Yet another video showcasing the mastery of the blues and guitar by the late, great legendary Stevie Ray Vaughn, Here is my reaction to LITTLE WING, first video.
When Stevie plays he enters into a different plane of spiritual existence that us mere mortals can only dream of attaining.
I think plenty of players "go there." ( or near there, at least)
The difference, Stevie can brings us with him. Witnessing an SRV performance is like having *your* soul tazered with music.
@@yzScott All great musicians can bring us with them on occasion. Joe Zawinul could create a similar tension and release in his best solos, for instance. His friend the great Wayne Shorter could indeed too! The we have the marvelous Lyle Mays, and so on. I could list hundreds of musicians here, from many genres of music.
SRV didn't plug his guitar into an amp, he plugged it directly into his soul.
I'm an Austin 🇨🇱 man and started going to see Stevie Ray in the mid 70s. 😁 Used to pay a $2.50 cover to see SRV in clubs like the Back Room, the One Night, and Antone's in Austin. 😲 I'm 67 years old. My first concert was seeing Led Zeppelin in 1970. 😯 To this day I've still never seen anyone master the guitar like Stevie! 🎸💯 Saw Stevie being wiped down backstage at the Coliseum with wet towels, we thought he was going to OD right in front of us. 😩 Thank you Stevie for the laughter 😆 and the tears! 😭 You touched our hearts ❤️ and our souls. 😇 When a friend called me to tell me Stevie died I turned on the radio and they were playing "Llife Without You"; still get teary eyed when I hear it today. 😢 We miss you Stevie. A true guitar god and blues man. Austin has a Stevie Ray statue at Auditorium Shores where people still leave flowers and roaches (the good kind)! 🤗 He was our's for a long time and thank God that after the Texas Flood album he became universally known, loved, and admired. 🥰 RIP SRV, you are loved and missed by all of us....😎😘

When people say "(S)he never learned to read music," it seems like what they mean is that the music is just coming from them without any kind of effort, or learning, or sacrifice. Make no mistakes, my friends: this man LEARNED how to play his guitar, through long dermined effort, long before he ever got on a stage, long before he ever made this recording. He may be responding to the spirit in him, but he _LEARNED_ where to put his hands on his instrument in order to take US there with him. ^_^
Supposedly, Elvis, Eric Clapton, Tommy Emmanuel, and Eddie Van Halen could not read sheet music either! But you are right, this man practiced until his fingertips were about destroyed, then super glued them to be able to keep on practicing. His music sounds like riffs, but his music is so structured and disciplined. And yes, he also poured his heart and soul into it. RIP to the GOAT, gone 30 years now!

This was a cover of his idol Hendrix and arguably considered far better. He did covers from other greats as well, not for the usual reasons but to breathe new life into their songs. He never played anything the same twice, just sort of channeled his soul into his guitar and let it do the talking for him. He did a 50's song with his brother Jimmie on the doublenecker that will make you scratch your head. Superstitious with Stevie Wonder, Texas Flood with Al King, Tin Pan Alley with Johnny Copeland, and Little Sister with Jeff Healy. He was authentic in that he wanted to showcase other artists and genre's that are overlooked or being forgotten. Made the blues relevant again and many of the artists of the past had a major resurgence in popularity and still perform this very day. Truly a unique master of the strings. He never strived to be a popular rocker, just a Texas bluesman paying homage to his idols.
I'm glad he didn't do the turn with Bowie and stayed true to his art.
Yes, great comment. Totally agree, and while our man here may not know it, Stevie Ray played on David Bowie's Let's Dance LP. Bowie offered him the chance to go on the Serious Moonlight tour and SRV turned him down. Shortly after, SRV & DT's debut LP Texas Flood was released and that was it, they broke huge in 1983! Another great song no one has mentioned yet is Dirty Pool. I have some early live versions from 1981 and 1982 and they are some of the grittiest tunes I have ever had the pleasure to listen too. Real nasty!!!
I recommend anyone who enjoys Stevie Ray Vaughan to seek out some of the live recordings from 1980 to 1983. The earliest years are recorded in small clubs, many in Austin, Texas of course like Antone's and Fitzgerald's, and some other joints like Holiday Inn and small clubs and bars throughout the southern US. Some of the shows I have from 80 to 82 are 3 hours long! And its before he met Bowie or had an LP so its raunchy and raw. He played a lot of Jimi songs, including Jam 292, Manic Depression, VC(SR) etc. during those small early gigs. I probably have a good 70 or 80 shows from before Texas Flood was released. There are sites with tons of unofficial releases, mostly live audience recordings. But yeah, if you enjoy SRV, check out those for some serious enjoyment!
J Gordon all you said is very true, Stevie was very humble, don’t think he knew how great he was.... when he got offf drugs and alcohol he was seriously afraid that he wouldn’t be as good.... but he blew everyone away, Eric Clapton’s words not mine, Eric and everyone was blown away before he got clean.... but afterwords everybody just looked with there mouths dropped just like us fans do.
I believe that Jimi approves of Stevie's rendition of this beautiful song. We lost such an amazing talent when we lost Stevie (and Jimi). I read that Stevie used 13 guage strings (the thickest metal strings) and put krazy glue on his calluses to harden them so he could play better.

