Yup, because one day he might get bored and find a younger woman. You have to be independent because no marriage is guaranteed. No matter how happy a couple is there is always a threat something could happen to end the marriage.

She may have been the breadwinner while he studied, but lets not forget the luxury lifestyle she had in return and the fact that the years of luxury outnumbered the years of hardship. Relationships end, doesnt mean that 5 years later you still obsess over the ex and steal your daughters keys to go 'talk' to your ex and the new partner at 5am in THEIR bedroom. And to say to your own kid you wish they hadn't been born? Her kids meant so much to her yet she dumped them 2 at a time on their dads doorstep. Mother of the year! I've been the victim of sustained systematic mental & physical abuse and torture, but never would I dump my kids on someones doorstep, nor would I kill my ex and the new partner. Key is to let go. THEN come defend the killer on a public forum. Oh and also please do watch the full trial because you will see exactly 'how much' she was rolling in money post divorce, which even in todays day and age is a fortune but for her was not enough because she wanted money AND Dan as 'she is the only one allowed to call herself Mrs Broderick'. (Supposedly she was 'abused' but at the same time wanted her 'abuser' to remain only hers.. go ask any abuse victim, we do everything in our power to stay away from our abusers). Furthermore; You will see that the voluntary payments she recieved were for her own spending and Dan continued to pay the mortgage, taxes AND her ridiculous credit card bills each month and was even willing to pay for her to take the kids on holidays when it was her turn to have them, but nooooo, the kids messed with her plans to go away with her boyfriend (for which she had money to PAY FOR the whole holiday) and she refused the money, but then tried using it as 'evidence' at trial and got destroyed with ACTUAL evidence. And the audacity to say that highly accredited judges were lying only for her to be proven wrong again with actual proof. Only liar throughout the trial was Betty, you shall see for yourself how she was impeached on every lie and presented with evidence that only then made her shed crocodile tears. A murderer that sits through their trial smiling, lies through her teeth then starts crying when presented with evidence contrary to her testimony, and goes back to sneering at the prosecution in milliseconds of her 'crying' is evidence to the medical evidence and diagnosis presented by Dr Dietz which completely destroys her lies and defence that she was 'abused' with ACTUAL medical reasoning and a breakdown of the evidence from HER letters and HER calls and HER testimonies to friends, family, lawyers, doctors and her own testimony. Oh and do watch the part where her fellow inmate testifies to her true nature too, its VERY interesting. And maybe the part where the defence's own witnesses slip up and the defence lawyer has hissy fits just like Betty does when they can see that she won't get away with murder like she told plenty of people she would! P.s google Dr Dietz, you'll see exactly how accredited he is and how honest he is, to the point that even if bribed he doesn't give fake testimony, and exactly whom he has helped the country put away. (By looks of it you'll defend those killers too seeing as you seem to think murderers are the victims) Fact is Betty was and remains a narcissist and anyone that defends a killer gives reason for concern which I hope the authorities look into as there's plenty online that think murderers deserve freedom. She certainly did and I think she should be set free. Yes she killed 2 people but those 2 people drove her to it by treating her terribly and then Dan screwed her over in the divorce. It made her mind snap, she was put through hell! Dan and Linda were both at least partly responsible for their own deaths. You can't treat someone the way they treated her and not expect something to happen. Betty's mind had become fragile, she was devastated and lost and hurting so badly. They caused her to snap.

She can't be called as a materialistic. If she was then she didn't even marry Dan, he was nothing before, she is just so much in love with him and yet Dan push her beyond limit.

Wasn’t Betty deserving of a coat? Those women on the stand weren’t her friends. They were nasty jealous women. Why didn’t they get the mothers of all the kids up there whom Betty watched over the years? Dan didn’t have to be so nasty to Betty. She sacrificed to help put him through school, had his kids & advised him to set up his own law practice which is where he started making big bucks. Dan married the woman he wanted. Why couldn’t he have just been happy & leave Betty alone? He taunted and tormented her, knowing how fragile she had become. Much of the onus of what happened was his fault.

