    Really good points here. Regarding augmenting available light with flash, years ago I attended a talk by the famous black & white large format photographer John Sexton. He showed a stunning image of a native ruin in the southwest U.S. that was under a deep overhang. Somebody in the audience asked how he was able to get the quality of light he did. He responded, “Well, I’m known as an available light photographer so I looked in my bag and saw two Vivitar 285s and they were available so…”

    I have this video bookmarked and I revisit this regularly. I love these check point items. Every shoot I do I use at least ONE of these techniques you show us: USE YOUR HANDS (Point#2) has been indispensable, thank you! What I find especially helpful about this video - and most of your videos - is that you relate the effect of the techniques to something we can see in our mind ... for example "Halloween Lighting". More than just tips, you help us understand what causes an effect rather than "how to get" an effect. "Dead eyes" from lack of catch light and the example scenario of being too deep into a building or shade is another great example of your teaching style. This whole video is "worth its weight in gold"!!

With a 5d mark 2 no less. 😳 But just wanted to say I’ve been following your channel from the beginning. I am practicing to be a better photographer and I've volunteered to do family portraits in my neighborhood. In the first few sessions, I made every mistake on your list, which allowed me to learn Lightroom more. Even though I knew what to do, I still got thrown off a bit.. but each session got better. So one thing I'd add to your list is practice. It's so easy to watch YT videos but getting out there and re-watching this video gave it a whole new depth.
    Also... using direct sun only works at golden hour for me. Even then it can be too bright for my subject so they get squinty eyes. The time of year makes a huge difference on every part of the available light as well.. the angle of light changes the intensity in the morning vs. evening. I use my hand to see the light also...
    Thanks for sharing this. Your photos have a really nice soft look while maintaining detail. That's pretty nice. I hope to get there.

    Omar, this is the way to go with your vids. I watch almost all of your videos because you are funny and very humble but I usually never comment. After seeing you struggle in your "failure" video I could totally see your point and hoped you would find a solution and motivation to produce content. Boy you nailed it! Videos like this are helpful to such a broad audience - beginners who learn new stuff and seasoned photographers who get reminded about things and/or also learn something new. Combined with your talent to teach and the easy vibe it's very valuable content. Keep up the good work (I can see all the work going into such a vid, e.g. digging out example pictures). Good information for those who are into photography.
    For those who just want a simple picture with the mobile-phone, set it to high speed bracketing (usually quicker if you reduce the resolution) or use interlaced-video or use an app that lets you adjust HDR levels as a post-process (achieve alien-colours and dynamic-range then change it back to normal via sliders). The sensor will capture 3 shots in very quick succession for you to overlay and adjust the effect you want for lower-resolution social-media audience who mostly don't know the difference between a good photo and a bad photo.

    As a still relatively new hobbyist photographer, this was a educational video. Living in Phoenix, Arizona, where we have 300 sunny days a year, heading for the shade does not always produce good results. You can end up with blown out backgrounds. Likewise, light reflection issues are problematic. More videos like this one please!

    These are good tips for beginners just getting into portrait photography. The hue thing is for real. I did an indoor shoot at the selfie museum in Atlanta for a friend last summer. They have different backgrounds and themes to use. One of them was a little cubical that had been, pink and white artificial flowers and leaves on the sides and top with artificial grass for the floor. I got a lot of color cast but was able to fix it in Photoshop. 8 just bought a Godox ad200 but I haven't used it yet. I have a couple of speed lights I've used before and a couple of softboxes. And a Gary Fong light sphere. That works great in small areas when you can't bring a softbox in.

    Great tips, thank you! Especially love the last point. I think people too easily fall into camps. I’m a “natural light photographer” or I’m a “strobist” etc. and of course there are many good photographers in both camps. Maybe one camp is afraid of learning another more complex skill (artificial lighting) and the other loves to acquire more gear. But the great photographer uses whatever tools available to make good pictures. Sometimes less is more but other times more is more.

    • @carrubep
      @carrubep 7 месяцев назад

      Perhaps, though I've yet to see a photographer that is good with strobes/OCF have poor natural light technique (I cannot say the opposite is true). I think once you get good with OCF, your natural light skills just get that much better as you quickly learn to understand the four elements of lighting much better and on a much steeper curve than natural lighting :)

    I'm starting in photography, and really love street and natural light portrait photography.
    But it's fun to see these points come up, as I actually started in game photography while having some knowledge of graphics rendering.
    Especially these days with ray tracing becoming more commonplace, all these points are 1:1 translateable in a lot of modern games.
    Like how you mentioned taking a shot in the shade and using the edge of where the sun hits, my mind instantly went to game lighting principles of "it bouncing around, creating colors around the subject from the objects it bounces on". So you can make use of specific objects that are a specific color to make a nice filter. Like how you can use red objects to make the light more warm.
    It clicked with me so many times with how much game photography can be translated to real life photography.