True about the 13 gauge. I never heard about the fingertips, but from what he’s said, I don’t think that is true.
When his calluses tore off, he super glued them back on. That's the story of the super glue.
I've watch quite a few SRV reaction videos. Most of them a speechless at the end.
SRV was not a musician. He was a conduit through which the soul and pain of the blues flowed. That's why he never 'ran out' of melody/solo lines...because the spirit moved through him.

Just before the 8:20 mark you can observe Stevie re-enter the conscious state and look at the bass player and smile. He then re-enters and immerses himself into the plane he goes to when he’s channeling the spiritual flow of energy he receives and endows us with his musical genius.

You should check out Stevie's 1989 Austin City Limits show! That whole thing is loaded with gems! "Riviera Paradise" was the last song on that show, and perfectly encapsulates his versatility as a guitarist!

I loved SRV when I first heard his playing. Unfortunately he had already passed by then. He is definitely divinely guided when playing. This and Lenny are two of my favorites.
Stevie Ray Vaughn was mentored by the best of, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Johnny Copeland, those Bluesmen created a legend.. thank them for sharing an awesome sound of the real Blues, my humble opinion.. and thank you for your reaction.

It looked like you almost got the holey ghost. Check out an interview with him and see how much trouble he had speaking with people. I think the guitar was his voice, emotion and comfort zone. Another Great choice.

Stevie was always in beast mode there are no bad preformces or off nights who else could say that never missed a beat when listening to Stevie you just need to buckle up and enjoy the ride he is going to take you on.
When you paused it and talked about the valley and mountain, where Stevie Ray switched up the tempo, that portion is actually the tune known as "A Minor Jam", as played by Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock. He also throws in a few other licks of Jimi in this song, like Castles Made of Sand and Power of Soul.
My reaction to the work of Hendrix is coming to the channel, I love Stevie but Hendrix is still my go to for different reasons

But I hear ya man. I dig SRV big time, but Jimi is like Beethoven, Brahms and Bach. Still be relevant and listened to 500 years from now. Trust me man, I am about as hardcore as you can get when it comes to the Man. He is and has been #1 for me since day I became experienced and heard Jimi for the first time when I was 14.
I hope to see some of your reactions here on Jimi vids. MG from BoG, Johnny B. Goode and Purple Haze from Berkeley, Foxey Lady from Maui, VC(SR), Newport 69 footage, and Jam Back at the House/Beginnings from Woodstock among a few others would all be great to see you react to. But I am highly doubtful even with pausing they would stay up. But man, I would LOVE to be proven wrong on that! All of those videos I mentioned are amazing man and your reactions would be priceless I know!
Digging your reactions, can't wait to see when you hit Deep Purple, Grand Funk Railroad, Derek and the Dominos, Black Sabbath etc. I do hope that you can do some Jimi stuff, but I have only seen Hey Joe from Beat Beat Beat and VC(SR) from Stockholm 69 live performance videos reacted to by other YTers. Sadly those version aren't super spectacular, like the ones I mentioned above. They are good, but there are many better Jimi video performances than those two.

