This is a traditional Irish folksong about a highway man robbing a military officer and being betrayed by the woman he loves, ending up in jail. The "musha" word is the actually the Irish word "muise" and is an exclamation of "well" or "indeed," and is followed by the Irish equivalent of scat singing - it's all nonsense verbiage. "Whack for my daddy-o" would be said while holding up the jar of whiskey, essentially saying "Here's a shot for me." And Geoff sings a gorgeous F1 in chest voice.

So . . . You're going over the Kerry mountain, and happen-upon Captain Farrell.
Farrell is a soldier/Officer. Likely, Farrell and "you" have crossed paths, or he's hunted you before. Either way, you clearly know who you're robbing.
"You" are a highwayman, a bandit.
Captain Farrell is counting-out his money.
You draw your pistol, then your rapier, and tell him you're there to cut-a-bish.
It jumps to where 'you' got home to Jenny, "your" wife/lover/girlfriend 'Jenny'/''Molly'. (Some versions use 'Molly' but 'Jenny' fits the rhymes with Kilkenney, and penny.)
She swore, then, that she loves you, and would never lie to you.
Things happen, and "you" wake up, early, you go to leave, but find that Jenny put water in your charges (gunpowder pre-measured into 'shots'/charges.), and you don't know she sent for Captain Farrell.
You get up, and get ready to go rob rich folk on the highways really early, but as you're leaving, a group of foot-soldiers are approaching, and with them, Captain Farrell.
So, you draw your pistol, and you realize your rapier is gone, water dripping from your pistol or charge-pouch.
Since you couldn't shoot them, or fight them with your sword, you get taken prisoner.
There you are, in the Congo-- wrong story.
So. There you are, either a prisoner planning on your escape, or you made your escape, and the only person that you can think of to help is your brother, who's in the Army, stationed in Cork, or Killarney.
If he'll leave his post, and join you as a brigand, you think/feel/believe he'll be trustworthy, rather than your ex, 'sporting Jenny'.
And that's about it. Fade-out comments. Some people like driving carriages. Others like playing Hurly or Bowling.
But you, "you" like 'the juice of the barley' (beer/ale/whiskey), and "you" like "courting lovers" in the morning.
    That's pretty-much the song summed-up.
There are so many great versions. The Chieftans are the classic Folk sound. Thin Lizzy's version is an easy laid-back rock version. Metallica's is good. The Pogues' version is great. Gaelic Storm's version is fun; They're good at making classic Irish Folk/Traditional songs into fun bops.

They are actually touring in Georgia right now, so they are doing music live it’s just due to Geoff’s child being young and Eli and his wife having a new baby and Layne still has one young child at home. They like to stay close to Florida and do more things on RUclips.

Good reaction, DJ 👍 As others have said the song is a traditional Irish folk song from the 1600's. The lyrics used by VoicePlay are the same as those used by Irish rock group Thin Lizzy, who had a hit with it in the 1970's and Metallica, who recorded it in the 1990's. Colm McGuinness does a great, more traditional version of it.

So, apparently "whack" is a term for a drink or a shot. I had to laugh because when I looked it up, I found a post that was saying "Whack for your Daddio." LOL! I don't think this was a 50s song! I'm pretty sure it's "Whack for my daddy, oh!" But maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, this song has more fabulous runs than the Olympics!

The basic concept of the song is about a highwayman who robs a man, and takes the money to his lover. While he's sleeping, she either either betrays his location to the man he stole from, or perhaps it even suggests that she had been unfaithful to the highwayman with that other man. Either way, the highwayman is startled awake when the angry man shows up in his bedroom and shoots him. Again, his girlfriend is apparently of no help since he ends up in prison for the murder of the man. I can't offhand recall the name of the 17th century Irish highwayman the song is presumed to be about, but there have been hundreds of versions over the years, from traditional Irish tunes all the way to Metallica's cover of it.

It's an Irish song that dates back to the 1600s. My Irish great-uncle sang it when he was at our bar in the house. When he got to Whack for the daddio, he was trying to get a refill of his whiskey from my dad. I was 12 back then 60 yrs ago - I thought he was singing for me. Who knew?

