@@Jok3rzZ117 You do realise that the only reason Nvidia's cards such as the 3080 are so cheap relative to the 2080 ti which sold for 1100 or so MSRP and often far above in reality is because of AMD right? If it wasn't for AMD, Nvidia would be charging 1000 plus for the 3080 most likely. Competition is good as it drives DOWN prices, not raises them up and if AMD beats Nvidia at some stage outright and puts up their prices, then you can just go to Nvidia for cheaper. And there will always be cheaper cards released as well. Whereas if Nvidia or AMD are outright winning for far too long, they'll up prices to ridiculous levels.

Let's just thank AMD for somewhat getting back into competition in gaming GPUs and making nvidia a bit more worried, which will likely lead to appearance of even better GPUs in future (Like it was with super series)
Frankly, anyone expecting Nvidia to be embarrassed by AMD was batshit insane.
Not 6 months ago Nvidia cracked the market by releasing cards that were more than twice as powerful as the previous gen and for half the price.
AMD also spent its last years slaying the Intel beast more and more. And you expected them to both humiliate Intel, catch up to years of delay to Nvidia, and destroy Nvidia when it has the best gen in years?
AMD managed to go from being the backwater company to catching up to Nvidia and beating them in the classic department. Winning in Raytracing in their first RT gen when Nvidia already has one behind was never going to happen. AMD deserves a pat on the back and a kiss for what they've done already, that's an excellent growth.
Also, people don't mention this enough, but AMD relies on Vulkan and DX12 to power up a good part of its RT, as I understand it. Will that make them beat Nvidia? Almost definitely not, but it means the gap will shorten.
Shorthand of this gen's war is that if you want solid, powerful, classic graphics, and Linux gameplay or have a FreeSync screen, AMD is the better choice. If you want 4K/GSync and full RT power, Nvidia is the choice. If you care for none of those points, 6800 XT vs 3080 is pretty much a tie and either card will greatly satisfy you. Great job AMD for actually managing this.
All good points.
2 things though. 1) Tons of Freesync monitors work with Nvidia GPUs, just double check before you buy - no reason to pay the Gsync premium. 2) Is 6 months ago a typo? Cause 30 series released 2 months ago... in any event these companies know what their competition is bringing. And did Nvidia just cut the price in half out of the goodness of their heart? I don't think so. I think they knew what big Navi had in store - they could guess from extrapolating the new console specs if nothing else - and lowered their price. If the 6800xt had come out with performance around a 2080 Ti, I promise you the rtx3080 would cost $1000 MSRP.
It's what I've been trying to preach to people, dont be team red or team green, be team COMPETITION. When they're neck and neck WE win. :)
More than twice as powerful for half the pruce? Were you high when you wrote this? Did you lie on purpose or is this just malicious misrepresentation?

People don't realize how true this is. Just watch his RTX 3070 review. Negative title and face, but praises it for 90% of the video and talks about the supply issues for like 30 seconds. Here, positive title and face, then proceeds to talk about how much Radeon is missing and how it's not worth buying, but talks about the cards having good gaming performance for like 30 second...
@@4mash this isnt true, the conclusion is the title and his conclusion for these cards is that amd didnt disappoint. watch the whole video
@@dertythegrower Dang, someones salty. If he was really simply a "fact bringer," then he wouldn't of click-baited the video. Not hating on Linus for doing such as that is what every other RUclipsr does to get more clicks, but take that into account. People come thinking that AMD crushed nvidia, as that's basically what linus's first video on these cards was, because he uses a title suggesting that the cards lived up to his expectations. If anyone needs to sink, its you. If you were capable of critical thinking, maybe you would of noticed the stark contrast between the title and the video.

@@WahotsW Based on what I'm seeing on Twitter right now, AMD might get stomped on availability. It's looking worse than Nvidia's launch early on.
I'm still rocking that 7970 Ghz edition, but I'd like to upgrade soon. One experience I've had that I think will work out in AMD's favor for their new cards is that the performance and features just kept getting better for years. Software features can be added with driver updates, and if you look at old 7970 vs. GTX 670 reviews, they were neck in neck at release, but 2 years later the 7970 had a 15% performance lead. Also, just like the new cards, it had twice as much VRAM which made way better in the long run.
The last video card I bought was a GTX 570. Good god has everything improved so much since then. Might hold out on a new build for another year or two.

These cards are even faster now with AMD's newer drives. Considerably faster in fact. 6800 beats a 3070 almost always now.
It actually reaches around the 3080. Around only 10% slower.
as it should, 6800 competed with 3080 not 3070, its not price that determines level, its bus width and tier or card, nvidia charge extra for ai and cuda and other stuff linus mentioned in this video, while rx 6900 direct rival was 3090, later rx 6950 xt vs 3090 ti. 3070 rival was and still is 6700 xt
Awesome review as always. Really enjoy your content! Question though: what are your thoughts on the vram difference? Im gaming at 4k and want to upgrade soon.
The Title: "AMD did NOT disappoint me"
The Content: "quite frankly I am disappointed and can't recommend these cards."

