Two_Number_Nines it just mainly increases fuel pressure, shouldn’t do anything harmful to the car, they’ve been tuned for the specific model of ECU, they have these things in mind you know, they are going to know if it messes with the car or pumps out black smoke lol
@@DoktrDub only thing the box does is overfueling. The ECU can easily adapt after about a week. Then the box does basically nothing. Proper remapping will stay permanent and will work way better
Life isn´t a video game, power is the product of torque and the RPM you make. [ HP = ( Torque in nm x RPM ) / 5252 ], diesels generaly redline at around 5000 - 5500RPM and make peak torque at around 1500 - 2500 RPM, this is why even though they have more torque then petrol engines, they tend to make less power. This is also the reason why the huge freight trucks who redline at around 1500RPM seamingly make so little power while having huge torque numbers.
1) seeing comparisons on a dyno for actual before/after figures would have made this more credible. 2) the m3 you tested isn't stripped out, so why should we lose the interior in Gareth? It's no longer directly comparable to the m3. 3) your mates thumb still has enough margin for error that your lap performances are also barely credible. 4) for a show with a budget like yours I would expect far more accurate comparisons to individual mods. This segment is really frustrating because I really want to see genuine proof of improvements for each modification. Lap times, g meters, dyno's. Numbers will prove your shop gear is worth a damn
2) It wasn't comparable to the M3 in the first place, since it's a Diesel Estate car... Plus they lost the interior on the IS 200 and that helped a lot.

@daniel guta chips actually work on turbo dieselt unlike those 20€ ebay chips for your civic
People who doubt any of these , i have the last version of the 330D e91 with the M57 engine , 6 speed manual and X-drive , with option to turn it off. Absolutely quick cars ! 316 hp and 750Nm on a stage 2 tune and downpipe/Egr delete / Swirl flaps. Sad thing is tho, after this , you need to spend A LOT of money to find a worthy UPGRADE. SO better keep it :D
If you have the money, go ahead, but if someone just wants to have fun on the budget, chips will do. Its not killing your engine, thats a hefty lie. I wrote it above but I write it again, my neighbour has a mk2 octavia 1.9tdi pd fitted with a chip at around 200k miles, now its on 367k and still no issues whatsoever, chip increased the power from 105hp and 250nm to 120hp and 300nm and all that for 79 pounds instead of the 300 pound remap. Not everyone has the budget to just get a remap.
@@waifuracer6516 totally ignoring the fact that it's a generic tune that doesn't follow the proper mapping. These things are notorious for both overfueling and under fueling. Why would you risk fuel washing the cylinders, or burning the rings just to save a couple hundred dollars, when a rebuild is roughly a couple thousand? Your logic is flawed. Save your pennies for a few months and get the right tune.
You are the one ignoring the facts here not me. If it didnt cause any issue under 167k miles, than why do you still think its gonna fuck the engine? a) it already has a front mounted intercooler (where else would it go?) b) the turbo is actually pretty sophisticated (VNT and all) c) the injectors aren't the problem since it's not a gasoline powered car.
I did in my 2004 330d dyno run, and it made 222HP stock. Changed IC for bigger one and re-mapped it and it gave me nice 280HP. Great engine. Loved this car so much... Unfortunately wrecked it and almost killed myself. I miss her so much...