It’s where the narcissist brings other people into your relationship, engineering a rivalry, usually to gain some kind of control or power over you. The third person may be someone you know - maybe a sibling. But often, the third person will be someone you don’t know well, or even at all - perhaps someone from their past. This technique isn’t unique to narcissists - although triangulation and narcissism often go hand-in-hand. She was also on the same spectrum. It takes two to tango. Dan and his lover are not innocent in all of this. Narcs know exactly which buttons to push to trigger a volatile response. They take great joy in being able to get you to lose your temper and then use it against you. You are mad, unstable. Look everyone I have to put up with this awful women. She may have been a difficult women but I am sure he was not a saint either. Her kids were very young at the time and in no way mature enough to understand all the innuendos and gaslighting. @@haintedhouse3052 Because the only ones who know everything that's happening inside a marriage and a divorce are the (ex-)partners. Others can only look at it from the outside. And in this case also what their father did to their mother was much less visible for the children than the other way around. For example when Betty dressed herself up and brought cake to Dan's office on his birthday, but he had left with the secretary, which confirmed her suspicion. If Betty hadn't talked about it in public, the children wouldn't have known their father did this, cause he surely wouldn't have told his children. I'm an average woman and I didn't tell my children anything negative about their father or our marriage after the divorce. That's what parents do when they love their children and don't want to negatively influence their children's feelings about the other parent. I'm not American, as you can tell from my English, so I have no clue who miss Cleo is. My guess is that it isn't positive.
She murdered her FATHER. NOTHING will ever bring him back into his children's lives. Family holidays, get togethers, his grandchildren, growing old. All things Dan and his children will never experience because of one unbalanced woman's refusal to just turn around, let go of her past and move on with her children. You could never...but thank God Kim can.

Betty felt free after she killed them. All the pain, everything gone. I understand what Betty did. Not saying it’s right or wrong but men can drive you to murder. Dan was no good. He was cold, heartless, narcissistic, dirty man, typical attorney. He killed Betty inside, she dedicated her life to him. But Betty should’ve seen it coming that he would cheat. Was Linda even the first? But I think Betty should’ve waited for karma it would’ve happen. Dan would’ve gotten bored with Linda after a few years and cheated on her with a younger blonde. That’s the type of man he was. Successful men cheat cause they feel they can cause they’re successful so they feel they can any woman, not just stay with one. Women like Linda who are mistresses, don’t think they will get there’s. If Betty would’ve step back and left karma take its course Linda would’ve gotten cheated on. I think also both dan and Betty wasn’t thinking of the kids, just trying to see who can outdo who. Like in most divorce cases. They should’ve just said let’s just get along for the sake of the kids, if we can’t, let’s just set a financial deal and not deal with each other so at least the kids aren’t hurt. But no they wanted to continue hurting one another. I learned from this case, never be too dependent on a man, never dedicated your life completely to one, cause they can walk or cheat anytime, no matter if you are the perfect wife and mother. I think women understand now the importance of having your own money and success. Betty was brought up in a time where a woman was suppose to be just a wife and mother, cook, clean, please your man, there’s no you after you marry. So her identity was based on her husband and children, when that was gone, she lost it. She didn’t know who she was outside of her husband and children, they were her normal.
So tired of hearing the repetitive sentiment lamenting Betty's sacrifices. She "dedicated her life to Dan" for one reason: her own personal financial gain. Before you say I'm full of it, take Dr. Park Dietz - an expert witness in high profile cases like John Hinckley and Robert Bardo (Rebecca Schaeffer). Dietz testified that Betty was neither insane or mentally ill, but suffers from two personality disorders which he labeled narcissistic and histrionic and said that unlike an insane or mentally ill person, she controls the disorder "the disorder is not controlling her." So much for "Dan drove her crazy". She was materialistic and hungry for money so lets bring her down from the cross a notch.

Had Dan been kinder, more honest, and more empathetic with her she probably would've still been depressed and had issues but there wouldn't have been a double homicide. NOT removing Betty from accountability, but Dan was CLEARLY the more emotionally, financially, and educationally stable one in this situation thus he had more power and should've used it more responsibly. I definitely think she was a house full of gasoline, but Dan continually struck the match until the house caught on fire, exploded, and killed him.
The narcissist was definitely the dad, to whom she devoted her life, gave him 4 children, worked while he studied and once he became a lawyer, decided to dump her for the younger secretary. People use narcissist very lightly these days without knowing the real meaning to the word.

Destroyed 2 marriages. Nine years later I'm happily remarried to a man that will never do to me what the ex did.
The BeachDiva what’s great about the miniseries is they highlight that women often respond to these situations by committing suicide. She saw the outlet that is more often taken by spurned men and committed homicide. You reap what you sow on both parts.

