Next Week: How much time can be saved with proper timers
Oh pls.. Its just some guys with a car doing a video. It would take away from the charm if they would get so professional.
It's the same guy with the same stopwatch, so it's not that bad at all
You can buy an I/R beam lap timer on ebay for like $30. Don't have to be very professional to have a $30 timer over a $800+ smartphone.
@@phillxor but what's the point?
Accuracy. They're shaving tenths of a second off doing these modifications and we have no real way of knowing if it was accurately timed. For all we know the weight reduction is ruining the balance of the car and the time improvement was due to inaccurate timekeeping not the modification.
@@jttech44 no shit, again: I think it would take away from the idea of a few lads with a car.
The current wat of timing is good enough. It would be different if they changed the guy who did it every time.
Did anyone else notice that the indicator-stalk actually had cobwebs on it? That's hilariously appropriate for a BMW.
Razersurf shit it did as well 😂
Its a "racing" car :p
Even though the indicator stalk is there, blinkers arent added in the factory its an extra aparently. Lol
Low on blinker fluid
"I feel a 37.50" Of course you ....., you stop the time when ever you want........
yea.. i was hyped for this series but it's straight scam... Like they got so much money for all those mods and no money for proper track timer? bs
wonder how much they play around with fuel in tank as well.
whole purpose of the series is to promote their shop and their sponsors so yeah..
And the radio was tuned to 87.5 ;)
It's such a scam they even delete comments proving it. It harms one's intelligence to watch this trash. I was just excited to see a tuned M57 engine, but this is some ricer boy trash.
Even with the well-discussed limitations (smartphone timing, focus on what you can buy from CarThrottle, etc.), I like this series a lot.
This video made me wonder, whether they'd want to repeat finding the optimal tire pressure (as done in Episode 3: Once they hit the right pressure, the lap time improved significantly), since the properties of the car have changed so much in the meanwhile.
Other than that I'm astonished, just how marginal the lap time improvements are given such significant changes (like more engine output in the last episode or now a whopping 150kg improvement!).
Now, of course, I can't help but feel they keep up their mode of timing in order to come up with certain lap times roughly according to a pre-defined script for the series - but even if that was so, I'm still thankful for the production of this most entertaining series.
I still don't understand why they use such an inaccurate way of measuring the times
Because it's an advert
Because they don't measure time at all?
Its so they can lie about improvements
@@Erowens98 this was verbatim what I was gonna say
*That shift knob probably made most of the improvement...*
Arek R. it’s a driver mod. my friends a way better shifter after he changed his shift knob
Colby placebo
Placebo can actually make you better, I mean if you mentally feel better, you'll probably perform better
I have a short shift on a 328 e46 touring,
the performance shift knob, lower and heavier is a must have in that case.
You should listen to Eurobeat and wear New Balance shoes.
This will improve your lap time by 11sek. guaranteed.
I heard that only works on an eightuh suxuh though
I fucking love this series! Every Friday night when I‘m back home from going out the first thing I‘m doing is watching the new episode! Keep it up
dont install harness on the floor because if the car rolls over your spine would break
Edit: and since there is no movement in his body if he crashes into a wall only his head would move do his neck might break to prevent that he should wear hans device with a helmet
"The your spine"
Hi, can you explain why?
Regards, Norway
Not true as long as the angle is shallower than 45 degrees
Robert Ri Irrelevant grab on grammar when Arifee has a very solid point. They should have made a better harness mount! I mean come on, the guys are showing an example and should very well do their best while at it! I know they're meant to do it within their e-shop offerings but they still shouldn't skimp on things like safety.
@@Silentalarma why would that happen?
Oh god you're getting close to my m3 time! Another amazing edit guys, this is such a great series!
Hey, awesome channel man! I just saw a little and Im hooked :)
Don G It would be interesting to see Alex put a time in on the M3. Should really be done for continuity anyway otherwise it's not a fair comparison.
Alex in the m3 would be unfair as he knows the track far more, so will obviously be quicker.
@@youwould69 👀
TAKE DOWN BELT FROM CLIMA EXTRA 10HP for sure!!LIKE SO HE CAN SEE
Such a compelling series. Well produced, quality content and exceedingly engaging. I just bought a weekend/track car and learned so much from watching. Literally taking notes as I watch.
I notice that Alex sits quite far from the steering wheel, having to steer quite awkwardly in some corners. An inch or 2 closer to the wheel would give more control.
As would driving lessons
My thoughts exactly ... just a correct driving position will shave some tenths ...🕺🏼
This channel is so superior to new Top Gear, I don't even have adequate words for it
better 10 times than top gear
Didn't expect to find you here...
At least top gear uses a proper lap timer
You're mental. The latest Top Gear with Harris and LeBlanc, is better for real car fans than it was with the old 3.
JSR Devon I see no lies here
The only weight reduction I did on my E46 330Ci was removing the spare wheel.
For such a small saving I think you chose well. And given how much all that weight saved, I'd stick The wheel back in.
Stephen Butler And it's a space saver too lol I've got 24/7 roadside assistance and a repair kit, so I'm good.
@@bazzyg lol, youre lucky, I didn't get the option to ditch mine. It came with a can of foam!
My E38 730d still has its full-sized spare wheel. That car isn't about speed anyway, highway cruising is something that it does very well.
Wow, you should work in F1, you are wasted here on RUclips with all your weight saving expertise and knowledge. Don’t say to much on here as some of us mere mortals might get ideas.
U guys made a big mistake with the seatbelt setup.
I know it's ok for driving, but if you crash, with these anchor points, it'll break your collar bones or as a worst case scenario, it may paralyze you.
Otherwise good build, great content! ;)
please give this comment a thumbs up to show them, safety is important!
lol, seatbelts ok for driving expect if you crash
Love these series. Great content. Really a joy to watch.
Why is it being timed with just a guy holding an iPhone?
how else do you expect it to be timed?
how else would you manipulate the results?
AIM solo 2 set in point to point mode would definitely be more accurate.
Ethan beats every automatic lap timer out there.
If you knew how much training he went through to be accurate to 0.0001 seconds using only his fingers and an iPhone, you wouldn't refer to him as 'just a guy'. His timing is legendary around these parts ;)
You should add cost for every mod next to new lap times.
I look always look forward to my Friday beer and Car Throttle update vids. Cheers guys!
This channel has grown up so much. The content is almost broadcast quality. It's great to see!
You need a harness bar to get the proper angle on the shoulder straps. It's unsafe to run anything more than 30° on those belts.
Takata themself said its ok. Good enough for me.
Raditya Indera lol cuz Takata has never fucked up before 😂
@@fredfrederickson no cause it's the people who install them not the company then selfs 😂😂😂. Same can be said for cars. You drive then but if you crash you don't blame the company for it do you 😂