Had something similar to this chip box (I think it was called KCR Diesel) to try for free on my M57D25 E39. These boxes do make difference, but in my case it was pretty shitty. Yes, the car felt quicker and the throttle response was better, but other than that the engine had strangely more vibration and also fuel consumption has gotten from 8/100km to about 10.5/100km. So I guess these will never be as good as a proper dyno'ed remap
Wish you'd do these runs with a rolling start - say, idle speed in 1st. That would eliminate inconsistencies with your clutch work - and make the results more useful.
If it's AT ALL POSSIBLE to get ahold of an E46 M3 it would make a solid benchmark to this endeavour as well. It would be impressive to see Garreth match an E46 M3 in time around this (now famous and world renown) track.
Real-world case study: Tried RaceChip for an F30 328i N20. Threw codes and produced odd burning smell from under hood. There was a power bump but I was concerned about the side effects. Was returned for tweaking by reseller. Same result. Lost trust in the product. It seemed to be turning up the boost to produce power in an unsophisticated fashion. Binned it and went for an ECU tune, Bootmod3. No codes and no burning smell. Have gone from Stage 1 now to Stage 2 without complications. In conclusion, if you want refinement from your tune and perhaps better longevity, it’s an ECU tune not a piggy back. For me, it’s BM3 for the win... PS - I am not sponsored by either.
This series is so much entertainment and so educational, I learned a lot about suspension and mechanics than how my Engineering school taught me (CS major !). Thanks a lot !!!
I'm confused, if the chip tune really did knock a whole second off the 0-60 time, then how come the overall lap time was only 0.44 seconds faster? Somethings not adding up there... unless the maximum speed on the lap is under 60mph??
Well I had an Audi A6 Quattro 2.7 tdi Stock 170hp with the Race Chip supposedly 220hp I never dyno tested it but you could DEfinetely feel a huge difference the pull overall was really much much better.
i love that you're building an actually quicker, safer, handier and more stable car instead of just making it a rocket that's trying to kill you every time you look away.. :)
So, running the course over and over again can account for that much improvement by itself. There is a reason that the straight line acceleration test is the best way to visualize an increase in HP and Ft Lbs. Nothing has changed with the car other than the "tune" so a straight line or a dyno would have been a much better indication.
I've had my XF-S 3.0 TTD V6 remapped from 271bhp to 325bhp, 600nm to 700nm, not a huge boost as it is already tuned by Jag over the standard model. That said, it is noticeably faster than before plus it's had one of those exhaust mods which increase power quite bit :D
Taking out the interior of any E46 has a dramatic effect on the grunt. I got taken out in a stripped out E46 track prepped car when I last picked up my car from being serviced and the difference was astonishing. CF doors and panels all round, roll cage, usual coilovers and BBK, but currently stock power on the unit. I swear this thing could easily hit 60 in well under 5 secs with a good launch. After taking the heavy seats and liners out ol' gareth will possibly have nearly another 3/4 of a sec to shave off that lap time, taking it well within a midges' nad off that stock E92 time! Be very interesting to see the result. Making me look again at those Sparco R333 race seats now...
Not really any improvements on N/A cars with chip. Minimal gains and maybe raised RPM limit. CAI makes little to no difference. If you want to try get some power you should get aftermarket headers, cat delete etc etc. If you have the money, supercharger is also an alternative. ESS has some good ones.
its not just a generic map for the 3000 cars this is available for, its been dyno'd for each engine, no get it right, its been dyno'd for possibly a handful of the same engine but not each individual engine therefore results will vary and why a proper remap at roughly the same cost will always be a much better option
I don't want to sound like an ass but a 30% increase in power is a bit optimistic for a chip tune. Unless BMW are really incompetent in tuning a car properly that is.
Depends. Most manufacturers detune their engines slightly to comply with emissions/noise regulations, make it more reliable and resilient against lower quality fuels, and sometime to keep the car within a power bracket so that it doesn't compete with a better specc'd car.
bucket seats so you aren't thrown around a lot. minor weight reduction e.g. removing the roof rack things which will also make the car a bit more aerodynamic filter the pumps/pipes which may clog up over time e.g. fuel ones install new spark plugs and clean air filters.
Torque isn't that informative as power. Long story short, F1 cars (about 670Nm) and Yamaha R1 (100Nm) have ridiculously low torque and diesel trucks (3500Nm) have it insane. The reason is that for example that e46 diesel engine has the redline at 5000rpm and petrol at 6500rpm. So lets just say they have exactly the same top speed (65km/h) at 1st gear. That means that with every 1000rpm the diesel engine will accelerate 13km/h and the petrol only 10km/h. So the diesel engine is handicapped as the gear ratio for the same top speed has to be lower as the petrol engine. For an "average torque" of 650Nm on the wheels with a diesel engine, the car will accelerate exactly the same as an "average torque" of 650/6500*5000 = 500Nm on the wheels with a petrol.... More over the diesel is twice handicapped as it delivers the maximum torque between 2000 and 4000rpm meanwhile the petrol gives it almost constant in all the range of the rpms... So with diesel engine is sometimes better to shift at 4500rpm instead of 5000rpm just because the torque from 4500 to 5000rpm is ridiculously low. My e46 330CI (231hp and 300Nm) does stock 0-100km/h in 6,5 sec. Exactly the same as the tunned Gareth, but after 200km/h my stock 330CI will smash that diesel, as it will go on the high revs. and the diesel will loose power and torque and even his dignity
Kmn Dmt then explain to me, how did a civic type-R keep up with a modified 330dA up to ~180km/h and then start falling behind, and even more so as the speed went up past 200km/h?
Well, I'm comparing petrol and diesel engines for the same type of car. If that type-R has more aggressive aerodinamycs or just less power, it will definitely lose agains the modified e46. If you compare 300hp diesel with 200hp petrol, the diesel will win. Also the type-R has less weight and less weight helps a lot on the start but not that much at high speed. At high speed you need power and aerodinamycs. Maybe that e46 was just more powerful and the type-R lighter. But my petrol e46 and the Gareth have more or less the same power, so in a drag race the petrol engine has advantige. If both cars have to pull a lorry, the diesel will do it better than the petrol, as the diesel has more torque
Probably won't get taken notice of but.......... How about some professional tuition? I mean bouncing off the kerbs must be slower than actually having the tyre in contact with the asphalt.
Dan gould I must say he sucks att driving, he has driven that track hundred of times, he better know the lines now.... I’ve been to couple trackdays, learned the track quite fast lol
I think there is a lot of people bitching in these comments “why don’t you just buy an m3 e46” “not a rolling road though” etc, I think you’re missing the point, he’s trying to show you in a really simple way how much difference basic mods make, the stuff almost all Car guys have dabbled with or attempted on their own cars at some point. I think it’s a good laugh! Yes it’s not truly accurate but it’s a bit of fun.... and shows what difference each mods ROUGHLY make. Pretty down to earth guy, if it was a bean in a lab coat I’d have switched to another video/channel within 1 minute. Good work car throttle !
I'd love to see a dollar per second statistic at the end of these builds. Obviously it doesn't take fun into account, but it's interesting to see how much it costs to get a car X amount faster.
considering the cost between a 90-series M car cost and a 1500 dollar m46 diesel, the cost is negligible. as in, you could probably build several of these cars in comparison to a 90sM
Next time on Project E46: Alex strips Gareth forcefully, then proceeds to go inside him without consent. He firmly grips Gareth's stick, relentlessly moving it back and forth as he pushes Gareth further than he's ever been before.
Regarding the „warranty“ of the Racechip: I urge you to read the warranty details because most of the times race track use of the vehicle is explicitly excluded in the warranty - something worth mentioning to consumers!
I tested a Racechip Ultimate (now changed the name to GTS Black) on my Seat Ibiza Cupra 192 PS... and it was running 9 psi prior to the chip and 14.35 psi after the chip. Revo claim their remaps run at around 14.5 psi, so it’s pretty damn close! Also, a dyno run showed that power increased from 189bhp to 246bhp! Running premium unleaded and an upgraded intake as well. Having said that, my friend used one on his N54 335i and had misfiring issues and constant management lights...
I do commend you for the effort thats for sure. As many times that you’ve driven that track with your 330, same amount of seat time and you will run faster in the M3. Faster cars are harder to drive fast around a track. Traction being one issue due to much more power. After your done with your 330 you should really invest a few days in the M3 idf the owner allows and you’ll see you can run fast then a 37.07. Im not biased to either car but seat time in a car is HUGE.
Hitting steering wheel after a turn increases acceleration by 50%

