Hi, @dominichoskyns9091, thanks for great in depth reviews on your channel! Looking forward to the full review of 1180 (and 1401 :) ) and comparison to other big foils in Axis range. I am particularly in search of a very light wind wing foiling. I have a BSC 1120 and love it (82kg, wing on lakes). My plan was to get 1310 for this summer (based on your review :) ). Now there are ART PRO 1401 and Spitfire 1180. ;) It gets very hard to make a choice :) Which one would cover the lower wind range (ideally compared to BSC1120, but even between those 3 1310, 1401, 1180) without sacrificing top speed too much, hopefully even improving it (as now, having tried smaller foils I do see the BSC1120 limitations in top speed)?

I would go for the 1401. It works
in light wind (and I‘m talking 8-9kts lightwind, not Maui-lightwind) and is way faster than the 1310. I haven’t tested the 1180 yet but will hopefully soon.

When the 1310 vans out I loved it - for ultra light wind winging it was the best. It wasn’t the fastest or the easiest to manoeuvre but I could pivot turn it and NOTHING got on foil earlier. Then the 1401 came out and that blew me away l only lost the smallest bit of low end lift but the trade off when on foil was so unbelievable that I didn’t want to go back to the 1310. However, now the 1180 is out that has also blown my mind, although not to the point where I no longer want to use the 1401. I think it’s actually a bit easier to get on foil then the 1401 but when on foil it’s totally different. It’s AMAZINGLY manoeverable, a great speed range for a big foil (VERY good low and top end), and super forgiving/easy to use. The 1401 still wins in terms of glide but it’s not easy to turn, which is where the 1180 excels. They both have ridiculously good bottom ends but also have good speed for their size. If you want glide go for the 1401, bit of you want to turn and carve then the 1180 is king. It’s got great glide as well, but nothing beats the 1401 for glide

@@dominichoskyns9091 Thanks for the summary, Dominic! Axis writes that the 1180 has somewhat of a larger camber which would explain that it gets up easier. It would in turn mean that it is a bit slower than the 1401. Have you noticed differences in speed between the two?

@@stkl23 hard to say exactly as I use them in totally different conditions. I’ve not been disappointed with the speed of the 1180

Thanks @dominichoskyns9091 I actually got 1401 and skinny 55 stab. The glide is phenomenal. Love every minute on it for light wind days on the lakes. With a DW board and a 7m wing (both armstrong) it is amazing how little wind is needed to fly. Yet for me coming from BSC 1120 it was a very noticeable jump in terms of how hard this foil is to ride (beginner, just learned jibes both directions on BSC before switching to 1401). For my level of riding: I had to get the longest fuse just to get pitch stability (adv+ short, I started with ultrashort and it was way too unstable for me). Then it took me 4(!) weeks (2-3 sessions a week) to get my jibes in order again. I learned jibes on BSC from scratch faster :) It is crazy how much more precise one has to be with art pro compared to bsc. In the end it is still a fantastic experience and I love the setup no complains at all. Just sharing that 1401 is definitely not a beginner friendly foil :) Yet once you learn it the rewards are fantastic. And the skills acquired are transferable to other foils. After I got comfortable on 1401 I got a chance to ride Art 999 (just swapped the front foil, same fuse, mast, stab) it felt like riding a 2x more stable foil, easy. I am saying art pro probably teaches us next level of foil control, well worth the investment in time. Now looking forward for your review of a new fireball foil from Axis :)

Hi Dominic, great short edit, Thanks again! In addition to Andrejs questions I would also like to know, how you would evaluate the differences between Spitfire 1180 and the PNG 1150, being quite similar in width, for dockstarting especially. I am now on the 1401 for dockstarting and loving it for the speed, loved the 1150 for the start of my pumpjourney and hardly pump it anymore, should sell it really, but have the odd nostalgic feeling for it... ;o)
But should I really get the 1180 now, what are the differences to the 1150 and to the 1401, I would expect the 1180 to be much slower than the 1401 but more manouverable, correct? Which makes it for me quite similar to the 1150, but maybe I am completely wrong? Would love to hear your thoughts on it! Thanks, Philipp.

I still find 1150 the easiest to dock start due to having such high lift at such low speed. I find the 1180 a bit easier to dock start then the 1401, but not by a huge margin. The 1401 has way more glide than the 1180 but speed wise they are very similar. It’s the manoeuvrability that the 1180 wins hands down against the 1401

Hy Dom I ride behind a Pontoon boat on a weak wave and also wing using a 1150. Does the switch to a Spitfire 1180 make sense or would you rather go for something like a 1099 or 1410?

How would you compare the SF 1180 to the 1300png. Is there an overlap between the two foils and does it make the 1300 redundant due to it's increased manoeuvrability and good low end capacity?

When the 1401 came it blew my mind for light wind winging and flat water pumping. The glide is the best I’ve experienced. For flat water pumping it’s quite result the best foil I’ve ever used, by a long way. For light wind downwinding there’s nothing better. However, now the 1180 is out that has also blown my mind, although not to the point where I no longer want to use the 1401. I think it’s actually a bit easier to get on foil then the 1401 but when on foil it’s totally different. I ride the HPS 1050 and I have a 1201 and 1150 do you think the 1180 Spitfire is all around better than the ART 1201 or PNG1150 or just more fun and turns? Who is the 1180 Spitfire just as fast as the 1201?

Norfolk Broads?? I need to see that full review, can't seem to let go of the HPS 1050 its my light wind foil @86kg for wing foiling and used it in much higher wind conditions the skinny stab has given it a new lease of life. Understand the Spitfires are surf carve orientated? That zoom wow!!😮

    Hi Dominic!
Thank you very much for your Axis reviews - they helped me to choose my first PNG foil.
Would you mind if I translate some of your large Axis foils reviews into russian and publish on my channel?
This will help greatly to grow local river/lake/downind foiling community.

      That’s the smallest of the Foil Drive/Axis collaboration range of prone downwind boards. It’s 5’ x 19” x 50ltrs.
      The other two sizes will be 5’4” x 19.5 x 60ltrs and 5’8” x 20” x 70ltrs.
They are sooooo easy to get on foil and feel much shorter due to the mast tracks being further up the board. Great balance, designed for prone downwinding but they pump and surf really well