She was obviously a nightmare to live with, no wonder Dan wanted to leaver her. She received a $16,000 per month settlement back in 1989. That is an absolute fortune. Yet it is still not enough. She deserves to rot in prison and I hope she never gets out.

My husband told me I was,"old, fat, and boring", when he walked out on me a few months ago so that he could pursue a younger woman and spoil (yet neglect) our children. I guess this often happens when a woman turns 50 and It reminded me of this case. He also plans to retire soon and live lavishly on his pension and assets while I struggle along to keep a roof over my head. Sometimes I wish he had married Betty instead of me.
I'm sorry you have to deal with this I've never been in that position but I did have a very nasty divorce. He tried everything to screw me and in the end it backfired on him. I grew up knowing what a man can and will do to a woman so I kept EVERYTHING. I had a safety deposit box with every receipt and deposits I had made over the years to show he had nothing when we got married. I had put everything into our home. Paid off his debt to get approved for the mortgage. You name it. I kept it. And in the end he had been caught lying so much the judge advised him he was going to be charged with perjury if it happened again. I ended up getting half of the assets. Just as I had always asked for. I tried to be fair the entire time but he dragged it out so it cost him almost 50k for his lawyer. He told me he was going to bury me and my son in a shallow ditch and that was where it ended.
Betty was diagnosed by 2 top psychiatrists (including her own) as having Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Just read her letters to her own children before the murders and the letters 20 years after the murder. She feels zero guilt for what she did to her own children. She says she is the ONLY victim not her kids. She never cared about what her own behavior did to her kids. Was Dan perfect? No. I’m sure he had narcissistic traits. The difference? She was engaging in insane behaviors for years at the expense of her children. She complained that 16,000 a month (35,000 in 2020) would make her poor (that’s 400,000 a year and she lived in a mansion on the ocean at the time of the murder.) Bettys severe personality disorder destroyed her children’s life. To this day she has zero insight at her parole hearings.
LM I very much disagree. Betty was diagnosed as having 2 severe cluster B personality disorders. You do not develop a personality disorder (in her case 2 and severe) well into adulthood. No mental health professional would ever say that. Personality disorders start forming in early adolescence. Bettys own children have spoken openly about bettys behavior going back to their earliest memories in childhood and it’s insane. Even more interesting is a newspaper interview done a few years before the murders. A local newspaper interviewed both Dan and Betty for a story as their divorce was making news. Dan was able to say “there were definitely times where I could’ve been a better husband and father.” He notes that “Although it seemed from the beginning of my marriage that Betty was not often happy with me, we had good times and bad times.” Why is that important? Dan can see his flaws and has a balanced realistic view. Betty on the other hand insisted in the interview that their marriage was storybook perfect until Dan cheated (her own children heavily dispute this as well) and that she did absolutely nothing wrong in the marriage. Bettys black and white portrayal, her inability to acknowledge any fault or contribution of her own is VERY indicative of a severe personality disorder. Dans not perfect but Betty is NOT a victim.

I've always felt sympathy for Betty. Unless you have been cheated on and used to this extent, you have no idea how emotionally crushing it can be. If she had been in her right mind she would have gotten divorced and gone on with her life. Linda and Dan drove her out of her mind.
I have been cheated on and in the “gaslighting” sense as the show depicts. As horrible as it was I maintained my self-respect and dignity and didn’t make scenes or kill anyone or scream or yell. All that does is make the person acting out look ridiculous.
She wasn't a narcissist, she was a mom who tried EVERYTHING for the success of her family, and she conceived it, Dan made both of his careers off of her, they had kids together and she sacrificed everything for them to be a happy family. If she's being accused of being materialistic so her whole family. Dan cheated on her for 3 years before he came upfront with her, even though she asked him several times and she was always turned down by the typical phrases "you are crazy" , "it's your imagination", and she started feeling like maybe she was indeed too paranoid about it, she went and seek for physiological help, because she wanted to help their relationship. He tricked her mind for years! And once their divorce trial was over, the judge ruled that she owed him 175,000 and on top of that he had custody of all four kids. Keep in mind the dad had a very high political status here in SD, he was friends with very important people, lawyers, doctors and politicians. This made the trial harder for Betty. No wonder why she was so out of rage to kill them.
and the $16k per month would end if she remarried (according to American Justice). Dan was making $140,000 per month. I gave an example on a previous comment... but anyway, if she remarried around 2 years after the divorce, she would of only got around $350,000. The divorce judge wasn't fair. Dan can move on... make millions but if Betty would of, she would of been cut off.

