Its funny how your taste changes over the years, I remember being about 16 and loving Hysteria and now just the last few days ive been going back listening to Def Leppards early albums and I think Pyromania is their best. Like most metal bands, once the 90s hit it was pretty much downhill I cant listen to modern stuff, I didnt even grow up in the 80s but thats where all my fav music is from.
Not a bad ranking and I agree that Hysteria is a great and well put together album! Here is my rankings as well as favorite tracks on the albums. 1. On Through The Night: Answer To The Master & Overture. Don't care these are freaking masterpieces and super underrated! I love everything about them! And yes the whole album is killer and I love every track! I also love the rawness sound of the album. 2. High 'N Dry: Switch 625 & Lady Strange as well as On Through The Night. With that said there is not a bad track on the whole album. Those are just my favorites. 3. Pyromania: Billy's Got A Gun, Die Hard The Hunter & Stagefright. Killer tracks as well as the rest of the album! 4. Hysteria: Women, Gods Of War, Armegeddon It. Just really not a bad track on this album either! And this album holds a lot of memories for me as well. As I got into Def Leppard in '87, '88. 5. Aderenalize: White Lightning, Heaven and others. This is another great album and to me the last good album that the band produced. I do like other tracks scattered on the albums after this one. But not every song. 6. Euphoria: Can't really pick a favorite track on this album. But it is pretty decent. And that is it for me as the other albums don't do much for me. Like I mentioned, just certain tracks on different albums.
For me, the first 4 will always be their best. Hysteria was one of the albums that got me interested in heavy music as a teenager. I didn't like Adrenalize that much and I didnt listen much after that until recently. From their more modern albums, I think the self titled and sparkle lounge had some good stuff on them.
Great review on the Def Leppard albums I agree with you ! Have you listened to the new Def Leppard album the 3 singles, Kick, Take what you want , fire it up ?? Your thoughts?
Great Video James, I don’t think I’ve heard a full Leppard album after adrenalize…really enjoy their first 5 albums except’ Make Love Like a Man” 😂😂wtf Good stuff James
High and Dry was the first time I heard of them it just debuted, I was in middle school, a next door neighbor friend got it for one of his birthday presents. We rocked that cassette loud every morning before school on his old man's giant stereo.
I prefer the classic Def Leppard, Hysteria was a massive hit of course. And for the times it was perfect. Adrenalize was ok, not in my top 5, I still think their B sides compilations Retro Active is one of their best. So, if we're counting that one. My top favorites are: Retro Active, High 'N' Dry, Pyro, On Through the Night, Hysteria and Euphoria.
The early stuff is definitely their best. Retroactive is great, the only reason I didn't include it is because it's an album of B sides. Thanks for watching and commenting
@@mrboulder9714 yeah that's why I said if you count Retro. To me it's the perfect Def Leppard album, it's got songs that could fit era of Def Leppard. You have some Classic Leppard songs, mid to early 90's DL songs, as well as some what would become future DL poppy type songs. And of course two great ballads. But, I really liked the rawness of their early stuff when they were still considered part of the founding fathers of NWOBHM.
