  • Hey everyone, back with a quick update on my 2020 Ford Ranger's fuel in oil problem. Took the truck to the dealership and they changed the oil and told me to come back after 3000 miles so they could do an oil consumption test. However, after 500 miles, my oil level is rising again.
    I also got my Blackstone results back and it showed to have 3% dilution.
    Hope this can get sorted out soon! I'll keep y'all posted.

    Cool truck, I love my 2020 Ranger XLT. I've got the same issue though, fuel is indeed in my oil. Thank you for posting your videos. I just sent off my oil analysis and will go to dealer when I get the results. I was gonna get a Tacoma, kind of regretting my decision to take a chance on the Ranger. Its an awesome truck, but they should've just put a normal V6 without turbo. Or a diesel would've been fine. It's like they said "Hey we're bringing back the Ranger, what engine should we put in it? ... We got all these left over engines for the Focus RS; lets slap those things into it".

    Thanks for the video update. If anyone suggests its the oil catch can that incorrect. I have a 2020 Ford Ranger 2wd, completely stock and have the same problem. Per the manual it states the vehicle should be on a level surface and wait 15 minutes. I checked it twice. My dipstick matches yours. This is before my truck hit 5k miles. Its first oil change. I have scheduled an appointment with the dealership in November. $159 for a diagnosis fee bites though.

    I'm having the same issue with mine. I'm at 17k miles and have had a catch can the whole time. I have had more fuel than oil in it every time I've emptied it. I just called my service manager at my dealership today. He's a friend of mine so hopefully we can get this figured out.

    My 2021 always had oil near the air intake. I would clean it off but when I would drive it check again there would be oil residue. I had mine in the shop 8 times in less than 4 months for a multitude of repairs(alignment 3 times,wipers stopped working,tailgate kept randomly falling off)finally just traded it in for the new frontier. Fun to drive, but too many issues.

    Had a 2017 Honda CR-V that did the same thing. Honda said 'normal'; we traded it off. Irritating as it is, it is not a problem isolated to Ford's 2.3 EcoBoost. Very well documented amongst Ford's V-6 EcoBoosts, and other manufacturers as well, like Honda.

    High pressure fuel pump leak?
    I feel like vent tubes and one way breathers and valves are backwards. Got compression tests?
    You know what, what about turbo blow off valves? Maybe when you let off the gas and coast the pressure is not bleeding off and a positive pressure is maintained in the manifold?
    Try that, I have a feeling that a positive pressure is maintained somewhere but why. I’d trace route that, maybe hour blow off valve isn’t working or something is backwards.

      I ran 10k miles on my oil in my 3.5 eco boost with 128k miles. Sent the oil to black stone and my fuel was 0.5% which is fine for such a long interval. NO, oil in fuel is NOT normal. If the oil level is rising that much due to fuel there is a major problem.

      @@tylerweaver0201 no, hpfp should not be open to the oil. Driven by the cam. Probably caused by fuel making it past the rings into the oil. Using new coated rings like moly coated rings instead of cast iron which don’t “break in” like the old cast rings, as well as lined cylinder sleeves make for slippery surfaces is my guess. We’ll have to wait and see exactly what it is. Honda had a hell of a time with this in their new 1.5 turbo motor that was in the 2017+ CR-V and 2016+ Civic.
      Change your oil often. Get the fuel out. Oil is cheap. Don’t go the full interval. 5k miles is best.

  • @Wade-lk4yo
    @Wade-lk4yo 3 года назад +1

    Mine and several others were WAY worse than that. Like drive it 50 miles and it was already an inch over the hole, bad. If you do a lot of in town driving and idling I'd almost argue that yours is just a normal result of direct injection, and there isn't really anything wrong. Plus Blackstone isn't the way to go for fuel dilution. They are great for finding contaminants in oil, but only a few companies actually measure the fuel dilution, including amsoil. Blackstone just estimates it based on other factors. I bet you take that truck on a 50 mile run at highway speeds then park it, your oil level will go right where it was. Cold weather doesn't help either. All just my 2 cents. I hope it is resolved for you, but sadly it is one of many downsides of DI. Ford does much better with DI than other brands like GM, and at least it doesn't lead to catastrophic engine failure in our vehicles.

