  • Betty Broderick first went on trial in October 1990 in San Diego for the murders of her ex-husband Dan and his second wife Linda. In both of the trials against her, Betty took the stand in her own defense. This collection of clips shows some of the things Betty testified to in the first trial in 1990 - painting her ex-husband as controlling and claiming she had no financial means after they divorced. Betty testified about the day of the murder saying she did not remember pulling the trigger and firing the five shots that resulted in the deaths of Dan and Linda. www.cbs8.com/a...

We're living in a civilized world where you should be able to get a legal divorce without getting murdered. Crazy Betty shot a bullseye killer aim and successfully accomplished her goal and desire. This creature belongs in prison - a danger to society.

Right, and we as women have to make a move and quit being gas-lighted. I know it's easier than it seems but I'm 40 and I cut men off who I can't trust. If I think it...that's probably whats happening.

@@MsSexyDiva4Lyfe But we must remember marriage is a commitment not an ownership. I agree with Your Mom, $16,000 dollars per month should have been enough for her to have moved on and let him go without having to commit bloody murder. People get divorced every day, although the pain of seeing another woman with your man and bearing him new children can almost be unbearable - it's a chess game.

Dan and Linda poured salt into the wound. She deserved a generous settlement and at least shared custody if not full. Dan took advantage of screwy laws like bifurcation and Epstein credits. He didn’t have to do that. If he had treated her decently to at least partially make up for dumping her, after she helped him achieve his success, he would very likely be alive today.

Your mom That is right. He is allowed to get out. My point is that you really shouldn’t marry a man that needs you to support him while he chases his dream because there is no guarantee you will both reap those benefits. She thought she would be rewarded for her sacrifices. You are mistaken regarding the settlement. She did not own the home and the monthly alimony was temporary. Dan could take her back to court at any time to change her living arrangements and reduce the support payment. It is very well known that Dan also hid assets so he wouldn’t have to share them with her. I am not defending her, but these are just some facts that led to her behavior.

@@jeannewantsjustice That is not what she got in the divorce settlement. Betty's biggest misjudgment was not getting a high powered divorce attorney to represent her. Dan was making $157,00 a month. Does $9,000 a month sound reasonable. Betty deserved a better settlement. Dan was greedy, he sold their martial home out from under her, Her car was in his name. As was everything.

    • @dinavienna
      @dinavienna 4 года назад +22

Your mom he was earning an average of 127,000 A MONTH. Most of us can’t imagine that - but 9,000 was not nearly fair. Also he played police officer and „fined“ her - 500, 1,000 USd for „offences“ like calling his house, showing up unannounced (mostly because the nanny called her because of issues with the kids), for insults etc - oftentimes resulting in negative sums (not only not paying her a dime from the 9,000 but claiming she owed him that month). That man abused and humiliated the woman he d not have been the hot shot lawyer without - and definitely paid for his sins.

The kids told her she can see them if she stopped harassing dan and Linda…did she stop…NO… guess her hate for dan was more than the love for her kids
She still traveled and went on expensive vacations and shopping spree’s with her then boyfriend
She drove her car into dans house with her kids inside smh shame shame
She tried tearing down his character to her friends and associates
Dans parents paid for his medical schooling…dan and Betty took out loans for law school(they were married) which dan paid back
The kids don’t believe their mom
Should be out of prison which they told the parole board( if her own kids think she should be in jail why do you think she should be out)
Kids were not brainwashed they seen the evil things their mom did to harass their father like send them (the kids) family pictures with there dad x’d out call him all kinds of names after they pleaded for her to stop
Now let’s talk about what Dan did
Dan got sick of being belittled and eventually got his money up and bought himself a young woman cheated on his wife and left her…the end

Many people don't understand how narcissists function. They saw him as the primary victim but sadly she was his victim for years. She probably did not even realize what she was dealing with at the time. Unless you know what to look out for they will utterly destroy you. She was a bit unstable already and he pushed her right over the edge and took pleasure in doing so. Those who have no empathy for her have never lived under the thumb of a malignant narc. Among the variants of narcissism, however, malignant narcissists are by far the most damaging. This is so sad. The way this couple treated each other is just so sad. There was emotional abuse going in both directions. It should be emphasized that emotional abuse is as harmful as physical abuse and can lead to life ending consequences. Trust your instincts and if you think something is wrong in your marriage, get help, if not with your spouse, at least for yourself.