@@ryant3600 I was blown away by the rawness of On Through The Night when I first heard it, especially being a guy who grew up on a diet of Hysteria and Adrenalize. Yep great songs like Fractured Love and Two Steps Behing on Retroactive make it an essential pick up for any Leppard fan
You ranked them...like a man. Never actually heard all of Adrenalize or anything after, I might try it with you rating it so high. I really like the first 4 and the order tends to differ every time i listen to them.
I'm listening to The Michael Schenker Group CD. 1980. Cover of him sitting on chair with dark background. I was never really into him. But the first half of this album is really good. Produced really well. I hope you'll do a review of it. I'm checking it out but metal fans that I respect, have always told me to give it a listen. Thanks. Just discovered your channel. I like your non-annoying style. From Southern California. "Cheers".
While I don’t dislike the bottom albums as much as you this is finally an album ranking which puts Hysteria, Adrenalize and Sparkle Lounge In their rightful spots. In my opinion anyway. Their new album is getting great reviews as well.
I caught Leppard in '87 when I was 14. It was my first arena show. They were absolutely amazing, especially considering they had Tesla opening. Following them after they threw down Modern Day Cowboy was a tall order.
I saw that show with Tesla in Dallas, TX. Loved them then, love their older stuff still. The first time I heard a version of rap from them on Slang was the last time I listened to anything new from them.
@@chrisbiro1 I heard Adrenalize all the way through once when it first came out. I haven't listened to anything by them since. Still love Tesla though.
Definitely need to listen more to this band, I only have 2 cds from them: Hysteria and the Self titled album. So yeah, don't know much about Def Leppard sadly. Besides that I've enjoyed the video as usual! Keep it up :) 🤘
@@mrboulder9714 I'll give these albums a listen, thanks for recommending James! Speaking of Def Leppard, a new album will be released soon (May 27th if I'm correct). Would love to hear your thoughts when the album comes out. High expectations?
My list and it changes every week except for 5th and 4th place 6. leave everything else at amazon? 5. Adrenalize 4. On through the night 3. High n dry 2. Hysteria 1. Pyromania
Cool ranking James. Not seen many DL ranking videos. Have to agree they have a lot of poor/generic lyrics which I think has put me off them over the past decade. High and Dry would be my no.1 then on through the night. Hysteria is good but over played, it has some great deep cuts on it. I'll give sparkle lounge a listen today, not heard it for years. Nice one.
On Through The Night would be a bit higher for me , I like the production on that one ! I just got rid of all the studio albums I had after Adrenalize , I had to pay someone to take them lol . Good job on the ranking videos , always interesting to hear someone else’s point on view 🤘
my order would be Hysteria (10/10), Pyromania (9.75/10), High & Dry (9.5/10), On Through the Night (9/10), Adrenalize (7/10) and then everything else (5/10 or less). I would count Retro Active (8/10) as a studio album since most of it was new leftover Steve Clark songs.
I agree about hysteria. Overrated. High and dry is the best. They lost a lot when they kicked out Pete Willis. He was a riff machine. Early DL was very NWBHM. Which is what I like
If you've not heard anything past Adrenalize you're not missing that much. Pyromania and Hysteria are both excellent. Thanks for watching and commenting