Betty worked hard to help put him through university . She put her body through 4 full pregnancies. It pays off and eventually everything falls into place. She then discovers after 13/14 years of married life and 4 full pregnancies, she has been traded in for a younger woman who is only 21. A woman who did not work to help him succeed or put her body through 4, full term pregnancies, to produce their children. Betty did all that, and for her efforts, she is lied to and then dumped for a much younger woman. So tragic on so many levels.

I don't blame Betty for being so hurt and angry, that was her right for what Dan had done to her. But what she should have done was asked for a little more than reasonable payout in the divorce and rebuilt the next part of her life. She was a powerful, savvy woman in her own right and its limitless as to what she could have become on her own. She had 4 kids that would have been a big part of her life forever and I'm sure she would have eventually found love again with someone special. Its just sad she didn't give herself that opportunity. Sometimes when the heartbreak is just too much to take, it does something to the mind as well and a tragedy like this is the result.

I can’t help but feel Betty snapped because of the way Dan and Linda antagonized her. While what she did was wrong, very wrong, they also contributed to what ultimately occurred. The entire story is tragic for everyone involved.
Rosie Callender it’s not only the fact that he cheated but it was his manipulation of the situation from early in their relationship. He was a typical narcissistic egomaniac that was constantly controlling her throughout the marriage. She came from a well to do family into a relationship where he demanded that she figure out a way for her to support the family. He was off “studying” in school twice and when he was home he wasn’t helping with the children or the household or financial. She was the dutiful wife not complaining while raising the children and keeping everyone together. She was extremely patient with him and she deserved the fruits of their labor. But he decided to trade her in for a newer model. I completely understand her... behind every successful man is his wife.

Dan didn't destroy her, she destroyed herself with her seething jealousy for the new wife and for the lifestyle she wanted. Linda was a homewrecker and many women consider her a whore because she knowingly slept with a married man, but the fault lies with DAN too. I have gone through the torture of multiple womanizing of my husband and i'm telling you.It's really hell.I suffered from depression,however i didnt let him to completely ruin my life.I am a working woman and i also served as a stronghold to my only son instead of corrupting his mind.That's the role i have to play for the present,to notto show my son how i am damaged deep inside but a strong woman who could move on and continue as an inspiration to him in a positive way.

Simply put, Dan would never have gotten to where he was without Betty. He could have given her a fair settlement but he was far too greedy to do that, and he seemed to enjoy tormenting her instead.
Simply put: You obviously don't know ANY of that, and you're talking outta your tuchus. Dan had already nearly completed med. school before even meeting Betty; and he gave her a $650,000 mansion, a lump sum, & $16,000 per month in their divorce. The "greedy tormentor" (and murderer!) was ALL Betty.
It's very sad Betty didn't seek help after she burned those clothing items. Her life may have turned out differently. My mom and her side of the family disowned me because I "had the nerve to" keep.lovin my dad ..... And my step mom. I also admitted that my biological mom wasn't right the way she dealt with her life after my dad left. ;/ I FEEL FOR THOSE KIDS.
I am shocked to see how many people agree with Betty's actions. You need to get some help, I mean that for your own good. Dan definitely did many mean things to Betty and the kids, the worst part being the lack of honesty about his ongoing affair. He became a major dick and there is no denying it. I am sure Betty suffered tremendously and no person should go through that type of pain, especially after everything she did for her family. With that being said, it does not nor will it ever justify her actions. She became toxic with her friends, acquaintances, even her own kids and dragged them all into an endless cycle of drama. She could have followed the judge's orders and she would probably be doing just fine now, living with her kids, maybe even remarrying. Instead, she decided to go psycho on her husband and Linda. The destruction of property, the vandalizing, the constant hateful voice messages, disobeying a restraining order and finally, the murders. Need I say more? The judge had awarded her a 28k lump sum + 16k per month. That is a VERY comfortable amount to live with. He even gave her visitation rights. A couple of months of good behavior on her part and she would have eventually earned custody. I am just baffled that such a smart woman made such poor choices, especially since they were only causing everyone (including herself) more pain. I feel sorry for the suffering she went through, but more than anything I feel sorry for the kids. I have no sympathy for what she did to her husband and his wife. It was wrong and no amount of pain warrants that type of behavior. I have been living with OCD, anxiety, panic disorder, depression and ADHD for decades. I come from a home of domestic violence. I battle with my mind every day, but still, that never gives me the right to take someone else's life. Accept the situation or remove yourself from it. Everything else is madness.
You never know who you marry until you are divorcing them. If you had invested so much as Betty did in your spouse, you would understand. Betty's story is a life lesson for people entering into relationships.
I went through a lot of similar things with my ex . I gave all I had ,he took all I had and then was making sure that I wouldn't even have a home or car if he died or we divorced. I was angry for four years or more ,I wished him dead, I had to pay off tens of thousands of debt that the judge ordered him to pay . The judge ordered me to pay stuff that was in his name and him to pay stuff that was in my name . I did what I was ordered to do .He didn't . Judges are not always fair lots of them are in the good old boys club!

