My takeaway from this launch: I love to see AMD trading blows with Nvidia for GPU’s and Intel for CPU’s. In all of the crazy shit that 2020 gave us, AMD was definitely a shining light 🤘
Amazing benchmark results Steve! I'm very impressed that AMD stepped up a lot to include the necessary hardware components that would compete with NVIDIA. With different line-ups, AMD's raster and ray tracing performance (except for 2 games) deserve the recognition; especially with their 1st gen ray tracing hardware. Of course, the bad performance on Minecraft and Control is due to them being way more optimized to NVIDIA cards by using their proprietary APIs. Once Minecraft (and many other games ahead) get their developers to include more open and vendor-neutral APIs (such as DirectML or Vulkan) to support all other hardware, then that'd be an interesting result to see.

linux performance. Nvidea doesnt officially support linux on its gaming cards on launch, and usually releases a stripped down locked down closed off driver months laiter. you literally cannot overclock Nvidea cards on linux. AMD however offers full open source drivers for linux on launch day; and i'd be willing to bet that the 6900xt scales alot better on linux.
AMD is doing the same thing they did to Intel. Ignore the super high end, exclusive overclocking and sticking with standard gamers. 1440p is where i see most gamers sitting while maintaining any stupid fast frame rate at that resolution. I like the 6900XT in that regard.
I completely agree. Here's a comment i copypasta'd from other posts I've commented on. It's not worded directly for you, but has a lot of good info for making purchases "AMD cards have always been a good competitor to Nvidia through price/performance difference. So in raw computing power for most games 6900XT WITH OC - beats 3080ti in most cases 6800XT WITOUT OC Rivals the 3080ti with amd performing about 5% slower in most cases 6800 needs overclocking to compete with 3080/3080ti At the time, AMD's drivers were kinda bad. You could game, but a crash would inevitably happen at some point. Obviously, most people would rather pay a little more premium for something more reliable. But now! AMD is pretty darn good, i also used to be a Nvidia fanboy cause of the driver problems. My card almost never crashes tho now with the recent updates ranging a few months back from (March 2022) I have a ASUS 6800XT Strix LC i picked up for about $1250, and it beats MOST 3080ti's obviously, a water cooled 3080ti that is overclocked to all hell will beat it out, but then consumes WAY more power and runs hot. For gaming NOW, not 2020/ early 2021 AMD all the way, their version of FRS is a lot better than it was, cards rarely crash. Software functions mostly as it should, with some minor glitches, but doesn't affect game play or stability. a 6900XT with little overclock runs cooler than a 3080ti/3090 and still consumes less overall wattage WHILST having similar or better performance. Some games have an NVIDIA/AMD bias ofc. But a $1500 card beating out a $2000+ set of cards is a deal for me."

I have found this so strange between the new cards. In 1440P the AMD cards are SUPER close like within 1% of the Nvidia cards or beating them, but moving to 4K seem to just get crushed. They have the memory to easily keep up. My question is would it be the extra "hyper threaded" cuda cores making up the difference or is it just a driver issue. We all know that AMD cards age like a fine wine due to driver optimizations. I know the core counts are massive between AMD and Nvidia. I mean AMD has the technology to hyper thread their stream processors easily doubling their core counts to compete with Nvidia. I don't know how many people have 4k 120hz and above panels because of the price but it seems like gaming has shifted from 1080 to 1440P which I am fine with as I have three 1440p 144hz monitors which I think "should' be fine for the next couple of years.

Here is wishing you a quick recovery from your surgery.... sad part on the GPUs is that you can't even buy any of the better versions of the past generation cards right now (not counting scalper prices)... You are lucky to find a RX 5500, RX 570/560... even a GTX 1660ti is impossible to find at Micro Center, Best Buy or Newegg... AMD and Nvidia really missed the mark this holiday season.

