- RUclipsrs are often searching for the perfect camera, when there are far more important things to discover. What is the best lens for making youtube videos? What's the perfect focal length? They all have a very different look and feel. Let's talk about whether you should go ultra wide or telephoto, why so many youtubers choose 24mm, and what the perfect focal length is, the pros and cons of each. It's very different when filming yourself.
Testing out several different systems, Fuji XT4 vs Panasonic G9, Olympus EM1 III.

My mums 75 years old but she’s waiting for you big boy 😍
Kasey do video on how to correct fisheye in premiere, could be good content :)
Can't you just use your cell phone to control focus?
Where did you get the mirror on a stick?
I can recommend the Samyang 45mm 1.8 Full Frame for Sony
I film myself mainly with a 800mm f4 - camera across the street in my neighbours house . I do have to shout quite loud for the shotgun mic to hear me but it’s worth it for the super compressed blurry background of my plain white wall.
😂
Record audio separately and then you’re all set!
Are you Tony Northup camera man?
Have you tried telescope? You get super blurry moon background.
You know technically you might use the Hubble telescope and even manage a blurry supernovae background that would be amazing.
This is the most practical demonstration of the visual effects of different focal lengths that I've ever seen
One of my favorite things about you is that you leave in the parts when you fumble your words. You’re funny & insightful. Salute! 🔥📷🔥
Ah .. that's the most Trow Uppy part
Full time RUclipsr here. Been watching you for quite some time. I keep recommending my audience your videos as I think you're definitely not appreciated enough. RUclips watch time often indicates disheartening retention rates, but I want you to know I watch most of your videos to the end, to that awkward outro that I love. As far what I shoot with, when it's two of us, I use an EF 16-35mm III at f/4 on the Canon 5D Mark IV. If I'm by myself on the same camera, I will use the Canon 35mm 1.4 L II. And I shoot wide open. I find that f/4 or f/4.5 seems to be the sweet spot for co-hosted stuff. Love, love, love your videos, man.
Nice try... You fingered greatness... No push back...
This guy is the friendliest guy on RUclips. The world is a happier place because of his videos.
The 85mm not only makes the subject look beautiful, it also makes any background that’s behind look fantastic and not distracting 😁😁
If I start a youtube channel I am gonna film myself on a Canon RF 600mm f/11 because I wanna rock that ISO 16000 look.
Rookie. I do 10000mm and put the camera on the moon
hahahah
I accidentally fumbled upon one of your vlogs when i started to learn about cameras and lenses, but ever since I've watched every video when it's posted. Ohh! The Glory!!... Love from Kerala, India.
As expected cameras (and lenses) work better the further away from Kasey they are
but we knew that already LoL
For me, the best thing in RUclips! Other guys are funny too, but you are also relaxed, and do not shout and jump to make us laugh.
Been watching your show for months, can’t believe I wasn’t subscribed! My bad brother! Love your work, keep it up! I don’t think you’ve enhanced my skill set, you actually may have set me back dramatically but it’s totally worth watching you entertain you. Love you man for real, you inspire.
"If you're fat" (music stops) hahah brilliant
Conclusion: Sony wasn't wrong with their vlogging focal length, get the ZV-1 😜
That’s not really what he said ;)
Here my point of view. It depends on the situation. ZV-1 is probably a great camera, no doubt, but you cannot change the lens on it, right ? So you are limited. 24mm is a good compromise for different situations but for vlogging I still believe a wider 18mm equivalent would be better. So I do recommend a camera with interchangeable lens to adapt to different scenarios ^^
Zv1 is 33mm at 4k plus stabilize
If u want that 24 then go film at 1080p no stab
Honestly bro you are always worth the full watch of these videos. I am not sure what I actually learn but I have a great cackle everytime.
How you manage to go from impulsive, irreverent, comedic, enuendo to... respectable, informative, insightful statements and study in the blink if an eye, with hardly an instant in transition, is truly a gift man!