They only think they do because they think they should not have to pay child support and think that they shouldn't have to equitably divide assets, not to mention share their retirement funds. They think they should just be able to leave and that's that, after demanding that their wife stay home with the kids, or demanding that she only work part time.
And, if true, insisting she continue to have babies. In the series they approached a doctor to have her tubes untied. If she did this after he moved out that alone is evidence of gaslighting and manipulation. He led her down a stray path whilst he hid assets from her. She did deserve more for supporting him through both med and law school. She invested in his future for the betterment of him herself, and the children. She deserved far more than $9000/month eapecially when he was earning over $125,000/month. His degrees were hers also. He kept her as the cook, cleaner, breader and baby sitter and then got tired of her. Had he played fair, not manipulated everything against her she could have eventually moved on. At the very least he would not have driven her beyond her breaking point. He made her feel worthless and as though her entire life with him was all a lie. He didn't deserve to die and least of all did his new wife. But he pulled the trigger, not Betty.

Dan admitted to Betty that she had been right all along about his cheating with Linda. She was a control freak who was money hungry and used her kids as pawns. She was not the perfect wife and mother that she wants everyone to believe, nor is she a victim. Betty was abusive physically and mentally. Dan knew which buttons to push that made Betty go nuts. He and Linda played with fire and got burned.

She apparently was a drug addict also. Good for Dan to disinherit her. It speaks volumes... The daughter said her mother out of the blue sounds like she hated her guts. Narcissists can't take blame for anything and are not accountable. That is why Betty will Never get out of prison. She shows no remorse. I've been wondering, how is it that Betty received such a lopsided divorce settlement in California which is supposed to be community property and all assets that were obtained after they married should have been split down the middle including Dan's business? Lee , Since Dan was a divorce lawyer and he knew every lawyer in Southern California, he screwed Betty over. She did not have a good lawyer who would fight for her. Plus in her confused state, she did not realize this. Everything they owned, house, cars, bank accounts were in Dan’s name. So I don’t condone Betty murdering Dan and Linda, but with Betty’s mental state and the fact that she was a narcissist, she was a ticking time bomb.

Betty lost custody of her kids because she dropped them off one by one at Dan’s home. She used them as pawns in her vendetta, and it backfired. Dan’s affair is indefensible, but not deserving of the death penalty that Betty imposed on Dan & Linda.

Furthermore; You will see that the voluntary payments she recieved were for her own spending and Dan continued to pay the mortgage, taxes AND her ridiculous credit card bills each month and was even willing to pay for her to take the kids on holidays when it was her turn to have them, but nooooo, the kids messed with her plans to go away with her boyfriend (for which she had money to PAY FOR the whole holiday) and she refused the money, but then tried using it as 'evidence' at trial and got destroyed with ACTUAL evidence.
And the audacity to say that highly accredited judges were lying only for her to be proven wrong again with actual proof.
Only liar throughout the trial was Betty, you shall see for yourself how she was impeached on every lie and presented with evidence that only then made her shed crocodile tears.
A murderer that sits through their trial smiling, lies through her teeth then starts crying when presented with evidence contrary to her testimony, and goes back to sneering at the prosecution in milliseconds of her 'crying' is evidence to the medical evidence and diagnosis presented by Dr Dietz which completely destroys her lies and defence that she was 'abused' with ACTUAL medical reasoning and a breakdown of the evidence from HER letters and HER calls and HER testimonies to friends, family, lawyers, doctors and her own testimony.
Oh and do watch the part where her fellow inmate testifies to her true nature too, its VERY interesting. And maybe the part where the defence's own witnesses slip up and the defence lawyer has hissy fits just like Betty does when they can see that she won't get away with murder like she told plenty of people she would!
P.s google Dr Dietz, you'll see exactly how accredited he is and how honest he is, to the point that even if bribed he doesn't give fake testimony, and exactly whom he has helped the country put away. (By looks of it you'll defend those killers too seeing as you seem to think murderers are the victims)
Fact is Betty was and remains a narcissist and anyone that defends a killer gives reason for concern which I hope the authorities look into as there's plenty online that think murderers deserve freedom.

