  • Hundred thirty years ago in 1889 as Paris was hosting the World’s Fair, the iron lady became instantly the city's iconic monument embodying the modernity and the engineering feat of this Era. The engineer Gustave Eiffel fought for years to erect in the heart of Paris the tallest tower ever built, seen by many as ugly and out of place at the time. Against all odds, he took the helm of a gigantic building site and revolutionized the construction technique. Revisit this historic saga and engineering challenge in this detailed account and high end docu-drama !

    In August 2005 I stood on the Eifel tower with the lights of Paris all around and was in awe of what I saw. I am not a city person, rather at home in the mountains , the woods and the country life. Thx for this documentary 👍

      The origin of the iron of the Eiffel Tower
      Parisian since 1889, the Eiffel Tower, by its metal, comes from the Grand Est region, more precisely near Nancy in Lorraine!
      In 1887, Gustave Eiffel needed more than 7,000 tons of iron to make the centerpiece of the 1889 Universal Exhibition: he launched a call for tenders won by the Fould-Dupont forges of Pompey, in Meurthe-et-Moselle. The company of blast furnaces, forges and steelworks of Pompey supplied all the iron necessary for the construction of the Eiffel Tower and also took care of the puddling. Before being processed, the ore was directly extracted from local mines. Exactly 18,038 pieces of iron were produced by the Fould-Dupont forges for the Eiffel Tower. We can still see their "signature" plaque affixed to one of the pillars of the Tower today!

    The lift alone in the Eiffel Tower is a marvel in itself.
    One could only imagine what the Parisians thought of the tower when it was completed. It looks so futuristic in comparison to the amazing architecture it is sharing its space with.

      Tłumaczenie jest właściwe, ponieważ jest to idiom - "small fortune" oznacza właśnie ogromne pieniądze.

    • @AlettaMarais-q2z
      @AlettaMarais-q2z 23 дня назад +1

      The documentary is about the construction of the Eiffel tower NOT about tallest free-standing building. We all know in 1889 the tower was the highest in the world but that was only until 1930.

      I agree that this documentary is about the building of the magnificent Eiffel Tower, but mentioning the buildings that succeed it and ignoring a similar structure that also has an observation deck and a restaurant at 553 metres tall is an oversight.