But there is something about Gareth :)
brilliant series guys, thouroughly enjoying it!
As soon as you stripped it you lost. It's no longer a match for the m3 practicality. Put 4 bucket seats in it.
welephant2013 that’s actually a sweet fucking idea lol
@@s19pajua13 needs to remain functional to compare or it's silly. The m3 is a family car. The 330 is a family car. Sorry wife we cant go anywhere as a family any more as I want to beat your exs m3 at all costs
welephant2013 sorry kids gotta walk to school I gotta beat mums ex to prove I’m cooler
Yes but you can see it as a cheap track car project and see how much can be done
It wasn't exactly cheap though. And it still can't be compared to an m3 if it doesn't do what the m3 does.
Can you buy a weight reduction from the shop?
Yh. Should be next to the blinker fluid
From porsche you can for an extra 20,000$
yes thats the joke.
Ya I sure it's next to blinker fluid which Bmw drivers NEED
It's probability an ebook
Get a harness bar if you crash you'll break your back
hard to sell on the shop
Alexandre Martel but a broken back is worth selling stuff in the shop 'eh
Just in time for my birthday, guys! Loving these series!
Great work guys!!
Why not remove the headliner and doorsides when your at it?...
Because he is lazy and cant sell that in www.carthrottle.com/
@@DuBstep115 he's not lazy
The Farming Dude And you are not even 18 yet
@@DuBstep115 how would you know
Headliner, dash, door panels, all of the climate control nonsense. That's an easy 100kg from the front of the car.
The issue they're going to have is that anchor of a motor up front, so every bit helps and allows you to run some ballast to balance the car out a bit, maybe combined with the wider rear tires that they decided to forgo previously. While they're at it, a better differential would help the launch quite a bit because it's definitely slipping and only letting one tire really eat off the line. That, and moving the battery to the rear, a proper cage and a fuel cell are all going to be necessary very soon here. Might as well get lexan windows on the sides and rear and a proper intake/exhaust because we're very clearly building a race car here and it ought to sound the part.
What I don't like about this episode is that up to this point the car was still really good daily driver material, but now its just a track car. Should've done some engine mods first.
I think they're not really going to do many engine mods, not very easy to modify a diesel except for more boost
Matthias Friedl Upgrade the turbo. You can easily get 300hp.
Exactly and all that just for 0.26 of a second. i would rather have back seats.
this is actually the right way to do it...finish all your suspension, brakes, drive train and body work...then modify the engine now that everything else is up to task but most people want to start with the engine because its easy and the most fun to do and the fact he is turning a heavy diesel in to a track car proves the motor is not the most critical component
Matthias Friedl downpipe no dpf,egr delete, ECU remap.
Really cool project and videos, keep at it.
Love sitting on my sofa with ma carthrottle hoodie chillin and watch the latest video while drinking tea. Best time of the day.
This should have been the first episode. Great video btw as always
I think they are doing what an average person would do,I dont think a regular person would do a full weight reduction straight from the start
Good point, they certainly should have done it before setting up new suspension.
Robert Ri Surely starting with weight reduction would make sense? I mean, it's mostly free for a start.
well they can't sell you stuff like that though....
No its no longer a normal car you can also use for track, so not the first mod most would do
Not sure if they were tough to remove or what but you guys left the speakers in, those can be a pound or 2 each
They left the big ass bulky infotainment system in. That and the speakers, since they would be useless without it should drop at least 10 kilos.
I think they wanted to make it as easily reversable as possible, putting the speaker system back in is a load of work
Yeah if you're going to strip you may aswell to do it all. The little stuff adds up real quick! Rear door cards and passenger one, remove window motors and the inner door crap, smaller battery is 20lb. Im doubting the 'about 150kg' comment! Thats a heck of a lot for what little they took out!
Владимир Георгиев Door panels, radio, speakers and elbow rest. = +20kg
Marc Fransen " putting the speaker system back in is a load of work" Nigga what? its 4 screws and 1 connector and info systems is 2 slider sticks and 2 connectors.. useless kids
Alex and Gareth doing a great job again and now so close to the M3 time.....💪🏽😊
Cant wait to see the 3.0 mx5 get put through its paces and maybe some v box times😎
Fab video and I'm sure there are plenty of people with 3 series beamers who will really appreciate your videos. Cheers, Jon.
Please, have the harness mounted safely, nothing annoys me more than seeing a car with a harness that is mounted incorrectly
Indeed! Get the harnas horizontal at the back of the seat openings
It's mounted safely according to Schroth/Takata themselves www.speedhunters.com/2014/06/takata-ask-the-expert-answers/