She certainly did and I think she should be set free. Yes she killed 2 people but those 2 people drove her to it by treating her terribly and then Dan screwed her over in the divorce. It made her mind snap, she was put through hell! Dan and Linda were both at least partly responsible for their own deaths. You can't treat someone the way they treated her and not expect something to happen. Betty's mind had become fragile, she was devastated and lost and hurting so badly. They caused her to snap.

Looks like Dan may have been a very good triangulator. It’s where the narcissist brings other people into your relationship, engineering a rivalry, usually to gain some kind of control or power over you. The third person may be someone you know - maybe a sibling. But often, the third person will be someone you don’t know well, or even at all - perhaps someone from their past. This technique isn’t unique to narcissists - although triangulation and narcissism often go hand-in-hand. She was also on the same spectrum.
It takes two to tango. Dan and his lover are not innocent in all of this. Narcs know exactly which buttons to push to trigger a volatile response. They take great joy in being able to get you to lose your temper and then use it against you. You are mad, unstable. Look everyone I have to put up with this awful women. She may have been a difficult women but I am sure he was not a saint either. Her kids were very young at the time and in no way mature enough to understand all the innuendos and gaslighting. @@haintedhouse3052 Because the only ones who know everything that's happening inside a marriage and a divorce are the (ex-)partners. Others can only look at it from the outside. And in this case also what their father did to their mother was much less visible for the children than the other way around. For example when Betty dressed herself up and brought cake to Dan's office on his birthday, but he had left with the secretary, which confirmed her suspicion. If Betty hadn't talked about it in public, the children wouldn't have known their father did this, cause he surely wouldn't have told his children. I'm an average woman and I didn't tell my children anything negative about their father or our marriage after the divorce. That's what parents do when they love their children and don't want to negatively influence their children's feelings about the other parent.

He was cold, heartless, narcissistic, dirty man, typical attorney. He killed Betty inside, she dedicated her life to him. But Betty should’ve seen it coming that he would cheat. Was Linda even the first? But I think Betty should’ve waited for karma it would’ve happen. Dan would’ve gotten bored with Linda after a few years and cheated on her with a younger blonde. That’s the type of man he was. Successful men cheat cause they feel they can cause they’re successful so they feel they can any woman, not just stay with one. Women like Linda who are mistresses, don’t think they will get there’s. If Betty would’ve step back and left karma take its course Linda would’ve gotten cheated on.
I think also both dan and Betty wasn’t thinking of the kids, just trying to see who can outdo who. Like in most divorce cases. They should’ve just said let’s just get along for the sake of the kids, if we can’t, let’s just set a financial deal and not deal with each other so at least the kids aren’t hurt. But no they wanted to continue hurting one another.
I learned from this case, never be too dependent on a man, never dedicated your life completely to one, cause they can walk or cheat anytime, no matter if you are the perfect wife and mother. I think women understand now the importance of having your own money and success. Betty was brought up in a time where a woman was suppose to be just a wife and mother, cook, clean, please your man, there’s no you after you marry. So her identity was based on her husband and children, when that was gone, she lost it. She didn’t know who she was outside of her husband and children, they were her normal.
So tired of hearing the repetitive sentiment lamenting Betty's sacrifices. She "dedicated her life to Dan" for one reason: her own personal financial gain. Before you say I'm full of it, take Dr. Park Dietz - an expert witness in high profile cases like John Hinckley and Robert Bardo (Rebecca Schaeffer). Dietz testified that Betty was neither insane or mentally ill, but suffers from two personality disorders which he labeled narcissistic and histrionic and said that unlike an insane or mentally ill person, she controls the disorder "the disorder is not controlling her."
So much for "Dan drove her crazy". She was materialistic and hungry for money so lets bring her down from the cross a notch.

