You either finds these cars in amazing condition at high mileage or they'll be falling apart. Depends on the owner but yes they survive for a long time if taken care of properly.
Got my 330 cd msport remapped last week 201 bhp to 295 bhp and 302 lb/ft of torque to 440 lb/ft of torque. Pulls like a freaking train left a sti Impreza for dead on the way to a car meet the other day, fella couldn't believe it lol
Got one egr delete and remapped about 250hp, amazing car, perfect looking, few mods helped even look better, every day i want push her she wants that to lol power and economy is in a right middle like 3.0 engine is really nice. look at this guy how he enjoy a drive with it it just tells you to get one :D will never sell mine never! :D
Love my E46 330D, 175k miles, loads of power/torque and more boost on the way it's all good. :D Sounds beastly also, this video doesn't give them justice.
Got my 330cd, mine hardly smokes, averages 36mpg and even with 180,000 miles still has excellent handling. Interior is still really good but does have rust on all the arches. At £1000 by the time I got it MOT'd and had new rear springs I can't complain. Only thing I can fault is the front end is a bit soft when throwing it into corners, I can 4 wheel drift around corners on my favourite roads all day long. The TC unit is probably going to wear out if I'm not careful but without it the tyres light up out of corners with zero effort. Just got to remove the swirl plates and get the diff & gearbox oils changed. I'm keeping mine at stock 200bhp as tuned ones are known for burning out clutches, flywheels, gearboxes and diffs. I might remove the arm rest as it does make quick gear changes more awkward than they should be. I would do a video of me driving mine but I'd lose my licence. Anyone getting over 40mpg isn't using the motor, when I'm on it I'm down to sub 25mpg, 5th & 6th gear don't really get used.
‘09 520d, so far 153k on, engine components and transmission are all original but will need a new clutch soon though. The whole unreliability bullshit depends on how the car has been maintained throughout it’s life, don’t he put off just because of the stories.
I've had mine for a year and it is by far the best car i've ever owned. Mine's the same, foot to the floor and in the rear view mirror it looks like they have elected a new pope.. Mine's an Auto and the gearbox has just failed after 107,000 miles but it's being rebuilt, even the Automatic steptronic box is amazing fun to drive
Nice video as always Jamie. Just 1 point to make though..... just a minor observation, you say they're ageless and with a private plate you couldn't tell the difference between a 2001 and an '06, but you can, the later models were face lifted with different headlights and Kidney grilles. Wanna try out my Alfa 159 2.4JTDm manual?
the rear subframe carrier panels are known to crack on the 330s and m3s. the m3 is only 269ftlb so I wonder how banging through the gears with 430ftlb would treat the subframe carrier.
I would advise anybody wishing to buy one of these to heavily research them first and that goes for all E46 diesels. I'm on my fifth 3 Series now, the second one being an E46 320d and if I remember the heavy smoke out the back was due to a poor design of oil breather which had a updated modified part made by BMW that could replace the original. Unfortunately my one succumbed to the swirl flap issue and ingested a manifold screw that caused the engine to pretty much self destruct. It went in to a garage and never came out again in one piece as even a used engine was more than the cars value. I was warned off buying one but didn't listen and paid the price as you do when running a used BMW, thankfully the other four cars have been completely issue free. I'd always advise searching for a petrol 6cyl E46 as those engines are brilliant.
It was not as much as a bad design, but people being lazy. It had a ''loo roll'' type filter which had to be changed after 2 or so oil changes. It is considered better over vortex type as it actually collects oil.
I picked up a 2004 330cd a few months ago, only 79k miles with some very nice aftermarket alloy wheels. The turbo sound seems really loud, not sure if it's stock. I love it :)
Before the boost threshold it will just want more fuel to build boost as soon as possible, and to be able to actually move properly. Notice when it comes on boost the smoke mostly disappears? It's not odd for a modded diesel to be smokey, they just want as much fuel as you can cram in there. As they say no smoke no poke, can either have an econo diesel that doesn't smoke, or you can have one that actually makes power. I do agree there is a point though where it's excessive, and it's just way over-fuelled, but this is far from the worst it could be.