Betty was a codependent married to a narcissist. This is picture book!
This woman was failed by the court system (a very broken system that for
some reason favors narcissists) and in an effort to protect herself and
the kids, was driven to desperation. I believe her when she says she
did not intend to kill anyone. The only thing she is not understanding
is that Dan wasn't putting her thru hell because of custody or because
he wanted to win. No, he wanted to annihilate her and make sure she
walks away with nothing but the shirt on her back. Narcissist split into
black and white thinking, meaning you are either one their side or if
not, than you are against them making you their enemy. Narcissists
cannot grasp the concept of object permanence and the relational object
constancy that develops from that later on.
Dan was a coward and far from a real man. I also believe that many
people cannot see what I and others see because they themselves have to
lived through it. Once you have, you will not only understand, but
recognize it immediately but that requires healing and a ton of self
    work.
I understand the toll narcissistic abuse takes on an individual's soul,
mind, spirit, and even body but sadly, many do not so the victim that
gets re-victimized by society, attorneys, reporters, and the court
    system.
Check out One Mom's Battle and read her story. Or better yet, google my
name. Nothing in my report regarding the incident is true but the truth
doesn't matter in a court of law anymore. You will get as much justice
as your money can buy. I was too sacred to speak up, so I covered for
what he did. I deeply regret that now. Mine did survived because I took
him to a fire station to get him help immediately but I am going thru
hell trying to divorce him 1.5 years after our incident. Dan reminds me
of my own soon-to-be ex-husband in regards to conduct and
characteristics and this hunger for money! I hung in there for 28 years!
Educate yourself on trauma bonding (the reason why Betty stayed),
narcissistic abuse, post divorce abuse, complex PTSD, codependency and
narcissism, attachment patterns, black and white thinking referred to as
splitting. Books like Splitting (Bill Eddy), or Why Does He Do That
(Lundy Bancroft), or In Sheep's Clothing (George Simon), or the
Emotional Destructive Marriage (Leslie Vernick), or Malignant Self Love:
Narcissism Revisited (Sam Vaknin) are excellent resources. In addition,
Ross Rosenberg's work on codependency, or self love deficiency as he
likes to term it, provides accurate and clear look into what and why.

yep.agreed. All the friends Betty thought she had also deserted her. They went on Dan's side because he was the one with the power and the money. She was suddenly alone and felt like every horrible name he ever called her. He and Linda ( that skank) got what they deserved) Sorry but they did, murder is wrong , except in self defense or ..when being driven crazy by pouring salt into the wound, just like you said. A person can only take so much and she gave up and did everything for her family. He paid her off and expected her to go away quietly, like she never existed in his life. He was a jerk off to end all jerk offs, selfish prick and his secretary was a pig gold digger who apparently never heard the saying if they do it with you , they will do it to you..

Somebody else would have come along who is prettier, or younger, or maybe more connected, or has greater status, etc. These people (narcissists) are very self-centered and do not care who gets hurt when they go after what they want and when they want...including hurting their own children whom they claim to love.

I read the book with corroborating statements & given the facts I read it's hard not to feel bad for betty & I get her pain ( I do not think it's ok in any way that she killed dan & linda) they married very young she was not ready for kids & did not know much about birth control & figured dan a med student knew what to do. She miscarried 5 kids 1 was still born one lived only to die before she left the hospital. She worked tons if jobs looked after the kids living in poverty sometimes with no heat or running water so that dan could go to medical then law school. Finally when he was making the big money after she helped put him through school by paying everything she thought now it was her turn for him to take care of her financially. Yet she still had the kids & the house while dan was out working on cases . Then he dumps her for a younger trophy , linda. Tell me u wouldnt be devastated bitter angry & possibly crazy. Betty gave up her youth to live a tough live waiting for the rewards for their family. Linda could not even type but was given her own office & a huge salary over people who were qualified & ran the office for years. Linda would not have been with dan if he waasnt a rich respected lawyer who became the bar president in California
Dan was chummy with the judge & betty got money in spousal support but had to use the money to pay the taxes & mortgage on a house that was in his name. So he could take her h ok me back at some point.
All their couple friends went with him the rich lawyer.
Finally when betty & dan married she was a stunning blonde & dan was very gawky & skinny with big glasses. When he got rich he got plastic surgery & matured into a handsome man . Betty was smart educated beautiful funny a great mom & wife. She was a great cook & class mom den mother soccer coach. The perfect wife. I have no respect for dan who never would have gotten to where he was without betty & dumped her & traded up. Linda was a homewrecker & opportunist. I could never take a man away from his family. If he courted me I'd say no u have a family.
Again killing dan & linda was wrong but I truly believe she had a break down.

Yea, that's why he was giving her 16K a month in alimony payments because he understood her sacrifices.
What most of you women fail to acknowledge is he no longer wanted her physically. And Dan had every right to move on with his life, no it wasn't fair but that's life it's a Bitch sometimes but you have to move on.
She refused to do that she was begging a man to stay with her that no longer wanted her or desired her. I've been in that situation and it is extremely hard to do because you're not there mentally anymore. So I understand Dan side an I empathize what Betty went through as well... But murder should have never been an option.

I know it's been a year but i just read your comment - the Brodericks were in a loveless marriage built on catholic tradition, position, status and money with both parties using the other for their own personal gain. Betty loved the country clubs, the ski trips, the family matching sweaters - not the man. Her anger along with her over-the-top reactions was about her loosing status and perks - not Dan. She spent most of the marriage hurling verbal assaults at him ('faggot' was one of her faves). So if you're gonna dish the crap out you better be prepared when it's your turn to take it. just read up on her cold and distant parents who never showed up during any trials for a clearer picture.

The reason Betty has no remorse is because she believes Dan & his new wife deserved this. Why is the notion that she has no remorse so difficult to understand here. I know people would like to believe that she should, however she doesn't. Also, if she never feels remorse for what she did, it does not mean for sure that she would ever harm anyone again.

Tons of evidence at trial that she didn’t want custody of her kids, even exploded at a lawyer for filing motions to get them. Her “destitute” definition doesn’t include that Dan was paying her 9,000 a month before he was ever ruled to pay her anything. He paid the mortgage, her vehicle insurances, health insurance. Why kill him when she did? Because it was finally over, money settlement, custody was settled and he married Linda. There would be no excuse or reason anymore to ever contact him and that’s what she realized, the delays that were caused by HER was over and done
