- RX 6800XT & 6900XT Power Supply Requirements - Minimum PSU Wattage
AMD's Big Navi RX 6800XT and 6900XT graphics cards are both rated for a 300W TBP, however on AMD's website the 6900XT recommends an 850W PSU, and the 6800XT recommends a 750W PSU. This may lead many people to ask the question, Can my 650W PSU sneak by, and if not, and how much do I really need.

Hey, is a 600w Tier B PSU from the PSU tier list enough, I have the Ryzen 5 3600x, 32GB RAM, M.2 SSD, HDD, B450M and will probably get a 6800, I can't get a return on it now.
Looking for a 6900xt but my 870W psu will secure me :)
@@nark4837 would get >=700 W
@@maxkraft2709 As I said, I can't. And why would you recommend bigger than 700W, its a 6800, it draws 50 watts less, its not like the whole system combined draws way more than his first test either.
@@nark4837 It has ALREADY been proven that the power draw from a CPU, mobo, HDDs and 300-350w GPU, fans is no greater than 550w. They recommend 750w because it is good to have headroom.
So the magic number is 600w PSU. Anyone with a 600w PSU or greater has MORE than enough power 👍

Right in time. I bought an 850 for my new build
Same here, It felt a bit overkill at the time but I wanted to play it safe for whatever I end up getting.
If the 6800XT model you choose has 2 x 8-pin connectors, it can only pull 375 watts normally from your power supply, if you get a 3 x 8-pin, your card can pull 525 watts, which is mostly unnecessary and extremely much. So be aware. If youre a normal user and want to give a maximum of +20% power to your card, take the 2 x 8-pin card, if you want to overclock like crazy, take the 3 x 8-pin, but it will run power hungry as hell.
What about triple 6+2 pins? Is 300w enough for the 6900xt?
I'm on my first build and find channels like this one, very helpful.
Glad it helped!
That first rig you mentioned was basically identical to mine, LOL
Plan on getting a 6800 XT as soon as possible, running a 5700 XT right now.

I have a question.
Do you think 700 Watts is also enough
Yeah, really relieved
@@nielsdetand1431 ok thank you very much

@@reto_englert ooh sorry, my comment was not an answer to your question. It really depends on how much power your system draws. But 700 watts should be enough as long as you don't overclock.
But you also need to consider the QUALITY of the power supply. Get the highest rated power supply you can afford. If you don't plan on stressing out the system, you should be fine with a high end 650W power supply. If you plan to stress out your rig on a regular basis, go with a higher wattage but don't neglect the quality issue either.

@@decayinoblivion666 ahahahaha!
Yes.
It may depend on the efficiency rating of the PSU. I have a 3900X and 1080ti (with a 330W modded vBIOS) and a custom loop running on a 650W Titanium rated psu without issues. If it was bronze/gold, I would go for 750-850W, but the minimum recommended PSU usually covered even the non-80+ rated PSUs
80 gold platinum. no. its overclocking that pushes it. 850 if o.c. cpu and gpu etc
It is not rating it is power efficiency so if u got a 650w bronz it ll still handle, but it ll pull more power from the wall and most likely it ll get hotter, which means louder overall operation, btw between a gold and a titanium psu the difference is 3-4% depends on load, and a titanium psu sometimes cost double of the gold one even from the same vendor.
Still a bit on the fence about getting a red or green card, although I could take advantage of SAM with a RED card, it all depends on the price on the 3060ti(in CAD) and it's AMD competition. But I am happy I opted to get an open box TX750M.
My 3700x system claims 565W needed with a stock 6800xt. I think 650W users will be fine as long as there's no crazy OC done.
Thanks man, that helped me :)
650w will be more then enough.. its simple maths people.

I was really worried about using my 750 watt psi I bought before I picked up my 5900x and 6900uxt that is overclocked out of box. I have never seen my wall outlet draw exceed 450 watts. I have 5 hard drives and 4 16 gig sticks.
Edit wanted to update - that was when I was underclocking. Overclocked I am hitting 550 easy.
Apparently? Hello comment owner
bought a corsair 850w power supply while building my new pc because the 750w power supplies were hard to find and the 850w was only $135 at the time, basically the same price as many other 750w power supplies.
