I am so glad to hear this. I justified purchasing my Foil Drive because where I live wind is unreliable, I don't own a boat, have access to a pier, or have surf nearby, but I do have a beautiful lake only few blocks away. I was looking for a way to get myself on the water daily if possible. Foil Drive allowed this to happen, but I felt guilty thinking that I was somehow cheating, not doing time flailing like others I talk to. This video confirms what I have felt, that this is without a doubt the best way to speed up one's foiling journey. Thank's for sharing.
I did not have much interest in dock starts or beach starts. Playing with the Foil Drive made me want to pump better to squeeze out a long ride on the smallest most choppy swell. Now I find myself shutting off the engine and pushing how far I can flat water pump. My wings are gathering dust like everyone else's in Florida during the summer. My boards stay wet. I am riding two or three times each day thanks to the Foil Drive. I probably would not have gambled on the purchase had I not seen what you were doing. Thanks for leading the way!🤙
After a couple of days I can understand Dominics point from my perspective. Starting 5 years ago with dockstarting (after foil kiting, windsurfing, winging etc...) it is now a real passion, gliding with low effort and flying (not endlessly!). But to come to this point was really tough. Endless hours of frustration and hapiness and.....time, lots of time for exercise. With 56 years of age my talent is only to be patient and focused, thats all. After 30 sec pumping I loose the energy to fly relaxed. But these 30 sec. are wonderful and very special. At this point i guess, that the foil drive could help me to rest between the pumpsections and maybe connect them one day... for more distance from the dock :-)) Secondly it will be the only opportunity to transfer my pumpskills to the ocean without winging. I don't want to spent again hours and hours of practice DW paddling (it looks and feels simply too gorilla like), especially not in bumpy conditions. 5 years ago it was definitely worth it, but now it would be great getting some support to keep some energy to enjoy the nature ...
Alex, I have a huge amount of respect for anyone who is able to change their opinion based on someone else’s opinion. It’s so easy to dismiss what we don’t want to hear from others as being wrong for no reason other than it’s not what we do ourselves, so thank you for being so open minded. I actually feel so strongly about the point you made before about mechanised foilers needing to respect the line up that I’ll be working on some videos to help get that message across. I’m stoked that you think there could be a place for foildrive within your foiling. It’s benefits are too great to fully comprehend until you try them for yourself. Looking forward to hearing about your foildrive journey 😍😎💯
I don’t know. I get it - it must be very fun. So is the jet ski, power boat :) There is something magical in surfing/kiting/wingfoiling/windsurfing/dockstarting related to using pure nature, wind, waves, legs… no motors, batteries, ECUs, chargers, fuel… only the pride of being “good enough” to use the nature forces :) maybe it is just me being nostalgic
Yup, I get what you're saying - I can wingfoil and sup foil without foildrive, but i choose to use foildrive because I have way more fun with it than without it. Set your pride aside for a minute and answer this honestly - would you prefer 1 minute of being on foil each time the 'pure' way or 10-30 minutes of being on foil each time with foildrive? Would you prefer being on foil a total of 10 minutes in an hour session the pure way, or 50 minutes on foil in an hour session with foildrive? It's for these stats that I have put my pride aside and allowed myself to just enjoy nature with a small amount of mechanical 'assist' to get on foil that really doesn't interfere with the pure foiling experience when on foil. Check out Sky Rama's latest Insta posts - even pro foilers like him are realising that by using foildrive they can be on foil for 50 minutes rather than 10 minutes when the conditions are so small that they would just be floating in the water waiting to get on foil for 50 minutes without foildrive. If pride gets in the way of having fun - I say fuck pride!🤣
I can see your angle and I am not saying I will never use a foildrive. Probably today I am not in a search of “productivity” and get enough hours on foil without the assist. But it has been a really windy season 😅
@@mindebrolis9582 bear in mind I’m mostly referring to using FOILDRIVE as an alternative to dock starting in this video. Hey Dom. . . great explanation about the 'accelerator' effects of eAssist. I'm curious. . . what size battery you using there? Do you know it's configuration? 10S3p?
Hi Dominic, brilliantly inspiring and thorough videos... thanks so much! I'm 82kg, 47yrs old and not super fit. Done a bunch of board sports & surfing but just beginning my foiling journey. Would love to ride tiny swell, pump and eventually downwind & found a used foil drive (22.2v original model (not assist plus)) & wondering if you thought worthwhile as a learning tool. It's around £2500 cheaper than a new assist plus. Any guidance would be massively appreciated. Thanks again.
I was the first person to buy a foil drive assist and I loved it!!!! It’s perfectly fine to use with the right equipment, that being a big high volume SUP or wing board. The assist plus and obviously the gen 2 have more power so are more suited to using with small boards and high performance foils, but the price of an original assist is so good that it’s a great way to get a foil assist as a learning tool in the early stages

