Thanks for this in-depth video! I really like how you get straight into the details! Could you explain if there is a noticeable difference in video quality of a lower bitrate MP4 vs a higher bite rate MOV file for a layperson? Cheers!
Thanks for watching, Kai! Always try to keep my videos straight to the point 👍🏼 So in terms of a noticeable difference, you shouldn’t see “too much” difference to the naked eye, however when you got to edit an MP4 file it won’t be anywhere near as robust as the MOV files due to the lower write rates. 4K 10bit MP4 files at 100mb/s will still perform way better than any a lot of the other brands out there since it’s still a 10bit colour format and 100mb/s is respectable. However, the 150/200mb options in MOV will definitely give you the most flexibility. Hope this helps!
Hi Josh excellent video. Thanks for explaining in detail. Now if I want to customize photo and video settings to C1 and C2. In what mode my camera dial should be for photo set up? If I use Camera Auto photo mode for video also ( just pressing the red button) can I use the ISO or Exposure compensation to adjust video lighting? What manual mode is best for photo P/S/A/M? Difference between P and M?
Hi Carl! Here are the cards I use: SD Cards (UHS-1) UK - amzn.to/2QTVKX3 US - amzn.to/3doDlZN DE - amzn.to/2Po5acV SD Cards (UHS-ii) UK - amzn.to/3w89ddQ US - amzn.to/3fqQGUg DE - amzn.to/31BJMn1
Awesome video! A quick query, how do you adjust the shutter angle to 180 degrees once you set it to angle/iso in the menu? My GH5 was a doddle but I cant find it anywhere on the S5. ... Sorry for the noob question! Edit: Ok sorted it, you have to be in shutter priority mode within video mode and then you use the top rear wheel to adjust...
I always shoot in full manual so I’ve never had an issue finding it! But yeah shutter priority and M would be the best bet so you can access to that option! Glad you sorted it Rob!
Great video, very helpful as always! Thanks P.S. On a side note, don't know why I couldn't help thinking that you'd fit perfectly in a Netflix series about the Krays :)
Josh, do you record in C4k or 4K? Any preference between the two? I've been recording in C4k but don't want to shoot in that larger format if it's not worth it.
@@JoshCameron i actually saw a video that showed that 3840x2160 is the full sensor width, which means that C4k is more cropped in so you get less quality although it sounds like more reolution. But in 4k60, C4K is higher resolution becasue it is cropped in and has more pixels on the wide side. But like you said its indistinguishable
Thanks for the review. I'm looking to change from my Nikon 750 to a decent and better AF camera and I think your review might help me make the decision. Question - if you change from photo to video and vice versa, does that affect the settings? That's does it keep the old setting when you return to the previous mode?
Hello Josh, great video!! It helps a lot. I have a question about tho color profiles. Do you adjust the natural profile and the cinelike d2 individually or do you just use them as they are? It would be really helpful if you could answer me. Thank you 🙏🏼
Hey Samuel; thanks for the kind words! So when i shoot natural, I normally don’t tweak at all (maybe a little more saturation to taste but that’s it). When I use cinelike D I will do some adjustments to the contrast and saturation, so a little more in depth comparatively to natural. Hope this helps!
Hey Josh! I have an S5 and I'm quite liking it. But I have to say that I absolutely hate the slo mo in it. The bit rate is so low that the 1080p modes look like 720p that's been upscaled. The visuals all end up looking really muddy. 4k 60 is a tad bit better but it is a real shame that anything above 60 is virtually unusable in a professional setting. Any idea if this is something that can be fixed with a firmware update in the future? Is there anyway to contact panasonic to find out?
Hey Joel, I get what you’re saying here. The S&Q function isn’t something I use very often but I can definitely tell the difference in quality when I do use it. My advice for now would be only to use it when you can give a decent amount of light to the subject you’re filming. Normally you can make a lower birthdate/ lower res image look 10 times better with good light. Hopefully with firmware they might bump up the codecs a bit to beef out the high frame rate options, but that’s something we’ll have to wait for I guess to see if that ever happens!
If you want professional bit rates buy the s1h or the gh5. The s5 is more like a g9 than gh or sh. S5 has half the bit rate options a gh5 has , of course you can see a difference if you really want. Normal viewers will never see it. Most cameras you can buy at this price point dont even reach the s5 specs so i guess you really ask for too much from such a cheap camera.
I‘m wondering if shooting V-Log is really that much of more work in post compared to Cinelike-D. Since you have to touch both I guess in the end it‘s neglectable if using a conversation LUT 🤔
To be honest, the difference in workload is minimal. However, you can always spend a lot longer tweaking log footage so I guess it gives you that option !