I would have liked to see workstation benchmarks if time would have permitted them to be included to really see if one card is superior to the other if we can even say that between these two cards at this point. That's what I thought I would see but not this time I guess but with 16gb of vram I guess this card is clearly better on workstation tasks I guess. Great review still though.
Steve, are we going to get a review of your surgery? Were the doctors competent, how was the gear they used; old, new, how fast were they, any crashes or stalls? Mesh or total mess? We want to know.
I wonder how the AMD/NVidia in game performance will look a few years down the line given that both PS5 and XBox are using AMD hardware, which in turn makes developers optimize their software to run on AMD hardware.... Up to now NVidia was the only game in town in terms of top performance. This may change as developers focus on AMD hardware.
@@dirkslipperypeanutdiggler9211 I think it did. Imagine if they used Nvidia and no consoles used AMD? Problem was AMD was about 1 or 2 generations behind Nvidia.. Now, they're about equal again except for ray-tracing.
I keep forgetting to ask this!: On your AMD tests, do you ever bother with the Override Application Settings option in the Radeon drivers? There are a few games that get just get weird with AMD cards, Slime Rancher and Everspace to name two; Borderlands 2 has some occasional issues as well. So, sometimes you'll need to do that, and I wonder if you've hit any of those.
well, not only that - 3080ti will be out soon with the same performance as 3090 but $500 cheaper. there's zero reason to buy 6900 xt over 3080ti if you're in that price range
For real though, the 3080/3070 looks so good right now. I mean, virtually almost nobody will buy these cards to game at lower resolutions at that price range for less features so it's a Nvidia win...
All these results are price dependent. At the moment, in Australia, some RX6900XT's are cheaper than some RX6800XT's. They are still both too expensive for me - being over $2000aud.
Would be interested in seeing this redone with an AMD 5000 series CPU and 32 GB of ram (4x8 sticks 3600 not 3200), maybe when AIB cards start coming out?
I got a 6900xt. It has some large issues no reviewer seems to talk about. In some games at 1080p or 1440p it down clocks a lot. The utilization and power draw will drop and your frames will drop with them. I'm talking about getting 45fps in Fallout 76 level drop. Seems to be a software issue. The card is in power-saving mode as if it thinks your not gaming or it's not demanding enough to clock up for. Lots of people are having this issue. Id love your Thoughts on this Steve. I get more FPS in 4k than I do in 2k or even 1080p in some games.. Seems to affect Warzone, Apex Legends, Fallout 76. At least in my testing.
This solidifies my decision on what new gpu i want. Better to just go vanilla 6800 and overclock it than to get the 6900xt.im upgrading from a 3600 to a 5800x later anyway so ill always get the chance to combine sam and rage mode later if i need more performance.
6900XT proves the best option to go for interms of price and performance, 3090 only seems to get 10fps on avg better and costs alot more, True the raytracing is better on nvidia, But only 2 games made good use of it, Most games look shit with raytracing, O look at some pretty shadows that you dont pay attention to in combat over performance, Unreal 5 engine for fake raytracing looks just as good for zero performance lost, AMD have done a good job even if they done a scammy thing limited the sam mode to the latest 5000 series cpu. But i think it can improve more if they increase the power draw from 250 to 300 like they said, That is hampering the card for its overclocking and overall performance potential.
Nice review as usual, biggest issue today is lack of gpu,cpu availability . Had to compromise and locate a used gpu and a Ryzen 5 2600 instead of the 3600 for my build since no stock available for reasonable price.
I love how Steve, unlike others actually tells us why we should by a product based on performance and not just read off a script the sponsor gave them.
@@marcusborderlands6177 Why lol that's like saying you just want to see 6GHz CPU clock speed. You can buy a shitty FX and get just that, but the performance will be abysmal. Clock speed really does not do much when the cores themselves are shit.
@@addictedtoRS thats exactly what im saying, lmfao. i just want to see 3ghz on a gpu. I am aware that clock speed means jack shit, and that FX cpus still perform like shit at 8ghz, that doesnt mean its not cool that you can get one to 8ghz. So i just wanna see one hit 3, just for shits and giggles