Amazing series
Could you guys please get some proper timing equipment.
Next Bolt ons pls „exhaust, headers, intercooler and air filter
An exhaust manifold would be pointless may aswell just put a hybrid turbo on it and turn the boost up
yesss
Unless you are changing the engine that does nothing, well in most cars because they were properly engineered, some were built with scraps and it helps in that case.
MsSomeonenew Unless you are changing THE TUNE. Support mods can help you to reach power levels but if you have that shit race chip. useless.
MsSomeonenew, unless it's a turbo car. Doesn't matter who manufacturers it (excluding supercars), simple quality item bolt ons can have a dramatic impact on a stock turbo vehicle. Add to that a tune and you're really getting down the road. Especially on a diesel! Throw an intake, intercooler, manifold elbow, downpipe and exhaust on a stock Cummins diesel and tell me there's no difference.
Great production, cameras, music & video
This series is awesome!
Why did you mount the steering wheel on the wrong side?
Great way to increase the nimbleness of the car👍
I love this channel so much and it's superior to Motor Trend and Top Gear with great information! Keep up the good work!☺☺👏👏

I am already wondering what is going to be the next result....
Cold Air Intake and Exhaust next?
Turbo diesel cars dont need Cold Air Intakes.. they have intercoolers
@@DuBstep115 most cars with turbos have intercoolers. Your point is?
Cameron Wyllis That any turbo car especially turbo diesel gain 0 benefit from "cold" air intake. They once tested that E36 325i stock airbox is good for +500hp so no gains for inreased air flow either.
Diesel cars have no gains from cold air intakes, pretty common knowledge that now. It’s been in the comments for every vid

Love this series! Great job keep it up like this! 👊 p.s. still lowering the tire pressure? That does make a huge diffrence. On track we use between 1.0 and 1.5bar. Depending on temperature and how long the straights are. Thats giving a huge improvement of grip.
You gotta paint it red. Adds 20 horsepower.
Best notification for today 👍🏻
You can say that again!
MotorScotti Best notification for today 👍🏻
I'd love to see this series redone on a longer track 2-3 min/ lap where there's more opportunities for the upgrades to make a difference. 38 sec is so incredibly short, that even a 0.5 sec difference is huge, but also incredibly easy to be caused just by their timing method, or the fact that they are starting from a dig which has a lot of variability in launch times
Wow this keeps getting better.
Awesome video! You inspired me to make this channel thanks so much 🙏

The lower the level of diesel, the more weight reduction
Ok so... I just got one question. Right now, I feel not so comfortable because I got a economics test of 4 chapters (not too big chapters) on next monday and its already 11:24 pm so I only got 2 days to study... the reason I’m beginning so late is because sometimes I feel like I need to enjoy just relaxing and playing some video games instead of always making homework or learning almost the whole week, especially in my weekend. Sometimes I even think like I’m only 16, I really need to enjoy some relaxing. I just really dont know what to do right now, should I grind hard af tomorrow? Economics is so hard man, I hate school but I want to get my diplomas and good grades and stuff...

This car is begging for an E46 m3 donor car to lend it some M3 bumpers, fenders and all that jazz. An "m3 touring" as it were
Nah mate it's still a diesel
I think, if I may say so, that your next mods should be exhaust and intake at the very least. The racing tune is great and all, but lets see that diesel breath with its new tune!! I am so glad you guys got a racing tune that doesn't include tons of smoke, thank you for showing that a diesel does not need to belch smoke to be powerful!

Im pretty sure the improvement was caused by the better seat more then anything.
Pretty sure the new seat belts have to be on a roll cage or mounted in the rear much higher up
