He was larger than life and he was LOUD...but it all 'made sense'. I've played guitar all my life and I'm a year older then SRV...but after seeing him I kinda gave it all up...he was THE master.
I had the great privilege of meeting and speaking with SRV on several occasions, seeing him in concert numerous times, and when he played, it was a vibe that struck you, the energy and passion that he brought to the stage and filtered through his guitar that hit you, like a 2X4 right between your eyes. His music, especially live, changed your life. That is the greatest compliment that I can give. I recall attending the Chicago Blues Fest in 1984 or 85, while completing my doctorate degree, and it was a comfortable leisurely afternoon and evening listening to many artists and excellent performances with a good crowd, but because of the large capacity of the fairgrounds there was plenty of room to stretch-out on a towel on the great lawn, that is until Stevie showed up with his band Double Trouble around 1:00 AM and started playing, then seemingly within 15 minutes, several hundred thousand additional fans descended on the grounds and we we all packed-in like sardines, standing shoulder to shoulder witnessing greatness, a force of nature and enjoying every second of it. RIP brother, hope you are tearing it up when and if I get there.
That look on Stevie’s face is called “Stank Face.” That’s because Stevie is completely immersed in the music. The Lord gave us guitar savant, Stevie Ray Vaughn to witness his greatness and then called him back into his arms.
That he did...Stevie had given his all. I heard a recording of his last concert in Wisconsin, just before he crashed into the Wisconsin mountains - I have never heard a human play guitar like that before...it was incredible, and I think his greatest performance ever.
"Live At the El Mocambo" (the entire event) captured one of those mystical moments in human artistic achievement. Every performance was a lightning bolt of greatness.
SRV at The El Mocambo is the best set of live blues playing I've seen, and I've seen a lot. It's freaking incendiary.

IMHO Stevie Ray Vaughan’s performance at El Mocambo was his finest live performance ever recorded. He was just so spot on with his riffs. He was on fire!!!!
I'll respectfully disagree. If you've never heard 'Peace in the Valley' or any recordings of his final two concerts at Alpine Valley before his crash...he reached the heavens a few hours before he actually did. Even Clapton said after his set "How the hell am I supposed to follow THAT?" Check out Sweet Home Chicago, the last song he played with everyone. He so outclassed everyone and less than two hours later...he was gone
100% agree. The El Mocambo video and the Ustin City Limits performance literally stayed in my VCR for just about 10 years. If I was home it was playing. Particularly El Mocambo. If I wasnt home I could hear every lick in my head all day. Theres just something about that is visceral, raw, and a million other things. Lenny on that recording.. holy shit. @@MrDevildog0321 It's true that Albert King was a BIG influence on SRV, but he did play a lot of Hendrix and "covered" his music better than anyone. But music, like science, 'develops' from the accomplishments of others. Like SRV once said when asked if he thought he was the best ever..."I learned from the greats and just try to be myself."
I agree with most here. There is no "greatest artist" ever. Each artist puts his soul on canvas. Each musician flows his soul through his instrument. Jimi is and was great. I love every song he created. But SRV had a soul that was without equal. Before he got sober... after... it doesn't matter, his music was magical.

Arguably the greatest to ever pick up a guitar, and I will fight anyone over that. His voice has been described as "honey poured over gravel". He also plays better behind his back than 98% of guitarists play in front. Check out him doing "Little wing" at the same concert or "Voodoo child" live. It'll change your life
At 61 years old but I’ve seen so many classic bands of all time live, Queen, Prince, Stones, Boston, Zep, and I will tell you, I would trade all those experiences just to have seen SRV PERIOD!
This entire show is a masterpiece. He ascended on that night to where his soul lives. There are 2 more songs from this show that are BEAUTIFUL guitar instrumentals. One of them is my absolute favorite guitar performance of all time, "Lenny" (Live at El Mocambo). The other one to watch is a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" (also El Mocambo), and in my opinion one of the best covers of all time.
@Patrick Glynn I bought this DVD the moment I heard it was being released. I literally watched it every day for the longest time. And I invited everyone I could think of to come witness it. It’s truly a masterpiece.