This one had me blurting out giggle-laughs!... yet soaking in your instructive experience on the topic. Lol, just fantastic, loved this one man!
(can't wait to get my 35mm tony1.2 hahaha
I will tell you... you could do "an interview" every show.... Comedic and yet intuitive.... they are great!
Thanks!
Discovered your channel through this vid and subbed about halfway through. Really appreciated the thorough explanations of each focal length and hilarity! 💯
I don’t know anything about lenses but your videos crack me up man. Keep em coming.
I've watched way way way too many videos on lens choice. This was by far my favourite. Kudos.
So which is your favorite? if you could only have only two lenses, one for pictures, one for video.. which would you go for? i'm curious
85 equivalent is good for thin faces; for wider faces a 50 equivalent doesn’t widen the face artificially. Great video to bring this up.
85mm kasey stepped right out of the NHL, look at that juicy neck
I have been looking for the effects that different focal lengths have, this is the best video. Very well explained and captivating
Your face in that fisheye, is absolutely breathtaking.
I don’t have a huge space to shoot, so I picked up Sigma 16mm Toneh 1.4 for my Sony a6600. I am pretty pretty happy with it
11:56 Bingo. That's what I was saying - key part of getting the best Fuji AF. Loving the recent vids mate, thank you.
Perspective distortion unlocked. Only handsome videos from this time forward.
I can't wait for you to discover the Voigtlander 35mm Tony1.2 III full frame lens.
This is fantastic advise, thank you! - As a Fuji user, I use the 12mm F2 Samyang in very tight spaces, e.g. on the train. Usually the 23mm F1.4 Viltrox as a webcam/tripod setup. I also own the 33mm F1.4 Viltrox, but don't use it because of the inconvenience factor (thinking to sell it!) and the 56mm F1.4 Viltrox only for filming others.
Great video! Perfect mix of facts and fun. Really excellent. Thank you so much, you're inspiring!
man that 85 is just beautiful. I like a 40mm for closer distance shots of people, might be a sweet spot for video also - doesn't distort like the mild wide angle of the 35, doesn't feel slightly too tight for close working distances like the 50.
Hey I have a question. I'm tossing up between the sigma 35 1.4 Art lens and the canon 40 mm pancake. Supposedly they can do the same thing. I shoot alt of city and low light but want a nice RUclips shot wide aperture and wide angle on the canon M50. Any thoughts?
@@RobinJohnson You're not going to get a wide angle with either of those lenses on an M50 due to the 1.6x crop factor - that means your 35 becomes something like a 56mm, and your 40 a 64mm equivalent. These are really fundamentally different lenses, with the Sigma being a huge and heavy beast and the Canon a tiny pancake. For every day or street shooting, I'd definitely get the Canon - even better, the native EF-M 22mm f2, which'd end up as a 35mm equivalent FoV, be faster aperture and be smaller than an EF pancake with the adapter.
Thank you very much for your video, it was great, I finally have a deeper understanding of focal length
Amazing video. Finally a video that clearly explores, different lenses and tests the distances. This really helped me find the right lens...and it was hilarious! Thumbs up is not enough. Clapping
VILTROX 1.4 LENS WOW & THE NX1; OH THE BEUTIFUL GLORIUS LOVABLE FLATTERING EXPRESIVE GIFT FROM THE HEAVENS NX1....GREAT VIDEO & REALLY ENJOYED...
That’s what I wanted focal length for RUclipsr and you answer that perfectly thanks
Damn dude, where have you been all my life? I relate to your humor like I am seeing myself in the mirror! Love your work, you're awesome!
Broooooo! This was fun to watch! And informative too!
50mm f1.8 prime lens on a Sony a6500 is gold. Works out to be a 75mm equivalent.
also super cheap. My first lens!
