Many times. Affordable though, that's a giant step forward!
He said, “THEIR first ever ground-up electric car” meaning toyotas first.
@@reduxith I heard "the" not "their" maybe I'm too unfamiliar with a Colorado accent. But I did note already that that would be correct.
@@justaguy6100 if you turn on the CC subtitle, you will see, that was “their”
@@walkmanlee2617 Ok corrected in post ;-)
thank you, i still get a reservation in Germany for this car, white /black, hope i get it in summer…..
Thanks Tommy. For the limited headroom you showed us, which is important, was the seat in the lowest position? Thanks.
yes it was!
@@TFLclassics Thank you! That's crucial information for me because I need a decent amount of headroom.
oh the gloss black. Oh the humanity!
Well, at least normal to short height people can enjoy this lovely car.
most are not that tall so it makes sense
Same problem here. I'm 181cm tall (I live in Belgium, Europe) and I can't sit comfortable in any modern Toyota.
It's just Japanese arrogance 😁
Thanks for this! I've decided I'm not a big fan of the bz4x now
Dont like the inside height, or the display setup at all.
About the instrument cluster, it is clear to me that they need to do something weird because this is an EV.
The whole layout of the dash and center stack looks so ergonomic from your camera POV.
Looks like a storm trooper. Hah, just after I said this, Tommy said it.
I've always thought the more recent Toyota/Lexus design language was cribbed from Lucasfilm. This car is a continuance of that trend.
No kidding. That black insert is terrible looking!
Keep the Prius Prime 😎
I see Toyota continued the ‘no bumper’ (extension) like on Sienna. Nice look but hatch is nailed if there’s any rear contact (misbacking or rear collision). Likely XPNSV fix for even light collisions.
The interior reminds me of 80s toyotas like the mr2 and celica the seat material style especially but the futuristic areas but then very old school looking vents and loads of buttons
Good review as usual, Tommy. You are getting a workout this week in LA (saw the Corolla GR vid) . . . Nice! Keep up the good work!
I have not seen an update of BZ4X having recalles. Do the wheels really fall off?
This car is beautiful. Can’t wait to test drive one. Hope it drives as good as it looks.
I can't find any reasons why I should buy TOYOTA BZ4X EV..
1. slow charging speed
2. low horse power
3. low efficiency
4. lowest top speed in this category
5. heavy weight
6. even not RWD base
7. so design?
Finally Toyota came out with their first EV!!
Insert Rodney Dangerfield comment on the golf hat from caddy shack but changed to glossy black panels.
Fenders look AWESOME!!! 👀 👍
Visually 💯 💯 💯
Great overview Tommy. I don't know why so many people are making fun of the name, with so many other vehicles named with letters and numbers that make no sense either.
A lot of hate on this one from people. lol. I don't hate it, but there are some design cues that are not fantastic. And I am not sure this would be idealistic for the average fast food burger consumer. Will know if it is even considerable when price comes out.
The lights make BZ4X look like it has been crying and its mascara is running down its checks. Respect to Tommy for representing needs over wants.
That seems to be a Toyota trademark. They made the headlights on the 4Runner look like they're crying too.
Has the ground clearance been confirmed to be the same as the Solterra? I think it was like 8.4 inches, but couldn’t find that info anywhere
yes, both vehicles will have 8.3 inches of ground clearance, according to multiple sources including Motor Trend... This surprises me because the Toyota looks closer to the ground than does the Subaru Solterra.
Great detailed review! Thank you. I have been waiting for a review on this car.
Toyota has already put a few turds out they definitely have room for another one. Low volume showroom car is all this is gonna be.
@@michaelbassett5105 they don't make "turds"
@@michaelbassett5105 What a weird way to say that Toyota was the number 1 manufacturer in 2021, beating out VW Group in the world and GM in the U.S.
@@allentoyokawa9068 correct they make cars that equate to turds!?!
@@moloono1 Toyota makes low volume showroom cars. They also make some of the highest selling cars. Toyota has made “turds” these are all true statements
I don’t know why everyone hates on the looks I actually like it
Love Toyotas. But I HATE this Interior! Finger prints everywhere, that fabric on that dash is gonna filled with Pollen and Dust/lint. The speedometer screen seems way to far away from the driver, and extra small. Who the hell designed this?
It looks like they let a computer design it with no human input.
Agreed. And it feels "cheap".
Overall I like the design but I can’t stand that white section on the top of the headlights or daytime running lights because it looks like it was just stuck on at the last minute it feels like it doesn’t quite in a great while enough to the rest of the set up
Regular door handles are great!
The European specs looks promising, range up to 321 miles and charging speed up to 150kW. Hopefully the US one would be similar. When can we order or reserve one here in the US?