Important to know here is that some power supplies do not have enough 8pin connectors. The 6900xt needs 2x8pins to function properly amd the 8pin should not be from a split cable. That's important to know to avoid surprises. I personally have a 730W psu, running a 6900xt fully overclocked just fine. Got 2x16gb ram at 3200mhz 2x 980 evo ssd, 960 evo ssd and a i9-9900k with watercooler aoi pump.
What is the name of your power supply?
Don't forget 75w of that figure is supplied by the PCI slot.
Corsair 750i is my CPU and i went through PSU calculator for R7 5800x with RX 6800, and it recomeded 500w PSU, so "YES" i'm good 😎
I have a good quality 600W ITX PSU running a B550 3600 CPU setup, so I hope its enough. I currently run a 1080ti water-cooled with decent overclock, no issues from what I can see.
I should measure it at the wall at some point (I have a meter). Might look out for a 750W ITX PSU in the future.
Yea you could always undervolt a bit on a SFF system to generate less power and heat.
if i can eventually afford the 6800xt gonna try it with a 700 watt gold plus.. and an 8600k oc'd to 90watt~
I have a 3600x and planning to get a 6800xt, my seasonic 650w gold should be gucci
Running a asus tuf oc 6900xt with a 650w-seasonic prime tx, core i9-9900kf, 32gigs of ram at 3600, all good. Playing Cod Cold war around 190-210fps at 1440, ray tracing off, all maxed out.
Still running well?
I mean, I ran a 2080ti Zotac Amp Extreme on my SF600 PSU, which is about the same TBP as the 6800xt.
Bought an RM850X PSU and a 5700XT in 2020 and they worked perfectly. 2 years later I upgraded to a XFX RX6900XT. Did my research and the Corsair RM850X was plenty for this card. Well from the day I installed, I had a weird issue where the system wouldn't post on the 1st power up after a cold boot. I'd have to start up the PC 2 or 3 times before it would finally post. Did everything I could think of like updating BIOS, checking cables, replacing cables. I knew it wasn't a driver issue because once it posted, everything was fine and drivers don't load until Windows loads. And I knew it wasn't an issue with the motherboard because I could stick the old 5700XT back in and it booted every time. I have been living with this issue for 2 years. So, I have to power it on a few times to get it to post, big deal. Then the RX6900XT failed. Luckily it was still under warranty and I RMA'd it. Got a brand new RX6900XT and it still does the same damn thing! Today I finally saw a RUclips video stating the 6900 draws a lot of power and needs two PCIe 8pin connectors coming off the PSU. Well I've been using the splitter cable. You know what I'm talking about? The single cable that plugs into one PCIe output on the PSU that branches off to 2x 8pin connectors that go to the graphics card. I really think that may be the issue because I know this PSU is good and is more than sufficient for the 6900 and I know my motherboard is good too, so this makes sense to me! I'm going to add a second PCIe 8pin tonight and see if that solves the issue. Has anyone else experienced this? And is anyone using two separate PCIe cables for your GPU?
Eventually we’ll be limited by our wall outlets 😂😂
Have a 5800x3d + 6950xt. My old psu, straight power 11 650w was not enough, at full load system crashed totally, need 5-10 times tries to start up... now i have an straight power 12 1000w psu. My full System Consumption are 550w, but the Peak of 800w was to high! You need to know that...
Hey, so something I noticed. Idk about you but I think you'd find it pretty interesting. Ampere doesn't scale well under 4k resolution, as to where RDNA2 scales insanely well. The average consumer is at 1080p, with people moving to 1440p. At 1440p if you compare the rtx3080 scores compared to the rx6800xt, but against the rx6800, the rx6800 is quite even with the rtx3080 for $120 cheaper. Same for the rx6800xt compared to the rtx3090...pretty even, but $850 cheaper. That's pretty huge that you can get even with the 3090 for $850 cheaper and still cheaper than the rtx3080 for the average consumer. The sprinkle of 4k gamers definitely get a bit more value from the rtx3080 with its DLSS but at 1440p I wouldnt pay $120 or $850 for such a feature.
It also depends a lot on which PSU you got: How efficient it is. A Gold or Platinum PSU consumes a fair bit less power than a Plus or Bronze one, especially at higher loads. I am pretty sure that a 650 Watt Gold or Platinum will do the trick for most people, even when you overclock.
.
on stream she said you can run a 6900xt on a 650w psu. obviously it also comes down to what cpu do you have. a 5ghz 9900k taking 200+ watts wont work
My 5GHz 9900K drew over 250W I think XD
@@bladeclanhalo3 True!