AMD really needs to have a DLSS-like tech to at least bring these cards into playable framerates at 1440p-4k with raytracing, it's really their biggest Achilles' heel right now imo, not the Turing level of Raytracing performance... because there aren't that many games making extensive use of all the raytracing features that favor the Ampere cards, and by the time that there are, we'll probably be talking about RX 7000 series already!...
Yes along with memory frequency sweet spots. The 4K times memory doesn’t seem to work at all with the current bios and there seems little advantage between memory speeds upwards of 3200. General advice really.
Maybe I’m missing something here but the 3080 seems like the best value if you plan on spending this much. Of course it depends on what you play but I thought 6900 would flex harder on the 3090 🤷🏽♂️
At the time of writing this comment, the 6900XT is equal now, if not better with some overclocking while still running at lower temps and lower wattage. And to be fair, the 3090 has 24gb of ram, the 6900xt has 16. $1500 card beating a $2400 card is enough for me.
That's assuming you play with HRR 1440p, or 4k. Absolutely no point buying either for anything 1080p, or for non-HRR mid res. Which is most people. I'm honestly more excited to see AMD's future low tier offering, assuming it's not another polaris refresh. The low tier market has gotten way too expensive, with the 3060ti being 18% overpriced over previous generations. Getting to the point where there is no more "entry level", which is bad for the future enthusiast.
@@V1CT1MIZED my point is soon there will not be any new enthusiasts. Since most enthusiasts started out as broke kids buying their first hardware with their allowance. Hard to become an enthusiast if you can't afford to get started.
Quick note on that sponsorship, is it not a little misleading (for want of a better word) to briefly show a chart of VRM temps when discussing a CPU cooler? I appreciate that it makes perfect sense in the original review and if you read what the graph says, but given the brief time it is shown I'm concerned it could be mistaken for CPU thermals. Correct me if I'm wrong! I hope the surgery goes well, you said it's only minor but it's still not a fun experience.
Hi GN. First off great channel, thanks! Im a R9 390 user, and i havnt been able to find any reviews of the new cards anywhere, which compares the new GPUs to older cards. Any chance you could do a comparison at some point? Even though youre probably sick of GPUs by now. Im sure im not the only person rocking awesome old hardware, looking to upgrade this gen.
Well if you check the initial 3080 reviews thers a lot of comparing to previous gen...but you really dont need it cos 2020 is a MASSIVE generational jump ..no point going through the numbers...if your cards are more than 3 years old its time to upgrade....
I'm cracking up with these responses. The 3080 is currently HALF the price as the 2080 was and AMD's performance/price competition on NVidia's heels will drive that price down. As I said "will end up" being the sweet spot (I'm obviously not talking right at this moment.) As for somebody bringing up 3090's.. ?? You're kidding right? lol
@@Corvaire I guess what you mean is that 3080 will drop a little bit in price and you will get something with more VRAM in between 3080 and 3090 maybe at the same price 3080 was at launch. It's possible but at 800 bucks it's not really sweet spot considering how the economy is doing, I find the current 3080 at a lower price possibly being the sweet spot instead, and by sweet spot I mean price to performance and being affordable enough to be adopted by the masses.

Once Minecraft (and many other games ahead) get their developers to include more open and vendor-neutral APIs (such as DirectML or Vulkan) to support all other hardware, then that'd be an interesting result to see.

yo i just watched your g403 review video, you've come a long way my dude! keep it up
I have found this so strange between the new cards.

I wonder how the AMD/NVidia in game performance will look a few years down the line given that both PS5 and XBox are using AMD hardware, which in turn makes developers optimize their software to run on AMD hardware....
I thinking about 3080 or 6900xt ? What you thing ? Witch one should i buy ?
did you try by disabling ULPS?

Great review Steve. Can you do a Ryzen memory comparison and the issues with 2k fabric clock. Good luck with the surgery

@@csswork1475 it will just have more memory, other than that it will not out perform the 3090.
