Srv played with extremely heavy 13 gauge strings, but he shakes the neck of his guitar to give it that vibrato that made his sound so unique. If you want to hear something SRV wrote himself, try Scuttlebuttin’ but be aware it’s very short.
This is what one of the greatest guitars players of all time looks like. He was only 35 when he died. Basically still a student of the game, but it was more than enough time for him to establish himself as one of the best guitar players the world has ever seen and probably the best blues guitarist ever.
You don't need to puff on any blunts, Stevie will get you where you need to be. Many greats have come before him and many will come next, but no one will ever play like SRV.

A quick note about SRV: He was equally a great human as he was a guitarist. His heroes, Albert King, BB King, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker, etc, all loved him because he was so humble and gracious. The 2nd thing is that he beat alcohol and drug addiction in late '86 and lived the rest of his life clean and sober and trying to help others get clean. He was truly a gift from the heavens. Huge SRV fan here, we lost him at such a tender age he was killed in a helicopter crash leaving a venue in Wisconsin. But we are blessed with the wonderful videos and his music will never die. You should check out " Steve Ray Vaughan- Tin Pan Alley (with Johnny Copeland)" Jonny Copeland is one of SRV's guitar heroes and they do this live performance together, it's just magical stuff guys, not to mention the song is Amazing, along with these two blues guitar legends! Although, his closest mentor was Albert King, but he had great respect and admiration for all the blues legends and made sure to show homage to them. In that length of time some artists become admired, respected, and even worshiped by some kid 40 or 50 years after they have stopped recording and that kid re-records the song. That's what you have here. Stevie Ray always tried to pay it back to the guys that he admired and this is one of those songs. The original artist was a black guy named Larry Davis and he recorded it in 1958. You can find a RUclips video of his version. The guitar can't compete with SRV's version here, but the lyrics are sweeter and easier to understand. This is the guy that may ACTUALLY have an experience that he drew on when he did the song. If you want to hear a cool version of this song just for fun ( wouldn't make a good reaction video ) search for the one that Stevie Ray does WITH Larry Davis doing the vocals.

Stevie Ray is the Best Player by far and I was a player for a few Cover Bands,in the 70’s thru 20. And own a Music store ,and listen to some great players but no one could match him .He also use Heavy strings.There are a few really good Players out there ,but not one has ever try to cover him, S.R.V.is a God,that’s why God took Him.R.I.P.Brother

Eric Clapton also had emotional breakdowns having to follow him and admitted to bugging out of Stevie's portion of a gig to keep confident in himself. Someone asked Clapton what he thought of SRV when he heard him. Eric replied, "It's time for me to retire."
My contriburtion: watch this again, and watch any one of his live performances. His eyes are closed most of the time. He opens them once in a while to find the microphone. Otherwise they're closed, and he's 'in the zone'. He felt every note he played, it wasn't intellectual or random like it is with most guitarists.
His brother Jimmy of the fabulous thunderbirds fame tells a story about how when they were young teens Stevie Ray would practice tell he would shread the calluses off his fingers and then crazy glue them back on and go back to practicing , that's how you get this good , it's called dedication
Saw them just a few months after this was recorded. When he came out, we worked our way up front to the stage. He just blew everyone away. He even wore same shirt! Thank goodness for the general admission shows back in the day, this in 1984. Was lucky enough to see him 3 more times with next 2 at same place as first time. Got to front on those 2 times. Still get chills watching his live at El Mocambo ,almost same show but added couple songs night I saw him. ❤️ ya Stevie

They make me giggle discussing the "flood" context, The song was written by Larry Davis, A black blues players in 1958. He died 1994, so he heard his song made popular again. I'm pretty sure he and other artists Stevie remade got some residuals, Stevie even barely broke even I was told until he got on MTV

Life Without You live at Capitol theater is incredible. He wrote it for a friend who passed. He uses a guitar built by the friend (Charlie Wirz) in the video.