@@GraphicallyChallenged Yeah, with a CPU of that type then you need some extra juice :)
I have a 700w thermal take psu and I was planning to get an rx 6800 non xt so if 650 is fine for the xt then I think I should be fine and I don't think I'm gonna overclock but might in the future
I managed to get a FTW3 3090... Should I keep that or my XC3 Ultra 3090? I plan on water cooling so higher power limit might actually help. I am quite conflicted and would love for you to help me out with this lol. Money isn't a factor here. Not too worried about spending more it just comes down to is there a huge difference between the two cards. I am thinking I will stick with the XC3 Ultra because EK already has a block for it but I dont mind waiting for something to come for the ftw3 if the power limit will actually wind up helping.
Depends on Resolution 1080p will be okay, 1440p just , 4k RES dont try it. If you think your having issues limit the frames to and use 60herts refresh instead.
Feel great about my 850W psu now
You should do more head twists with heavier objects :)
I bought a 750 watt corsair gold last year!
I'm using a EVGA G2 650 gold psu with a EVGA FTW3 GTX1080 TI with a 65watt cpu.
On my old sim rig I ran a 125W CPU (Phenom II 1090T) and a 180W GPU (R9 270X) both overclocked on a no name 250W SFX PSU for about 8 years. I'm therefore hoping my 650W Corsair PSU can handle a 65W CPU (Ryzen 5 3600) and a 6800XT. I will be most disappointed if not!
Did it work? Also was your psu bronze or gold?
That PSU looks heavy!
im upgrading my rig to 4 8gb sticks of ram a 5800x and a 6800xt so hopefully my 750watt psu can handle it
I use 750W be quiet platinum for 6900 XT + 5600X. It is fine
I run a 4790k with plenty of fans HDDs and SDDs. Also dual RX 580s and use a 1200w PSU.
My last build with a 9900K OC at 5.4GHz and 2080 TI @ 2150MHz, my total system power draw was just under 500W.
Let's say;
5900X will pull upto 200W OC
6900XT 350W OC (Will be limited to the maximum 375W from the 2x8pin (300w) plus 75W from the PCIe slot.
Plus allow 100W for RAM, NVMe's, SSD's, Fans, and prepherials connected to the PC.
That will be 650W, but then you will need to allow for the PSU efficency, so let's say 90%, so you will need to add another 65W to the above for the draw from the wall. So 715W is the min you will need for overclocking.
Oh thank god, got 750W PSU before nex gen was announced and thought I was toast. 5900x and 6900xt build.
no way ram nvme and ssds use 100 watts.. max 10 lol
@@Chrontard Maybe you need to read the rest of my original post, as I didn't say just those few components...
So, like myself adding those 7 fans, keyboard, mouse, VR HMD, Game pad, RGB light strips, Waterpump etc into that 100W as a worst case scenario, and you are pretty close to my figure.
850Watt Super Flower Gold rated is not enough juice for the 6900XT overclocked. It must be pulling a lot of wattage since Days Gone crashes my computer when it reaches 250+FPS but limiting it to around 180FPS seems to work perfectly. I've had to upgrade power supplies 3 times now. Should've just started out with a 1000watt gold rated instead of buying them all to find out that an upgrade is needed to keep the power hungry 6900XT happy.
Do you think the 6800XT would be fine with that supply (3700X, 2x16GB Ram, 2x NVME, 1x Sata SSD, 1x HDD, Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler, and five case fans)? I'm also wondering if a slightly underclocked 6900XT would use less power than a 6800XT, if it were set to match performance of the 6800XT. Mostly because the pricing is no different here lately.
if I dont run games or in general not overclock the rx6900xt card can i be safe using 750w? is 850w recommended only if you have any intentions to overclock the pc one day?
i have R5 5600 and rx6650xt
had a 650w bronze psu, theorically i should have been good with that but my system kept restarting everytime i got some wattage peak, so in rage i bought a 850w gold psu and hoping it will fix the problem (previously i thought it was the ram so i changed them and nothing changed, same problem, then the MOBO and same thing, so i guess is the psu)
So the recommended calculator recommends a PSU with 550 watts, as I plan on using the 5600X with an AiO and the 6800XT. Would a platinum rated PSU with 600 watts like the SF600 be enough then?
Lol I have a system pretty close to this. MSI B450A-PRO, R5 3600x, and Sapphire Nitro+ 6800 on the way. Just ordered Seasonic 750w.
