Ashley is ambiguous in the book. For example, he tells her that he can't stand the idea of her sleeping with Rett and after that Scarlett announces to Rett that she wants to have a separate room...
Actually, no. He kisses her multiple times and says in the fields that he loves her so much he could easily forget Melanie. He was absolutely leading her on.
Anyone who has experienced unrequited love, followed by the realization that the object of affections was never truly worth it anyway, can relate to Scarlett here - in spite of her horrible actions throughout the film that should not be condoned, this is what makes her truly relatable.

@@kaylajames9334 I am sorry but Ashley was quite ambiguous on the point, talking about family obligations, what was expected of him and how good Melania was. Pretty much everybody was praising all along the novel/the movie how good Melania was and criticising Scarlet for speaking her mind, being too attractive and doing what she had to do to survive. At the beginning, Scarlet is a young woman, with very little experience of reading into what people say and compare and contrast with their actions. At that stage, she could not see that Ashley was trying to let her down gently. In her mind, instead of seeing the relationship as unrequited love, she imagined Ashley and her would have been together, had it not been for his family’s tradition of marrying cousins (Eek! :-/) , additionally Ashley came to represent the charmed Southern life of her childhood, in which the biggest worry was who to have lunch with at a party.
Rhett loved Scarlett from the start. Scarlet was in love with the idea of Ashley, a fantasy that didn’t exist. She always loved Rhett even Melanie told him Scarlett loves Rhett much more than she knows. It’s why Melanie never took the rumors seriously over Ashley and scarlet. Rhett took scarlet back later. One good thing about scarlett is she’s persistent.
She was still despondent about Melanie. In the book there’s even a passage where she vows that she would gladly never look at Ashley again if that were the price to pay for Melanie to get better and live.
In the movie, yes it was too late. But in the book, I think there was still hope for them for 2 reasons: (1) he doesn’t actually leave the house in the book, he goes upstairs to pack, which gives her time to try to talk him out of it, time she doesn’t have in the movie. And (2) in the book, she has two other children, who he loves like his own, and for their sake he might’ve changed his mind and stayed, especially considering the gossips in town would inevitably realize they’d split up, no matter what precautions they took, and given the time period, that would’ve ruined the children’s future prospects.
@@LukeLovesRose either way, there’s a reason the story ends where it does. Mitchell in fact wrote the last scene first. She always wanted it to end that way. I wish this movie had more closure at the end. Maybe let them settle down a bit and fast forward to a few months or even a year later to see Rhett and Scarlett back together. I refuse to watch the "2nd" movie made in the early 90s because it doesn't have the magic that Viviene and Clark captured.
The main theme of the movie is survival. It was groundbreaking to show a woman sweeping all men to become wealthy and powerful even if she was unscrupulous. It was just interwoven woth the Old South myths and thus has a negative color today. It could be set in another period of history and be equally effective.

It is frustrating to us as a viewer because we can see each character from a distanced perspective. Scarlett had not yet had the realization that she loved Rhett, it was impossible for her to realize it before this point. I think this is because Scarlett is not an introspective person, she has no emotional insight. She needed an event like Rhett leaving her to realize that she needed to get him back because when he was around there was never a reason for her to worry, she always knew she would see him again, she always knew they still had a connection, she knew she could turn to him and he would be there for her, there was never a need for panic or realization to strike her.
No, in the book she actually tells him off for being torn between her and Melanie all this time and never appreciating the gem he had in Melanie and never fully owning her as his wife. It's super super sad :'(. Both she and Ashley didn't realize how good they had it in Rhett and Melanie respectively and messed everything all up.