Brother I'm guitar picker down here in Austin and I've been playing for 45 years. I'm pretty good but it takes devotion to play like Stevie. Practice, practice, practice!

Hey Brother, just found your reaction... I can Feel you Feeling the music Stevie is putting down..!!! Have you ever been lost in a musical experience that is so Beautiful and the next thing you know you feel tears on your cheeks..?! Stevie is one of the few performers that have done that to me..!!
Wow! Just came back for a second look and thought I might contribute a quote from Stevie from an interview he did with guitar world. "I think I've got something special to say with my music. But I have to keep these things in perspective because they're gifts. It's all a gift and I have to keep giving back or it goes away. If I start believing that it's all my doing, it's gonna be my undoing. And I'm committing myself to doing the most I can with the gifts I have so they do as many people as much good as possible" And it is still lifting up spirits and doing as much good as possible and growing all the time.
I lived in Austin during his heyday and saw him live near A dozen times, A couple of times his brother Jimmy and his band were there too. I remember one outdoor concert it started raining pretty hard. The band had to leave the stage, but nearly the entire audience waited it out, standing in the rain, for Stevie Ray and Double Trouble to be able to retake the stage, about an hour later. It was worth it.
I Love the guitar and hearing it play Stevie Ray Vaughan he was truly amazing gifted guartist and he also played by ear and I named my son after him I have twins a boy and a girl but my son is named Stephen Ray I just spelled different the world truly lost amazing artist now I like many others guartist but I always say Stevie Ray is the greatest blues guartist . I Love your reactions
Good reaction. You appreciate Vaughn for who he was and he was great. At some levels it is hard to say who is the best ever but Stevie certainly merits being included in the discussion.
Finally a reaction that is as raw as Stevies playing. You will get the same intensity in every live video because this man leaves everything on stage. Stevie started playing at the age of 7. He was inspired by 1st and foremost his big brother Jimmy Vaughn a legend in his own right, other legendary artists include B.B King, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King and many other legends that paved the way for other artists to put their spin on the blues. The world mourned the loss of the worlds greatest guitarist. They say he played "like a man on fire". Stevie Ray Vaughn untimely death shocked the world but will always stay in our hearts forever.
There will never be any convincing me thar a better guitarist has ever walked this planet. This is simply spectacular and I've been a fan for 35 years.
Brian Johnson SRV is the Greatest of all time in Blues and Rock. Paco De Lucia is the greatest in Flamenco ( fastest lightening fingers) in history!! Yes two untouchables.
The first time I ever saw the video of him performing Lenny at the El Macombo, and realized he wrote it for his wife Lenora, for buying him a guitar, I cried. I am a grown ass man, and I cried because I knew I could never, ever, put that much emotion and love into anything I could ever accomplish. A more wonderful man, there never lived.
"Stevie was an endless open channel that music just poured out of effortlessly. He made people who'd never picked up a guitar in their life want to start playing, and he made those of us who'd played all their life who'd jammed with him on-stage before want to quit.".................Eric Clapton.
When the Devil met Stevie at the Crossroads, he had nothing to trade for a soul that huge. He ended up getting lessons from Stevie, but when he swung it around behind his back, the Devil just sat down and cried. Stevie Ray Vaughan didn't PLAY the guitar; he WAS the guitar.
Yes, I 100% agree. No one before or since can captivate and command my attention and quite literally transend my being the way Stevie Ray Vaughan can, 30 years gone now...thank God for video!
Not only was he a master on the guitar but masterful on the vocals to a point that they blend almost seamlessly with each other! RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan. His guitar playing has so much passion! I also love his version of Voodoo Child... He brought blues back to the forefront and made it popular to a new generation of listeners!!!
I loved your expression, Michael, when he started playing behind his back. It took me quite a while to recognize that his voice is excellent. Because I was mesmerized by his guitar playing.
StevieRayVaughan must be watched on live video. Seeing and hearing him play live gives you the true measure of his greatness. The man is not just playing a song to entertain you, he is inviting to into his soul. If you accept the invitation, you will leave the experience a changed person. maybe with just a new appreciation of the blues, but maybe, just maybe, a self awareness of some part of your inner self you were not aware of.