I'm sorry you have to deal with this I've never been in that position but I did have a very nasty divorce. He tried everything to screw me and in the end it backfired on him. I grew up knowing what a man can and will do to a woman so I kept EVERYTHING.
I had a safety deposit box with every receipt and deposits I had made over the years to show he had nothing when we got married. I had put everything into our home. Paid off his debt to get approved for the mortgage. You name it. I kept it. And in the end he had been caught lying so much the judge advised him he was going to be charged with perjury if it happened again. I ended up getting half of the assets. Just as I had always asked for. I tried to be fair the entire time but he dragged it out so it cost him almost 50k for his lawyer. He told me he was going to bury me and my son in a shallow ditch and that was where it ended.
Betty was only 35 or 36 when he left. She had a huge part of her life left to live.

Betty was diagnosed by 2 top psychiatrists (including her own) as having Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Just read her letters to her own children before the murders and the letters 20 years after the murder. She feels zero guilt for what she did to her own children. She says she is the ONLY victim not her kids. She never cared about what her own behavior did to her kids. Was Dan perfect? No. I’m sure he had narcissistic traits. The difference? She was engaging in insane behaviors for years at the expense of her children. She complained that 16,000 a month (35,000 in 2020) would make her poor (that’s 400,000 a year and she lived in a mansion on the ocean at the time of the murder.) Bettys severe personality disorder destroyed her children’s life. To this day she has zero insight at her parole hearings.

LM I very much disagree. Betty was diagnosed as having 2 severe cluster B personality disorders. You do not develop a personality disorder (in her case 2 and severe) well into adulthood. No mental health professional would ever say that. Personality disorders start forming in early adolescence. Bettys own children have spoken openly about bettys behavior going back to their earliest memories in childhood and it’s insane. Even more interesting is a newspaper interview done a few years before the murders. A local newspaper interviewed both Dan and Betty for a story as their divorce was making news. Dan was able to say “there were definitely times where I could’ve been a better husband and father.” He notes that “Although it seemed from the beginning of my marriage that Betty was not often happy with me, we had good times and bad times.” Why is that important? Dan can see his flaws and has a balanced realistic view. Betty on the other hand insisted in the interview that their marriage was storybook perfect until Dan cheated (her own children heavily dispute this as well) and that she did absolutely nothing wrong in the marriage. Bettys black and white portrayal, her inability to acknowledge any fault or contribution of her own is VERY indicative of a severe personality disorder. Dans not perfect but Betty is NOT a victim.

I have been cheated on and in the “gaslighting” sense as the show depicts. As horrible as it was I maintained my self-respect and dignity and didn’t make scenes or kill anyone or scream or yell. All that does is make the person acting out look ridiculous.

She wasn't a narcissist, she was a mom who tried EVERYTHING for the success of her family, and she conceived it, Dan made both of his careers off of her, they had kids together and she sacrificed everything for them to be a happy family. If she's being accused of being materialistic so her whole family. Dan cheated on her for 3 years before he came upfront with her, even though she asked him several times and she was always turned down by the typical phrases "you are crazy" , "it's your imagination", and she started feeling like maybe she was indeed too paranoid about it, she went and seek for physiological help, because she wanted to help their relationship. He tricked her mind for years! And once their divorce trial was over, the judge ruled that she owed him 175,000 and on top of that he had custody of all four kids.
Keep in mind the dad had a very high political status here in SD, he was friends with very important people, lawyers, doctors and politicians. This made the trial harder for Betty. No wonder why she was so out of rage to kill them.
and the $16k per month would end if she remarried (according to American Justice). Dan was making $140,000 per month. I gave an example on a previous comment... but anyway, if she remarried around 2 years after the divorce, she would of only got around $350,000. The divorce judge wasn't fair. Dan can move on... make millions but if Betty would of, she would of been cut off.

