Important Update: I’ve only just noticed an error I made with this video as I was going over the data. For the ‘stock operating temperatures’ and ’40 dBA normalized operating’ graphs I messed up in Excel and swapped the ‘GPU Die’ and ‘VRM PCB’ temperatures around for the XFX RX 6800 XT Speedster Merc 319. This means the stock GPU die temp is 74c as shown earlier in the video with the Tomb Raider footage and the VRM temp is 66c. This is an embarrassing mistake that quite shockingly no one noticed. Apologizes for the error and I will correct the data for future reviews.
Thank you for the update. I've watched this video many times, and I didn't suspect anything when I saw how much cooler the Merc was. So that means the noise-normalised Merc GPU Die temp is actually 63 degrees, so 4 degrees cooler than the AMD Reference, which is still pretty great. What I find more interesting is how good the AMD Reference is in terms of noise-normalised GPU die temp; it's matched by the Nitro+, bettered by 1 degree by the Red Devil, and bettered by 4 degrees by the Merc; that's a really tight grouping that we don't normally see when comparing AIB cards with the reference design.

I think it's the most beautiful 6800 xt gpu. It's skipped the rgb bs and has a professional-premium feeling with a dash of gaming looks! Well done XFX!
The Quick, which is the same cooler just the fan shroud is plastic (which doesn't matter) is even more neat, no side plate with the RGB just pure uncovered heatsink.

@@sabrevanson4412 I quite like the aesthetics of my ASUS ROG Strix 6800 XT. It only says "Radeon" in small lettering in the middle and has a black metallic backplate. Mounted vertically it looks like a futuristic blower style gpu where there's ROG and Strix branding but it's very stealth looking. Like those low profile black police cars. The RGB looks awesome and like I said you can't make out the branding much or whether it is a Radeon or GeForce gpu in a vertical setup. I quite like it. It's very different from what's out there.

It is good though. Non essential little aesthetic bits are plastic, while large surface area cover is metallic to radiate heat, instead of plastic trapping it. Costs lowered while design is functional. Nitro plus from what I remember is all plastic, except the backplate.
Not a bid deal, end of the day, a well made card that delivers on quality, cooling performance and quietness...chill kid. focusing on the wrong things..
This is honestly the cleanest looking 6800xt of them all imo. I do wish they hadn't spluttered that big white text on the backplate though but otherwise it's very aesthetically pleasing to look at.
I'm glad that in recent years/GPU series XFX has ones again proven to be able to bring out good/great looking (personal opinion) cards and make them perform very good at the same time. This has been different in de past, around the R9 290(X) days, where the cards still looked nice but were underperforming. So good job XFX.

@@butstough I managed to find one at my local MC on Monday. With a bit of effort you can tidy it up nicely and it overclocks like a champ. Got it running at 2.7Ghz maintaining a cool 54C.

2 years later, got one for 569 USD and two free games. Fit my case with only a few millimeters to spare. Still a great card and tremendous value in a ridiculous market.
Have you had any noise issues? I got mine off amazon for 569 as well and I just sent it back bc it made ridiculous noise that could be heard through noise cancelling head phones. Idk it it was bc it was the Core edition instead of the black or not. Looking into a new card now. Not sure where to go.
It says it's 34cm can you confirm that? Because most of the time the sizes aren't 100% right. If it's that size it won't fit my case unfortunately and I can't find another 6800 XT in that price range
@@aloahe4807 I got an ROG Strix 6800 XT on Monday. MC had only one. I couldn't believe it. Felt like I'd won the lottery when in fact I was given a chance to spend my money to buy a product, which I love but that's how dire things currently are with new GPU/CPU's.
Seems like they really tried to fix the problems people had with their previous generation coolers. Glad to see XFX back on top, their 290 series coolers were always my favorite (even tho I had the Sapphire Vapor X card myself)
Sad thing is 2 years later this is STILL a top end card. I remember back on the mid to later 2000's I would upgrade my graphics card yearly. Something tells me I'll be holding on to my 2060 Super for a few more years.
Got an XFX MERC319 6750XT and couldnt be happier with it, they really took feedback from their 5000 series GPU and made thermal padding much better. Mine runs at a max frequency of 2623Mhz with temps reaching 60-62 Celsius in Apex and Forza Horizon 5 Maxed-out settings. Beautiful design too!
@@SyNtH1fEyEd Nice!!! Do recommend turning off Zero RPM mode in the AMD Adrenalin software, under 'Tuning'. Its bad feature from AMD but everything else is amazing. And be sure to download the recommened driver update, not optional. Optional caused crashes that the recommended Drivers fixed instantly.