I was very fortunate . I got to see SRV in the early 80’s in Santa Fe NM at the Indian center. Saw him play the guitar behind his back, and also saw him play the guitar with his teeth.
I'm from New Zealand....back in 1989, Stevi headlined the "pop concert" in Auckland city. I was a stage hand for this, and a dozen more shows. Through guitar player magazine was where I first came into contact with the man who single handedly revived the blues....a TRUE gentleman, and sadly, sadly missed monster of a musician. I believe from that, that I was one of the first people in my country to get his epiphonal first album, Texas flood, featuring this track. He reportedly never, played the same thing, the same way twice. Most of his vids are awesome....but this particular video, in my opinion, rates as one of, if not THE BEST electric blues guitar performance EVER RECORDED. I remember standing next to a beautiful blonde woman (Stevis companion at that time), during his soundcheck....soaking it all up, and unconsciously singing along, when this beautiful woman asked if I knew Stevi. Only from his records, and what I'd read of him, I remember saying, and what an honor it was to see and hear him live. I was (and still am) totally in awe watching and listening as the band ran through a few intros and choruses. When they finished, I watched as Stevi walked towards us, then when he reached us, she asked my name and introduced me to one of my guitar heroes......His hands were huge compared to mine, and I still remember how gently he shook my hand.......one of my greatest memories. We talked for what seemed like hours....but was only a few minutes, and I'll never ever forget it. I got to spend my breaks with Stevis guitar tech, Eddie Martinez (I hope that's right...) and even got to play some of his guitars.....included his beat up vintage strat that he plays on this track.....his action, string height and gauge made it impossible for me to play......those hands I shook, were truly on another level. Later during his concert, as I stood side of stage with Eddie, Stevis JTM 50 Marshall amp suddenly died and Eddie grabs me and pulls me on stage to quickly swap it out, and Stevi gave us a nod, and a smile....getting tearful just thinking about it. My father was my first guitar influence, and after receiving Texas Flood, I played him a few tracks, and he was impressed.....my father wasn't often impressed with my choices of music (and it's only grown more extreme and diverse over the years...lol...) but I remember coming home from I don't know where, when dad told me that Stevi had died in a helicopter crash......I remember walking away and crying for about an hour......feeling crushed. He was in a league of his own....some called him the embodiment of Jimi Hendrix.....Stevi Ray Vaughan single handedly brought the blues back into mainstream consciousness and left behind a legacy for the world.....a great guy....my friend....He's with God now, and I believe he's jamming with all the 'cats' he dug, and who dug him that sadly have passed away too.....including my dad. Rest in Peace.....all of you, and thanks for all you've left us.....Love, from an eternally grateful, aspiring guitarist.
Stevie's last name is pronounced like Dawn, only drop the D and add a V. Stevie had this way of walking out on stage and within a few notes, it was like he just zoned out and let the music just pour out of his soul! Stevie's friend, the blues legend B.B. King said that it was like he just tuned into a radio station, and we all got to listen! Stevie's band, Double Trouble, still plays together once in a while with guest guitarists to try and fill Stevie's shoes.....like that can be done. My brother and I have been blessed to jam with them from time to time. They're really nice guys, and real down to earth. Each of them is a true master at their instrument! Chris (Layton), the drummer, and I got along real well, and I hope they're all doing well as I haven't seen them since before Covid. I'll have to try and catch up with them soon. Stevie Ray Vaughan was a one of a kind he not only played behind his back and head but he played with his teeth, backwards, one hand, broken string, switched guitar in the middle of a solo and never missed a beat, tune his guitar while playing, adjust his AMP'S while playing one handed, even using his elbow playing Little Wing but he is the only one who played behind his back while singing long then anyone ever could. Stevie Ray started playing guitar when he was 7 yrs old when his older brother Jimmy Vaughan started playing guitar, Jimmy Vaughan is a great guitarist In his own right who had a band called The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Although Stevie Ray's career only span a short 7 years he accomplished so much starting with the release of his album Texas Flood that he recorded in only 2 days and he is in The Austin Music Hall Of Fame, in 2000 was inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame, he won 6 Grammys, 10 Austin Music Awards, 5 W.C.Handy Awards ,Entertainer Of The Year, Instermental Of The Year and in 2015 he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in only 7 years. Stevie Ray was an amazing man with a heart of gold, he made alot of money but never spent alot on himself and bought hand me down guitars like the one he's playing, that guitar used to belong to another musician named Christopher Cross and he named it Lenny after his first wife Lenora Baily who he married in 1979but divorced in 1988 so then he renamed it #1. The song Texas Flood was written 2 men in 1955 and released in 1958 named Larry Davis and Joseph Scott and alot of artists use it including Stevie Ray and the song helped Stevie Ray's career catapult to what it was so when Stevie Ray found out Larry Davis never got paid his royalties Stevie Ray paid Larry Davis out of his own packet. Stevie Ray was loved and respected by many great Blues artists and Stevie Ray said his biggest influence was his big brother Jimmy Vaughan and then all the great Blues artists after that like B.B King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Watters, Booker T.Jones and especially Albert King who actually was Stevie Ray's godfather. It was a very sad day August 27,1990 when at the age of 35 Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash in East Troy Wisconsin after playing a show.alot of people miss him. Idk anything as for setting up musical equipment, but difference between SRV and others is this example. I love Prince. Purple Rain is an ICONIC ALBUM. One night he came out with this huge Bass guitar. It was white with a cool design. He played that guitar and it was like I heard it but couldn't understand it. SRV, he could play, and you heard it and understood it. Not a knock on Prince at all. An iconic entertainer, singer, musician. Miss both those men..
Lucky to see him in 3 bars in Dallas in the early 80s before for he got famous. Last time Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were sitting at the table next to us just having a beer. I heard they collaborated together later. Never paid a cover. Good times.
Is it not madness that through out music history we get blessed now and then with these amazing musical geniuses and they always become super famous and end up dying waaay to young! That is one thing that has always bugged the shit out of me. In every genre of music you have those that stand out and most are "game changers" to music but we never get to keep them long sadly.

