Well done to all who made this happen. high rises provided they are designed and maintained to a high standard (including fire safety!) are great additions to the built environment in London but anywhere else around the world. High rises buildings are not the cause of social problems - look at Hong Kong, Taiwan etc where high density urban living is the norm. i met many students from these countries and they like high rises.
Interesting Fact: The highest occupiable floor in the London Shard is the 72nd floor observatory. There is no floor that can get a person higher. The rest of the tower beyond the 72nd floor is just architectural decoration that has no functioning aspects about it outside of just looking nice. It's all just non occupiable decoration. The 72nd floor rises to a height of 802 ft above ground. So yes that means the Shard's highest observatory can't get you to a thousand feet. In fact it falls 198 ft short of a thousand feet. The highest pinnacle point of the building rises to 1,016 ft above ground. That makes it higher than the 984 ft tall Eiffel Tower. However the top floor observatory on the Eiffel Tower can get you up to 906 ft above ground. That's 104 ft higher than the London Shard's 72nd floor observatory. What's weird to me? I live a very short drive outside of a city here in the US that has 5 buildings that are even taller than the London Shard. And no i'm not in New York. (About to have 6 buildings actually now that I think of it.) One is under construction.
Scootaloo Ur comparison with the shard and the effiel tower reminded me of my earlier rants about when Sears Tower lost the worlds tallest building title to petronas towers back in 98, despite Sears highest floor being nearly 200 feet taller than the highest at petronas. And how Sears lost the title of tallest in the usa to 1 wtc despite the fact that sears roof is 90 feet higher than 1 wtc in nyc.
2013 - The Shard, the tallest building in the European Union, is opened to the public. The Shard also referred to as the Shard of Glass, Shard London Bridge and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a 95-storey skyscraper, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, in Southwark, London, that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development.
Western civilization has completely abandoned the aesthetically pleasing stone and brick that built some of the most beautiful, enduring cities on the planet. Exchanging it for these Dubai style mega structures that are all glitz and no detail in design. The skyscrapers are gigantic shiny structures made from glass and steal. While the apartment buildings, museums, schools are designed in some hideous, abstract, pretentious manner that shows the designers disdain for the much more brilliant and talented architects of past generations. This lack of aesthetic beauty makes for a depressed, hopeless population. Shame on modern architects as well as all artists in general.
Have you even done any research on skyscrapers, just google tallest buildings in the world, China was the most aesthetic looking skyscrapers in the world and tallest.
i think there should be room for both traditional and modern architecture. Some modern buildings are designed and put together in a rush but some are very beautiful such as Calatrava's buildings.
there are men cleaning the windows on the outside working in cradles I was on the 73rd floor when they was cleaning the glass outside and they waved to us viewers one stupped person said they are working very slow would you clean windows nearly 1000 feet up on the 73rf floor I know I would not and dont forget the wind and chill factor up there

1 floor a day, 6 days a week and reached the 21st floor in 10 weeks. Correct me if I am wrong but if that maths is correct it would take just under 4 weeks to get to the 21st floor right?
They had a lot of other work at the beginning to do to make it structurally sound, once they got that out of the way and got into the groove, then they were managing to go up that quickly. But they averaged 9m per day
Eiffel Tower is actually higher than the Shard with 324m. And in France they are going to build the Hermitage towers, two twins towers of more than 320m
+Foxxyownz I mean like any European styled buildings, they all look good, it's hard to find an ugly European architectural style. Skyscrapers look beyond awesome in US, but in Europe they don't seem to fit in overhaul city look.
nyc started the skyscraper trend back in the early 1900's and it's been a staple of large cities throughout the world ever since. it was only a matter of time befor london to start building skyscrapers as well.
Khakonov architecture evolves by time. It would be strange if people were building only Victorian or Gothic buildings for centuries. Times are changing, so are the cities and skylines.
Never heard of it before. Usually these mega talls buildings become famous. But anyway, I'm here to criticize the name of the show: You guys are failing to understand the concept of impossibility as a concept.
I doubt that the Shard "put London on the map". The city was pretty well known already.
Actually nobody knows a shit about u guys lol
But it's good that you think of it that way
I'm just saying.. NYC known more than UK , just NYC lol
Right. This is the first time I've heard of the Shard but I've known about London since I was a wee lad
A truly impressive build consisting of 12,700 tonnes of structural steelwork. We’re proud to have been apart of this project. 🏗
My favourite skyscraper. Even though it's broken, it still remains elegant and beautiful, just like a piece of glass.
