    So "OpenGL Extensions", OpenGL is the Graphics API Minecraft Uses, (other Graphics APIs include: DirectX and Vulkan). "Extensions" are additions that GPU Drivers can make to give OpenGL access to features that exist on said GPU (so older GPUs may not have features, or some brands may only have some features). So the mod is basically using Nvidia-Only Extensions to OpenGL that only Nvidia GPUs can make use of.

    using bobby and nvidium you can get renderdistances far beyond 255 chunks.
    basicly there is no limit, the max distance that the slider goes to can be set in the settings of bobby. only your pc is limit, but keep in mind the ram usage must be set in the startup command for minecraft. change the default -Xmx2G to at least -Xmx8G or more , basicalli give minecraft about 50-70% of your total ram. also in performance settings is a limit of how many render threads minecraft uses.

    This is just a theory, but what you're referring to as "screen tearing" specifically in VR might actually be Reprojection: a technique VR uses to interpolate missing frames by 'warping' the previous frame in 3D space to make it seem 'smoother' and feel closer to the target framerate (usually 80, 90, or 120 fps depending on the headset). It completely falls apart at abysmally low fps tho and becomes sick-inducing as it tries to warp the already-warped frames to fill in much larger gaps in FPS, making it look like your view is being pulled in different directions simultaneously. Awesome mod tho, I can't wait to try it specifically in VR too. Thanks for shedding light on it!

    • @PlagueDoctorGoober
      @PlagueDoctorGoober  Год назад +4

      That is definitely part of the problem! I misattributed the lag and stutters to screen tearing 😩

    • @kennybust
      @kennybust Год назад +1

      @@PlagueDoctorGoober You should try to lock the FPS at the refresh rate of your VR helmet and subtract 5 frames, so if you have a 120 Hz helmet, set it to 115 frames inside the game and enable V-Sync. I don't know if VR helmets have G-Sync support but if they do, enable it. In general, you should set the FPS limit to the number that the computer can keep stable, then FPS drops wont be noticeable.
      And before someone says that more FPS = less input lag. Yes, more FPS gives less input lag, but if the GPU is loaded at 99-100% and trying to render 1000 FPS, this input lag starts to increase due to the fact that the GPU can't keep up with the CPU's frame delivery, so all those frames from the CPU just sit in the GPU buffer while the GPU finishes the previous frame.

    The only reason your vr tests would cap at 89-90fps is because you're headsets refresh rate is 90hz, I'm assuming you're on quest 2 for VR but if not then try it with a higher refresh rate and see if it gets you some higher frames.

    the performance increase you got from switching from 1.19.3 to 1.20 might have also been due to an update to sodium around the time 1.20 came out that dramatically improved performance for nvidia graphics cards

    Nvidiun is great. Here is some constructive criticism. It will sound better if you do the whole voice over on your good mic then the parts where you want to talk with the outfit you can just act it out, it will make it eaiser if you put the audio on a speaker/phone and you can just say the words too if you remember it.
    This will keep all the audio consistent and high quality without sacraficing your input with the costume and green screen.

    • @PlagueDoctorGoober
      @PlagueDoctorGoober  Год назад

      Thanks for the suggestion! I will continue to improve on the quality of the mask segments but I prefer to use a different mic as I want there to be a noticeable and genuine difference to the plague doctor coming on screen, I know it has its quirks right now, but it helps break up the voiceover and saves me the time of having to re-record each time the voiceover doesn't match up to the plague doctor footage!

    • @Joey_Hamlet
      @Joey_Hamlet 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@HonkinGooseGeek Minecraft isn't "made" for Nvidia. Nvidia simply has better OpenGL optimizations (OpenGL is what Minecraft runs on), though ever since the 22.7.1 AMD driver update the pure raster performance is much more comparable. Where Nvidia differentiates from AMD (in regards to Nvidium) is it's OpenGL extensions related to mesh shaders. Whilst AMD do technically have mesh shaders they haven't implemented them on OpenGL.

    I discovered Nvidium before seeing this video, and while alone it makes a big difference, together with like other 15 optimization mods or even more it works AMAZINGLY, literally taking my average fps while playing at 32 chunks from 250-300 fps to 700-800! Optimization mods really make a difference, but you need a bit of those to optimise every single aspect of the game.

    Another awesome mod for far render distances is Distant Horizons. It adds in a functional LOD system, a mechanic every modern game uses where things that are far away are less detailed than things that are up close, cutting down the amount of resources used for them immensely. Minecraft does not have this, so every structure within your render distance is rendered fully textured and with all of its polygons, making far render distances cost exponentially more resources despite these details being unnoticeable at faraway distances. With the mod, you can easily hit render distances well above 200 chunks without much of a performance hit, with the loss of detail only really noticeable if you zoom in with optifine