Really depends on the quality of the PSU and how much the 12 volt lane can handle.. In Europe your best bet is likely the EVGA G3 (manufactured by supper flower, same as there own ledex 2).. Its a gold 80+ standard but on European mains power runs at over 90+ efficiency.. Plenty of juice on single lane 12 volt lane. Industry leading jitter and ripple suppression, runs closer to a platinum standard.. Stay away from this power supply though in the US, its performance will go to pot, as you see if you read a review from the US.. Google around though and you should find out how god like this supply is in Europe for the money 💷 💶 ✌️
I calculated i need 520W recommended PSU at 100% CPU utillization for R5 5600x. 6800xt, 2x8 Gb ddr4, 1x M.2 NVMe SSD, 1x Sata SSD, 1x HDD 7,2K , 1x LCD 32 QHD with all peripherals i have. I think i have 550W PSU, so it should do the trick. What do you think guys?
I bought 850watt platinum PSU several years ago thinking that I wasted so much money for something that won't affect performance. Look where we at now with all of these power sucking components lol.
So I've got a Ryzen 3900x, 32 GBs of ram, and currently a 5700 XT. If I get a 6800 XT when they are actually around, nothing will explode then right? I've heard conflicting things about my setup in particular.
I actually have a 1000w power supply for my 3950x and 2080ti. It runs them find I've overclocked my 3950x to 4.3Ghz if I upgraded I would be fine with what I have in power with 1000w.
I put an 850 watt power supply into my build with the expectation of a 3080 or similar card. I usually take my power requirement and multiply it by 1.5 for my power supply just to account for system expansion over the years and I’d rather run a much larger psu down low then a smaller one up high.
I have a gold rated 750W, so unsure if to risk this or not. Not OC or plenty ofther things, nvme disk and i5 11400.
i finally got something to say

I have a Seasonic Prime Titanium 750W with a R9 3900x, and am planning to upgrade to R9 5900x and RX 6800XT. Will it work?
My System a Ryzen 9 3900x, Two DDR4 32GB of RAM, RTX 2070 super, 8 120mm RGB fans and two led light strips, one 2TB NVME m.2 drive and one IDE 3TB and 3 5TB external SSD Drives and external blue ray Reader/Writer. My Power Supply is a EVGA Supernova1000G2 80 plus gold rating, specs 12v - 83.3 amps max, 5v - 24 amps max, and 3.3 volts - 24 amps max and power supply calculations giving 5v - 11.8A draw, 16.1 A draw, and 12v - 35.7A draw and if I was to get a hold of a RTX3080 TI the new Power supply Calculation amp draw would be 5v - 12.7A draw, 16.1 A draw, and 12v - 46.5A so I would still be using around 50 percent utilization of my Power Supplies Max Power Rating of 1000 wats plus.
Can I use a 550 PS with an RX 6800 ?
I got a ryzen 5 3600x, 32 gbs of 3600 mhz ram, aio cooler 240 mm, and 9 fans. i think i should be fine for a 6800xt if the total board power is 300
Considering you can safely run a 3080 fe with a 650w im guessing you should be fine
Is the B700H 700 W power supply enough for the Powercolor rx6800 16gb graphics card?
iv gone for 1kw, 14 120mm fans waterloop probably a 5900x and 6900xt 4x8gb ram all oc
We've already gone over this with the 3000 series nVidia GPUs; which draw even more power than the 6800xt and 6900xt (300w TDP). Full system power draw with a 3080 (320w tdp) was no more than 600 watts with, iirc, a 10900k. GUYS, you don't need to overspend on a 1000w psu. 750w has been proven to be PLENTY for even the less efficient 3080. As long as you don't have something like threadripper w/ custom water cooling, tons of HDDs/SSDs (emphasis on the HDDs), you'll be fine with 650w for a 6800 and 750w for 6800xt/6900xt.
I have a ryzen 7 3700X and a 240mm AIO water cooler, would 750watt be enough for a 6900xt running at full when gaming, assuming I haven't overclocked at all?
How About 700W for Rx 6800 XT

Should I be alright with my 600W PSU with a Ryzen 5 3600 and an RX6800?