Your video is a gamechanger for me Dominic. I'm comfortable on eFoils and behind a boat. I want to learn pumping in the lake and river near my house. What size board, wing and mast height would you recommend to use with FD for someone who has never pumped. I weigh 78 Kg. Thanks a ton!!
I’d recommend a board about 4’8” - 4’ 10” to begin with and around 40-50ltrs. This will make it much easier to learn the technique. How quickly you can move down to a smaller board is different for everyone - around 4’ and 25-30ltrs is possible, but to start with a board that small will make the learning process very difficult. If you don’t want to buy and sell boards throughout the learning process then a 4’6” x 35-40 ltr board is the best compromise. I would thoroughly recommend the Axis wake thief dock starting combo (on the axis website) with the PNG 1150 front foil and either the progressive 450 or the speed 460 rear stabs and either the standard fuse. Most people use either a75cm or an 82cm mast. This is entirely down to personal preference - wake thief prefers 75, in prefer 82, everyone is different. Personally I think82 it’s best for FOILDRIVE. This is by far the best setup to learn and progress your flat water pumping journey and it is excellent for wake thieving because for such a good pumping foul it is also quite playful. Do not get a huge foil to begin with. They are actually quite technical to pump and are very difficult to turn when on a wake.
Hey Dominic thanks again for showing me how to pump on ha wings, your videos made the difference, just an idea can u .are a video on advance dockstarts with smaller foils, like using short fuses and shiming and a dock u can run fast off of, I'm on my way to dockstarting on 1000cm foils thanks to u🎉🎉🎉🎉
Hiya. Like I said in this video, the reason I use FOILDRIVE is because I find it too difficult to dock start small foils. If you can manage it then that’s great, i congratulate you, but I’m sticking with foildrive for all the reasons I’ve listed 😂
It looks really good. Unfortunately battery assist is not allowed on the Swiss lakes……. If you put the propeller down the mast to the foil how does it ride? (Stealth mode)
If you have the project Cedrus mast(where the cable is integrated inside the mast) then it’s very good as an efoil. If you have to tape the cable to the trailing edge of the mast then it is still possible to efoil but there is a lot of drag compared to the Cedrus mast

@@asquared01 Hi Mate, I'm planning to swap my existing prone board when I'm back in Australia which is around 40L and I will experiment with that but probably mid board location.
I’ve experimented by putting the motor at lots of different heights on the mast. I started with it 25cm from the board, and over time I have found that I now prefer it around 20 or even 18cm from the board, but any closer to the board than that and I don’t like it as it makes it too difficult to efoil
@@skobichevskii some of those video clips are from when I was experimenting with motor height so yes, in some of them i had the motor much lower than 20cm. Now I usually have the middle of the motor around 18-20cm from the bottom of the board

Oops, sorry about your credit card 😜 With the 910 i usually use my Axis 4’6” x 37ltr prone board. I can use smaller boards with it (4’ x 32ltrs and 4’4’ x 29ltrs) but the battery drains so much faster with those smaller boards as they need so much more power to get up on with them. When choosing a board to use with foildrive you need to consider your weight. I’m 82kg so for me the sweet spot seems to be around 35ltrs. When I get to 40ltrs I notice the bulk, and when I have much less than 35 ltrs it makes it harder to get on foil. Choosing the right size and volume board is a balance between performance and battery life, and a lot depends on your weight and skill level.