Saw them just a few months after this was recorded. When he came out, we worked our way up front to the stage. He just blew everyone away. He even wore same shirt! Thank goodness for the general admission shows back in the day, this in 1984. Was lucky enough to see him 3 more times with next 2 at same place as first time. Got to front on those 2 times. Still get chills watching his live at El Mocambo ,almost same show but added couple songs night I saw him. ❤️ ya Stevie

They make me giggle discussing the "flood" context, The song was written by Larry Davis, A black blues players in 1958. He died 1994, so he heard his song made popular again. I'm pretty sure he and other artists Stevie remade got some residuals, Stevie even barely broke even I was told until he got on MTV

Life Without You live at Capitol theater is incredible. He wrote it for a friend who passed. He uses a guitar built by the friend (Charlie Wirz) in the video.

I was very fortunate . I got to see SRV in the early 80’s in Santa Fe NM at the Indian center. Saw him play the guitar behind his back, and also saw him play the guitar with his teeth.
I'm from New Zealand....back in 1989, Stevi headlined the "pop concert" in Auckland city. I was a stage hand for this, and a dozen more shows. Through guitar player magazine was where I first came into contact with the man who single handedly revived the blues....a TRUE gentleman, and sadly, sadly missed monster of a musician. I believe from that, that I was one of the first people in my country to get his epiphonal first album, Texas flood, featuring this track. He reportedly never, played the same thing, the same way twice. Most of his vids are awesome....but this particular video, in my opinion, rates as one of, if not THE BEST electric blues guitar performance EVER RECORDED.
I remember standing next to a beautiful blonde woman (Stevis companion at that time), during his soundcheck....soaking it all up, and unconsciously singing along, when this beautiful woman asked if I knew Stevi. Only from his records, and what I'd read of him, I remember saying, and what an honor it was to see and hear him live. I was (and still am) totally in awe watching and listening as the band ran through a few intros and choruses. When they finished, I watched as Stevi walked towards us, then when he reached us, she asked my name and introduced me to one of my guitar heroes......His hands were huge compared to mine, and I still remember how gently he shook my hand.......one of my greatest memories. We talked for what seemed like hours....but was only a few minutes, and I'll never ever forget it.
I got to spend my breaks with Stevis guitar tech, Eddie Martinez (I hope that's right...) and even got to play some of his guitars.....included his beat up vintage strat that he plays on this track.....his action, string height and gauge made it impossible for me to play......those hands I shook, were truly on another level. Later during his concert, as I stood side of stage with Eddie, Stevis JTM 50 Marshall amp suddenly died and Eddie grabs me and pulls me on stage to quickly swap it out, and Stevi gave us a nod, and a smile....getting tearful just thinking about it.
My father was my first guitar influence, and after receiving Texas Flood, I played him a few tracks, and he was impressed.....my father wasn't often impressed with my choices of music (and it's only grown more extreme and diverse over the years...lol...) but I remember coming home from I don't know where, when dad told me that Stevi had died in a helicopter crash......I remember walking away and crying for about an hour......feeling crushed.
He was in a league of his own....some called him the embodiment of Jimi Hendrix.....Stevi Ray Vaughan single handedly brought the blues back into mainstream consciousness and left behind a legacy for the world.....a great guy....my friend....He's with God now, and I believe he's jamming with all the 'cats' he dug, and who dug him that sadly have passed away too.....including my dad.

