I think this song really shows how creative and imaginative these guys are. This song has been covered by very different artists, many times over and VP still manages to pull something new out of it. To me, it's truly magical.

this took me aback first time I heard it but it gets better the more you listen to it. I love the harmonies at the end and as you said Eli is just amazing ❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I love voiceplay, and I'm not afraid to admit that this song took me several replays to really come around to it. I honestly didn't think I would listen to it as much as I have, and I find more enjoyment in it each time it plays. This isn't my favorite song in general, but the beautiful voices and harmonies and overall arrangement are slowly and steadily winning me over.

I don't think the VP version will ever take the top spot for me on this song. Colm McGuinness would be top pick for me. They sound great, it just doesn't fit right to my ears for the song.

My grandfather taught me that song and the poem The Highwayman. They are some of my favorites. Love this version of the song.

I was also a little surprised by how different Voiceplay's take was, not in a bad way, it just took some time to get my brain to understand what I was hearing. But the more I listen to this version, the more I love it!

I've heard some reactors that were disappointed that it wasn't more like Metallica. I don't think they had a clue how old this Irish ditty actually is. I really like their version. It reminds me of my childhood when my Irish great-uncle sang it (I thought it was to me but I think now he was plying my dad with the song so he'd make him a drink. My dad was a bartender before he went to Lockheed at Cape Canaveral. He missed the bar so we had one built into the house and his buddies came over).

I love story-telling folk songs, probably why I liked the Peter Paul and Mary version better than Thin Lizzie. But it's Voiceplay for the win, this is amazing!! It captures the essence of the story as well as the brilliant musicality.

In the seventies we played the Thin Lizzy version with our little band and i loved it, but the VP version is so different and i love it too.

Eli is amazing, but I get chills every time they let Omar's voice just kind of hang in space by itself. To me, that's just such a beautiful, powerful moment in the song.

Celtic Thunder does a great version too, I've never heard of the other ones before. I've always known it as an Irish ballad. Still a great song tho. I'll now have to ho check out the other versions as well. Great reaction Lyle❤😊

I was more familiar with the Thin Lizzy than the Metallica cover as well I had to watch twice too. The world and it's mother has done this song Dubliners, Irish Rovers, Celtic Thunder and many other groups. Great reaction.

I know and really like the version done by Celtic Thunder in 2011, but this one is certainly interesting also. Have you ever listened to any songs by McFly? I really love All About You, Obviously and Five Colours In Her Hair, but they have many more from over the years.

As a Brit with Irish blood in me, and an old one, I am much more familiar with the Dubliners, or Thins LIzzy doing this so I'll need some time to get this version into my head I think. But that's a personal thing and not to say they haven't done something amazing once again. It just feels to me that they've ripped the Irish heart out of it. Is it because the guys have no Celt in them?

Tears to my eyes.... Last time I heard that song my Irish ( Eva of Clan McGuire ) would hum it in her nursing home... still teary eyed... She would sing it with a sweeter sound very similar to Voiceplay... Even when she had Alzheimer, she would sing / hum this sweetly... still a-cryin'.

I like Geoff. He is very talented. But I prefer the soothing sound of Tim Foust. Voice play is good but I get confused sometimes because they have so many guest singers.

  • @pauldshan

I didn't like this one. They Nerf'ed the lyrics, made it a lilting ballad instead of one that really moves along. Their arrangement was good and execution was stellar as always, but what they did to the song was...wrong. And of all the covers, I've only heard one version where Captain/Colonel Farrell got shot.

    • @parkerbrown-nesbit1747

Agree. They've taken a rousing outlaw song and turned it into pap.

Never liked Omar. He's essentially Cesar without the emotion.