Thank you so goddamn much for actually talking about distance from the camera and specifying 35mm equivalent focal lengths
You look so good on the Olympus. Bonus- the AF performed flawlessly!
Didn't know anyone could make a video about focal lengths this entertaining. Thank you for that! You also made me feel better about only owning a Sigma 16mm & 56mm and skipping the 30mm. This way I can either film wide open (distorted style, see avatar pic) or portrait style (prettier, but inconvenient). One day I might pick up the 32mm Canon 1.4 EF-M lens, but you kinda destroyed my belief in the EF-M mount in another video of yours.
This is pure comedic gold. Sure I learned a lot but that's secondary at this point.
No-one get's the fact that it's all about the distance. Glad you know your esoteric lens secrets!
Love the commentary at this point. I don't really care about the subject, but I just enjoy your helarios commentary.
I love an evening at the matinee!
*good video*
*I usually use the Panasonic app to see if I'm in focus (GH5),*
*and there is touch to focus on it. I've used this method for years.*
Helpful, interesting, and fun video. Thank you.
Man, so funny. Adding humor to information. Brilliant 👍
In today's episode, Kasey discovers how perspective works.
We enjoy his distorted perspective.
It's harmless, if you watch his health channel and follow his advice, it might be dangerous
@@dannyjonze by his own admission, he really knows nothing about diet. Unfortunately he's a bit of a conspiracy theorist about you-know-what so I've watched that channel less lately. But the tech videos are still entertaining.

Fun video with serious advice! Thanks!
Man really like your way of explaining things
Cool dude 😎
Classical art and I digg it
I am entertained by your videos. You're unique and brilliant.
I am rewatching this today it is amazing
The best funny, camera RUclipsr, on RUclips,
The good part of his channel.
Sony is watching his videos.
Yeah, I like the 35mm for the studio shot. 24mm for street vlogging.
best video i have seen about ego. Thanks.
I am on minute 8:25 and I so appreciate your humor. You've made me laugh several times, man! But I've also learned a lot. 10/10 would recommend!
This is so informative AAAAANNNNDDDD entertaining! Love it! 😂
what a great video dude.......love it
The technical info was above this newbie's head but I watched till the end for the laughs (edibles may have been involved). Fantastic delivery.
Every video where you used the G9 seems quite good including the autofocus.
omg, this is gold content, thx !
This is my favourite hobo show , may you live long and prosper my friend !👽📷 💪
Now before I start, I would like to acknowledge Woodrow Flowerbucket to the team. Outstanding content as always. Roll it!
I like the Contrast added by the image of the G9.
this was straight education. and I love calling it toney
Thank you for this video.
Great video man!
This was a great analysis video. I've been coming to similar conclusions, but it's nice to have someone unafraid to look silly talk about it... I mean, not silly. 😅
Until that ultra ultra wide I had never realised how tiny your room is. I too am in a tiny apartment, where I have to be efficient with usage of space. That Panasonic 12mm is sweet, but it is 24mm equivalent. For me 18-22mm equivalent is ideal for talking to camera vlogging style, but a real 24mm eq is very doable. Sadly, too many (read all) compacts claim 24mm eq, but cropping means that you are actually somewhere between 28 and 35 and that is too tight for my liking. I know the G100 got a lot of hate on RUclips, but I like that I can go wider than ZV1 can only dream about. MF on a Panny is easy - just touch the screen where to focus, so I like that ability to go wide, or have faster lenses on a tiny camera. I can even put an 85mm on if I want to vlog with my very beautiful eye.
Hey...I’ve been watching you since your vegan days (seems like a million years ago)...now I’m thinking of starting my own channel, and this is so helpful!! That 85mm looks awesome...one would need plenty of space for that one though....Think I’ll just stick to a 50mm.
Are you spying me? I was literally thinking of doing some research on this topic yesterday. Thank you for the video.
