I can never get enough of watching people react to SRV "Texas Flood" - especially for the moment when he plays the guitar behind his back. It never disappoints. I was fortunate enough to see SRV live a few times before he passed and let me tell you. You were either jamming out and dancing to him, or you were standing still, awestruck and paralyzed by the genius that you were witnessing. RIP SRV!
It's almost as much fun as watching him live in bars 3 times in Dallas in 82. I don't think we even paid a cover. Maybe $5. We were at a table 30 ft. from him. Good times!
You talked about his fingers having calluses lol and interesting enough, his calluses used to come off and Stevie would actually super glue them back on to finish the show. Also, Stevie gave that particular guitar a couple of names. He called it “Number One” (it was his favorite) and he also called it his “First Wife”. He said it didn’t scream at him, but instead screamed for him. 😂❤️😂❤️
He also used a very heavy string gauge, making it even more punishing on his fingers. I once read Jon Mayer saying SRV was so hard to emulate not because he didn’t have the skill but because his fingers couldn’t take it.
The absolute GOAT on the guitar. He played with the heaviest strings, adjusted as high as they could go, to bend the strings into submission. There will never be another like him.
This Cat has Swagger like no one else ever will. That guitar is simply and beautifully an extension of his body. ❤️🔥😎 May I recommend LITTLE WINGS next, please!?
I never could have guessed that one of the greatest blues performances of all time would happen in Canada! And yes his fingers. At this time he was still playing heaviness of a string somebody would put on an acoustic guitar! Welcome to a world where the music of the GOAT exists and is available to enjoy!!!
When I saw him in an itty bitty club in Ohio.... He literally CHANGED my entire perception of what a human being could do on guitar! And by this time, I'd either seen or worked back stage for BB King, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, etc. He could make them ALL look like they were standing still! I'm sure I'll take flak at some point for saying that.... BUT, if you saw him live, in PERSON, closer than this venue, you would understand how I can make that statement with total conviction! Simply, insanely GREAT all of you are enjoying him soooooo much!
Excellent choice bro. SRV used to crazy glue his WORKHORSED fingertips and he also used HUGE guage strings for tone but bending them takes alot of stank. I never tire of this INTENSE LEGENDARY performance. Good to see SRV living on thru new fans. SEND THE WORD. SPREAD THE JOY.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Life Without You (Live at Capitol Theatre) ...behind the back, backwards in front of him, one handed, over head, teeth...its absolutely incredible!
If I didn't know what you were talking about, I'd swear you were describing a "conniption fit"😂 and I mean this in the very bestest funny way possible✌
@Dougm that "life without you" performance is definitely a Stevie tour de force and it's all amazing and I've tried to hold a Strat over my head by the neck and make any noise at all and it was impossible for me but Stevie does it with style! Amazing! But "Texas flood" at the El Mocombo is a scorching, legendary performance
I still believe this is the best live guitar performance ever recorded. I saw SRV one time 3 months before he died and it was an amazing experience. I'm so glad I went because there wouldn't have been another opportunity. The music world lost a genius that day in Aug 1990.
In the 90s I had " Live at the Elmocombo" on VHS and would play it for people to see the look of shock and awe on their faces! Especially at the end when he plays "third stone from the sun" and does things to his beloved "first wife"(a Fender Stratocaster with a 1962 neck,a 1963 body and 1959 pickups) that are illegal in 19 states! After watching this one time I knew I was watching one of, if not the greatest guitar player of all times and I've come to realize SRV is incomparable and is the top of the heap, the pinnacle. There are some that came close but Stevies dedication to his craft was second to none and it really shows in his live performances.
Stevie Ray did this shit when he was 10 year's old on his bike. Ridin' all over Dallas Texas. ❤ You never seen Stevie Ray without a guitar in his hand's. His finger's on his left hand had quarter inch ti a inch holes in his finger's. He would skin graft his own finger's usein' bakin' powder and Super glue and glue em back on. Take a file and file down the rough edges so they wouldn't get caught on the string's and keep on playin'. ❤He payed his dues for sure. ❤ He's my brother I'm his Little Sister Kiya Lynn Vaughan. Ps. Thank you for the kind word's you said bout my brother.
