I don't understand why a game based on one of the most successful AAA games of the year needs a Kickstarter campaign. The publisher is swimming in cash.

In most cases smaller companies pay for the license to produce a product. The parent company rarely create or finance these sorts of extended products themselves, they just sign off on it and get a cut. Steamforged Games created this, they just license the right to use IPs. Kickstarter is useful as a marketing tool.
This is very common in the board game industry (and imo a shitty practice). For a while now board games have been using kickstarter to simply sell their board game, not to actually gather funds for the game. Even super popular games will commonly start with kickstarter, some go to retail afterwards while some don't and essentially become premium exclusive items.
The reason I say it's shitty is because most of the reason for doing this is preying on FOMO that people have; these games tend to become absurdly hard and expensive to acquire unless you back the kickstarter, so it tempts people to pay for a game they're not even sure they'll play or not. There's also a tendency to just pile nice looking miniatures onto your game to both make your kickstarter page look nice and drive up the price of the board game, since you purchase mainly based on how it looks on the kickstarter page (you don't get to see much gameplay) and people are willing to pay these prices when all these factors combine (FOMO, miniature or component price, the argument that it's an exclusive or premium product).
It's not always so bad and some will go to retail afterwards and be accessible as a normal product, but this is definitely not rare for board games and kickstarter.

@@mossrocks8360 Honestly as FOMO-exploitative as it is, I much prefer that situation because at least a product is made. It beats the incalculable Kickstarters that are little more than dead-end scams.
