Raphidaphora Tetrasperma Care and Propagation (with updates)

- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- In this video I go over the care and propagation of the raphidaphora tetrasperma or also known as the mini monstera. An accident broke my plant in half, but no sweat because I know I can propagate this into multiple plants and in about a year time I’ll have 10 of these at full size. I show you a 5 weeks update on the propagation and you can see just how fast growing this plant is! They are an easy houseplant with minimal care and can tolerate a wide variety of conditions. They also look good for styling your interior space.

Oh my God...marry me Sean...You Cook!!You are intelligent!sweet!you're funny!you've got loads of beautiful plants!!...you are such a gem!!!😁😀👌
Haha thank you so much. I love cooking!
You missed it when Sean said, if you aren’t a plant, don’t hit on him.
@@janetshepherd9062 ha ha ha I’m new here. Like the exchanges 😄
@@onlyplants ....love love love.....make a vlog on your cooking too....hi sean!!!
Ha ha ha
I feel you. It's so easy to get lost when gardening. I always tell myself just 30-60 minutes a day (I have a day job) but I find myself spending 4-6 hours once I get started. Waaah!
And I agree with the no measuring bit. There's just no other way to go. that's why I'm a great cook but a mediocre baker. LOL
Time stops in the garden. It happens.
Just remember that it’s very good for your brain when you are working with your plants the more you work with them the better for you
Me with my WFH job😂😅
Sean: set them free, put them next to a tree!
Me, living in Switzerland: I don't think that's gonna work for me
lol lol. Switzerland outdoors is so very gorgeous without raphidaphoras haha. Maybe you can let them climb a ladder or your bedroom wall instead 😌
I'm in Australia and where I am it sometimes gets hot and dry outside and it would kill cuttings of this plant. So the total opposite here!