El Mocambo is a club in Toronto Canada. Stevie did this in 1983. According to his bassist Tommy Shannon's book this is his hottest performance ever taped. It also happened an hour after medical personnel roused Stevie from a cocaine induced coma with IV fluids and vitamins. Hence all the extra notes on this show, and the extra sweat.
While Jimmy was a genius, Stevie was a master. I would absolutely put him square in the middle of the GOAT discussion. Also, my older brother was at that final concert at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin. He still has the ticket stub.
Glad to see this passed on to new viewers. He used to sleep in pool Halls at time and he cldnt read sheet music. The band kept up with what he played. There are many great guitarist but the way he feels his music and puts that feeling into listeners is second to none.
Always nice to see todays younger people discover yesterdays music and musicians. The last 90 years is loaded with great music just waiting for you to discover it.
Appreciate your honest and heartfelt reaction. Now, check out Stevie Ray Vaughn Soundcheck (the one where he's wearing a leopard skin coat) This soundcheck is better than most shows.
I love you, Relentless Lex, I am a senior and grew up with Stevie. Broke my heart when he died. So cool that you enjoyed this like you did. There is so much more to be savored. Thank you for your contribution.
Please check out SRV doing "Life Without You" live in 1985. Stevie and Jimi (Hendrix) were the greatest guitarists ever, imo. R.I.P. Jimi and Stevie who passed in 1970 and 1990 respectively.
@@williamcabell142 You mean Stevie? That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I believe that Jimi and Stevie were on the same level of greatness. Unfortunately I never saw Stevie live, but I saw Jimi live when I was just 14 and have been listening to his music all my life. Stevie was incredible too.
I heard he picked up the guitar at age 7 and obviously rarely put it down after that. Truly a generational talent. Yeah, he also had a world class stank face.
Rene Martine, his guitar tech, often pulled bits of melted pick out of strings and the guitars. He also donated his skin to superglue and baking soda skingrafts. Read that in a magazine article years ago. SRV was one of a kind GOAT. Everyone else is a far second. Go watch Little Wing at El Mocambo. Jimi Hendrix cover...but does Jimi better than Jimi, IMO.
It's so funny to watch Stevie bridge the gap between all genres and ages. It happens every time. People just stop and go WTF did I just see? He was the GOAT!!
Alot of people are saying that SRV is the greatest guitar player ever and it makes me so happy to know that he's still touching people 33 years after his death. I've been saying it since the 80s and I'll keep saying it, Stevie is the guitar master, the G.O.A.T. SRV and the Fender Stratocaster, Since 1954
SRV used .13 gauge strings which most guitar players could not even move enough to play like this. The man was a living legend and could sing real good too. Supernatural guitar skills that are unmatched to this day. Taken from this earth way too soon.
I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley Wisconsin August 26th 1990. The next morning was one of the saddest days of my life. The lineup was Eric Clapton, SRV, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. RIP SRV!
What was that iconic Eric Clapton (an iconic guitarist himself) quote … He said something to the effect “Stevie Ray Vaughan made thousands of kids want to start playing the guitar. And for those of us who ever shared a stage with him, he made us want to quit.” 😂
He wrote this song about him being out on the road and a hurricane 🌀 was hitting southern Texas where him and his woman lived and he was trying to call home to check on her but can't get through , cause all the phone lines are down

Greatest guitar exhibitionist EVER!
That was his favorite guitar (Lenny), a gift from his wife Lenora. I do believe it is on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

he would glue the callouses back on his fingers & keep playing!
Stevia was from another planet
Outstanding guitar player
SRV would play through his calluses to the point where his fingers would bleed all over his guitar. Dude was a legend.
