Dioscorea Discolor (Variegated Yam) Care and Propagation in Water, Moss, and Soil - With Updates!

- The Dioscorea discolor is a variegated dioscorea hailing from Brazil and Ecuador. I daresay this is the most gorgeous plant in my collection - and also the easiest to grow with fast growth speed. The reddish and greenish hue on the leaves and the veinings make this an impressive design. I share the full care tips for this plant and show you different ways to propagate it (in sphagnum moss, soil, and water propagation), with updates of the cuttings at the end of the video as usual. If this is accessible and affordable in your area, I can’t recommend highly enough to grab it!

They so easy to propagate. Grows like a weed 🙂
All true yams will root in water from cuttings. Just imagine Dioscorea discolor used to cover the railings of a balcony! Spectacular. It does go dormant at the first sign of cold weather or shortened day length. Hardy for USDA Zones 9 - 11 Tropical. Close to the equator perhaps that won't happen. In full sunshine the backs of the leaves turn a brilliant purple.
To root difficult plants you can use willow bark tea made from willow bark and warm, not hot, water left to stew for a day. It is great for watering in woody plants that are being put in the ground from a pot.

What a beautiful plant! I haven't come across them here in Canada yet. The new growth reminds me of baby anthurium clarinervium leaves, so cute. And what a great idea using tomato cages as trellises! I never thought of that, I'm forever looking for mid-sized trellises for my plants and can never find any. Now I have to wait til spring til the shops start stocking them again 😂 Thanks for another great video!

my experience with this plant is it will grow like a weed once established in a larger pot. sometimes as fast as several inches per day. such an amazing plant!

I have this plant, my vines reach 7 feet and my leaves are about12 inches long and about 8 inches wide. Thank you for educating me. I bought the root from the local supermarket as an experiment. It was beyond successful ..invasive even lol I have to trim it back every few days or it'll get way out of control.
Oh yes its so out if control now haha but I enjoy this as a weed! 😀
I just got one! Does your go dormant in the winter if it's inside with bright light, humidity, and warm temps?
@@jovandenaut6023 Indoors it becomes a perennial and yes all house plants go dormant in winter. They need this rest to extend the life of the plant. just like us

Hi there. If it grows like a weed I suggest you also let it flower and then harvest the seed. Obviously you won't know what you will get, but this looks like an easy self-seeder.
Yeahhh I want to get into flowering and seed sowing later on in my journey. 😀 when I have more space to work with.

The green dioscorea does form caudex but Ive not seen it on this variegated one indeed… puzzling it is!
I enjoyed the video. I have a question. Is there anything to be careful about if breeding plants, which are mainly rooted in hydroponic cultivation, are transferred to an earthen pot? When I transfer and plant plants rooted in water into the soil, stems and leaves often melt down.
That depends on the species. Begonias are notoriously finickey. Also I use very airy potting mix and I keep it very wet at first, slowly watering less and less over time.
Cool plant, Haven’t seen it in the States yet, but I don’t think it would ship well :T. Hopefully it will be available in the US soon!

@@onlyplants No, she is native to Misiones, a province of Argentina where the climate is predominantly tropical, but winter affects her a lot.
Do you need to have a node to propagate or do they do so with just leaf cuttings? Sorry if you mentioned you it in the video…. I keep getting either distracted by what I’m doing or interrupted throughout the video. 🤪 I’ve played it three times so far! 🙄

@@onlyplants ahhhh ok! Thank you!!!! I didn’t see the little nubby node on yours but my eyes must be bad! I’ve got some draceana cuttings in some water and they have rooted. I changed the water instead of just adding because it smelled foul. I rinsed them in 2 parts water and 1 part peroxide. Hope that works. Do you think I should have left the cuttings out to dry before propagating in water? I’m not sure why they were starting to rot. Also you are incredibly talented at plant care! Thank you!!! 🖐

Its possible. The dioscorea discolor is a specific variety.
Finally got one! I've been searching for one ever since I saw this video. Does yours go dormant in "winter"? Can I keep it growing inside in a warm, humid, bright space?
It did go dormant but they grow back 3 times as big!

Ive seen tubers appear in other dioscoreas while the leaves are grown in mid air! Im sure you can chop single nodes and stick them to soil!

You can propagate them in moss but I dont recommend keeping them indefinitely in moss

Hi! I know why some of your props where not as succesful. it probably has to do with the fact that they were exposed to most sun and props wont root well if the vessel get a lot of light. Leafs want light but roots dont!
It would be an interesting experiment to do… clear and covered glass water propagation

Love your channel but I gotta be honest I hate it sometimes cos you make me think about all those lovely plants all the time. Sometimes it gets so bad I actually go to the nearest nursery at my place just to get the baby version of it (within what I can afford). I bought a baby ficus elastica yellow yesterday evening not noticing many of the leaves has this small brown dots on it. I hope its not a diseased plant....I'm so hopeless when it comes to understanding plants
You can always treat it. Neem oil treats pests, bacteria, and fungus

Sean, “not good for the environment”, “I don’t recommend this”, so why do you use these products?
There is no alternative. I have 3000 pots of plants in my collection in a very tight space. For the average home growers with less than 100 potted plants I would discourage it and go with natural means.