True, If I am going to use a LUT, I might as well be in VLOG. I think I will eventually adjust (add contrast & saturation) CineD and just start taking it straight out of camera.
If your workflow for Cinelike D includes a conversion LUT, then v-log isn't any more work, really. I do the standard practice of applying REC709 conversion LUT, then tweak for correction, apply secondary LUT for looks like Eterna, then tweak a bit further if necessary. This is my workflow for Cinelike D and v-log, and there's no difference in the amount of work needed.
Hey, Josh! I know you don't use Zebras, but I was wondering if you knew where VLOG clips? At what EV level does VLOG clip? And as far as zebras go, is 100% relative to the profiles you're shooting in, (as a percentage measurement should be)? Example - 100% in standard is clipped, 100% in vlog is clipped, even though the 100% in vlog is at a higher EV. I hope my curiosity in this matter is coming across. If this is the case, Sony and Panasonic obviously disagree on what these percentage values are based on, because Sony can be set higher than 100%. Anyway, thanks for your content and being a LUMIX advocate. It's so nice to take a break from the Sony cult once in a while! Ha!
Hey buddy, V Log clips below 18% IRE, and around 85% IRE, with V Log L (on the GH models) clipping around 80% IRE; there's a distinctive roll-off between 80-85% for specular highlights and whites. Different manufacturers use different Gamuts and Gamma curves for their own Logarithmic colour space. Shooting in Log will be most useful for camera-matching between different manufacturer models, or for expanding dynamic range in a WELL-LIT scene. Using any Log profile for underexposed images or low light scenarios will give you noisy results, lacking detail. Also worth noting that the bit depth matters - a 10-bit image will give you the necessary lattitude to naturally correct the colour space without any compression artifacts or chrominance noise, if you're shooting in 8-bit, you're better off using the 'Flat' profile, instead of a Log curve, as you won't have to push/pull the saturation intensity too hard. Also White Balance is SO important when shooting in Log - you'll notice colour contamination, exaggerated chromatic abberation, and untameable colour casts on neutrals (black, grey & white) if you get it wrong!
@8KisOK Spot on! Couldn't have put it better myself. I have noticed that S/N ratio gives between 12-13 "useable" stops on dynamic range, but there's still detail in the lowest range, if you're careful with your exposure.
hey josh i have a massive problem with my feelworld f5 pro external monitor, maybe u could help me: it has massive lag due to hdmi output is only available in 4k 25, and i CAN NOT change it to fhd on the S5, its driving me crazy. will buying a upperclass monitor solve this problem? or do u know why the resolution options are greyed out with my monitor connected? i would love to hear your answer :)
Hi Josh its me again, you say AF looks more natural with these settings but for me, its already so slow compared my old canon 200d that Id prefer the AF to be more reactive. So can you advice me the best settings? Thank
How to open and edit MOV 10 bit video on Windows? its not opening and when i try to convert it the quality is just awfull. what is the best way to work with it?
Hi Josh, what happens when I have filmed in two different frame rates, one in 4k 25fps, one in 4k 50fps ? I would like to include both in the same timeline, so what timeline frame rate speed do I select at the beginning when creating a new project and what output speed do I select to make sure it plays correctly, and plays both normal motion and and slow motion ? Total beginner, cheers.
Okay so what you need to do is make a 25p timeline and then you can slow your 50p footage down to 50% speed, and your 25p footage will remain 100% speed :) Hope this helps!

Honestly mate, I wouldn’t be so caught up on it, it’s absolutely fine for most of my use cases and the camera itself deserves so much more credit than simply “af is bad” because it is a seriously amazing body!
If he uses manual for paid work...then what does that tell you....I have the S5 and still not happy with the AF and have used the tips from Luca Bono as well...it's simply not good enough to rely on and why I will be making a shift to Sony after far too many years of making excuses with Lumix.

Have you got the AF Set to "works all the time' instead of 'only while recording'? That could be your issue. Also, I don;t think the S5 supports EYE AF, only face and body unfortunately

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong here, but Focus Peaking stopped working for me about a week ago. Whenever I used to press my custom Fn button to trigger peaking, everything worked fine. All of a sudden one day when I pressed that button, nothing happened. Very strange as I then mapped that button to perform a different function and it worked fine. It’s only focus peaking that won’t work for me now.
That’s very strange, sorry to hear you’re having that issue. Are you running on the latest firmware by any chance? That’s something I’d double check first as it could be as simple as an update to fix!
