I have heard a few covers of this song, but Voiceplay's is my favorite. It even beat out Peter Paul and Mary's version (Gilgarra Mountain).Thanx for watching the outro, I know it helps the RUclips algorithms. I stuck around to the end of yours, too!
    Take care!!

The original goes back to the 1600s in Ireland. The first time I heard this my great uncle George Houlihan was trying to get my dad to pour him another whiskey (Whack for my daddio) 60 yrs ago when I was 12. In the last 70 or 80 yrs, Peter Paul and Mary, Dubliners, Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem, Thin Lizzie, Metallica have all done it and I'm certain there are more.

We may be seeing more of J. None. Along with his promotion in the Navy, he's been moved from Seattle, Washington, and is now stationed in Washington DC just a short flight to Orlando FL. For their Hellfire video, he flew into Orlando in the morning to shoot the video and flew back to DC that evening.

Thanks for your reaction! I really enjoy hearing Omar as their featured guest also and was thrilled to hear that Omar will be their featured guest when they go to Atlantic City New Jersey this month to perform with the band, Chicago.

That was very good. VP has really come a long way in the last few years. 😊

I have heard various Irish groups sing this, but I am growing to really like this version as I get used to the differences. I love Voiceplay in any case.

Voiceplay will be singing with Chicago in NJ this month and have invited Omar to join the group. Always like your reaction. Thanks

🥃 in a jar - very old song and done a gazillion times in all kinds of genres... about time it was done a capella - which is at the best of times a difficult thing to do! Thanks for the reaction.

Original is older than the recording industry (Irish folk song dating back a few centuries) 😉

It took me a while to be able to accept the new melody for this one, but once I did, I love it. That'll happen with me every now and then but I've figured out how to get my brain to come around, lol. It's like I couldn't really hear it before that. The harmonies are so moving and beautiful and we get a ton of textures in Eli's voice. I've definitely grown to love it.
On a side note, J None dropped a new solo song recently! I'm also hoping he comes back full time when he can.❤

Songs weren't recorded when this was an original, but quite a few covers of it exist. VoicePlay was my introduction to the song and I'm slowly working my way through it's history. I like the Thin Lizzy cover, still need to watch Metallica's rendition. Hopefully I'll get to it this weekend. Thanks for the reaction!

Hearing the original will require a time machine - it dates back to the 1650's. Tale of a well known highwayman -- there's some argument about whether this is the same, original song, but I've never seen any convincing info otherwise. Songs and stories both morph and change over time...

Always like to see you react to VoicePlay...your eyes, your facial muscles, you start to 'move' when the tempo changes....My understanding is this song is from the 1650's, story of a Highwayman....Irish folk song, true in its origin...lots of people have covered it from The Dubliners, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Roger Whittaker, Thin Lizzie, Metallica....>^^

Kind of hard to hear the original of this because it was written around 1680. This version is great though.

    J. None is serving in the USN. I figure he’ll be back after that.

Sadly there wasn't recording ability in 1650 when this song was written.

They've taken an outlaw ballad and turned it into a pop song. This is the first time that I have been unable to listen to one of their songs more than twice (and I cringed each time).

100% agree with ya. They always sound great, but the song itself didn't grab me this time. Not faulting them, just wasn't my style, I guess.

I like bass but they rely on it too much, still a good song