Listening to the original will be tough. It is an old traditional Irish song and the words change depending upon who sang it. VoicePlay chose to go with the lyrics from Metallica's cover of it I believe. I wish they had chosen to sing the more traditional lyrics. In the Behind The Scenes they were questioning what the lyrics mean and that they were not always the same. Geoff finally said, the words are just fun to sing!
It is considered to be something of an Irish Rebellion song and I know in some versions, the woman hid the thief's saber and filled his gun with water so he couldn't shoot as the powder would not be dry. In those, he obviously did not kill Capt. Farrell, but was instead arrested by him. And during the times this was seen as a rebellion song, even the theft was considered justified as it would have been an Irishman stealing from the English military.
And for me, it is certainly Eli's lines about the 'Whiskey' that run true. I need to keep reminding myself that he is NOT an Irishman as he sounds like an updated folk standard.

I was on the fence on this rendition at first. I had heard this song in a compilation of Irish folk songs a million times, and Voiceplay’s version was much more slow and forlorn. Then I read the lyrics and realized the character in the song is in prison. It is a song of regret, and I think Voiceplay nailed the tone of this song.

VP does the absolute best they can for the official audio, even if it requires a bunch of takes and multi-tracking and production effects and so on and so forth, because they _can_ . This doesn't mean they can't also perform live, it just means the audio recording of a live performance won't sound quite as good, but that's inherent to live performances anyway. There's always crowd noise at a live performance, and the acoustics of the venue are seldom anything like ideal, and so on and so forth. People like live performances for entirely different reasons, which remain valid even if the audio quality doesn't perfectly match up to the official audio track used in the music video.
They do still do live performances sometimes; there's a recording on YT of a live performance they did of Bruno, at a Disney event, which is definitely post-pandemic. Now, the official studio audio for Bruno features, at one point, a sampled goat scream. When they performed live, Geoff just screamed with his own voice. As you can imagine, it doesn't sound quite the same. But being in the audience for the live performance would still be an amazing experience. As I understand it, VP's position on this is that there's no reason to constrain the quality of their RUclips videos to what they can 100% perfectly reproduce live. Live performances have their own advantages and disadvantages. The overall arrangement of the song works for both, with minor adaptations.
Similarly, when Geoff sings a lead part, they often multi-track him for the official audio so they have the best possible quality on the bass line underneath the solo, but for live performances somebody else (whoever is available at the time, depending on the arrangement, e.g., Eli during Ursula's solo in Little Mermaid) will cover the bass part while Geoff sings lead.
The Bass Gang, in contrast, sometimes (particularly, for the first two volumes of May the Bass be With You) does arrangements that fundamentally wouldn't work at all for live performance, because four people are singing twenty or thirty parts all at once.
Going the other direction, Pentatonix uses a record label, which has the advantage of significantly boosting their notoriety and exposure, but it also means they don't get to keep most of the revenue from album sales and song streaming; so they focus much more heavily on what they can do in live performances, because they make most of their money from touring, which is the traditional model for popular music performance groups. Their official audio is cleaner and has better mixing, as you would expect, but in most cases it's basically just a cleaned up version of what they would perform live, as evidenced by the backstage small-room recording somebody made on a cellphone camera of them doing Daft Punk for a Make a Wish thing.
VoicePlay is somewhere in between. They can do their arrangements live, but the official audio often features a greater application of perfectionism and creativity.

the song is about a highwayman who murdered someone he stole money from in his wife/lover's chambers after she betrayed him. it's based on the story of a highwayman named Patrick Fleming who was executed in 1650. it's a traditional Irish drinking song turned ballad. my personal favorite version is by Thin Lizzy, but it's been covered by the likes of Metallica. if you want to hear a traditional version try The Dubliners. Ok, maybe I'm stupid (I very probably am) but I don't understand why some people are commenting their opinion that the song isn't good. Like, no offence, but you realise that DJ is a reactor right? He is giving his own opinion on someone else's music. He has no influence on how the song is created or performed. So you airing your opinion about how you feel about a song is going to do absolutely nothing, except perhaps show a marked lack of respect for someone's opinion.