Diesel tuning is one of the most satisfying things every just seeing torque figures shoot up. Like on the 1.9 TDI engines!
I had a 1.9 Ibiza cupra tdi, 210 bhp on remap. Rapid.
Just chipped my Golf 4 equipped with an AXR TDI engine,Can confirm! :D
I also have the AXR engine, an extra 60BHP just from a remap 🤙🏼
I got about the same, this plus a straight pipe, launch control and rev limiter=So much fun.
Love my E350 CDI - remapped to 306HP and 510 FT/LBS. Aventador Torque
Unless i see a proper dyno run i don't care. A highly edited video of crigeworthy track racing doesn't mean much, because there are much more variables other than power. i would also expect a bit of a black smoke out the exhaust when in race mode, but it was as clear as countryside air. This junk will most probably ruin your car, because it's not properly custom mapped.
I think so too. I can in comment to confirm. I would not put that thing in my car. Don't promote stuff just for the buck

@@Speedgear turn the torque down and the power up.

Spot on
Had something similar to this chip box (I think it was called KCR Diesel) to try for free on my M57D25 E39. These boxes do make difference, but in my case it was pretty shitty. Yes, the car felt quicker and the throttle response was better, but other than that the engine had strangely more vibration and also fuel consumption has gotten from 8/100km to about 10.5/100km. So I guess these will never be as good as a proper dyno'ed remap
we want phil back !!
Wish you'd do these runs with a rolling start - say, idle speed in 1st. That would eliminate inconsistencies with your clutch work - and make the results more useful.
Get the car tuned on a dyno. Not a silly chip.

If it's AT ALL POSSIBLE to get ahold of an E46 M3 it would make a solid benchmark to this endeavour as well.
It would be impressive to see Garreth match an E46 M3 in time around this (now famous and world renown) track.
When he said it was something people have been crying out for in the comments, I thought he would introduce a proper lap timer :(
Real-world case study: Tried RaceChip for an F30 328i N20.
Oh I see, so they won't do a remap because they won't be able to sell it on their website, it starts to make sense!

So, running the course over and over again can account for that much improvement by itself. There is a reason that the straight line acceleration test is the best way to visualize an increase in HP and Ft Lbs. Nothing has changed with the car other than the "tune" so a straight line or a dyno would have been a much better indication.
smaking the wheel adds +50 horsepower

Went to the shop. They only do it for diesel and turbo models. I've got a 330Ci so you can't chip a NA.
Thanks for the advice. What do you think about a CAI? Any noticeable gains there?

That’s pretty realistic for most turbo diesels for a proper dyno tune.
The 30% figure applies to torque not power. He got it wrong. Power gains are around 8~10%
Glad to see Gareth is still doing well
DYNO THIS THING AND THAN WE'LL Talk STOP The Marketing BS
bucket seats so you aren't thrown around a lot.
minor weight reduction e.g. removing the roof rack things which will also make the car a bit more aerodynamic
filter the pumps/pipes which may clog up over time e.g. fuel ones
install new spark plugs and clean air filters.