Advertised range will probably be less, the Euro test tends to give optimistic numbers.
Subaru was taking orders but very limited quantity with major dealers only getting 100 for the entire 2022 !!
if its at a good price I’m all in!!
"Finally, an affordable EV that’s practical, stylish, and backed by Toyota’s reliability!"
As long as the wheels don’t fall off!
The gauge cluster looks too small for me… I’d want all the numbers and information on there to pop out more. Does it look small in person too or is it just the video?
The gauge cluster way too small for me too 😳
I predict everyone will just buy a black one. It's such a perfect looking SUV, even better than the Venza, Mirai or Prius, but just ruined by that cladding.
Or this will just become a business opportunity for car painters to repaint the cladding's color.
Yeah, wraps for the cladding are going to be popular, if think.
Been waiting for more info about the BZ4X, as this will likely replace my Tesla Y. Thanks Tommy!
Curious, why planning to to switch from model y to bz4x?
@@Undech01 I owned the Model Y for 18 months / 16K miles and sold it for a profit last fall. My original idea was to just buy another Model Y new (we have many cars, I can wait the 9 months for delivery) but now that the Toyota is coming out, I'm watching the specs to see if it's a good EV to consider. This video is the first I'm hearing about it having a heat pump (like the Y), which is better for efficient heating.
Y vs BZ4X, I don't need the performance of the Y and would prefer the more efficiency-focused design of the BZ4X. We won't need it for road trips, it's just a cheap-to-drive daily for running errands or the occasional drive to work.
@@jimmy-buffett just get the newer 4680 structural battery pack model Y from texas, hell get any one of the hot EVs out rn. This shit looks trash and offers nothing unique.
Also model Y isn't better only in performance its more efficiency focused too
I want a Bz Camry. Once that happens I found my next car!
When will this car be available for purchase in the US?
I wanted to know what your height is, and when you are standing next to the vehicle, where is the seat relative to your body? (And is the chair most down or up or in the middle)
Can i trust the information considering the video is published in April 1st?
Its at least nice to see that EVs are starting to complete with average cars instead of just copying Tesla, not everyone wants what Tesla is selling and combining more established technologies with the simpler electric drivetrain should make for a very reliable vehicle. Prices still need to come down, low enough to compete even without the fickle tax credits, but this is at least a step in the right direction.
Puff piece. How's the range, charging speed?
Interior reminds me of the 2012 Prius I used to have. I'm a Toyota lifer; first car was a 1984 Supra. Glad to see quality manufacturers in the EV game now; you shouldn't have to put up with a garbage built car just to have an EV.
Are you implying Tesla in terms of garbage built?
@@jml9550 Exactly my thoughts lol.
Tesla Quality is crap. This Car looks good and is great in overall performance. It's performance is well balanced. Kia and Hyundai owners are talking crap about this car lol.
Sadly XLE FWD rumor is won't be available in Canada.
Toyota has been using a similar clothe material in some of its other vehicles, namingly, the Corolla. That fabric has not been easy to clean or keep clean, now the vehicle I'm referring to was purchased used, but I havent been able to pull all the dirt from the seats after a few yrs of ownership, id recommend getting leather to avoid this type of nuisance.
How much to replace the battery?
Is there an option for towing?
The Toyota bZ4X in China, has the option for a yoke with steer-by-wire. Making more sense the layout displacement of the instrument panel. Not a surprise in an update model, Toyota uses some type of adjustable instrument panel.
You finally got your Subaru to review. Hooray!
Hi Tommy! Thanks for the BZ4x vid-- I currently have a KIA and love the Highway Driving Assist (smart cruise + lane following assist). How does Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 compare with the KIA's? Thanks!
@@no_data_for_you love the bz4x design-- will gladly switch rides if toyota safety sense 3.0 has reliable lane centering + adaptive cruise!
@@R56Cooper I have a 2020 model Yaris hybrid and it has good adaptive cruise control and good line centering so I'm sure the bz4x has both. Line centering just has a slight problem with construction sites and orange lines but mostly for the transition after the transition it's better again.
@@kaku_96 that's great news! Thanks for the insight regarding toyota's driver assist system--
Piano black? Why? Gauge cluster could have been done in a slightly more traditional way, too. I dealt with similar ones, and they don't perform well when it's bright/sunny.
does the sunroof open?

Any update on the MSRP?
I have the Toyota Camry V40 2007 he comes from Canada to here in Germany. Maybe he is no Electric or Hybrid but I love him also...And he is no Diesel and that's also great!!!
In Costa Rica the entry price is $69.900 for the base model and in here that is very expensive and there are better options as well for less price