Its funny, but he didn't. So we had a review with the graphics settings dumbed down in favor of AMD. That's exactly what Nvidia said, in a really piss poor manner and he's done it again here. Anyone looking to game in 4K wants RT on so we want results with the max settings applied not cherry picked results with some stuff on and some stuff off.
@Rahq Vuth I don't like to not have something. If you can pick one of 2 cards and they are 3 percent apart in frames, but one has RT and DLSS and the other doesn't which one should you buy? It has to be part of the reviews or at least mentioned in every review. I have a 2070 super right now and am using both DLSS and RT in 2077. I'm about to upgrade into my next gen card. Do I want to lose RT and DLSS? I'm already using it in several tittles.

It includes benchmarks from **one** game because the **only** point of this review is to see how this particular 6800xt AIB card compares to other 6800xt cards. Anyone using this review to compare a 6800xt to any card other than another 6800xt is doing it wrong.
@@rhysiamt agreed, but he included the performance numbers for the 3080 and 3090 in the comparison charts. The game uses RT, but he turned it off. AMD wins. Turn RT on and its a complete beat down for Nvidia. That was the point Nvidia was making, its not a fair comparison if you don't use the best game settings possible and those have to include RT any time its available. You could do a with and without chart, but you have to include it. Otherwise your really not telling the whole story.
@@l8knight845 First, if Steve turned RT on for the 3080 it would reduce performance (by a lot!), making the 3080 look worse by comparison. How would that be "fair"? Second, you're putting Steve and other reviewers in an impossible situation - they literally can't win. If he leaves any Nvidia comparison point out altogether then you can bet, 100%, that there will be a bunch of people in the comments going, "why don't you just include a 3080 & 3090 as a point of reference - you have the data already so it's no extra work". Then he includes it and you have other people saying, "Nvidia does better Raytracing, unfair comparison". You want the "whole story" - and I agree in principle that reviewers should provide the whole story. The thing is though, in the case of Nvidia having RT, DLSS, NVENC, etc, while AMD provide more VRAM, it's a complicated story which can't even remotely be covered in a single benchmark from a single game. That sort of analysis requires many benchmarks and a detailed and nuanced discussion... which is exactly what Steve & Tim have done in the 6800xt review, and follow up dedicated RT & DLSS content! This review is for people already interested in a 6800xt to help them decide which AIB model is the best for them. They should already understand the benefits and limitations of the product. As I said above, if you use this review to compare 3080 & 6800xt you are doing it wrong!

@@flossyhd9450 Give it a month or so for supply to catch up with demand. AMD has said that they've increased production significantly as a result of Nvidia not supplying the market. But those extra cards take time to make and time to ship. Give it a month, and I suspect there will be large shipments coming in.
This is exactly the kind of card I've been looking for for the Radeon 6800 XT. Quiet and cool. If the price wasn't $800 I'd be willing to wait until they were in stock. But at $150 more than MSRP, I'm just going to pick up whatever card is as close to MSRP that I can get.
I found an MSI Unicorn yesterday at Newegg. After 30 consecutive days of spamming F5 at 5pm. I had the privilege of spending 80$ over the 3080 MSRP for an inconsequential graphene back plate. 🤦🏻♂️

6800xt would be compelling if it was actually cheaper than the 3080. But almost every AIB is as expensive if not more than 3080 AIB. Companies like XFX might be making better margins, but they are losing sales. Also supply of any RDNA2 card has been atrocious while Nvidia is ramping up.
Reminds me of the XFX Double Dissapation cards for the R9 200 series. People wanted a 3 fan variant of those because it looked like a sexy minimal looking beast. This is the design people have been eyeing from XFX.
I wish reviewers would show more shots of what the card looks like installed. For those interested you can see a very close up shot of it installed at 3:07. Would've liked to see different angles and a more zoomed out look

Have you had any noise issues? I got mine off amazon for 569 as well and I just sent it back bc it made ridiculous noise that could be heard through noise cancelling head phones. Idk it it was bc it was the Core edition instead of the black or not. Looking into a new card now. Not sure where to go.

It says it's 34cm can you confirm that? Because most of the time the sizes aren't 100% right. If it's that size it won't fit my case unfortunately and I can't find another 6800 XT in that price range

@@aloahe4807 I got an ROG Strix 6800 XT on Monday. MC had only one. I couldn't believe it. Felt like I'd won the lottery when in fact I was given a chance to spend my money to buy a product, which I love but that's how dire things currently are with new GPU/CPU's.

The 319 comes from 3 fans, two are 100mm and the other is 90mm. Could have called it the 191 but Porsche probably would have sued.

Seems like they really tried to fix the problems people had with their previous generation coolers. Glad to see XFX back on top, their 290 series coolers were always my favorite (even tho I had the Sapphire Vapor X card myself)
Sad thing is 2 years later this is STILL a top end card. I remember back on the mid to later 2000's I would upgrade my graphics card yearly. Something tells me I'll be holding on to my 2060 Super for a few more years.