Finally got one as a Valentine's gift for myself.
Thats the spirit! ❤️
Not gonna lie, I was hoping to see Sean cook some Thai food at the end of the video
Me tooo. Such a a talented and versatile person. I’d love to see you cook and Thai food tutorial. I think us plant nerds could learn just as much and absolutely love it.
Hoho this video will be 3 hours look because Thai food takes so long to prepare. 😅
@@onlyplants I would watch an "everything but plants" channel too. I would love to see your cooking even if it takes forever haha :)
Hi Sean, watching your videos for the first time. How do you spell the black product that you added to the mix?? Ur videos are very educational. Keep up the good work..
Hello… I’m wondering if that was burnt rice hull? Do DM me on instagram @bo.tan.ist for me to answer better as youtube does not notify me when you reply to my comment 😀
Love that you always give us propagation and update in one video 😊
Thank you. Ive got tons of these videos on the way and is filming every day 😌😌
Wow. I've never seen a tetrasperma with leafs sooo big! This is my favorite plant. How did it get so big leafed? 😳
With proper care and time they can get big 😀 also do let them climb
attached to the moss pole the leaves get bigger even Pothos do this
I just bought Raphidophora Tetrasperma, it came with a porous soil inside a plastic pot. I am very new at this hobby, so please forgive me for basic questions.. I don’t want to kill them 😁 I keep the RT inside my apt, next to a balcony window, facing east.
- How often should I water them?
- Is 18cm diameter pot big enough?
- Any recommendation in fertilizing them? (i.e how often, what brand).
Thank you so much, love your videos!
How often you should water them depends on your temperature, light levels, humidity, airflow, potting mix used, pot size, pot type, and age of plant 😀
I would pay attention to their leaves and media to see about watering. The media need to be bone dry between watering. Dry crisphy leaves or droopy leaves would suggest underwatering. Yellowing leaves or excessive “sweating” of water from the leaves will suggest overwatering.
Check out my fertilizer video to see some guide on fertilising 😀
“I dunno who brought the spider mites” lol maybe your dad? Lol so you can finally get rid of your plants that he doesn’t like llol 😂
Oh yay! its here! waiting for THIS! Totally will enjoy this during my lunch break!
part 2 of comments - Thai Food, cooking - ALL my favs too! ME too NEVER measure when cooking or mixing soil wahahahahahaaaa.... maybe its us asians! JUST got a huge mini monstera as my previous 1 got some leave fungal infection which I chopped till 2 tiny leaves. So decided to self care / treat self to a huge pot/plant which I will USE THIS VIDEO to propagate oh yay! HOW timely!!!!!
I’m attaching my Ginny to a moss pole right now but I’d much rather have some of you Thai food Sean! 😀
Lol 😅
Holy moly that tetrasperma is freaking MASSIVE. Mine snapped too but I actually managed to get it to heal by bending it back and taping it back together tightly. After a month or two, I took off the tape and it was completely healed like a grafted tree branch!
😀
Wow, your RT leaves are very large; there's hope for mine on a moss pole.
They do get bigger on a moss pole but theres a maximum size they can get to 😌
When you cut that first huge piece and tossed it on the floor, I felt that! 😭😲😰 Your plant is gorgeous, mine is just young but I'm excited to make a pole like yours and get it growing. 💚🌱
Scissor Happy!!!!
Glad to see you back on Insta and again spoiling us with 2 videos!!!!
Thank youu
Holy moly!!! Those big leaves!
Can you make a video of variegated tetra please?
I dont have the variegated ones yet 😅 they have become very affordable though so maybe I should get one
Will a damaged root node still propagate? I was drying and applying rooting hormones to the trimming and the root node bent but didnt break off completely. Wondering if it will still propagate or not likely? Thanks.
Better send pics on instagram so I know what you are talking about. Usually it can sprout if it has a growing bud.
hello Sean ...only plants community...SOS 🤣 my mini monstera is reverting back to splitless leaves...dunno what to do any tips would be super appreciated.
Then your plant needs more light.
Could be lack of light, or nutrients, or maybe it has severe root damage/pest attack.
@@onlyplants I moved it to a se facing window and repotted....hopefully it will go back to splitting its foliage .
@@littlenightbird6341 😊 thanks
The moss pole that you are pertaining to looks like jute tied around a cylindrical surface. Am I correct?
You could say that. There are different designs, construction, and materials for the poles. I use all kinds depending on what I can get my hands on. Those filled with moss tend to be better…
The tetrasperma has been on my wish list for months... i regret not buying it before the pandemic, the prices went up and it become kinda hard to find ='(. Anyway, the roots from the water and spaghnum prop were beautiful! Do you ever use root hormones for cuttings? or just let the plants do their thing
Hello, I dont use hormones or fertilizers when rooting 😌
Good timing. Repotting mine today and giving her a pole!
Awesome it should take over very quickly. 😌
Can u link where you bought the soap from???? Or other kinds that are similar???
I make them. And unfortunately, I dont know where to buy them 😅😅 the ingredients are in a video titled “insecticidal bar soap”
Sean, did you make your own insecticidal soap? Or did you purchase it from somewhere? How clever and also relaxing to watch you wash the leaves 🥰
I make my own. Do check my instantagram highlights for more info 😀
Whaooo Sean, I think I'm a good cook. But looking at what you cooked, my goooooooooodnessss!
Damn, you plant, you cook, you do business and you are good with dogs.
Well, well What else that you can do? Flying an airplane? 😜
Haha I cant fly airplanes Im too afraid of heights!
The aerial roots on my one are not growing onto the moss pole. The don't seem to grow. Some are touching the moss pole, but others not possible. How can you encourage growth of the aerial roots?
Mist that aerial root several times a day, or increase humidity. Or tie it such that the aerial root is kissing the moss pole, and then mist the moss pole 😀
Y my tetrasperma like not growing…i have it like few months already but it still the same like when i get it…nothing change…
Could be that its still propagating away or encountering root rot? Or try to increase light and fertilizer if all is well
I propagate mine in Leca water
That works too 😀
Very helpful. Thank you 🙂
I got a plant at Home Depot that was labeled as a Philodendron Ginny for $15 that I am pretty sure is a R. Tetrasperma. It is a decent size and has been growing beautifully in the month that I have had it so far.
Oh ya they are known as the Ginny somehow
What a massive RT! I have one and the leaves are about a quarter of those! Are there difference types of raphidaphora tetrasperma?
Their leaves get larger when they climb. Also good light and some nutrients help ❤️
This video came up in the perfect timing l just got a rooted cutting of a raphidophora tetrasperma 😁
I have a monstera peru cutting in sphagnum moss and I'm so afraid of letting it rot. 🙄
Ooo monstera Perus are quite easy to propagate but they do grow a bit slow!
@@onlyplants and I'm not the most patient person. Two months still no roots 😴
Lol yes half of us find it satisfying and half of us is horrified. I think I may be the latter.
Rather than washing them as you did with a soup they not just be ditch in a hydrogen peroxide solution and left to drip dry?
It is quite possible too 😀
Would it be possible to hang this type of plant?
Super helpful video! 🪴
You can but if they hang down their new subsequent leaves will diminish in size. Which is not a bad look I think.
Sean- part time business man, botanist, and now chef!
Any tips for regrowing r. tetrasperma when all the leaves have fallen? asking for a "friend" hahaha
You can cut individual nodes and put them on sphagnum moss with the aerial root side down. New growing eye should appear in 3-4 months
I love the way you follow up with all your repots....and keep up updates....I am a new follower and I enjoy your touch.
Thank you so much, welcome to the channel! Im determined to master the propagation of all species and sharing them here 🥺
Ya Ampuunnnn cangkir ayam jago nya mauuuuu
Haha jadul banget ya
What the soap is that. Where can i get ?
I like the unscripted.
Learning a lot here.
Thanks for the video.
Can you tell me where yo purchased your "soap"? Thank you!
I make them 😀 theres a video titled “insecticidal bar soap” on my channel. And unfortunately I havent got permits to export them
Can you provide a link for the insecticidal bar soap please?
I cannot ship internationally 🥹 its now allowed by Indonesian law
The leaves are so big they're basically Monstera 😂😂
Is that big white plant at 1:24 in the background a caladium?
Yepp thats a caladium
All the snipping, so many plants!!! That's what I do too
😀😀
can you make a cooking video? Your food looks great