    • @seanm3243
      @seanm3243 3 года назад

      "a normal result of direct injection"??? lmfao thats hilarious. So you just keep filling that crank case and call it good? Where do you think all that fuel is going over time. There shouldn't be that much fuel in the crankcase under any length of trips or conditions...

    • @Wade-lk4yo
      @Wade-lk4yo 3 года назад +2

      @@seanm3243 what I mean by that is that virtually all DI vehicles exhibit higher than normal fuel dilution in the oil by the very nature of their design. All of that extra pressure of the spray inside the cylinder walls naturally forces more fuel past the piston rings than a non DI engine. This is compounded by the extra pressure inside the cylinder caused by forced induction (turbocharging). You asked where all that fuel goes, well it goes into the crankcase, where normally the oil gets hot enough to evaporate the fuel, which then exits the crankcase via the PCV system. During short trips the oil doesn't get hot enough to do this, so the fuel builds up and raises the level of the crankcase. I think a major part of the problem for the Ranger is that it's robust cooling system makes it hard for the oil to get hot. Another problem that will make fuel dilution really bad is carbon buildup on the injection tips. Because the injector tip is the coolest thing in the cylinder by far, carbon likes to form on it. Eventually this reduces the injector's ability to atomize the fuel, which will cause some fuel to spray in liquid form, not burn, and wash down the cylinder wall past the piston rings. That is where using a good fuel injector cleaner every now and then can really help. I don't know why you mentioned "keep adding to the crankcase" because it's not like you are losing oil, so you might have to clarify what you meant.
      Bottom line, DI has some advantages I suppose, but overall it's a dumb technology widely adopted to appease federal fuel economy standards. That is what I mean by "normal" function of direct injection.

    • @seanm3243
      @seanm3243 3 года назад

      @@Wade-lk4yo Fair enough. As far as "adding to the crankcase" i mean the fuel that doesn't burn off. Can't be healthy for a case to be overfilled and ran all the time. I just think that in the world we are in today a vehicle should be able to handle any and all driving conditions. Most of my driving is to and from work and to the store etc all of which are within 15 minutes. Im sure this is the case for a ton of people. Crazy... On another note: What do you use to keep your system clean? I use seafoam on occasion but always open to get ideas and opinions from others.

    • @Wade-lk4yo
      @Wade-lk4yo 3 года назад

      @@seanm3243 Gotcha, yeah I think it's unfortunate. In the Ranger's case I think that it is bad because the cooling system is designed well to be able to keep everything cool while towing, so in cold weather, no load, short trips, the oil just doesn't get warm enough fast enough to burn off the gas as quickly as it comes in. That's just my theory though. You can look up the Honda CRV fuel dilution problem and that's pretty much the case for them. It's far more widespread in those though than with the Ranger. I think a solution could be covering part of your radiator or oil cooler during cold months. But that's just kind of ridiculous that you would have to do that. As for cleaning I use Lucas upper cylinder lubricant and injector cleaner. Seems to work well, but the tech who fixed my severe fuel dilution problem recommended a specific product I can't remember right now.
      I have noticed during really cold weeks here in Illinois the oil has climbed a little bit as seen in this video, but during warmer weeks it goes back down. In a weird sort of way I don't think that's too bad, because in cold weather the oil just automatically becomes less viscous due to the fuel, which helps the oil reach the top of the engine faster in a cold start... Then in warm weather it goes back to normal. I'm definitely stretching to say it's even kind of a good thing, because it's not, but just trying to see the silver lining haha.
      You'd be hard pressed to find a new vehicle other than Ford or Ram HD trucks that don't use DI. I don't think the Tundra does either, but I could be wrong. It's just the way of the future, for now...
