This moment is so awfully heartbreaking because it's the first time in years that Scarlett is actually smitten with Rhett, after his powerful "seduction" of her the night before. She's giggly, singing love songs, like an infatuated girl. She even smiles at Rhett when he comes into her room; a rare, genuine, sweet smile. Then he immediately crushes it all. It's like neither of them can truly stand to see the other one happy for more than a few seconds.
Seeing Rhett with Bonnie, you see how much love and affection he is capable of. If only he and Scarlett could have stopped letting their bitterness sabotage their chances of happiness with each other and shown each other some tenderness, this would have been a different story entirely.
That was her chance to save her marriage when he asked if she would divorce him if Ashley were free "wouldn't you Scarlett, wouldn't you??" ... Rhett was always waiting for Scalett to love him and not Ashley :(
sadly it had to take Melanie dying for her to realize that Ashley was a girlhood infatuation. A love that she couldnt comprehend . She was practical she had to be. Where AW was more ertherial concepts a life that was gone, books honor passions that KS couldnt understand
And yet the scene opens with Scarlett being almost giddy at how things turned with her and Rhett. We won't go into it but he wasn't going to take no for an answer and in some ways, this proved to Scarlett that he was better than Ashley ever would be. She had everything. If only she had stopped using Ashley to provoke Rhett. She could have admitted then and there that despite their constant rows, she loved Rhett and theirs was a passion in all of its ugliness, pettiness and yet intensity. She had to admit that she only wanted Ashley because she couldn't have him. But even if she could, she'd be bored with him in less than a week.
This is probably the best acting ever! On both sides! It is amazing what these two accomplished! It is mesmerizing..... Vivian and Clark both are undeniably two if the best actors ever!!!!! ❤❤❤❤Bravo! Gone with the wind!!!!!
"Frankly, my dear, a give it a damn." One of my all time favourite movie lines. The one that I can also relate to: nobody is perfect, but when you give someone everything you got, love them and "serve" them unconditionally and they constantly throw it back to your face, there comes a point when your love simply dies. There is no coming back from that.
One of the most frustrating scenes in the movie is when Scarlett is calling out for Rhett after she fell down the stairs and miscarried their baby. And when he asked if she was calling for him, but was told “no”. If he had heard the truth , their whole relationship could have been saved. Heartbreaking.
He loved her passionately, but he was a terrible father. He abused and threatened her mother and made her miserable, he separated daughter from mother for his own spite and jealousy. When Bonnie says she misses her mother and wants to go home, he's stunned, because he's just that clueless about how to properly raise his own child.
Rhet was her one true love and Ashley was just a childhood dream with no chance of becoming reality. Melanie had to die for her to realize it, but by then it was too late.
When I watch this I see how blind Scarlett was holding on to the past and throwing happiness away she had everything but lost it all for something that would never make her happy but she realized it too late
@@monica.e EXACTLY!! they were two sides of the same coin. And yet the truth is that Scarlett wouldn't let herself ADMIT the truth. That if she had Ashley she'd be bored with him within a week and would BEG to taken again by Rhett.
This movie is great and awful because I spend a lot of time fuming that Scarlett won’t get her head out of her bum. And then when she finally does it is too late. I like to think that they reconciled after she reformed… but I’m not sure if she has it in her to reform.
@@reikun86 In the sequel Scarlet and Rhett get back together for a brief time then they separate again. Scarlet travels to Ireland to meet her father's side of the family it is there that she realizes that she is pregnant and has another daughter. Rhett follows her and after many ups and downs they stay as friends for the sake of the child.
@@isabelbarroso3381 It is important to note that the author left the end completely ambiguous stating in a letter that, “Whether or not Rhett came back to his wife, well, you have me out on a limb. You see, I do not know myself. I honestly never thought about what happened to the characters after the book ended.” So sequels are unreliable. I think it is for us to decide. Personally, I love a comeback story so in my head they reunite after so time and work.
The older I get, the more of a tool Rhett becomes in my book. He chased after Scarlett relentlessly even though a) she told him over and over she wasn't interested, b) she was in love with someone else and he knew it, c) she married multiple other people she had no respect for. He went in eyes wide open and still had the gall to be angry with her for being exactly the person he knew her to be . His delusion that he was entitled to change her for himself led him to coax and bully her for years. Then when he finally won, he walked away from her. People complain that Scarlett was blind this entire time to the Great Prize in front of her that was Rhett Butler but in all honesty, she saw him clearly in the beginning. He was a scoundrel. It just sucks that she thought she could play his game when he held basically all the cards.
Not to ever condone his violence, but Scarlett was cuckolding him with her mental affair with Ashley.. this after he gave her millions and gave her everything she could and ever would want. She would never be grateful and never would make him forget that he was second to Ashley.. or to who she thought Ashley was. No wonder he was violent.. he couldn't compare to Scarlett's idolization of that weak Ashley... even if Rhett was far more a maverick and far more fiery and rich than he'd ever be. In short, he was the perfect match for Scarlett and she for him, which if you listen to what he says, he'd never abandon her and actually never ever divorced her. I think he left her just to see if she'd chase after him. He essentially left her with everything, including the means to go back to Tara. Doesn't sound so unhinged to me.
Everything he came to hate about her was what he liked about her in the first place. He knew what she was really like and still hoped he could change her. He got what he deserved too.
If you think that you either don't understand her or you need to read the book, half the people who looked down on Scarlett even Rhett didn't know she fed most of them even Rhetts two maiden aunts and Ashley used her when he knew he would never marry her he led her on she was only seventeen, there's so much more to scarlett I love her
@@reikun86 Exactly.. "don't know whatchu got til it's gone".. But part of me wants to believe that Rhett wanted Scarlett to come after him, thus proving she really did love him. I think if she did that, that would have shown she grew as a woman, but if you caught it, what does she think of? Tara.. she wants to go home and try to be that little belle of the ball again; taking it away from her sister. Girl never learned, you can't go home again.

Vivien Leigh was born for the role of Scarlett. Not only did she play Scarlett, but she WAS Scarlett.
I quite agree. She embodied that role like no other woman could ❤
The look a well bedded woman gives is timeless and universal 😊

Rhett had many faults but he was a great father.
Rhett had a great love for his daughter Bonnie ❤️❤️❤️

When is movie started she was 16 and he was already in his thirties.
And the sad thing is that she didn't love Ashley really just the idea of Ashley that she created in head and she didn't see it until Melanie died.

He was but he did spoil her too much. A child does need boundaries, to feel safe and BE safe
When he finally said no, it ended very badly

@lauradowney7167 well Rhett was older and wiser. Scarlet was a fiddly dee kinf of girl. I have to re-watch this movie.
Rhett was everything but so was scarlett. They just needed the puzzle piece to fit in time.
They'll never ever ever be another Vivien Leigh or Scarlett O'Hara
Glad Rhett wanted a divorce from😂Scarlett. Scarlet selfish, narcissistic & was always emotionally cheating on Rhett, liking that ugly Ashley.

Rhett was too good for Scarlett. She was too arrogant and selfish. Got what she deserved.
