For those with a new Sony with Google TV, if you plan to use any apps that will fill up the available 4.4 GB of storage (don't look at the specs, my A80k claims to have 16GB but came brand new with 4.4GB free and will delete nothing to increase it) take my advice and return the TV before the store exchange time limit. The described process DOES NOT WORK on 2022 (K) models and apparently on 2021 (J) models. Yes, it will accept the USB stick as expanded storage, but then it won't install most apps there, and even if it does, in the case of KODI, the data will all go to the TV storage and fill it up quickly. Sony support has been no help, they just repeat the same thing as though it worked, and it doesn't. Twice I've added my video library to KODI and watched as the device memory fills up to where I get low memory warnings, even though the KODI app is installed on the USB stick. If you want use KODI with this TV, buy an Nvidia Shield, which integrates nicely with the TV and runs KODI properly. Frankly, since Sony can't seem to see what is clearly obvious as a glitch in their system, I think they should buy us all an Nvidia shield so we can use apps and storage properly. Even if you just have a small video library and can fit it on the TV, if you add the KODI app shortcut to your quick access apps list, the TV will move it repeatedly to the bottom of the list, where no one can find it. The Shield doesn't have this problem, and it too runs Google TV, so it's not an issue with Google TV. The TV (A80K) is otherwise excellent, but apparently Sony thinks by repeating a fix that doesn't work, it will eventually work.

This seems to be working for me (2021 A80J 77) BUT I have to say the TV power-on process seems very slow after this and very often the TV boots from Google splash screen in the mornings. However, all my low memory warnings have gone and the storage menu shows 2GB in use on my stick.

    • @slottybadfast8826
      @slottybadfast8826 Год назад +1

@@markcampbell9584 Do you have KODI installed, using the stick? That's good to hear about the storage, not so good about the sluggishness. My A80k boots fine with the stick in and used for the KODI app itself, but it doesn't store the data on the stick. If it's a different app storing its data on the stick, it might help us to figure out whether the TV or the app is to blame.

To use a USB flash drive for storage (apps only), it must be formatted on the TV before use. It will then work exclusively on the TV for app storage. Please note that moving apps to an external USB storage device is limited, some apps may not be moved. Planned obsolescence, apparently. Also, following their process of moving to USB only gets you so far since only some apps support external storage, or they only support it for some aspects like data. After running it down to 0.2GB free, I was only able to recover 800MB by moving to USB, since most apps don’t seem to support it.

Hi tallgrass, thanks for your inquiry! Unfortunately, no. You can only transfer the downloaded apps to a USB storage device to increase the memory space available on your Google TV. But the good news is that most of changes you made on the settings of the TV will remain even when you turn it off and back on again. Hope this helps! -Sam

I bought a new sony Bravia KD-43X72k. yesterday. All I'm trying to do is add a USB HDD/stick to record freeview programs onto. On my 6 year old smart TV, My old sony it was so easy. put the stick in, format and your good to go.
This is a totally different story. I have tried following the sony guides online, but mostly they seem to refer to a different model of TV or just dont give you enough information. or the wrong information.
I have been into system settings/storage formatted the drive for the TV. I don't want or need to download any Apps I'll still be using the firestick I bought and not the onboard stuff which Ive mostly disabled. . It's a TV not a laptop. . Ill use it to watch programs not write letters. I dont want the HDD to do anything apart from to be able to set and record programs from the guide. Which I am unable to do.
I have 2 blank mem sticks and tried them both in the 2 different available slots. and I cant find anyway to either make the box recognise that these Pen drives are available to record on or that they are even present. If I press the middle + key on the remote from the guide "I get this program is currently unavailable" Which is what I'm tryin to set timer to do.
Pressing the red record button does nothing.
Another problem is that I dont seem to be able to connect to my PC with ll the movies stored onto it
I'm getting very frustrated trying to things that were easy on my old box but which aren't like this on my new on. It shouldn't have to be rocket science to set up a bloody TV. .
Can someone just give me a simple how to guides to do the things IM trying to do.
Im really disappointed with this TV. I'm on the point if arranging for it to be returned its so bad. Unless someone can help?