Kind of - when you release the trigger (which stops the thrust from the motor) you have to adjust your bodyweight back a bit or the board will nose-dive. Similarly, when you pull the trigger to start the motor, you have to shift your bodyweight forwards slightly to compensate for the extra lift produced from the thrust of the motor. It sounds complicated but it doesn't take long to get used to this, and before long you do it without thinking like all of your movements in foiling
This is the same scenario of mountain bikes vs e-mtbs. IMO, both are great, they and each has its advantages and drawbacks. Hey, if money was no object, everyone would own one. So all good.
Great video. Would love to see a more detailed description and demonstration of how you are Ollie up from efoil to pumping on FD Also I know you are now working for FD. Idea for a future video. A lot of your new FD users are Lift efoil riders transitioning over to FD or prone. If you were able to make a video covering the lift wings and setups as you’ve done with other foil brands I guarantee it would be a video that helps a lot of future and current FD riders
Hey Paul. I’ve just made another video which I’d exactly what you’ve asked for - showing in detail how to ollie up from efoil to pumping, and also the transition from pumping back to efoil. It will be released this week as an official FOILDRIVE video on the FOILDRIVE RUclips channel. We will try to get some of those Lift foils to review but to be perfectly honest the technique is the same no matter what brand of foil you use. In the past I have used the HA 250, 200 & 170 and although that was before I got FoilDrive, I see no reason to think they behave differently to any other foils. I suspect that the 170 would be the size that I could just get onto foil with a prone board on flat water, and any smaller would need a push from a wave to get on foil.
@@dominichoskyns9091 Really looking forward to seeing the new video. Btw your videos are the SOLE reason I purchased FD and I am very happy with the product. Thank you. MY comment on the Lift wings was not in relation to ollie up/down, but more of a review of what works, doesn't work, and favorite set up kind of thing. Only reason I suggested is it stands to reason that you have a lot of people with Lift gear that are now FD customers. Probably moreso than any other brand. 150 HAX is the one I am most curios about.
I am an Axis gears rider thanks to you & Wake Thief. Now, it seems that I will get into E-foil some time in the near future thanks to you 😂😂 Question from 73 kg guy, what will be the ideal board volume & front foil size for E-foiling? 1. Would 112 liter board (Reedin) be too big? If this is the case, how about 95 liter board (Froth) 2. Is it good to start E foiling with PNG 1150 & 460 set up? BSC1120 with 500 FR will be too big?
The 112 ltrs board would work but I think at your weight the 95 ltr board would be better for you. The 1150 is definitely the biggest foil you’ll need. The 1120 will be too big and slow
It’s not a low value item that’s for sure, but despite that it seems to be selling well. In fact everyone who buying one ends up realising that even despite its high cost, because it lets you get so much time on foil in any conditions, it’s probably one of the best value products you can buy. Unfortunately Europe has high taxes and there’s nothing Foildrive can do about that.
cheating or not, for balance-challenged kooks like me, its the only opportunity to learn foiling. If its a choice between cheating to learn to foil/pump etc and watching a bunch of nice videos of others foiling, I will take cheating all the time.

If you were able to make a video covering the lift wings and setups as you’ve done with other foil brands I guarantee it would be a video that helps a lot of future and current FD riders
If you did this video the wings that would make the most sense would be 200HA, 170HA, 150HAX, 150 surf, 120 HA
The regulations in France are becoming pretty tough and places where you can efoil are becoming rarer
Thanks for the warning. I'll have to look into the regs
I am an Axis gears rider thanks to you & Wake Thief. Now, it seems that I will get into E-foil some time in the near future thanks to you 😂😂
Question from 73 kg guy, what will be the ideal board volume & front foil size for E-foiling?
1. Would 112 liter board (Reedin) be too big? If this is the case, how about 95 liter board (Froth)
The price with import taxes to Europe is simply ridiculous!
@@dominichoskyns9091 For that price I can get a wonderful used LIFT
How many ladders can you get for one foildrive? In my country Sweden 41

cheating or not, for balance-challenged kooks like me, its the only opportunity to learn foiling. If its a choice between cheating to learn to foil/pump etc and watching a bunch of nice videos of others foiling, I will take cheating all the time.
I think foil riding looks amazing