It gives me great pleasure to see reactions to Stevie Ray Vaughan...and yours has been the best among them. I was fortunate to see him live twice...July 4, 1986 at the Farm Aid II Concert near Austin, Tx...and then thankfully (and sadly), his final concert on August 26, 1990 at the Alpine Valley Music Theater near East Troy, Wisconsin. In my mind...and heart...he will always be the best guitarist I have ever had the honor to see and hear...
Awesome reaction and welcome to the SRV club. A few things. SRV played with .13 gauge strings (most do around .09 guage). You need to watch the SRV Hall of Fame induction. Also, how BB King & Eric Clapton describe SRV. Watch Voodoo Chile live at Macombo, only SRV can do Hendricks better than Hendricks.
Stevie's got a voice like honey poured over gravel. He had speed AND unparalleled touch and feel. The guy is an absolute abnormality. You can see him channeling something. Literally witness him channeling some outside power while he plays. Watching him perform is a religious experience.
Ah yes, the stank face! It will be glued on your face now. SRV gets into your soul and will live there forever. The world need a little love, peace and Stevie Ray right about ...now! Love this channel man. Can't get enough!
The licks he played between the vocal lines were greater solos than most guitarist can achieve in their whole musical careers.
I cried so hard the day he died. There might never have been such a tragic loss to the music world in a long, long time.

Watching folks react to SRV for the first time is my new favorite hobby. Love the enthusiasm.
That was stunning
Childhood grooves, thanks again for your attention to detail.
And I'm committing myself to doing the most I can with the gifts I have so they do as many people as much good as possible"
And it is still lifting up spirits and doing as much good as possible and growing all the time.
One of the best reaction videos I have seen for Texas Flood!
Thank you!
There will only be one SRV. Thanks for recognizing Brother Drama !
Thanks for responding to my comment
Good reaction. You appreciate Vaughn for who he was and he was great. At some levels it is hard to say who is the best ever but Stevie certainly merits being included in the discussion.
When you discover StevieRay its like you can start to see things
Every single time I give my sons my stank face.. they pop right back with " oh Lord, momma's SRV face "! 🙄😂😂
LMAO!!
So Awesome
This is simply spectacular
and I've been a fan for 35 years.
Brian Johnson SRV is the Greatest of all time in Blues and Rock.
Paco De Lucia is the greatest in Flamenco ( fastest lightening fingers) in history!! Yes two untouchables.
I sadly only discovered him after his death. He basically brings tears to my eye with every chord.
“WHAT THE HELL!” Loved it, that’s all you can say when you see that the first time. 😂😂😂👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
There is no better show to pick for your SRV reaction than Live at the El Mocambo. That whole show is legendary all the way through.
It is VERY easy to get caught up in how good he was on guitar, and completely overlook how damned powerful a vocalist he was....
Truth
If I was a dude, he'd be my fashion icon!
That whole show is amazing!
Plays it better behind his back better than ANYONE who plays the guitar in front! The greatest ever!
While singing too!
Well, this is officially my favorite reaction video. Brings me joy.
Yes he did Carol!
I loved your expression, Michael, when he started playing behind his back. It took me quite a while to recognize that his voice is excellent. Because I was mesmerized by his guitar playing.
I’m curious is that you in the avatar?
StevieRayVaughan must be watched on live video. Seeing and hearing him play live gives you the true measure of his greatness. The man is not just playing a song to entertain you, he is inviting to into his soul. If you accept the invitation, you will leave the experience a changed person. maybe with just a new appreciation of the blues, but maybe, just maybe, a self awareness of some part of your inner self you were not aware of.
I find I have to agree, SRV was indeed the real deal. God rest that man's soul.
Watched SRV full show at The Wax Museum from 83. Insane from start to end. Stevie broke a string during Texas Flood and fought through.
One day God said let there be guitar. Stevie Ray Vaughn stepped up and said thank you Lord.
Love your reaction. We have all been touched by the magic of SRV. Love him and miss him! A true guitar legend....
SRV IS GOAT!!!
Best live guitar performance i've ever seen also! SRV had an awesome blues voice also!
