    someone gave me this model laptop few years ago, been meaning to upgrade the hard drive to SSD and Ram. Just did a crystal disk info and its a Seagate drive on my model.

      This would be the third Yoga 2 11" I've worked on and bad HDD sectors were common across all three drives. Two of them were recoverable in Spinrite and this latest one won't allow partition management or formatting. Seatools testing just flat-out fails.
      If you store anything important on that ultraslim, you might wanna migrate over to an SSD sooner than later.

      @@grimfusion ultraslim anything is too fragile. All this movement towards thin and light is stupid and causing lots of failures.

    Could an 1) NGFF M.2 SATA to SFF-8784 SATA Express Adapter be used with an 2) SATA M.2 SSD as an alternative to what you propose for the YOGA 211 20332? For instance, one alternative for a 500Gb HDD that appears to be compatible would be a 1) NGFF M.2 SATA to WD5000MPCK SFF-8784 SATA Express Adapter For Ultraslim Hard Drive with a 2) WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD - SATA III 6Gb/s M.2 2280 SSD. Just asking as M.2 SATA provides more product, pricing, and availability options.

      I don't know what you mean. There's a difference? I thought all m.2 sata work with all m.2 sata. I didn't know ngff is an incomparably.

    • @almarodi460

      @@ItsBinhRepaired Yes, there is a difference, both with the physical configuration (form factor) and the data-protocol specification. My question involves whether the difference affects the compatibility. Specifically, the "M.2" form factor is the next generation form factor (NGFF) after the "mSATA" form factor, apparently eventually replacing the mSATA FF. For instance, there are at least four physical sizes of an M.2 SSD card as well as two edge-connector configurations, M/B key (SATA) and M (NVMe) key, whereas the mSATA form factor has one physical card size and one edge connector configuration. The M.2 adapter card accepts only the M.2 SSD form factor card and adapts the M.2 SSD to an SFF-8784 SATA Express interface. Now, the overall physical dimensions of this alternative combination appears to be no more than the mSATA SSD/SF-8784 SATA combination that you used. So, the alternative combination should fit in the YOGA 211 20332 as well, and thus "physically" compatibile. The crux of my question then, which I should have been more clear on the first time around, is about the compatibility of the alternative combination from a "data protocol specification" standpoint, or more specifically the "backward" compatibility. That is, are the "SATA III" SSD specification, regardless of being a either an mSATA or M.2 form factor, and the "SATA Express" SF-8784 Adapter specification both "backward compatible" with SATA I, II, and III. Apparently, per the 2013 SATA v3.2 Specification, the SATA Express (SATAe) enhanced interface protocol supports both Serial ATA (SATA) and PCI Express protocols "simultaneously". I would think a "SATA III" SSD is backward compatible to SATA I and II just as USB 3.0 is to USB 2.0 and 1.1, but I'm not sure about "SATA Express" backward compatibility particularly involving the "old" YOGA 211 Model 20332. In other words, will the 20332's SATA Controller "AHCI" Mode and "UEFI" Boot Mode flawlessly and properly communicate with the "SATA Express" Adapter? I'm hoping you can give me guidnace based on your expertise. I can get the alternative combination, i.e., M.2 SATA III SSD + SATA Express SF-8784 Adapter, for significantly less money at this point but don't want to go through the hassle of trying to return the products if they don't work in the 20332. Thank you for doing your videos. Good work!

    Have this same laptop. Original hard drive has bad sectors in boot areas, so Windows doesn't load and it's impossible to format or recover. I noticed that for the Yoga 2, there's a bunch of partition tables on the drive that can't be recognized under Windows, and I'm a little worried that if I can't clone the drive, adding a new ultraslim 2.5" SATA may not allow UEFI detection, especially if the system is locked to a single drive serial.
    Can I relatively safely assume that if I buy a drive, I won't have to recreate similar partition tables before installing Windows?

    • @ItsBinhRepaired
      @ItsBinhRepaired  3 года назад +1

      You just need to clean install Windows. No old partitions necessary.

      Awesome! I do have one more question if it ain't too much trouble; Watched a couple of other videos about upgrading to an SSD, but those youtubers seem to insist that any standard 7mm 2.5" SSD will work - but the drive from the Yoga 2 is a 5mm.
      A 7mm drive would be much cheaper, but I'm a little worried the case won't close flush and drive carriage won't reattach. Do you have any experience swapping standard 7mm drives into this rig? Does it work fine, or does that create problems?

      @@grimfusion they sell 7mm drives with that connector? It's not a SATA drive. Watch the video. I highly recommend the SSD upgrade.

      @@ItsBinhRepaired Not quite. Lenovo released another version of the Yoga 2 11" that had an internal SATA connector and a 5mm Seagate SATA HDD. Same model number, though - which is weird.
      I've watched a few youtube vids of folks insisting any 7mm 2.5" SSD will fit, but none of them showed the Yoga 2 reassembled. Just trying to avoid a product return if slapping a 7mm drive inside doesn't quite fit.
