    So V-Log is one of those things that people either struggle with or get nailed straight away. For the first few months of owning the Panasonic S5, I struggled with V-Log and stuck to Cinelike D.
    Until Russell told me about the gamut conversion LUT...
    This V-Log to Rec709 conversion LUT is insanely good and easily the best solution i've seen for converting your log footage to a workable starting point.
    I hope all of you Panasonic shooters check this conversion LUT out, and please let me know how you find it!

    Awesome video. I downloaded the LUT package $20 U.S. and unfortunately the one click to an almost ideal footage didn't happen for me when I applied it to my Panasonic GH5S VLog footage. I have to brighten it up quite substantially (0.7 in Exposure -Premiere Pro) and then bump whites, highlights and and even shadows. I did bump up the midtones and highlights on the color wheels as well while pushing more blues into the midtones. Compared to another LUT I just started using, this LUT 'V-Log 2.0 really looks nice after all of that tweaking. It looks 10x better for sure. True, I can get the desired look in about 30 to 60 seconds, I just wasn't expecting to have to do so many touch ups after watching your video. Not sure if I need to start forcing my GH5s to overexpose by 2/3 stop so that when I apply the lut it will be at the right exposure to lay on top of footage to make it really pop. Perhaps with this change, I will then be able to only tweak the color wheels and push a little color into the midtones and/or highlights like you demonstrated in your video. I think that I will try this and report back. Thank you for taking the time to share. Much appreciated!!!

  • @markshirley01
    @markshirley01 3 года назад +3

    Thanks Josh your videos have been so helpful on the S5.
    At £1400 from a grey seller its got to be the best value hybrid camera on the market.
    The only downside for my workflow is I've heard the 1080p is not very good. It may seem strange to shoot HD in 2021 but most of my work is quick turnaround hybrid content for social media that just doesn't need 4K (now mostly vertical).
    I need to update my equipment mainly for gimbal use where Im very weak.
    At the moment the logical camera for me is the A7C. But the general handling of that camera compared to the S5 is very poor.

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  3 года назад +3

      So I've held and used the A7C, and let me tell you - it's not a comfortable experience. The features it has are really good, but the EVF is tiny, the screen is poor and the whole build of that camera feels a little plasticky to me.
      the 1080p on the S5 is absolutely fine, and would be much better than the A7C since you're able to get 10bit colour, and that in itself will make a big difference. Another thing to note is that most cameras shoot 1080p to be quite soft nowadays, so a little bit of sharpening in post wouldn't hurt anyone :)

I took on clip from my S1, shot in V-log, used the Gamut LUT, duplicated the clip and used the Nicest LUT. I found them to be very close no identical but close and---pretty simple to match---and I'm no Einstein at matching colors.

      Hey! Unfortunately not, however I had the A6400 for about a year before I got my Panasonic cameras and I wouldn't recommend using log on any 8bit sony body. The 8bit colour isn't really built for flat profiles and I always had a hard time getting decent results with it. The S5 is 10bit, so it means you have a lot more colour info stored in the file for when you want to go in a grade a bit heavier :)

    Obviously exposure and white balance must be precise when shooting to obtain the best results in post.

    What is the difference between V-Log picture profile and V-log pro res raw. Is the v-log picture profile sort of a fake pro res raw preset for Long GOP footage?

    if i want to adjust exposure for just one part of an video how do i do it?
    lets say that the first part has correct exposure but the last part clips highlights
    i want to change that last part only not the first.
    is it possible?

    by default the input and output is Rec. 2020, is Rec. 709 better for colours? Did you get the v-log V2 included with yours?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  2 года назад

      Rec709 and Rec 2020 are simply just the colour spaces that you should configure your footage to once it's ready to be seen on other devices. If I were you, i'd stick with Rec709 as it's more widely used compared to Rec.2020 :)

  • @KevinMullarkey
    @KevinMullarkey 2 года назад

    I'm a bit confused (noob) in that VLog records in rec709 and not BT2020 color space (unlike HLG) on the S5. Also, where does VGamut come into play?. Is it is it just a case of selecting a BT2020 LUT for output?

    • @JoshCameron
      @JoshCameron  2 года назад

      If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about BT2020 as a colour space if you’re planning on sharing the content across different devices and on social media etc. Rec709 is still the most common colour space that things are displayed in, so essentially the V-Log LUT will convert that log footage to a rec709 colour space. V-Gamut refers to the colour information that’s stored inside of the V-Log file, and is the optimum choice for maximum colour reproduction :)

    Its impossible to value the LOT with such a tiny adjustment. You have so much more to do there if you want but I do respect the choise. We have all different referens we will reach.Most important is as you say the skin tones but by adjusting the ambient environment it can lift/strengthen the impression even more. My thaughts.

      I agree with you here, but I’m not a colourist and I’m very realistic with how much time I want to spend on colouring my footage. I do anywhere between 2-5 shoots a week, all with a fast turnaround - so therefore speed and workflow are very important for me!

      @@JoshCameron I really buy that but it could come by the road later. Its just frustrating to se that you have more in you. Its nice to see the "pure" work as you do. I am 65 and cant have that kind of "new" feeling as you do but I have never had so fun as now with both stills and video.Will work 10 more years if I got the health for it. So, just go for it !!! • @sonriephotography9680
      @sonriephotography9680 2 года назад

      there is no auto installer. You have to go into your application e.g. Premiere Pro in your finder application (I use MAC so I opened a 'Finder' window then to Applications) and right click 'Show Package Contents' go to Lumetri and then LUTS and then Technical folder. I copied the download (.cube files only) from my Downloads designated folder to this 'Technical' folder. If Premiere Pro is open, close and then restart it. If not open, just open it and it will show up in the Lumetri Color panel in the Input LUT dropdown list. This worked for me. I wish you luck.