If you aren't shopping for all out track performance, this is the one to get. It will let you barrel down the Autobahn or manage back roads without ever sounding stressend and merely sipping fuel. For any real sporting ambitions, the front is a bit heavy and while the punch is impressive at first, it runs out of revs quickly.
Got a 2016 Stage 2 mapped Golf GTD with just shy of this kind of power and it is a great balance of practicality and fun to drive... sitting in traffic in London or on a run it costs barely anything to run but when the roads get twisty its almost on par with the GTI, just a shame the diesel has such a small power band.
We've bought a focus ST diesel, just with a map it's took it too 236bhp and 490lb!!!! Where having a stage 1 plus next year to take over 250 plus and adding extras, intercooler etc. We've had petrol st's before and I'd never have another unless it's a RS
yapira3d overrated and expensive as hell to maintain tho, they’re ok if you only do 100 miles a week or so and have deep pockets for maintenance, they have no torque either.
Think this thing kicks out a lot of smoke. Celtic tuning put the wrong map on my 330D 184hp and it dyno'd at 284hp thing chucked out so much smoke. Went like fk 480ft lb of torque. took it off in the end as I was afraid destroying the gearbox lol. Im gonna fix a few bits and take it to a garage who wont fuck it up next time. Awesome car :)
TechDJ87 celtic always over reed on there dyno most of the time they reed cars as having more than stock power to begin with 100 bhp can't be achieved by a map along my e90 330d stock 231 only made 285 on another tuners dyno
Just been offered a coupe 330d for £900 so thought I better do some homework before test drive. I wanted an e46 coupe before buying my current 116i but all the garages & owners that had them for sale all seemed suspect so I just got the 1 series to tide me over. I know the person with the 330d fairly well so if it seems straight I'll have it. The 1 series with a ecu remap is surprisingly nippy and handles really well but poverty spec interior and not putting more effort to get a 120i does leave me with a bit of buyers remorse.
Fast diesels are the future if you live in a country with extortionate tax on fuel. I almost bought a petrol e46 last year but a much nicer, lower mileage diesel popped up and I tried it. Thing pulls like a train through all gears. I'm planning on a remap and egr delete which supposedly will give even better mpg! If you're on a budget, you can't beat it.
i don't get why they map them to over fuel so much, the a diesel engine can only burn so much fuel so once you have got the fuel/air mixture right then it should be at its most powerful and should not smoke like a coal engine, all your doing is wasting a shit ton of fuel
Alex Craven hello there you seem to know a bit about engines I'm sceptical that this is 260 brake when they're 186 brand new from the factory and this is 800 quid's worth of 170000 miles of old beamer?
The over fuelling is to cool the burn in the cylinder. No engines run at the stoichiometric ratio - the combustion temperature at that point would leave the metallurgy severely wanting. Therefore they are all (to a greater or lesser extent) running rich to diminish the burn temperature.
Ellie Green you're just stupid then. Turbo Diesels are the most tunable compared to petrol. Only s handful of petrol turbos can get massive gains just from being remapped. Also 170k miles is nothing for a BMW or a diesel in general.
That’s not an m-sport has an m-sport badge on the steering wheel, the bumpers are just the normal ones. The little lip on the boot and the rims are m-sports and gear knob is correct but I think someone has just put them on. Great video really enjoyed it anyway
pxKfatmaN no expert on BMWs so a guess at best. Either the owner has replaced with facelift parts or its a crossover year where early 2001 is pre facelift and later 2001 is facelift.
I wanna see jamie do a Mercedes e320cdi modified one of course ;) I had a older w210 e320cdi and that was quick but have been told the model up w211 with the v6 cdi is even better mine had the older straight six
That car needs a hydro carbon clean.. it’s wicked stuff for diesels. Electric currents breakdown the carbon deposits in the engine etc... no more black smoke.
