Guitar preference is subjective. We can all notice when someone is great (i.e. Jimmy and Stevie) but when it comes to the best technically, Mr. Hindrix and Mr Vaughan are among the best no matter who anyones favorite is, we can all admit their both out of this world.

It's kind of better that way... the "waaait, WHAT??" moment is just so much fun. A similar thing happened with Jake from Greta Van Fleet: he was playing guitar behind his head, and got it caught in his hair when he tried to bring it back. He managed to still play it well enough, while a tech helped untangle things, that one viewer who had looked away didn't notice anything wrong and only found out about the mishap when reading others' comments. Then there was the time Adrian from Iron Maiden fell on his back when he tripped on a cord, and he kept playing from the floor. Good times, good times!
Yeah, Stevie almost always started out with his Number One guitar (the beat-up Strat) and would switch out with Scotch (the second guitar in this video) when Number One popped a string. He also played Charley a lot, especially during the song "Life Without You," written for his friend Charley Wirz who made the Charley Strat-style Danelectro guitar for him in 1984. If you watch the Texas Flood video from the 1989 Inaugural "Celebration of Blues" gig, you'll see Stevie pops a string on Number One and replaces it with Scotch and then is back playing Number One when he pops a string on Scotch. Rene was constantly restringing and refretting Stevie's guitars 'cause Stevie was just that physical a player.

The switch took exactly 4 bars. By the end of the song, Number 1 was restrung, tuned and back in its stand, ready to be played. This was from his second Austin City Limits performance. October 10, 1989.

Stevie Ray had a super guitar tech that traveled with him. I read how before a concert a heavy metal rack holding the big powerful lights fell onto Stevie's guitars breaking all of them. His guitar tech swapped some parts between them and got a couple working in time for the show.
I feel this way -- Stevie is definitely my top fav. player, but we all have our favorites according to our peronal taste. To say any one player is the THE greatest above all others is just not a valid statement - because there have just been too many incredible players to say any single one is the GOAT. Kudos to Stevie's longtime guitar tech Rene Martinez on that smooth guitar switch. Rene was always in the wings waiting with another guitar for Stevie when he broke a string. He broke a string. Before you make up your mind could I suggest checking out Gary Moore. There's a Hendrix cover he does " Red House ". You would be depriving yourself of experiencing one of the greats. Gary was born in Northern Ireland in 1952 and passed away in 2011.. He played with Skid Row, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II, and otthers. He finally settled on electric blues and was incredible. Thank you.

No doubt Jimmy and Stevie are both great, love them both. In my opinion and I've seen them both; I think Jimmy is much stronger as a writer and Stevie is stronger as a guitarist. Really.... they're great at both but that's just my opinion. Thanks for the reaction!!!!!
I prefer not to think of one being better than the other (although being born and raised in Austin TX probably makes me biased towards SRV). Anyway, I prefer to think of them together somewhere jamming together. Somewhere no strings ever break. No TV producers ever signal for them to wrap it up. Somewhere they don't have to label what they play.

They asked Stevie Ray to play guitar on new recordings with Jimi's voice. He laid it all out just like Jimi had done. He knew just how to play it exactly like Jimi. He cut his teeth on Jimi 100%!!!! Any recording of Jimi nowadays, Stevie Ray is playing. Jimi's family gets the money just like they should have from the beginning.

