E39 have specific front axle geometry and its prone to wear lower control arms joints, which leeds to vibration while braking. Joints doesnt have to be loose and noisy, they are just worn and can rotate with even slight force. Great steering, but it has some disadvantages.
@@michalpalka1000 I agree! All suspension bushings in the control and thrust arms need to be replaced front and rear too as replacing some only can exacerbate issues in worn bushes and bearings. Even though the 540i is the lowest power it is the most fun to drive. But it made me a bit sad that TC was left on, I know from experience it is so aggressive in that gen of car. Ben mentioned that even during the rolling race his gear changes had hesitation, I'd be willing to put my money on it flicker the TC on. As soon as it does that it just kills anything that was happening.
I’m not convinced that the M5 here is necessarily a good enough example here, perhaps the exhaust system isn’t doing it any favours? And it probably needs the clutch delay valve taking out maybe some other associated work?
I'm voting for a race with an M5 of each series there ever was, starting with the e28. Please take an E34 starting from 5/94 (S38B38 with 6 speed gear box) and to be fair, only sedans please.
Depends. Remember M5 has one more exhaust setup running while alpina has one less. And by the look of it it has double glazing Windows. Extra airfilter box. So the weight might add up.
In Bens defence, it sounds like the Clutch Delay Valve in the manual gearbox is absolutely killing the quick changes. Many people delete the CDV completely which completely transforms this situation.
@Shrink1061 not sure if i ever managed a smooth gear change with 2 bm's with that valve installed. I think you are supposed to ping the clutch to use it, i found car pops out of gear if you accelerate a little hard on motorway junction roundabouts. I wonder if it has caused any deaths over the years if others have had similar issues?
Than you have not driven the Alpina B10. No discuss, the M5 is a famous sports car. But in direct comparing with an Alpina B10 there are significant differences. The B10 has definetly more torque punch in lower rpm areas and is the better dayli car for me as the M5. Alpinas rises her power on different way which i prefer more then the sporty lasting M5 which is more agressive. The B10 is the gentleman under this kind of cars, and becomes so the underdog in form from the classic E39. And what you can see here, i can confirm. The B10 is not that slower in accelerating and power as the M5. They are very similar in that point with no big differences. But all three cars shown here are phantastic vehicles and i love every from it. But my little bit more favor is the Alpina B10 as 4.6 with 340 hp. One reason for this, is his lower weight, and the other is her more lasting engine which is very reliable. Maybe the 4.8s also, but with this engine i have no experience. With this car(s) you are the king of the road. That way how this E39 brings his speed on the street i have never seen before, and also after. 200 km/h, and you think its not faster than 120 maybe 130. That quietness in the chassis... pure perfection.

That shape M5 was the first beast of a motor I drove when I was in my twentys. I still remember the power was impressive as hell.
I’ve owned an e39 540iA for nearly 14 years. Absolutely adore it.
This sound check and Race smashed all the other races with sound