Love them, we used these as area cars in Hampshire Police.. 325/330D, nice places to be and quick enough. You should print shirts with some of your sayings printed on them.. 'Don't get me wrong' 'That's a bit nice'
Hate to be one of those people but I have the 330d M sport and that not it... different front bumper and get the extra M sport bit on the wheels oh and I think different suspension set up as mine looks lower than that and the ride is fairly stiff. But i agree a perfect mix of power and econemy. Just saying :-)
first off those deletes will do nothing for power especially in this case with the ebay remap. second you could have picked a better example not the oldest saloon with the least desirable interior and a rear end covered in soot. if you want to cover a proper mint 330D coupe hit me up when the weather is a bit better :)
Fuel lights on, that's about right for a 330. I got a 2004 330ci and when you put your foot in it you can almost see the needle dropping lol, they are a blast to drive but id never suggest buying a cheap one, spend 4-5k for a good one or be prepared for very expensive repairs and maintenance.
groovANDsooth bit over the top. I've got an e46 330d sport and on a tank with some hooning and staying at the upper end of speed limits you'll get 500-600 miles from a tank which is still very good. If driven economically you'll get over 700 miles but what's the point of driving a 3 litre straight 6 like an old lady?
groovANDsooth the 330d will always be my choice of an e46 unless a clean and well looked after m3 came up. But the sport is the one to go for the suspension layout is nice improves the look and handling but doesn't ruin the ride. And personally you can't beat cheap to run but still pretty quick. However if you went for a custom remap you wouldn't have the smoke problem.
groovANDsooth a decent one shouldn't that's just excess fuel that the engine can't combust. Increasing egt's and making the driver look a cock. A little under load is acceptable, if done correctly the fuel can be set to give the same power or close to without all the smoke.
groovANDsooth why is the rev limiter bad on a diesel? It comes in at 4500-5000rpm diesels barely produce any power or torque that high up the rev range. You'll want to change gear way before the fuel limiter for decent acceleration. Diesels produce power so low down and because of that you very rarely need to start off in first gear in a modern turbo diesel and you can start in second with little clutch slip. Think about adding fuel into an engine like adding water in a bucket. The bucket can only deal with so much water and eventually it'll start to over flow when that happens you aren't carrying anymore water you're wasting it. That's what black smoke is the engine can't combust the added fuel it's well exceeded the optimum amount of fuel it can take without adding more air. The optimum amount is to fill the bucket so it's completely full but adding no more water. You want to do the same with the engine get it to combust as much fuel but the minute it starts overfuelling stop and crank the fuelling back a touch.
Rian Allen i don't mind the idea of smoke when the foot goes down ha you got the coupe or the hatch one decent cars tbh just got to find one then sell my other two cars...hopefully il like driving one 😃
Hmm cant you look at a 1.9 tdi vag engined car, that allow huge cheap mods... for example a fabia vrs, ibiza FR, you can also look at the golf pd150. Sure the BMW is ok, but 60bhp extra is prity bad gains for a diesel, there are loads of vrs's running over 300 bhp, standard is 130bhp. The vag 1.9tdi pd 130 from just a remap rest standard 130 -remap 190. Go look on darkside developments website, check their project cars, they are vag diesel specialists.
Iso Confused no vags are rwd in that price range. Plus although vags are that bit better (in my opinion) the bmws have that driving feel you just cant get in other brands.
ye ok its rear wheel. Would have to disagree really about the "driving feel" my experience is more like a barge. Regardless of this was the video was concentrating on basically what you can do with a diesel, and my point is you have chosen the wrong diesel engine for mods, especially for what you can gain for your £.
Iso Confused got too remember the 330d is a 6 cylinder engine which, naturally, gives off that lovely sound and is naturally torquey. What i meant by "driving feel" is that bmw are rwd, front wheels very far forward, seating position etc give it a really balanced driving focused experience. Obviously not the same experience for a 316 for say😂😂
Iso Confused your almost correct a pd150 will achieve 190 on a remap a 130 will only get 170 Also as for cars doing 300bhp that's with bigger nozzles like firad race 520s and a huge turbo like a 2260 vklr the BMW can achieve way over 300bhp as it has 3.0 of displacement it will spin that huge turbo easier giveing a flatter tourer curve compared to a 1.9 with 300bhp turbo ain't coming on below 3k and u done at 5 lol
bastourma1 torquetronix, was remapped with gutted dpf custom intake i made for it and a cam angle/rail pressure tuning box. remap alone put it up to 210bhp.