I don't blame Betty for being so hurt and angry, that was her right for what Dan had done to her. But what she should have done was asked for a little more than reasonable payout in the divorce and rebuilt the next part of her life. She was a powerful, savvy woman in her own right and its limitless as to what she could have become on her own. She had 4 kids that would have been a big part of her life forever and I'm sure she would have eventually found love again with someone special. Its just sad she didn't give herself that opportunity. He was a typical narcissistic egomaniac that was constantly controlling her throughout the marriage. She came from a well to do family into a relationship where he demanded that she figure out a way for her to support the family. He was off “studying” in school twice and when he was home he wasn’t helping with the children or the household or financial. She was the dutiful wife not complaining while raising the children and keeping everyone together. She was extremely patient with him and she deserved the fruits of their labor. But he decided to trade her in for a newer model. I completely understand her... behind every successful man is his wife.

I am shocked to see how many people agree with Betty's actions. You need to get some help, I mean that for your own good. Dan definitely did many mean things to Betty and the kids, the worst part being the lack of honesty about his ongoing affair. He became a major dick and there is no denying it. I am sure Betty suffered tremendously and no person should go through that type of pain, especially after everything she did for her family.
With that being said, it does not nor will it ever justify her actions. She became toxic with her friends, acquaintances, even her own kids and dragged them all into an endless cycle of drama. She could have followed the judge's orders and she would probably be doing just fine now, living with her kids, maybe even remarrying.
Instead, she decided to go psycho on her husband and Linda. The destruction of property, the vandalizing, the constant hateful voice messages, disobeying a restraining order and finally, the murders. Need I say more? The judge had awarded her a 28k lump sum + 16k per month. That is a VERY comfortable amount to live with. He even gave her visitation rights. A couple of months of good behavior on her part and she would have eventually earned custody.
I am just baffled that such a smart woman made such poor choices, especially since they were only causing everyone (including herself) more pain. I feel sorry for the suffering she went through, but more than anything I feel sorry for the kids. I have no sympathy for what she did to her husband and his wife. It was wrong and no amount of pain warrants that type of behavior.
I have been living with OCD, anxiety, panic disorder, depression and ADHD for decades. I come from a home of domestic violence. I battle with my mind every day, but still, that never gives me the right to take someone else's life. Accept the situation or remove yourself from it. Everything else is madness.

I went through a lot of similar things with my ex . I gave all I had ,he took all I had and then was making sure that I wouldn't even have a home or car if he died or we divorced. I was angry for four years or more ,I wished him dead, I had to pay off tens of thousands of debt that the judge ordered him to pay . The judge ordered me to pay stuff that was in his name and him to pay stuff that was in my name . I did what I was ordered to do .He didn't . Judges are not always fair lots of them are in the good old boys club!

And, if true, insisting she continue to have babies. In the series they approached a doctor to have her tubes untied. If she did this after he moved out that alone is evidence of gaslighting and manipulation. He led her down a stray path whilst he hid assets from her. She did deserve more for supporting him through both med and law school. She invested in his future for the betterment of him herself, and the children. She deserved far more than $9000/month eapecially when he was earning over $125,000/month. His degrees were hers also. He kept her as the cook, cleaner, breader and baby sitter and then got tired of her. Had he played fair, not manipulated everything against her she could have eventually moved on. At the very least he would not have driven her beyond her breaking point. He made her feel worthless and as though her entire life with him was all a lie. He didn't deserve to die and least of all did his new wife. But he pulled the trigger, not Betty.

I've been wondering, how is it that Betty received such a lopsided divorce settlement in California which is supposed to be community property and all assets that were obtained after they married should have been split down the middle including Dan's business? I googled when CA became a community property state and it was 1850.

Oh grow up. Virtually everyone who knew her said she was selfish, materialistic and a narcissist. Her marriage with him was over years before it actually officially ended. Everyone in her house said she abused him, not the other way around. Even 'friends' said she was a whack job. She didn't deserve any form of respect, she had no respect for anyone but herself to begin with.
Also, she abandoned her children and left them with him. Her daughters say this. They said she expected him to be upset about it, but was upset that he and the kids liked the living arrangements. Which again proves what a liar she was.

I knew she took care of me when I was little with my siblings which is hard w/o help. Betty lost custody of her kids because she dropped them off one by one at Dan’s home. She used them as pawns in her vendetta, and it backfired. Dan’s affair is indefensible, but not deserving of the death penalty that Betty imposed on Dan & Linda.
She wasn't pawning her children off. She was trying to get her husband to see what it's like to raise the kids on his own. Dan was already suing her for full custody to avoid paying child support.
Dan sought full custody to shield his kids from a clearly mentally/emotionally unstable woman. She was diagnosed with severe personality disorders.