I just find X very bland. I've warmed to Slang a little bit over recent years. The self titled is a pretty good album. Thanks for watching and commenting
Cool ranking video. I completely lost interest in them with "Adrenalize" but I like everything they released before that. Interesting to hear your thoughts on their post-Adrenalize albums most of which I've never heard.

@@mrboulder9714 The only reason I put Slang above Hysteria. Is because The Album Slang helped me get through a really bad time in my life. I was in a really dark place and Slang pulled me out of it. Also Im really loyal to their 1st three albums I Just love Steve and Pete together on guitar. Steve Clark is my favorite musician of all time and I miss him dearly.
@@dinozzo97 Such a shame about Steve, he was so young when he passed. Sorry to hear about the bad time you had but at least music helped you get through
I think it all breaks down to your age and which albums were new when you were either in junior high or high school. Both On Through the Night and High and Dry came out when I was in high school. I would rank the albums this way. 1). High and dry 2). Pyromania 3). On Through the Night 4). 4). Hysteria was just too commercial for me. Just too formulaic. Really can’t say I got into much of anything after those albums. Great show!
Agree with your ranking. I may have put Adrenalize one higher but that's nit picking just because I love White Lightening and for some reason Joe refuses to sing it. 👍🇬🇧
10. X (No love for Scar? It might be the only good song on that album. It sounds like something that could have been on both Hysteria and Adrenalize) 09. Songs From the Sparkle Lounge (Love Go, think Gotta Let It Go and Hallucinate or decent, then just some okay songs in Cruise Control, Only the Good Die Young and Come Undone) 08. Slang (I think the singles from this album are cringey. I love Turn to Dust & Pearl of Euphoria, like Truth?, Deliver Me and Gift of Flesh) 07. Def Leppard (Shockingly decent. 06. Euphoria (I could flip this with Adrenalize. I thought Def Leppard was at least getting back to being somewhat a semblance of what they once were when this came out. I'm shocked you never mentioned the song Paper Sun. I think this is a Top 10 song off this album and maybe the best song after anything post Hysteria. Day After Day, Kings of Oblivion and Disintegrate are all really good tunes. Back in Your Face, Demolition Man and Promises are all decent. 05. Adrenalize (I give this a bit too much love because of the era. Tear It Down, White Lightning and Tonight are top notch. I Wanna Touch U and Stand Up are decent. Let's Get Rocked is the cringey version of Pour Some Sugar on Me of 1992) 04. On Through the Night (Had I listened to this album prior to 1987, this probably would have been a spot higher. Pete Willis was the man. Great partnership with Steve Clark and great riff guy. 03. Hysteria (Based on nostalgia only for me. I love songs like Gods of War, Women, Rocket, Love and Affection, Hysteria, Run Riot and Don't Shoot Shotgun, but then I hate much of the other stuff. Had the band just included the likes of Desert Song, Fractured Love, Ring of Fire and I Wanna Be Your Hero on this album like originally intended, this album could have been my favorite). 02. High 'N Dry (This probably should by my favorite, because I feel the better songs are on here over that of Pyromania. A beast of an album with the best guitarists that Def Leppard ever had. All killer, no filler. The only song that's not great NO NO NO. 01. Pyromania (Pyromania was the album that kicked it off for me in 1983, with my love of all things hard rock and heavy metal as a 12-year-old. Every song is killer with the exception of Action Not Words. Comin' Under Fire is my favorite song of all time that nobody ever talks about. Unbelievable time for this band!
For me it started with High and Dry. Then found On Through the Night and was absolutely blown away when Pyromania came out. I know people love Hysteria and I love what it stands for in terms of what it meant for them as a band, but I still don’t like that album. I’ve liked a few songs here and there since then, but for me there’s nothing like those first three albums.
to my ears anyway the second side of the X album is musically heavier than side 1.It still has all the elements of what Def Leppard is all about but that said i don't think there'll be another DL album quite like that
OTTN is excellent. I remember when I first heard it. Musically it sounded like Saxon which was weird to a guy who grew up in the Hysteria era. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment on the video. Cheers
Always been a Def Leppard fan, more a fan of the albums with Steve Clarks work more than anything after that. Steve Clarks guitar work has been noticeably missing in their sound, you can tell how it peters out after Adrenalize. Steve was classically trained, his ingenuity and panache style of play was a huge loss for Def Leppard in my opinion and they have since never recovered.
You just like living in the 1980s, don't you? Fans like you are the reason Bands don't take risks. You want them to repeat the same album and same sound all the time. Slang is their best album. Lyrically, sonically. Love when bands try something new and grow as a band.
No, No, No, "just ok?" It's the best & heaviest Def Leppard song, the only song that bridges on really heavy metal, almost thrash. Then again, I listened to the shit Pyromania only once and dismissed them afterwards. High & Dry & On Through The Night were the only Def Leppard albums worth listening to.
Up don’t say when they come out. Done you did. But what the f man. You drop the ball. I clocked out half way through when you skipped what era it’s from
I get what your saying definitely. The first album sounds nothing like the band that went on to record Hysteria. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Cheers
high and dry really is def leppard trying to replicate ACDC. all the songs follow that recipe. they innitially wanted that direction, the mutt came in and in with computers and synth.