Remember that bhp is torque*rpm/5250, doesnt matter how much torque it has, the power figure determines its speed. A torquey feeling car such as this produces high power at lower revs hence it feels faster than it actually is.
ReconTHG yes? Diesel tuning isn't like petrol tuning. Diesels are significantly downtuned from factory that's why the gains are so massive. For example the 1.9 TDI PD engine from VW can go from 100 bhp to 192bhp just from a remap.
I had a 2003 (204bhp 6 speed) up until a couple of months ago. Great cars, really enjoyed owning it. As you say they've aged so so well. But why, why oh why, didn't they put a fricking cup holder in it!! :) I never really got on board with clouds of black smoke either and I missed the feeling and noise of a powerful petrol car, so I sold it and bought a Focus ST.
that map needs work.. the smoke aint necessary, its one of the cleanest diesel engines out there, they just flooding the engine with diesel on that map.
not an m sport or an mtec 1 or any other excuse do a quick reg search it's an se and biggest give away is the chrome window trims se front bumper m tech rear and non m sport seats

The whole unreliability bullshit depends on how the car has been maintained throughout it’s life, don’t he put off just because of the stories.
a german youtube channel has a video of an E39 525tds with 1.000.000 km and it still runs... (1st Engine and 1st automatic transmission)
Deez diesels do 3fitty easy
New cars are cheaply made. Old motors will last you a long, long time.
How dya fancy reviewing an E46 330d with 370bhp/600ftlb?
I've had mine for a year and it is by far the best car i've ever owned. Mine's the same, foot to the floor and in the rear view mirror it looks like they have elected a new pope.. 0-62 in 6 seconds is not slow.. I own one, stage 2 and it eats golf gti 207 gti etcetera. Especially in moving sprints
Low down torque is why I love my diesel
Same bro. Torque for life
Nice video as always Jamie. Just 1 point to make though..... just a minor observation, you say they're ageless and with a private plate you couldn't tell the difference between a 2001 and an '06, but you can, the later models were face lifted with different headlights and Kidney grilles. Another amazing video from you Jamie, favourite youtuber by far
excellent video as always Jamie. BTW how is your buddy Joshe's toyota aristo v300? Has it been sold your is being repaired ?
It's not ft.lb, that's energy. Its lb.ft that's torque.
Just needed to say cos it bug me. Great vid anyway, as always.
204bhp stock is the later version. these are 185ish
Could use a custom map by someone that actually knows what they're doing, this level of overfueling isn't doing him any favours, just wasting fuel.
Before the boost threshold it will just want more fuel to build boost as soon as possible, and to be able to actually move properly. Notice when it comes on boost the smoke mostly disappears? I wanna see jamie do a Mercedes e320cdi modified one of course ;) I had a older w210 e320cdi and that was quick but have been told the model up w211 with the v6 cdi is even better mine had the older straight six
diy guy they’re all boring auto twist and go machines tho! A gearstick is a must if you love driving!
Great review Jamie. Sounds like the ideal 2nd car for me to have now I have to travel further to work. (scooby owner lol)
Hey man! Do you think that the e46 330d would be a good drift car engine wise? Do you think that the low redline would be a problem?
freedomlifemake 25 yes it would be a problem in my opinion. I'm sure it could drift but I doubt it will be anything special.
That car needs a hydro carbon clean.. it’s wicked stuff for diesels. Electric currents breakdown the carbon deposits in the engine etc... no more black smoke.
6:50 Are the foglights real? Or stickers?
Love them, we used these as area cars in Hampshire Police.. 325/330D, nice places to be and quick enough.
You should print shirts with some of your sayings printed on them..
'Don't get me wrong'
'That's a bit nice'
I wish I had the money to mod my 330Ci.
MarkyUK not worth it for the small gains you get without a turbo.
So where the fuck r we getting 260 bhp from???
Any idea what make the rear exhaust box is?