Stevie's last name is pronounced like Dawn, only drop the D and add a V. Stevie had this way of walking out on stage and within a few notes, it was like he just zoned out and let the music just pour out of his soul! Stevie's friend, the blues legend B.B. King said that it was like he just tuned into a radio station, and we all got to listen! Stevie's band, Double Trouble, still plays together once in a while with guest guitarists to try and fill Stevie's shoes.....like that can be done. My brother and I have been blessed to jam with them from time to time. They're really nice guys, and real down to earth. Each of them is a true master at their instrument! Chris (Layton), the drummer, and I got along real well, and I hope they're all doing well as I haven't seen them since before Covid. I'll have to try and catch up with them soon. Anyways, welcome to the SRV rabbit hole! Some advice? While there isn't such a thing as a bad Stevie video, you should probably check out a song called Little Wing next.

Stevie Ray Vaughan was a one of a kind he not only played behind his back and head but he played with his teeth, backwards, one hand, broken string, switched guitar in the middle of a solo and never missed a beat, tune his guitar while playing, adjust his AMP'S while playing one handed, even using his elbow playing Little Wing but he is the only one who played behind his back while singing long then anyone ever could. Stevie Ray started playing guitar when he was 7 yrs old when his older brother Jimmy Vaughan started playing guitar, Jimmy Vaughan is a great guitarist In his own right who had a band called The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Although Stevie Ray's career only span a short 7 years he accomplished so much starting with the release of his album Texas Flood that he recorded in only 2 days and he is in The Austin Music Hall Of Fame, in 2000 was inducted into The Blues Hall Of Fame, he won 6 Grammys, 10 Austin Music Awards, 5 W.C.Handy Awards ,Entertainer Of The Year, Instermental Of The Year and in 2015 he was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in only 7 years. Stevie Ray was an amazing man with a heart of gold, he made alot of money but never spent alot on himself and bought hand me down guitars like the one he's playing, that guitar used to belong to another musician named Christopher Cross and he named it Lenny after his first wife Lenora Baily who he married in 1979but divorced in 1988 so then he renamed it #1. The song Texas Flood was written 2 men in 1955 and released in 1958 named Larry Davis and Joseph Scott and alot of artists use it including Stevie Ray and the song helped Stevie Ray's career catapult to what it was so when Stevie Ray found out Larry Davis never got paid his royalties Stevie Ray paid Larry Davis out of his own packet. Stevie Ray was loved and respected by many great Blues artists and Stevie Ray said his biggest influence was his big brother Jimmy Vaughan and then all the great Blues artists after that like B.B King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Watters, Booker T.Jones and especially Albert King who actually was Stevie Ray's godfather. It was a very sad day August 27,1990 when at the age of 35 Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash in East Troy Wisconsin after playing a show.alot of people miss him. Sorry about my comment being so long but I et really carried away talking about Stevie Ray Vaughan. Idk anything as for setting up musical equipment, but difference between SRV and others is this example. I love Prince. Purple Rain is an ICONIC ALBUM. One night he came out with this huge Bass guitar. It was white with a cool design. He played that guitar and it was like I heard it but couldn't understand it. SRV, he could play, and you heard it and understood it.
Not a knock on Prince at all. An iconic entertainer, singer, musician. Miss both those men..
Lucky to see him in 3 bars in Dallas in the early 80s before for he got famous. Last time Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were sitting at the table next to us just having a beer. I heard they collaborated together later. Never paid a cover. Good times.

Is it not madness that through out music history we get blessed now and then with these amazing musical geniuses and they always become super famous and end up dying waaay to young! That is one thing that has always bugged the shit out of me. In every genre of music you have those that stand out and most are "game changers" to music but we never get to keep them long sadly.
SRV is on my guitar Mt Rushmore along with David Gilmour, Eddie Van Halen, and Jimi. But pound for pound SRV is the GOAT! He plugs his guitar directly into your soul. If listening to him doesn’t give you stank face and chills you should go to an ER and make sure your still alive.
