It is worth mentioning that Scarlett's wedding dress is supposed to have been her mother's. It would have been made sometime around 1840 and it reflects the fashions of that era. Also, the wartime wedding was so sudden, there was no time to alter the dress so it fairly bags on Scarlett who is much smaller than her mother.

That is correct!! But 1830s gigot or leg-o-mutton sleeves reached their widest point between 1830 and 1833. Around 1836 there is a complete shift in the silhouette of the day and by 1840 the large gigot or leg-o-mutton sleeves had disappeared.

Scarlett and Rhett honeymooned in New Orleans, not europe, but it's an easy mistake to make since they look a lot alike. When she is in bed in the scene where he is standing beside her, that is supposed to be on a Mississippi River boat. People often overnighted on them traveling between St. Louis and New Orleans. I love the video on the lovely dresses, it is so sad they can't or won't make anymore films like "Gone with the Wind." If you're interested in reading the book, you can do so online for free now. Hair brooches weren't only for mourning the dead. People used to make them to give to loved ones to wear to war or when separated from a loved one, . My family had a few around when I was small but I don't know what happened to them. I remember they were tiny braids of hair turned or coiled artfully in the brooch. We had one that had my great-grandmother's bright red hair. My mother moped all her life none of us kids got her hair.

Don't know if anyone noticed, but one of the very rare times you can see the framing of Scarlet's hoop skirts is when she's wearing the War Dress. The costumers were amazing in their detail: you can see the hoop frame thru her skirt because Scarlet isn't wearing the usual layers of flounced petticoats between dress and hoop. She's likely had to sacrifice what would have been yards and yards of fine cotton fabric for wound dressings for the soldiers.

My second dress is the white dress with the blue velvet bolero that leads to the need for the red dress. Scarlett is definitely a clothes horse. If you haven’t read the book you should. The dress was a strapless lite blue dotted Swiss, just like Cinderella's dress. The skirt was scalloped with a flounce of netting underneath. Full, blowup, hoop skirt too. Long white gloves and a white rabbit fur stole. It was her dream and mine. Unfortunately, she had a brain aneurism just 2 weeks before the prom and even though I didn't want to go to prom because she was dying, I got dressed up and went to the hospital. By the grace of God and a surgeon in Canada she did not die but she didn't remember me at all. She never got her memory back of me, but she knew who my husband was, the brain is a crazy thing. I love Gone with the Wind, and if you've never read the book, you need to. It goes much deeper into some of the women's personalities. The movie costumes are beautiful in the sense that I believe they were designed to create the atmosphere of the mythical "Old South" or the "Lost Cause" that was the main view of Southern History at the time. With this goal in mind, you can understand that some of these dresses are more authentic than others. Enjoy these for what they are, but if you want to see what women were actually wearing, look at some period photographs, patterns made from museum garments, and even fashion plates (although the latter were romanticized.)

    • @mrbutch308
      @mrbutch308 Год назад +2

The dress Miss Scarlett wears in the opening scenes -the ruffled white one - is very pretty, but not precisely accurate historically speaking. In 1861 women wore long sleeves during the daylight hours. The movie is a little more romanticized than the book, and in fact Tara was not supposed to look quite so stately, it was just a farm house really. I agree with you - the myth of the "old South" was played up more in the movie than in the book ... Margaret Mitchell was in fact more sympathetic to Black folks and left her entire estate to Morehouse College (a historically Black college).

    • @xXOpenYourHeart759Xx

I’ve slowly accepted that the creative choice for making Tara and Twelve Oaks so elevated was to help the audience understand what the southerners homes felt like to them. They felt they lived in big beautiful homes and took them for granted. That way it’s maybe more easily understood what the plantation owners felt the war took away from them. That way of living was romanticized by them as time went on too.

The major advantage Taylor had over Leigh was that Taylor could do a pretty good "Southern" accent whereas Leigh could not. Otherwise - Leigh was at the peak of her beauty and did a great performance. I do think Taylor could have matched her in the acting department, especially in that role. Also, I always thought Taylor - as a child - could have played Scarlet and Rhetts daughter - "Bonnie Blue Butler". I always thought Taylor could have been great in that small role. I think that look would sell to a lot of brides of today lookin' to do the poufy princess thing, although I'd do a lower and less restrictive neckline, possibly scrapping the collar. Really the dress needs no alteration for that purpose, but high collars can do a disservice to the looks of anyone without an unusually long swan neck and scrapping them does wonders to make these dresses work for real bodies to breath and exist in. It's already too scandalous for Scarlett as a day dress at the time, however, so maybe there's humour in my reaction.

I just noticed that Scarlett’s war time dress (with the print pattern) is similar to the slaves’ dresses- I wonder if she had to sell her fine dresses to afford food and then had to borrow from Prissy?

I enjoyed this video, but just FYI Rhett & Scarlett honeymooned in New Orleans - not Europe.

I think her green dressing gown was the best. Some of the clothes look so heavy.

The velvet curtain one? That is true they do look very heavy especially compared to the 1910s Titanic fashion

@@CulturedElegance That 1 really did look heavy. Everyone likes the velvet curtain one. I know it's an iconic Hollywood costume but to me it still looks like curtains. The designer probably did that on purpose. In all reality Vivian Leigh would look good in anything

I loved the the dress she wears to the Barbecue and Ball at the Wilkes. The “Green Sprig Muslin” - I guess I must have read that in the actual GWTW book🤷🏼‍♀️
The beautiful red dress she wears to Ashley and Melanie’s to make her stand out as “the scarlet woman”, is definitely #2.

Gone With The Wind is my favorite movie. The strength and determination to survive everything she has to deal with is remarkable. My favorite dress is the ruby evening gown. Very impressive. Thank you for making the video. I appreciate you and love this.

I've always wondered why Scarlett is wearing hoops while working in the makeshift hospital when the Siege of Atlanta is starting. They are incredibly impractical in such a crowded space, and wouldn't it make sense for Dr. Meade to have forbid wearing them? (I mean, it's war, not a garden party!)

Because those were her clothes?🤷‍♀️ But I don’t believe she had hoops in the hospital.

Terrific video ! This is one of my favorite movies of all times, and I first saw it as a child, decades ago. She was so beautiful. My favorite gown was the green velvet one, made of her mother's drapes. There were so many memorable moments in that film...one of my favorites was her first glimpse of Rhett Butler, looking up at her from the bottom of the staircase....He was so handsome and had such a devilish smile...what a charmer !

I love all of the gorgeous dresses & lingerie she wore & it’s difficult to choose one… but I adore the red evening gown she wore to Ashley’s birthday party! Did you do the costume videos for Game Of Thrones, which were beautifully done?

"Gone with the Wind", "Wizard of Oz" and "The Women" were all being made at the same time at the same studio with dozens of people behind the cameras working all three at the same time. The dog "Toto" from Wizard of Oz also made an appearance in The Women. He was merely carried to an adjoining set. The costume department must have been crazy busy from 1938-1939. Amazing they still put in such finesse and detail in Scarlets gowns.