Just bought the S5. Does yours have a low-resolution preview when shooting video? I have been testing it on the higher ISO to see its low light capabilities. When doing so, the S5 LCD screen will show a noisy preview. But when I press the record button, most of the noise cleans right
@JoshCameron Thanks for the response. I am use to the GH5 and it never did that on the LCD screen. So I was hoping my S5 wasn't a defect lol. Good to know.
I love my S5. But it has let me down many times. Mosrly In live concert situations. If there is smoke or flashing lights, auto focus takes a vacation. If you combine manual with autofoucus in these scenarios, its a recipe for disaster. Best to go full manual. I see people on RUclips doing focus tests. Nobody does flashing lights or smoke.
Can someone help? I have a skin tone issues with my Panasonic S1 and with S5. While shooting V-Log in 4k with 50p over HDMI to either Atomos Ninja V or Atomos Shogun Inferno I'll get blotchy skin tones with magenta blotch artifacts. Also while recording internally on SD Card with 50p | 200M | LongGoP. 50p is unusable as of now. For all who ask themselves, yes, I knows how to expose v log correctly. Josh which profile do you suggest in low light conditions? I don't think V-Log but maybe wrong
Panasonic ❤❤❤❤
For recording an interview, what settings do you recommend for autofocus? Excellent video, thanks!
Great video, very helpful as always! Thanks
P.S. On a side note, don't know why I couldn't help thinking that you'd fit perfectly in a Netflix series about the Krays :)
Hahaha the sidenote caught me off guard! Do I look like them then?
Nice what was the exact video setting for this video ?
Josh, do you record in C4k or 4K? Any preference between the two? I've been recording in C4k but don't want to shoot in that larger format if it's not worth it.
I actually shoot in regular 4K. C4K isn’t too much different tbh!
But like you said its indistinguishable
thanks a lot
You’re more than welcome 🙌🏼
Good video. Thanks. toronto canada. I use a Panasonic G9.
Hello! tell me, please, do you use an external stabilizer in your work? if so, which one (I'm talking about dji or similar)?
Will you be doing any reviews using the Blackmagic video assist 12g and BRAW/ProRes recording?
I'm definitely planning on it!
Thanks for the review. I'm looking to change from my Nikon 750 to a decent and better AF camera and I think your review might help me make the decision. Question - if you change from photo to video and vice versa, does that affect the settings? That's does it keep the old setting when you return to the previous mode?
So should shoot in 180 or 360
what about the flat profile on the s5?
It's okay, but it wouldn't be my first choice :)
@@JoshCameron That helps a lot. Thank you!
9:54 The focus peaking is pretty weak. Easy firmware fix, I would think. Thanks for your content, Josh!
Thank you for watching! Yeah I’m sure it can easily be fixed with firmware, would be nice to see that happen!
Thanks! What AF mode would you choose for for example fast bikes or a car passing by?
Gracias 😊
hello nic video very helpfull, but what lut do you use for color?
I do the colouring myself, but the conversion LUT I use for my V-Log is spoken about here:
ruclips.net/video/zIRE-8D7CUs/видео.html
Hi Josh. Do you know if we can disable the shutter button from triggering recording? Can't find it anywere... Tnxs!
What about maintianing the 180 deg shutter in bright conditions...i.e ND filters? What about using HLG mode?
Hey Kevin, maintaining 180 degrees is of course a “rule” to abide to, and I prefer not to shoot in HLG personally :)
Let’s see if you have a video about vlog and editing..
Hii Josh. Im very with my s5 but LVF screen is low brightness. Lcd and LVF is diffferent. How can i fix it ? Thx.
JOSH, Do you not have any special settings for your preferred picture profiles?
Hey William! No special settings at all, just V-Log straight out of camera and same with Cinelike D on the rare occasion I use that profile :)
@8KisOK @Coda Sessions Thanks y'all! Much appreciated!
It looks like your questions have been answered! Thanks guys for making this a place where people help out one another, I appreciate that 🙌🏼
I was wondering if you can shoot videos with the lumix at slow speed such as 1/8th 1/15th For a step printing effect is it possible ?
Wait are u using the s5 right now for this video if so wow am about to buy it now
I was indeed! My main workhorse for video 🙌🏼
hey josh i have a massive problem with my feelworld f5 pro external monitor, maybe u could help me: it has massive lag due to hdmi output is only available in 4k 25, and i CAN NOT change it to fhd on the S5, its driving me crazy. will buying a upperclass monitor solve this problem? or do u know why the resolution options are greyed out with my monitor connected?
i would love to hear your answer :)
Do you have a follow focus rig? I find it quite hard to use the focus ring on the lens especially when handheld
I don’t currently… however I’m working on a video where I build out a bigger rig … stay tuned for that😉
Hi Josh its me again, you say AF looks more natural with these settings but for me, its already so slow compared my old canon 200d that Id prefer the AF to be more reactive. So can you advice me the best settings?