I admired Jimmie, he was innovative and rock. I love SRV but I love the blues. My preference. Stevie would probably say Jimmie was best. He revered those who came before him.
Always hear influences of other guitarists in SRV playing more than Jimi-except when Stevie does a Hendrix song. Love SRV vibrato-shakes the heck out of his guitars
I Love the guitar started going to concerts in 1974 went to see every great guitarist i could in all styles and genres at least 250 different ones. My top 3 all time Jimi Hendrix no. 3 wish i could have seen him live might have been no.1. Stevie Ray Vaughn no.2 and the best of them all Roy Buchanan. Check out "Roy's Bluz" 1976 from Austin city limits. Roy was the best and also the most soulful when he would play "sweet dreams" or" the messiah will come again" I would be weeping.
Dude, Jimi is also my favorite with SRV coming right after. I agree, can't we just love them both? Jimi was 27 when he died. Have you heard the Electric Ladyland or Axis Bold As Love albums? My favorite guitarists after those two are: Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, David Gilmour, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Peter Green, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. I know what this song is about. Last 4th of July in NYC a big van pulled up across the street and I'm pretty sure it was a load of kids going to the beach picking up a few more kids, but some kids got out of the van to stretch a bit and this one gorgeous Hispanic girl in a bikini, somebody's sister I'm sure, about 16 years old, twerked in the middle of the street for all us porch people blazing on a hot day off. She had it all shaking! She knows the power she wields. God bless all the little sisters, especially that one! (For the record, I wasn't evil about it. Just enjoyed the show and was happy to see that some self evident truths haven't been completely extincted by those in control who think humanity and its nature needs a boot in its brain. CHICKS ROCK!)
It's an almost linear progression: Robert Johnson-Bo Diddley-Jimi Hendrix-Stevie Ray Vaughan (with a fantastic diversion called David Gilmour who is essentially concurrent with Hendrix but taking it in a different direction). We build new giants on the shoulders of the old ones, and it should necessarily improve or re-imagine to the limits of human ability. No shame on any of them, no recriminations, total respect.
I have read so many times about how Jimmie influenced Stevie, and there is no denying that. However, hardly anyone talks about the fact that Jimmie said he was also heavily influenced by some of the greats that came before him, and there is sure nothing wrong with that either. Every great has that special creator that has touched them somehow. Both Jimmie and Stevie were both total blessing to this world...
The whole Hendrix or SRV question has a (for some) surprising answer. It's not such much a subjective issue, but rather it depends on what you mean by 'best', 'greatest', etc. If you mean who played from somewhere inside with beautiful abandon - Hendrix. If you mean who was always stunning and never less than the last time you heard him, always intense - SRV. But if you mean who was the most significant, who was the biggest influence on guitar playing & music in general, and who could play so pretty it takes you breath, and who has the more impressive catalog of great music . . . the answer is Eric Clapton. Nobody like him; he started it all, it all comes from him, and no one else continued to put-out stunning music his entire career. As much as with Benny Goodman, Elvis, and The Beatles, there is music before Clapton and music after Clapton - he changed everything. And don’t listen to anyone who suggests Clapton’s ‘Tears In Heaven’ or ‘Wonderful Tonight’ - those are fine, but not at all representative of Eric Clapton’s body of work or contribution to music.
btw... the wah wah pedel Stevie is using, belonged to Jimi. (it's a long story, but Stevie's brother Jimmie toured with Jimi, and eventually got his wah wah and gave it to Stevie. So there is your connection. 2 masters linked, and there are more links than that, if you wanna do the research...

I admired Jimmie, he was innovative and rock. I love SRV but I love the blues. My preference. Stevie would probably say Jimmie was best. He revered those who came before him.

I Love the guitar started going to concerts in 1974 went to see every great guitarist i could in all styles and genres at least 250 different ones. My top 3 all time Jimi Hendrix no. 3 wish i could have seen him live might have been no.1. Stevie Ray Vaughn no.2 and the best of them all Roy Buchanan. Check out "Roy's Bluz" 1976 from Austin city limits. Roy was the best and also the most soulful when he would play "sweet dreams" or" the messiah will come again" I would be weeping.

Dude, Jimi is also my favorite with SRV coming right after. I agree, can't we just love them both? Jimi was 27 when he died. Have you heard the Electric Ladyland or Axis Bold As Love albums? My favorite guitarists after those two are: Jimmy Page, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, David Gilmour, Rory Gallagher, Gary Moore, Peter Green, Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. I know what this song is about. Last 4th of July in NYC a big van pulled up across the street and I'm pretty sure it was a load of kids going to the beach picking up a few more kids, but some kids got out of the van to stretch a bit and this one gorgeous Hispanic girl in a bikini, somebody's sister I'm sure, about 16 years old, twerked in the middle of the street for all us porch people blazing on a hot day off. She had it all shaking! She knows the power she wields.

It's an almost linear progression: Robert Johnson-Bo Diddley-Jimi Hendrix-Stevie Ray Vaughan (with a fantastic diversion called David Gilmour who is essentially concurrent with Hendrix but taking it in a different direction). We build new giants on the shoulders of the old ones, and it should necessarily improve or re-imagine to the limits of human ability. No shame on any of them, no recriminations, total respect.
I have read so many times about how Jimmie influenced Stevie, and there is no denying that. However, hardly anyone talks about the fact that Jimmie said he was also heavily influenced by some of the greats that came before him, and there is sure nothing wrong with that either. Every great has that special creator that has touched them somehow. Both Jimmie and Stevie were both total blessing to this world...

The whole Hendrix or SRV question has a (for some) surprising answer. It's not such much a subjective issue, but rather it depends on what you mean by 'best', 'greatest', etc. If you mean who played from somewhere inside with beautiful abandon - Hendrix. If you mean who was always stunning and never less than the last time you heard him, always intense - SRV. But if you mean who was the most significant, who was the biggest influence on guitar playing & music in general, and who could play so pretty it takes you breath, and who has the more impressive catalog of great music . . . the answer is Eric Clapton.
Nobody like him; he started it all, it all comes from him, and no one else continued to put-out stunning music his entire career. As much as with Benny Goodman, Elvis, and The Beatles, there is music before Clapton and music after Clapton - he changed everything.
And don’t listen to anyone who suggests Clapton’s ‘Tears In Heaven’ or ‘Wonderful Tonight’ - those are fine, but not at all representative of Eric Clapton’s body of work or contribution to music.

btw... the wah wah pedel Stevie is using, belonged to Jimi. (it's a long story, but Stevie's brother Jimmie toured with Jimi, and eventually got his wah wah and gave it to Stevie. So there is your connection. 2 masters linked, and there are more links than that, if you wanna do the research...