The first 5 are definitely the best, cheers John
Pretty much spot on for me as well those first 4 albums and Retroactive.
Great review on the Def Leppard albums I agree with you !
Have you listened to the new Def Leppard album the 3 singles, Kick, Take what you want , fire it up ?? Your thoughts?
Thanks for watching and commenting. Heard all the new singles and I really like them, gonna be pre ordering the new album soon
Great Video James, I don’t think I’ve heard a full Leppard album after adrenalize…really enjoy their first 5 albums except’ Make Love Like a Man” 😂😂wtf
Good stuff James
The first 5 are definitely the best. Still laugh at Make Love Like A Man now 🤣. Cheers Marty
First 5 are definitely the only one's you really need
I'm listening to The Michael Schenker Group CD. 1980. Cover of him sitting on chair with dark background. I was never really into him. But the first half of this album is really good. Produced really well. I hope you'll do a review of it. I'm checking it out but metal fans that I respect, have always told me to give it a listen. Thanks. Just discovered your channel. I like your non-annoying style. From Southern California. "Cheers".
I was going to tell you that the drums are great. I just looked up who's on drums. Cozy Powell and Simon Phillips. Hah! It all makes sense now!
Hi thanks for watching. I've never checked out the MSG stuff, another one of those bands I've not got round to yet. Thanks
Great list!!
Cheers, and thanks for watching
While I don’t dislike the bottom albums as much as you this is finally an album ranking which puts Hysteria, Adrenalize and Sparkle Lounge In their rightful spots. In my opinion anyway. Their new album is getting great reviews as well.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Yeah I like the singles I've heard, looking forward to the new album
@@chrisbiro1
I heard Adrenalize all the way through once when it first came out. I haven't listened to anything by them since. Still love Tesla though.
Great list, I love Sparkle Lounge, could be my 3rd fave. Where would Diamond Star Halos fit in your list? Just subbed! 👍🏻😀
Thanks for subbing. Sparkle Lounge definitely exceeded my expectations. Cheers for watching fella
Definitely need to listen more to this band, I only have 2 cds from them: Hysteria and the Self titled album. So yeah, don't know much about Def Leppard sadly. Besides that I've enjoyed the video as usual! Keep it up :) 🤘
Plenty of more good stuff in their discography, first 5 are the best

Haha leave everything at Amazon at number 6 😂 Nice ranking and great choices 👍
Cool ranking James. Not seen many DL ranking videos. Have to agree they have a lot of poor/generic lyrics which I think has put me off them over the past decade. High and Dry would be my no.1 then on through the night. Hysteria is good but over played, it has some great deep cuts on it. I'll give sparkle lounge a listen today, not heard it for years. Nice one.
I like the first album at number one, the second album at number 2, and the 3rd album at number three.
The first 3 are excellent. Thanks for watching
On Through The Night would be a bit higher for me , I like the production on that one ! I just got rid of all the studio albums I had after Adrenalize , I had to pay someone to take them lol . Good job on the ranking videos , always interesting to hear someone else’s point on view 🤘
Post Adrenalize the discography is patchy. Cheers Darcy hope you're well fella
I'm not too much into the guys anymore but, I still really dig the instrumental from High and Dry. Wish I could remember the name of that tune.
Switch 625

Hysteria is a masterpiece
I agree about hysteria. Overrated. High and dry is the best. They lost a lot when they kicked out Pete Willis. He was a riff machine. Early DL was very NWBHM. Which is what I like

1). High and dry
2). Pyromania
3). On Through the Night 4).
4). Hysteria was just too commercial for me. Just too formulaic.
Really can’t say I got into much of anything after those albums.
Great show!
Slang is much higher up for me. At the time i didnt like it but i really do love the album now. Agree with X being bottom. Horses for courses
I like it more than I did, but Slang has some terrible stuff on it. Yeah, X is a stinker

Agree with your ranking. I may have put Adrenalize one higher but that's nit picking just because I love White Lightening and for some reason Joe refuses to sing it. 👍🇬🇧
Thanks for watching. I'm guessing as it's about Steve Clark that's why he doesn't want to sing it maybe

High and Dry is a beast and worthy.of being #1. Cheers for watching and commenting 👌
10. X (No love for Scar? It might be the only good song on that album. It sounds like something that could have been on both Hysteria and Adrenalize)
09. Songs From the Sparkle Lounge (Love Go, think Gotta Let It Go and Hallucinate or decent, then just some okay songs in Cruise Control, Only the Good Die Young and Come Undone)
08. Slang (I think the singles from this album are cringey. I love Turn to Dust & Pearl of Euphoria, like Truth?, Deliver Me and Gift of Flesh)
Let's Get Rocked is the cringey version of Pour Some Sugar on Me of 1992)
Love your detailed ranking here. Thank you for watching and commenting on the video. Cheers
For me it started with High and Dry. Then found On Through the Night and was absolutely blown away when Pyromania came out. I know people love Hysteria and I love what it stands for in terms of what it meant for them as a band, but I still don’t like that album.
Steve was a genius and is much missed. Thank you for watching
You just like living in the 1980s, don't you? Fans like you are the reason Bands don't take risks. You want them to repeat the same album and same sound all the time.
Slang is their best album. Lyrically, sonically. Love when bands try something new and grow as a band.