Got the RX-6800 merc. Same size card. 340mm. Nuts size, and runs cool. OC is a breeze and I can run SOTR with sliders maxed out

Got an XFX MERC319 6750XT and couldnt be happier with it, they really took feedback from their 5000 series GPU and made thermal padding much better. Mine runs at a max frequency of 2623Mhz with temps reaching 60-62 Celsius in Apex and Forza Horizon 5 Maxed-out settings. Beautiful design too!

@@SyNtH1fEyEd Nice!!! Do recommend turning off Zero RPM mode in the AMD Adrenalin software, under 'Tuning'. Its bad feature from AMD but everything else is amazing. And be sure to download the recommened driver update, not optional. Optional caused crashes that the recommended Drivers fixed instantly.

My current card is a GTX1060, but ue to lack of support from Nvidia for settings configuration, I am looking for something more Ubuntu friendly. :)

Didn't mention Nvidia's focus on the future of gaming and ray tracing and show side by side RT benchmarks with the 3090. Cancel him!
Its funny, but he didn't. So we had a review with the graphics settings dumbed down in favor of AMD. That's exactly what Nvidia said, in a really piss poor manner and he's done it again here. Anyone looking to game in 4K wants RT on so we want results with the max settings applied not cherry picked results with some stuff on and some stuff off.
@Rahq Vuth I don't like to not have something. If you can pick one of 2 cards and they are 3 percent apart in frames, but one has RT and DLSS and the other doesn't which one should you buy? It has to be part of the reviews or at least mentioned in every review. I have a 2070 super right now and am using both DLSS and RT in 2077. I'm about to upgrade into my next gen card. Do I want to lose RT and DLSS? I'm already using it in several tittles.

It includes benchmarks from **one** game because the **only** point of this review is to see how this particular 6800xt AIB card compares to other 6800xt cards. Anyone using this review to compare a 6800xt to any card other than another 6800xt is doing it wrong.
@@rhysiamt agreed, but he included the performance numbers for the 3080 and 3090 in the comparison charts. The game uses RT, but he turned it off. AMD wins. Turn RT on and its a complete beat down for Nvidia. That was the point Nvidia was making, its not a fair comparison if you don't use the best game settings possible and those have to include RT any time its available. You could do a with and without chart, but you have to include it. Otherwise your really not telling the whole story.
@@l8knight845 First, if Steve turned RT on for the 3080 it would reduce performance (by a lot!), making the 3080 look worse by comparison. How would that be "fair"?
Second, you're putting Steve and other reviewers in an impossible situation - they literally can't win. If he leaves any Nvidia comparison point out altogether then you can bet, 100%, that there will be a bunch of people in the comments going, "why don't you just include a 3080 & 3090 as a point of reference - you have the data already so it's no extra work". Then he includes it and you have other people saying, "Nvidia does better Raytracing, unfair comparison".
You want the "whole story" - and I agree in principle that reviewers should provide the whole story. The thing is though, in the case of Nvidia having RT, DLSS, NVENC, etc, while AMD provide more VRAM, it's a complicated story which can't even remotely be covered in a single benchmark from a single game. That sort of analysis requires many benchmarks and a detailed and nuanced discussion... which is exactly what Steve & Tim have done in the 6800xt review, and follow up dedicated RT & DLSS content!
This review is for people already interested in a 6800xt to help them decide which AIB model is the best for them. They should already understand the benefits and limitations of the product.
As I said above, if you use this review to compare 3080 & 6800xt you are doing it wrong!

@@flossyhd9450 Give it a month or so for supply to catch up with demand. AMD has said that they've increased production significantly as a result of Nvidia not supplying the market. But those extra cards take time to make and time to ship. Give it a month, and I suspect there will be large shipments coming in.

This is exactly the kind of card I've been looking for for the Radeon 6800 XT. Quiet and cool. If the price wasn't $800 I'd be willing to wait until they were in stock.
But at $150 more than MSRP, I'm just going to pick up whatever card is as close to MSRP that I can get.

I found an MSI Unicorn yesterday at Newegg. After 30 consecutive days of spamming F5 at 5pm. I had the privilege of spending 80$ over the 3080 MSRP for an inconsequential graphene back plate. 🤦🏻♂️

Wow fantastic to see xfx coming blazing back onto the scene with this behemoth. Their 5000 series cards weren't great so seeing them put out this high quality of a card is really exciting.

Your "NEW" editorial direction exhumes at least 24GB more RGB.
6800xt would be compelling if it was actually cheaper than the 3080. But almost every AIB is as expensive if not more than 3080 AIB. Companies like XFX might be making better margins, but they are losing sales. Also supply of any RDNA2 card has been atrocious while Nvidia is ramping up.

Reminds me of the XFX Double Dissapation cards for the R9 200 series. People wanted a 3 fan variant of those because it looked like a sexy minimal looking beast. This is the design people have been eyeing from XFX.