SO GLAD you found your way to SRV. i was lucky enough to be the youngest to a very diversified family as it came to music and cut my teeth growing up on everything from my mom singing tie a yellow ribbon around that old oak tree...and my dad who had many reel to reels from Cher band of gypsy to Elvis to mama and the papas... and my brothers and sisters were equally diverse. so i have quit the collection of music and ways to play it.. i always loved Hendrix and when Stevie Ray Von hit the seen i was all in.. i was lucky enough to live in Worcester Ma and got to see him play in Bristol,CT August-16-1988, August-24-1989 and my favorite 2nd row center stage 4th of July 1990.. could you even imagine a world if those two were still alive and rocking out...how amazing that would be...
Jimi Hendrix Band of Gypsy's performance of "Machine Gun" from the second show at the Filmore East on January 1, 1970! Also "Who knows" is a favorite of mine. One of the greatest live performances of all time!
Right on brother, being Jimi freak I am, I have asked others to do MG. But sadly, will never happen on YT. 99% of Jimi stuff won';t survive the copyright. I have a BitChute channel and uploading ALL my Jimi Hendrix footage I have amassed over last 35 years. At least they will be somewhere for people to see! Little Wing was a Hendrix song and not to minimize Jimi's talent at all, but Stevie really turns it into an emotional experience. Saw him live twice, best $13.50 I ever spent in my life -

Kenny Wayne Shepherd is grossly unappreciated. His songs "Blue on Black" and especially "Last Goodbye" are incredible - and the singer (whose name escapes me at the moment) is amazing in his own right.

I just stumbled across your channel, and your reactions are amazing. I can feel what you're feeling through your facial expressions, with no need to interrupt the music every ten seconds. Dropping your jaw says more than anything, and is so appropriate for this performance. I like the part where you said it's his soul that's controlling the music. So true, it's like nobody in the building knows where his next notes are coming from, not even him. So appropriate for a song called "Little Wing" that his playing flies like this.

Where he played with one hand is not so hard to do. It's hammering on and off with pull offs and slides. It's particularly smooth sounding because the strings aren't plucked. Now, I said it's not so hard to do, what is hard to do is do it as easily and perfect as Stevie Ray.
Stevie is rare. He's got something extra. He's like a Leonardo da Vinci. Like God gave him an extra spark plug in his brain, a super power. If we're still around in five hundred years, humans that is, Stevie Ray is still going to be blowing people away. Even if a way is figured out to plug micro chips with knowledge into our brains. It's not the knowledge, it's what ya do with it.
I saw Stevie Ray live back when his first album came out. I knew nothing about him, hadn't even heard a song of his on the radio, had no idea what to expect, only knew he was supposed to be a good guitar player. The venue was a college lecture auditorium, shaped like a deep half bowl, all the seats were good. I was looking down with a clear view of the stage. He came out onto the stage already playing the guitar, blasting that high speed instrumental song 'Testify'. I knew in seconds that I was going to be seeing something special. (I recommend Mr. DramaSyde react to 'Testify' from Live at El Mocambo. That song roars! It was an enlightenment of sorts, I understood the power of music, the power of art. I recall saying to myself, 'My God, this is it. This is what it's all about!' The other life changing thing is I bought my first guitar the day after seeing him. I went on to study classical guitar, got pretty good at it. A good classical guitar player can be amazing too. Blazing speed and perfection, notes raining on you like heaven opened up. I feel privileged to have seen Stevie Ray. Know how you wish you could go back in time and see something great like Jesus deliver the sermon on the mount. Or hear and see Beethoven direct one of his great pieces. Maybe be there for Dr. Kings 'I had a dream' speech. Go to Woodstock (I was to young). Well, something legendary happened in my life-time and I was able to catch it. And thanks to film and video we can relive that bit of greatness, or else the future wouldn't have really understood just how amazing this performance really was. Words can't describe it. I tried to tell my dad what I had seen at the concert, words didn't work. My father said, 'He sounds like quite the showman.' Showman, that's the understatement of the millennium. Ten thousand perfectly placed and executed notes flying at ya like machine gun fire; grabbing your soul and taking it for a space ride, a blind person could see God at a Stevie Ray concert.
I think I might have hit on it, and it was simple and sounded silly in a way, but it could be true... God gave Stevie Ray a super power.

That guitar is Wife #1. One day Christopher Cross (guy who sings "If you get lost between the moon and New York City"...theme song to the movie Arthur) went into Heart of Texas Music in Austin, up on Lamar St., told the owner Ray Hennig he had a gig that night, and needed a PA, but didn't have any money, and needed some help. Ray always supported local artists, and said he'd take a trade; asked Cross what he could do on it. Cross said all he had was this junk Fender strat; Hennig laughs and says he'll take it anyway. Hennig puts the strat in the front of his store, not really paying it any mind. Next day SRV comes in and buys it. Now it is just sitting in brother Jimmy Vaughan's gun safe collecting dust. Lot of Texas music history on that ax.

Ive always thought he let a litttle bit of Jimi in there as an homage at the end, if you watch Jimi play this song I think at woodstock he did similar things with the amp and guitar