MrSpookylukey I think groovANDsooth is on about raised RPM limiters and hard cut limiters on diesels
When set up right these things pull ten times harder than a school boy
Nice review, given the choice I would always recommend the 6 speed
You should try to review a Mondeo St TDCI, but great content! Keep it coming
Joey McMahon they can’t hold a candle to these
I have a x3 3 lt d sd with 350 and 550 foot you want to take to for a play
its a nice fast footprint, i will agree. but when youve got a saxo vts or megane rs225 or clio 182 on the twisties? your fucked
another great review jamie. Do like these might get one next, e46 are the best 3 series bmw have made
my 120d is 203bhp with 437 torque :) it surprises a few people
Rian Allen any smoke? ;) I'm on the hunt for the same car lol
Lewis Pollard nope no smoke apart from when the decat is on it but taken that of for abit
Lewis Pollard but even then it's barely any at all
Rian Allen i don't mind the idea of smoke when the foot goes down ha you got the coupe or the hatch one
decent cars tbh just got to find one then sell my other two cars...hopefully il like driving one 😃
got the hatchback
Iso Confused your almost correct a pd150 will achieve 190 on a remap a 130 will only get 170
Also as for cars doing 300bhp that's with bigger nozzles like firad race 520s and a huge turbo like a 2260 vklr the BMW can achieve way over 300bhp as it has 3.0 of displacement it will spin that huge turbo easier giveing a flatter tourer curve compared to a 1.9 with 300bhp turbo ain't coming on below 3k and u done at 5 lol
Iso Confused and btw the Ibiza ft is a pd 160 the only 160 ever made but it's just a 150 with a diff map and intake mani
07 lexus is220d here.. 383lbft/231bhp, maybe most powerful 220d? 0 aftermarket for them so im sort of in no mans land for additional mods here.
OldSkoolEX where did you get it mapped?
bastourma1 torquetronix, was remapped with gutted dpf custom intake i made for it and a cam angle/rail pressure tuning box. remap alone put it up to 210bhp.
Remember that bhp is torque*rpm/5250, doesnt matter how much torque it has, the power figure determines its speed. A torquey feeling car such as this produces high power at lower revs hence it feels faster than it actually is.
godzillaisnuclea123 /5252*
Jamie Lingard damnit, so close
godzillaisnuclea123 close enough
Jamie Lingard most people probably have no idea what we are on about
godzillaisnuclea123 yeah it is what it is I suppose
You should do a Skoda Fabia vRS Diesel as a young persons car review- If there's minimal mods its not expensive to insure (group 18), great car!
Its a sport model not m sport mate just to let you know You need thicker stering wheel
what he mean on black box ?
Try and do a review on a BMW 318D 2007 M sport
Why? It has 122BHP 280NM torque lol
I have 330d 02 facelift e46 m sport grau metalic
Love the review Jamie, thank you for the effort! The E46 330d is a bit of a performance gem at the moment. Did this one have an LSD?
Where i can found information for a make my BMW like that....It,s really my dream but never can found peopoe Who know about that
Straightpipe and remap
Is it really possible to remap that 3 l 184bhp engine to 260bhp WITHOUT changing turbo or/and injectors?! Does not sound right.
ReconTHG yes? Diesel tuning isn't like petrol tuning. Diesels are significantly downtuned from factory that's why the gains are so massive. For example the 1.9 TDI PD engine from VW can go from 100 bhp to 192bhp just from a remap.
Did it get a clutch update?
Who mapped her
I had a 2003 (204bhp 6 speed) up until a couple of months ago.
There are cupholders in e46
Focus ST !
You’ll live and learn
@@lockettlv where
@@Fd20y in the center console, the part replaces the compartment with a sliding lid.
that map needs work.. the smoke aint necessary, its one of the cleanest diesel engines out there, they just flooding the engine with diesel on that map.
not an m sport or an mtec 1 or any other excuse do a quick reg search it's an se and biggest give away is the chrome window trims se front bumper m tech rear and non m sport seats
Rageman uk I hate that chrome some cars have around the windows it really lets them down.
My e46 330d stock does 50mpg on the motorway
You should review my mates 220bhp 400ft/lb fabia vrs :D
very cool
it's economical and cheap to insure
but also a lot of fun
what's not to love
Need to see you review a 8P S3/RS3? 👌🏻
