We’ve come a long way in PC technology in the last decade, and it made us wonder: how slow is the slowest brand new PC you can build? Well today, we’ll find out how slow a desktop can be with reasonable selections if you are on a budget, and compare them to what you SHOULD by, to get a sense of just how slow you can go.

That and an SSD
I gues the idea was that laypeople wouldn't _know_ that. they would see that hey they need a gpu and then got a gpu not knowing that the CPU they picked had an integrated gpu and that the gpu they picked was literally worse than nothing.
mom and dad dont have money? might as well die now
i don’t know about anyone else but the 210 would have been my go-to when someone had their onboard graphics fail and didn’t want to go for a more expensive option (like a new computer or a decent card). iirc the retail one can also be adapted to a half-height slot, so it’s useful to “fix” slimline desktops too. it’s not really a gaming video card, just an output card.
Exactly. I bought a 210 when my old PC's graphics card failed. Found it in my Amazon history - £27.56 in May 2011.
Wasn't any point in spending much more, as the PC was already 5 years old and not exactly a gaming powerhouse. Still ran Kerbal Space Program, Civilization V and Source engine games!
The CPUs built in gpu is like 4 times faster than the dedicated gpu

Ditch the GT 210 for a used (no older than 2 generations behind current) midrange graphics card, double the RAM (either 2x4GB or 1x8GB), and add an SSD at least as a boot drive to complement the HDD, it would be a decent stop gap PC.

The GeForce 210 works pretty great for my "retro" pc which has Windows XP and by default it had GMA 4500 , so 210 was a solid upgrade without me having to get a 710 for it , because it can run most (if not all) games built for Windows XP , whereas the GMA is probably capable of running only half of them. Also another use may be if you want to use KVM with GPU passthrough, you need to have a second card for running the DE , although I think atleast a 710 is recommended for that purpose... Also , you can find those second hand at 5-10 dollars
Wait why were those your options couldn’t you of gotten an 8800 GT?
One thing linus didn't mention in particular is the hard drive itself. He obviously used a WD green, which, if you didn't know, lowers power consumption by slowing down the mechanical parts and read/write speeds. Most hard drives will range from 5400-7200rpm, some going to around 10000 if you are willing to spend some extra dollars on a little more speed, but the WD Green series are notorious for having only the 5400rpm option, with WD Blue having both a 5400 and 7200 option, but quite faster reads and writes.
As for what might make this pc even slower, I believe that you can get PCIe 1x to 16x risers, which would make each individual throughput from the 1x slot 16 times slower, though whether that would just make the gpu completely useless in of itself i don't truly know, it was just a thought that came to my mind when i saw that 1x slot.
When he said "we're not even using an SSD" I swear it felt like Linus called me a caveman.
SSDs are so cheap nowadays that anyone who doesnt have any is just asking for the pc to be slow...

My honest recommendation for a budget gaming PC is to go for an old office PC (like the Dell optiplex) that has at least a 4 core CPU with at least 2x4GB of RAM, ideally DDR3 for about 150 dollars then 150 dollars for a GPU that does not require an extra 6 pin power connector, like a RX550 4GB (about 140-150 on amazon new) or a more powerful used GPU (ebay has a 1060Ti 6GB for around 100-150 dollars used) though the 1060 would require an extra 6pin but you can get an adaptor a couple dollars on ebay too, so as long as the PSU in the cheap old office PC has enough cables to adapt you should be fine, after all that you will have a great 1080p 60fps medium/high settings gaming PC.
It will of course always be better to save and get better parts, for an extra 150 (so 450 total) you could get a slightly better base old office PC and a 1070/Ti which is going for around 200-250 on ebay and would probably take you from 60 to 90 fps at 1080p with the same settings.

thats crazy lmao guess i really did balance it well price to performance
and i got the q300L instead of the 500. pretty much part for part the same build
also, my 3100 is overclocked at 4.1ghz and undervolted and it's still stable as fuck, and a beast, so an even better deal like that

My school: 👀👀

@@mindfreez05 I mean that's my personal computer, my school computers barely even boot
This is my personal build that i bought back in June 2020 here in Pakistan worth 30,000 PKR (around 300 USD according to the exchange rate back then):
Motherboard: MSI H61
Processor: Intel Core i5-3570 @ 3.40 GHz
GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 960 2GB
RAM: 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR3 1600 MHz
SSD: Samsung 128 GB
PSU: Cooler Master 500 W
(Not a single thing was brand new and the HDD isn't included as i already had one of 500 GB which i later upgraded to 2TB along with the Kingston A400 240GB SSD.. Plus, i am still using this one for gaming and streaming..)
Finally a build I can relate to!
Hey Linus, I was an IT contractor who bought a few GT 210 tier cards for my work. Basically my office manager would tell me a certain computer needed dual monitors, but I would discover it had onboard graphics with only one output. The office wouldn't have enough budget for a new computer and didn't want dongles, so I would go to bestbuy and buy one of these for more outputs.
Yep! Have a couple of similar, if not the same, cards on a shelf at the office for dual monitor upgrades. $35 on average at our local PC parts store, and good enough for excel!
I've got an All in Wonder 3650 in one machine even
if its for work, then buying used graphics card should be fine
that's a fair reason... one of a few though
Also another valid reason I can think of is for Hypervisor/Server monitoring.
If all you need is a (dedicated) device you can assign to get a monitor output then you want the cheapest thing available.
No point paying 100+ bucks for a gfx card you're only ever going to use for like 5 minutes or an hour to tweak/configure some shit once a month/year :)
Why not a gt 710 though?

@@TheWarmotor ya I'm planning on building a PC in like one week (No graphics card for now but pre-ordered it) and I'm planning on not putting a single RGB light not even for the PC case fans RGB used to look cool until every single person started putting it and calling a shit box PC a good PC for gaming
@@aswin8688 agreed! RGB is just cheese now. I do set the RGB on my mechanical KB to highlight WASD and stuff, and the case fan lights are set to bright white to make my white case really pop :)

Linus I totally agree with you, I use to have a Intel dual core. It was slooow, 1.2GHz ooh man not good, so I upgraded to four HP elitebooks running Intel Core i7 3840QM CPU laptops, 3.7GHz it's a beast, well for my preferences. It's perfect for me.

A good option is near the end of a computer cycle buying a laptop brand new as it goes on sale.
They end up falling in the $300 range, are not e-waste, and come with all the warrantees you could want because they are just trying to get them off the shelf for the next gen that comes in next week.
The company I work at right now uses those cheap graphics cards as just a second video port output with the stock optiplexs that only have 1 video output from the motherboard.
