    Thanks for the video. I'm running a Ryzen 5600x, OC 6800XT, 1 SSD, 2x8 ram, 3 screens, * a rog strix 650 gold PSU. Never had an issue here, even at ultra/high settings. Based on some tests I've run, im pulling around 500-550. Still around 100 less than the 650 cap.

    I have a PowerColor 6900XT OC. It is recommended to use 900w or above. The card also has three 8 pin PCIE connections . I had an 850W PSU semi modular and had to change out for a modular PSU at 1000w as I didn't have three 8 pin pcie connections. Using two cables (With the second cable daisy chained to use 2 slots on the GPU) didn't give the GPU enough power and the fans wouldn't spin under load.

    really interesting video, i was wondering if i needed to upgrade my psu but you fully solved my question, you've got my sub

  • @stephen5998
    @stephen5998 3 года назад +1

    You've earned a sub my good man! My build is an Asrock z490 Phantom Gaming itx/tb3, i5-10600k (stock), 32GB ram (XMP enabled), 6900xt (Sapphire FE version - stock) with a Corsair SF750 Platinum. I've been running Cyberpunk 2077 at 4k max settings for several hours over 2 weeks and haven't had any issues. For my own calculations, assuming maximum load for all components (worst case scenario), I am at roughly 69% capacity of my PSU. I also included CPU overclock using boost clock - 85%, and GPU overclock only - 75%. I feel a bit more comfortable with my psu after watching your video. Thank you.
    EDIT: For others here, the GPU OC only is not beneficial since the i5 10600k will only bottleneck it more - it would make more sense to OC the CPU. Also, keep in mind that the scenario above is worst case, so the actual used PSU capacity will be slightly lower. Also, improving air flow or cooling in your system will reduce power consumption, since the by product of power used in components is heat. So many factors and variables - you'll go crazy trying to figure it all out - I'm an electrical/power engineer, i.e., approximate it and you'll be ok.

    I got a high quality name brand power supply this black friday at a very good deal, a 850w gold, with my new pc build. Even with my 6800 xt I would have no problem getting a 650 w PS even with all my fans and accessories. I do not think he went over the s/s of a low power supply, which is random program crashes, unexpected shutdown & restart, system freezes, video errors, complete shutdown, and the blue screen. Also running a suite of tests after your new build, lets you stretch its legs and determine what your power needs will be. Knowing these symptoms, will help prevent you from causing harm to your components.

    i got a 850 watt power supply its titanium, if you guys have 650 or 750 just undervolt your 6000 series card you will keep performance or if not increase performance, i got 2550 mhz at 1070 mv playing every game no problem even brought the temps down a ton compared to stock. and memory is at 2100 MHz with fast timings and highest i saw was 270 watts pulled while gaming. just keep power limit at 0 or if not go lower -10 or so and still will get great perfomance and temps will be happy. so you can run a 6900 xt on a 650 watt power supply if you undervolt . should hold you over till you can upgrade your power supply

    iam looking for answer here: even tho current gpus have lets say a tdp of 250, many people recommand higher psus.. currently, iam running a 650w psu, with a 8700f and a gtx 1080 under full load, the system takes 385 watts. upgrading from a 180watt to a 250 watt card should be cool then? well people say no, because these 250 watt cards, can have spikes of 450 watts, shutting down the pc.. the question is: if i undervolt a 250watt card to 190 watt, will that power spike still be a problem? i mean, it cant be "ok, thats the way it is nowadays, live with it" to get psu with 300 watt headroom, just because cards with 250 watt tdp, can draw 450 watts for a fraction of a second. thats eighter bad or lazy design or a new normal, that should be shunned instead of just taken as normal. still think its crazy where modern cpus and gpu are with power consumption. i went from a gtx 680 to a gtx 1080. the 1080, needs 15 watts less then the 680 but has double the peformance. to get double the performance, i now have to add 70 watts. this might not bother when you have cheap electricity where you live or you dont game that much. but iam paying 39 cents per kwh nowadays with ~40 hours of gaming a week

    Why is adding another screen relevant? I'd guess that a HDMI feed uses a completely negligible amount of power
    Edit: I guess it would increase GPU load, but if were calculating these power draw values assuming that every component is under load at 100% utilization I still dont really see how that's relevant. Am I missing something?

    • @heygeek3816
      @heygeek3816  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching! I would say you are probably okay with a 650 W bronze if you are running a quad-core CPU and only plan on gaming and doing normal work on your computer. For reference, I have a 3950X CPU (16 cores/32 threads) and the reference 6800 XT (both stock speeds) - If I run a CPU & GPU stress test at the same time I can hit 675 watts at the wall measured with a meter but this is NOT likely to happen in the real world.. With the Heaven GPU benchmark running I hit 500 watts which is way more realistic and if you have a lower-core CPU then you should be well under 500 watts. In general, try not to exceed 80% of your PSU's rated capacity - in your case 520 watts at the wall.
      Hopefully that helps!

      The calculator says 486 watts load at stock settings and recommends 536 so you should be good in good shape with the 650 W PSU in almost every situation, especially if you aren't overclocking. One thing to note about your PSU is to check how much wattage it delivers on the 12V rail. Usually, this number will be a little less than the 'advertised wattage' (in this case 650 W) so as long as it isn't too far off then you should be good!

    Well, I'm more of a guy who overclocks and undervolts at the same time. I have with my RX 5700 (BIOS flashed) at 2030mhz just under 150W of power. According to my socket, my whole system (so only my PC) consumes a maximum of 370W of power under load with Prime95 and MSI Kombuster. I have a Ryzen 5 2600 @4.2Ghz.
    I have a 600W power supply. If I now buy a more efficient Ryzen 5 6000X or 7000X (depending on what comes out) and a RX6800 and I do the same as with my current PC, that should actually work well.... Oh, my CPU consumes under full load just under 140W...

      Compared to the 6800 XT it looks like the 1080 pulls up to 100 watts less. Overclocking probably brings that number closer to the 6800 xt but you are still close to the line there. My hunch is that your system will run fine but you might run into issues during heavy loads or if you try to overclock.

    My Suggestion: Get a power supply that's twice (2x) as strong as your calculated wattage. The calculator said I was using 455w and I still managed to overload my 6mo old gold-rated 650w PS and cause several shutdowns.
    I run an RX 6800 gpu with 5600X cpu & 32 gb Ram with 3 SSDs and I game @ 1440p with my gpu-synced 165hz monitor with browsers and other apps often open in the background.

      600 watts is right on the line as I've recommended a 650 watt in the video for that card. If you don't want to upgrade your PSU you could try to undervolt the card through the Radeon software or other 'overclocking' software. I've found that the card does really well with undervolting, especially if you don't try to overclock it at the same time, and you might could lower the power consumption enough to create stability. I don't have a guide for this process myself (yet) but it should be easy to find a guide for undervolting the 6800 in the meantime. Also, be sure that BIOS, chipset, and all drivers are competely up to date as using the 5600x on a b450 board might still be working out kinks with power management.

      I think you will be okay with the 850. Although the red devil has 3 8-pin power connectors I can't imagine it would actually pull all 480 watts. I figure 400 absolute max wattage on the card compared to the 350 I mentioned in the video so 850 is still enough. If you are planning on doing a lot of overclocking you could run into issues but I think 850 will handle it. Worst case scenario you have to upgrade the psu after you get the card but I doubt it.

    Ideally, you want the PSU to be at half load. That's like most things in life really. So, if it says 500w load in the calculator. You'll want a 1000w PSU. But, a 800 watt will do just fine. Maybe even a 700w, the closer you get to the load the harder it is on the PSU and less efficient.