How about this for a tech tip, Sony: do not fleece your customers by saving $2 on storage on your $2000 - $3000 TVs.
4GB storage free on X90J, holy sh*t. Had more storage available on $300 Samsung/chinese brands 5 years ago.
Congratulations, Sony. You made $2 extra on a $2000 TV. And turned a happy future repeat customer to a pissed off one that will think twice before trusting you won't screw 'em on dumb sh*t like this again. Hope it was worth it.

The store I bought my TV from which died last night insists I caused the damage (in 2 months time, yet I still have a 15 year old Sony I’ve never caused damage to, nor have I lost a pair of sunglasses, lost or damaged a new iPhone every year, etc.) and wants to charge me almost half price, $1700, for a replacement TV I didn’t damage!!!

I tried everything as per the instructions with my Sony X85J and yes I was only able to move a couple of apps like Kodi to the usb drive. But the weird thing is, after doing this, whenever I try to turn the tv on from standby, instead of turning on, the led light stays on for a couple of seconds and then it goes off. The tv doesn't turn on. During this time, it doesnt matter we press the remote power button or the tv button near the led. Then after a few seconds, the power button works and the tv turns on like it was powered down, with the Google TV logo animation n all. Its like the USB is causing some sort of issue. Instead of turning on from standby, the tv actually shuts down power or something.
I tried 2 USB devices, a regular SanDisk 32GB USB 2.0 storage and a SanDisk Ultra Luxe 64GB USB 3.1 Gen 1 Storage. In both cases, the issue was there!!

Hi Raj, Thank you for the information. Some photo images or folders take time to display depending on the image dimension, file size, and number of files in a folder. Some photos and movies may be magnified, resulting in low picture quality. Depending on the size and aspect ratio, images may not be displayed in full screen. If the storage capacity of your TV is insufficient, you can move downloaded apps to an optional USB storage device to free up space. Refer to this link for more details: www.sony.com/electronics/support/televisions-projectors-lcd-tvs-android-/kd-43x80j/articles/00223233?model=KD-43X80J&category=televisions-projectors-lcd-tvs-android-.

This doesn’t work at all!!! On the XR-65A95K I can’t migrate a single app after formatting as device storage, and when I try to move all now, an instant message pops up saying “Could Not Migrate Data.” I bought FOUR USB 3.1 DRIVES: 1). SanDisk 16GB. 2). Kingston 32GB. 3). Samsung 64GB. 4). Gigastone 128GB. NOT A SINGLE ONE WORKS ON THIS DAMN QD-OLED TV!! After trying them on the TV with no success, I tried them on my iMac. Every single one works just fine, and fast!!
Oh, and by the way, after two months my TV died last night. Not only was the reddish-purple anti-reflective coating covered with big, blue blotches due to a manufacturing defect, last night at 10:30 I pressed the power button on my remote and now the Sony LED flashes 4 times, pauses, and does it again before it shuts down. During those 35 seconds, I have lots of vertical lines of RGB on an area of my screen and two larger red horizontal lines! It looks like someone threw a baseball at it within the pattern, yet I did nothing and now the store won’t replace it!! CEVA logistics did a horrible shipping job with the box on the truck turned on its side vertically, and only one of the two guys pushed it like that with the screen side facing the metal rods on the dolly. I screamed at him to have two people carry it properly, horizontally on the sides by the handles, but he refused and I ran up to him before he approached my door and then he rotated it and pushed it on pavement!! So it worked for two months and then died, and now I’m screwed.

After having issues and reading the comments here, it is clear that the migration feature DOES NOT WORK. It becomes humorous how repetitive the Sony support comments are; almost like a bot. Support thinks that you just follow the instructions.. but the result does not match the described result. Sony - it doesn't work!

Oh, and also, this crappy advice doesn't work anyway (on J and K TVs at least), you can install/move like 1% of apps to USB (of course, none of the games or bigger apps it would actually be useful for), even with the developer mode.
So not only did Sony fleece me to save $2 on storage, it also made me buy an USB drive I didn't need (and can't use with their TVs anyway) for extra $20, with this lame "advice".
LOL. Hilarious, Sony. Say hi to galaxy brains making these decisions for me, will you.