Thank
If you want the AF to be more reactive then you can boost the sensitivity and speed up to around +1 or +2 :)
How to open and edit MOV 10 bit video on Windows? its not opening and when i try to convert it the quality is just awfull. what is the best way to work with it?
What about metering mode, full or centre for video?
Does the DMW XLR1 work with the S5???
Hi Josh, what happens when I have filmed in two different frame rates, one in 4k 25fps, one in 4k 50fps ? I would like to include both in the same timeline, so what timeline frame rate speed do I select at the beginning when creating a new project and what output speed do I select to make sure it plays correctly, and plays both normal motion and and slow motion ? Total beginner, cheers.
Okay so what you need to do is make a 25p timeline and then you can slow your 50p footage down to 50% speed, and your 25p footage will remain 100% speed :) Hope this helps!
@@JoshCameron thx Josh. Perfect explanation mate. Exactly what I needed.
Loving your channel and love using my new s5. Keep up the great work. Subbed for support
Has the autofocus improved at all since launch, it’s the only thing stoping me from buying it. Any advice man?
Honestly mate, I wouldn’t be so caught up on it, it’s absolutely fine for most of my use cases and the camera itself deserves so much more credit than simply “af is bad” because it is a seriously amazing body!
@@JoshCameron so for example for ameture documentary making/following a subject down a street it would be ok?
Totally! Would be just fine!
If he uses manual for paid work...then what does that tell you....I have the S5 and still not happy with the AF and have used the tips from Luca Bono as well...it's simply not good enough to rely on and why I will be making a shift to Sony after far too many years of making excuses with Lumix.
@@IronMacFitness hmm that’s interesting thank you
Hello! Can I set different volume on audio channels ? Thx!
Josh I really like your videos, but for me that I'm not english is a little bit difficult to understand still attention, because you speak so fast! 😅 I'm not saying that this is bad, but maybe for some kind of people which is not english, should do not be easy understand you, like me! Great video and thank you for your help 💪 👍 obrigado 🇵🇹
No worries, I’ll try to slow down!
When you record slo motion does your computer or editing software say the clip is 120fps or 60fps? I find I’m recording in 120fps in camera and my computer file says 60fps
When recording at 120p in S&Q mode, it slows it down in camera to whatever frame rate you set… you don’t get a 120p file unfortunately !
@@JoshCameron exactly what I thought! Thanks for the clarification!
Hi what is the setting I have to use for the Autofocus tracks the eye while filming. I mean if I want the camera to follow the model's eye when I move backward forward and the picture will not be out of focus? I cannot seem to get that. I have set AFC and human detect, but it does not focus automatically only if I press the shutter button halfway down. What am I doing wrong?
Have you got the AF Set to "works all the time' instead of 'only while recording'? That could be your issue. Also, I don;t think the S5 supports EYE AF, only face and body unfortunately
I only wish all these tutorials would what setting you are on to begin with! I am not having fun with my s5I I own it since the summer and have been at it and the colors are dark. I can't get good footage in low light. I spend way too many hrs fixing my mistakes. I might sell it and get a DSLR. This camera and I are not viibing!
If you're happy to give it one last shot, I offer 1:1 video calls and I can run you through everything you need to know to get the best results :) let me know, my email is josh@feedmecontent.com
Which lens do you use in this video
But when I press the record button, most of the noise cleans right
Yes that's totally normal. Before you hit record it does show quite noisy but then cleans up when recording :)
@JoshCameron Thanks for the response. I am use to the GH5 and it never did that on the LCD screen. So I was hoping my S5 wasn't a defect lol. Good to know.
Just what the doctor (read camera fiend) ordered.
😂 hope you found this useful mate!
@@JoshCameron it was indeed :)
the top IRE line isn't 100IRE, I think its 110.
Very handsome, but great information
Uh "NTSC" other than that this was very insightful.
Haha! I corrected my mistake with an annotation! Sorry about that bud
Holy moly you talk fast! Any chance you can slow down a bit?
Hahaha i'm working on it!
Look into the lens.
Yes Charlie, Sorry Charlie
@@JoshCameron Great video Many thanks.
It's really sad as the 4k 25p looks gorgeous. I'm on firmware 2.1 with the S1
Your content is great. I would appreciate it if you could go a little slow. It gives us time to make the change to my camera too.
Thank you very much! Of course, I'll try to slow down the delivery next time :)
What's this NSTC you speak of? 😂