It took me 38 seconds into the video to decide that I was going to subscribe and watch all your content. 😁
I like 40-42mm the most for talking head videos / conf calls. Sigma 30mm on APS-C is 45mm eq and is a little bit to tight for me. 24mm is much too wide IMHO. Seems sigma 18-35 T1.8 could be the only lens you need - it's 27-56mm depends on your APS-C system crop (1.5-1.6) and ~T2.8. Got that lens, have to test it :).
You sir... are a gem
OMG, I've clearly watched too much of your RUclips. I actually kept up with what you were talking about! I'll have two tickets to the matinee, please.
16:55 made me laugh more than it should. you channel is so good dude
There is a new firmware update for the Viltrox 33mm and 23mm that fixes some issues with the autofocus. I did a quick test with my X-T3 and it seems to react to the speed / responsiveness settings. They are so much better lenses than the fujinon...
LOL with the very first line! Love it!
Nice to meet you :)
Cool I’m try my Sony 28mm Toneh 2 good video bro
This is brilliant!
Thank you for sharing. We photographers already knew this since Noah came of the arc ;)
Not gonna lie bro, the 85mm in the Oky looked glorious. You cant beat that compression.
Replying to the title alone, yes it certainly does. I know this quite well as an actor. For instance, I have a face structure similar to yours, and the most flattering focal length for me has always been the 85mm(full frame).
Free therapy right here!
OK, I had to stop for a second and post. That freaking beginning is OMG Hilarious!
Get a wireless follow focus and a HDMI recorder on a long hdmi cable so you can have it near you for focus. Next level
Great content and hilarious. As usual.
I love you and your sense of humor and your opinions. And especially the fact you are vegan ❤️
NX1 for life!
Man... you’re the best!
30-40mm is my most used focal length, recently i'm rocking the Voigtlander 40mm 1.4 on my EOS R and i'm living the dream ! (Manual focus only, damnit)
so dope! i love the 40mm look! kinda wish the amazing sigma 40mm f1.4 was smaller and cheaper.. btw how would you say the chromatic aberration performance is on the Voigtlander 40mm 1.4 with Canon eos r ?
@@Elazarko yes the sigma looks gorgeous but the weight and size is too much. The voigtlander is my best lens, the only flaws is the focus breathing but the render is awesome !
I'm about to try out a 40mm equiv Toneh circa 2.8-ish (the Lumix 20mm f1.7 prime on a G80) for my soon-to-be-live YT setup. But that has more to do with my recording space than how it makes my face look glorious. I tried the 14mm f2.5, but it's too wide and slow, as well as the Leica 25mm f1.4 but that one's too tight. We'll see how we go. Exciting times, and good timing on this vid Kasey! Cheers /Fred
what's the crop factor on those lenses?
Next T-shirt: Beautibul.
Take a look at the kamlan 21mm 1.8. Its roughly a 32mm and I think its much more interesting then the 28mm iPhone look. I think the truly most versatile focal lengths are 32mm and 55mm. Those are the sweet spots.
A7s III & Tamron 17-28/2.8 with post gyro stabilisation. I’ve got a hunch that’s gonna be an interesting combination.
This video gave me hope. Now if only all the rest of youtubers watched this and absorbed your wisdom... it can be fun watching people's foreheads stretch as they move to the edge for the frame, but gets old eventually..
The viltrox 33mm just got an update! It seems they made the AF smoother
OMG, do you do standup?? I'll come and see you!🤣 Oh, and thank you for the lens advice! ❤🤣
So fresh video it's still steaming. Do you need to leave them to set for 15 minutes as well or can I just dig in?
Have you ever tried the Tokina AT-X 14-20mm f / 2 lens? I am really curious how it looks bokeh on this lens
Ever thought of getting an iPad or using your phone and the Pany image app? Remote focusing and almost all controls at your fingertips. Doesn’t mater how far away your camera is.
For a minute I thought all the lenses you mentioned looked bad...Then I realized my youtube option was on 480p.