The thing is you never want that your power supply use all your potential. You always want have headroom for your power supply I recommend between 25-40% headroom. Let's say if your PC component use 600w you definitely want 800w power supply you CAN use 650w power supply BUT over time if your power supply always work full load it will blow up and maybe even damage your components. That's a mistake most people do and I don't recommend doing that. Don't calculate your power usage and buying a power supply what barely fits in your power usage. You can calculate your power usage but then buy a power supply what goes over your calculations let's say u calculate 700w PC component usage don't buy a 750w power supply buy a 850w or 1000w let's say your power usage is 500w don't buy a 550w power supply buy a 650w power supply.
And how do we calculate exactly?
Like 300 for gpu 65 for cpu and? What else? I'm new to pcs so sorry
@@xbersserkerx5902 What CPU use 65 watt??? In what world do u live or are u still using dual core? Don't trust TDP numbers my Ryzen 7 3700X has a TDP of 65w SPOILER it draws more then 65w it draws between 30 and 50 watts while doing NOTHING idle in Windows and if u play AAA games what actually today can use 6-8 cores like the new Watchdogs Legion u will find a CPU watt usage of around 80-120 watts from a 65w TDP chip. TDP is not equal to power usage you can watch on RUclips what TDP actually means. Also it depends some CPU's like a i9 10900k can use over 300w so u need to be careful when u say every CPU use the same amount of energy. Also AMD said RX 6800XT and 6900XT using 300w but how I said what they say and what is the real power consumption are 2 different things. Nvidia also claims 350w for the RTX 3090 spoiler it use between 400-500 watts depending on the GPU the Nvidia model or a 3rd party board partner custom model with already made factory overcloc and they mostly rise the power. I saw benchmarks where a 3090 overclocked use over 500w so 350w is BS even if it isn't overclocked even if the 3090 is running stock stock 100% GPU usage using all cores in productivity benchmarks will use around 380-450w. When it comes to calculate power usage we CAN'T do this right now we must wait on user benchmarks where people actually test the power usage of each card separately.
@@strohhuttv8848 aaah. I really thought an amd r5 3600 uses 65 watts. Hahaha silly me. Thanks for the clarification, mate.
@@strohhuttv8848 what else uses power aside from a gpu and cpu
I5 10400f with 6700xt, crucial ballistix 16gb ram rgb ddr4 3200mhz ,h510m-k 500gb nvme 1tb hdd case with 5 fans with stock cpu cooler + rgb led strip is 600w psu enough? My estimated was around 434
hear me out is my cx550 enough? dont have a plan to buy one anytime soon bought this one 2 weeks ago
Tbh would pair my 3600x/x570/650w system with the 6800/3070
T2 1600w: I don't even feel it.
Regarding prices, is it weird that the same brand 1000W power supply is $100 MORE expensive now than it was 8 years ago?
Im hunting for a new PSU for my next AMD build and used the same site + a few manufactures site which all suggested 750w and I just bought a 850w.
Yesterday, I also watched a sponsored video by BeQuiet and used their PSU calc and for the exact same build, BeQuiet recommended a 1200w 450Euro PSU. Clearly upmarketing!
With 850 watts all my little problems. Went away!
i have corsair 850W 80+ gold. i'm good (hopefully)
Is Evga G3 750w good for the rx 6900xt tuf? the processor is an i7 8700k at 4.7ghz
Soooo does the rx 6800 xt actually use 750watt and do any other parts use any power
I’m building my first pc
I just bought a 6900xt and installed it with my oc 6700k plus heap of fans etc and my Asus 650w gold might be struggling. I get periodic boot loops and sometimes won't boot unless I only have 1 ram stick in it. I'm thinking the PSU might not be up to it
5800x + 6800xt ftw :)
I have ryzen 5 3600,16gb ram ddr4 2666hz and 650w power supply and currently 6600xt
I only use it for gming im considering 6800xt red dragon only for gaming, idk if i need more watts on psu
Damnit I thought I was safe with my 650 watt. Now I need to buy another =(. Fine recommend me some for black friday
Depending on your system it might work, but its definitely not ideal and I don't recommend.
Can I pass by using a CX550?
I am planning to buy an R5 3600 and an RX 6800XT (gonna run at stock settings)
Is the CX550 enough?
*fingers crossed*
I have a 3600x + TX650 (Corsair), I'm still anxious af T_T
Got a brand new system with a 5900x and 6900xt with a bequite straight power 11 750W and it does NOT work, random crashes. Googling about it since a few days, and it seems lots of other people having the same issue, and it seems the 6900xt can have peaks to around 800W which will crash a lot of power supplies.