Something that no one mentions is that AMD released 4 major products this year. That is crazy hard, and I am without a doubt certain that a LOT of people will still not be happy with what AMD has done. Nvidia had to release only one product line and they blew it.
Feedback: Actually the review was a bit confusing. I can see how AMD fell short in RT. But I really did not get a clear indicator of just overall performance across a wide array of games.
I get it is weaker in RT and lacks features compared to 3XXX, but I lack any real info on performance for the games I play or value comparison.
I would prefer if you guys had another go at it, with another video showing some standard benchmarks, across more games and maybe a few synthetics.
It will probably be the same conclusion. But I do not feel like I was brought along for the ride of what lead to that logic.
Watch hardwarecanucks vid.
Or Hardware Unboxed
+1 for Hardware Unboxed. Their video is more in depth and covers 18 games at different resolutions. I watched it before the LTT video and came away with a far clearer understanding of the relative performance of each card. Spoiler alert, they found the 6800XT to be superior at 1440p while the 3080 does better at 4k. They also didn't see such a huge disparity with RT in the games they tested (although terrible performance in Minecraft RTX seems pretty certain).
Basically there is no meaningful difference between them in real world rasterised gaming but once you turn RT on AMD fall behind a lot and then in games that have both RT and DLSS 2.0 support the 6800 series is getting bested by even a 2060 super. Ouch.
yeah basically none of the games i play have ray tracing, nor do i have a 4k monitor, nor do i do rendering or video editing. i’d like to see some other comparisons.

Hah i was there in all the old video's 🙋
And Intel will still be on 14nm.
EDIT: This is a joke, I love both AMD _and_ Intel. :)
maybe they'll be in stock by then
It's 2024 and I just purchased a Red Devil 6800 XT for $429 to upgrade from my old trusty 2070 Super. Given the lack of performance increase of the 7800 XT and the unaffordability of the RTX 4000 series, I believe I made the best choice performance-to-price at this time.
Why wasn't the large VRAM difference mentioned in the review? I always had a hunch this was gonna cause issues much sooner than people realized and I was right. Very happy I went with the 6800XT over a 3080. The 16GB VRAM allows the Radeon GPUs to max out textures for another couple of years, literally giving you a better looking game without tanking FPS. Ray Tracing requires extra VRAM so that's out of the equation.
Most gamers upgrade their GPU every 4-5 years or so. Taking this into account, **unless you're the kind of enthusiast who upgrades every 2 years to get top gear**, the AMD cards were and still are a MUCH better buy and in my opinion this should have been obvious for tech experts.
Keep in mind a lot of people make their purchasing decisions based off reviews and advice from channels like LTT. I personally know a lot of 8-10GB RTX3000 owners that now wish they went with AMD's 12-16GB cards. There is a mismatch between GPU power and VRAM for Nvidia cards, which is a serious issue that AMD cards don't have. The 4070Ti and 4080 will also choke on VRAM long before the GPUs become "slow", which is unacceptable considering their ridiculous price tags, making the 7900 cards or even a 6950XT automatically a better buy for most gamers. Some new games already require over 14GB VRAM.
This should be adressed by LTT imo. Other channels have already made videos about it. I'm just wondering why you didn't see this coming and didn't even acknowledge the VRAM difference at all in your reviews.
Can’t believe that they are aiming at ANOTHER 50% Perf Per Watt in ONLY 1 yr.

Another "not a paper launch" where retailers get like 15 cards to sell and ebay slingers are the big winners.
That's why they should launch entry-level and low-end to mid-range GPUs first. Like the sub-mid range rx5700xt or low-end rx 480/580 back in 2016 and 2019.
These die sizes are way too big for big volume.
@@badass6300 But those also meet waaayyy more demand, and make a worse impression on the customer (first impression of high end vs first impression of low end/mid range)
I dont get the issue. Let the first early adapters fight between themselves, and when the manufacturer fixes glitches, problems and the price is a tad lower, then buy one. Early buyers are nothing more than test benches for the manufacturer.
ebay slingers are only winners if people buy them at their ridiculous prices... which no one should do. Just wait for more stock.
@@christoph6055 except that you get about 6-8x times more cards and you also need less PCB components, less VRAM, so yeah.

Nice to see some high-end competition finally come back
Here we are in the future in September 2023 on the eve of the release of the RX 7800 and STARFIELD, and I just ordered a new 6800 for just £349. I also ordered a new Asrock Intel Arc A770 for £190.
Yes, folks in November 2020, Intel actually did it. They made some GPUs, and even got some partners on board (Asrock, Acer and Sparkle). And they ain't half-bad, though it's taken almost a year of driver updates to get them mostly stable and performing quite well.
They don't run STARFIELD though. But then hardly anything does, not above 60 FPS, even at 1080p - not without upscaling.
Anyway, I already have a new RTX 4070 in my main rig thanks to some interest-free credit, but I've got addicted to buying and messing about with alternative GPUs now that they are not ridiculously priced... apart from the ultra high-end stuff.

RX 4/500 was a disappointment.
If AMD had priced it $50 less than NVIDIA instead of $50 above, they would be in a very compelling spot given the issues with their card are marginal. But for $50 more you get equal performance on most titles at full resolution, worse performance compared to DLSS, worse productivity, and no AI enhancements.