Could be overwatering but do send pics to my IG so we can look at it

Hi, may i know where can i buy the soap you used to wash your plant? What's the name again? Thanks very much
Hello in singapore @littlebotany carries it. In Indonesia its on tokopedia store: sevensagestore 😀
@@onlyplants thank you. I'm in Malaysia and i wonder if i can find it online on Shopee. What's the name of the soap?
Re: chicken mug - yes I know what you mean! I have 2 chicken ceramic bowls here in SG with me that I brought from my home in Malaysia !!
That mug makes me smile every time 😌
Thanks for this video - can I ask what insecticide do you use/does it stop thrips and spider mites?
I have a video titled pest control. In there I show how I control pests using natural and chemical means
Jeezus man another video. You better slow down before you crash!
Haha thank you. Im doing alright!
can you give a recipe of the soap?
Hello it is coconut oil, neem oil, activated charcoal and peppermint essential oil. My business partner wont let me release the ratios but if you have experience with soap making its very very easy to come up with ratios that work 😌
I’m definitely in the horror and disbelief category lol I was cringing watching this!
But nearly all the cuttings survived haha. 😅🙌🏻
The chopping sound is so satisfying
Yes I love it too. 😀 and the smell is amazing too
I love that you recycle everything 🥰
I never use pearl lite and it works. I get a new leaf a week on my Raphidaphora Tetrasperma's. So must be doing something right.
Sean, thank you for your content. I really enjoy your videos. Quick question though: In your aroid mix, you add burnt rice hulls. These are not available in the U.S. Is there something else I can use or add?
Hello, activated charcoal and horticultural charcoal should do the trick 😌
@@onlyplants Thank you for taking the time to answer my question. The plant community really IS the best!
hey sean! i love your videos (both for the plants & because i miss traveling to asia & know we won't make it out there this year!) :( you addressed a question in this video that i've had forever & haven't been able to find the answer to but can you clarify (or point me to another video if you already covered this)- when a propagated monstera grows a new leaf, you mentioned that you have to be careful where you cut this new leaf off & that you have to be mindful of where the growth point is or the original cutting is "done" & won't grow any new leaves. can you expand/clarify where to properly cut? i couldn't tell where the growth point is that you were referring to. thanks in advance- i haven't been able to find this online anywhere! :)
The growth point will be exactly where the node is, somewhere along the “ring”
@@onlyplants gotcha- thanks!
Do you sell the soap? My philodendron I got 3 months ago is growing so fast, and I can see something is making the leaf looks funny 😢 it’s getting cold here in Denmark so should I wait to propagate until summer ? All of my plants are inside but there are no heat close to them so they stand together.
Okey u just said what it was, to much water 💦
If you can give it decent light (artificial
Or natural) and also decent humidity its ok to propagate over winterz
Having them close together can create nice humidity around them but they might need some warmth… I wouldnt go below 18 degrees celcius for most species… although some can take a bit colder than that
💚💚💚
Can a node grow without leaves?
Absolutely, as long as it has a growing eye
Those roots! So many, impressive
What is the plant at 1:22 with the white leaf/green veins? I've never seen anything like this!
That is a caladium 😀 that white color is one of the most common ones
@@onlyplantsthanks- my husband guessed the same- they just look far bigger there than here in Buffalo, NY :)
Is that a moss pole or just some type of rope you used for the pole? I want to make my own moss poles if possible. Please help! 😁
Its actually made with coconut coir. There are tons of moss pole types available… maybe i should create an episode on this soon 😅
@@onlyplants that would be amazing. I've seen jute rope polls as well. Do those work too?
Great video, thank you so much!! I just got my first, I am super excited seeing all your growth in just 10 months!!!
your repotting/propagation videos are so therapeutic!! tried propagating using perlite as there are not many long aerial roots yet. also, how can i encourage fenestrations on its leaves? yours have pretty ones! I've had mine for months in medium to bright indirect light but it only kept on producing juvenile leaves, but the older leaves on the lower part already had fenestrations. love your videos!
Do let it climb up something, and increase light, and fertlise lightly to encourage more mature leaves
@@onlyplants got it thanks!
I am not getting aerial roots. Maybe have to wait for humid weather in the summer?
Yeah they need a bit of humidity
Misting the bits where aerial roots come out from daily helps too (but do not mis leaves)
Do you make the soap by yourself?
Yes I doo
That Raf is a beauty. All your plants are beautiful...you are knowledgeable about plants and nurturing...your cooking also looks delicious...and to top it off you are handsome!! Hehe
Thank you so much 😌🙏🏽😌
Dinner looks great! Fish especially! Cooking videos plz!
Can it propagate on a leafless node?
Yes you can so long as its a healthy node and theres a growing eye on it
Thank you again for info.... I like your clay pots. I use lot of clay pots specially succulents and cactus.
Thank youu. Cacti and succulents do appreciate terracotta as they dry much faster 😌
sean could you explain those node growth points a little more in detail? i bought a brasil cutting a month ago and just potted it up but there’s no new growth (only roots) and the petioles are flat, not round. does that mean they already put out that new shoot before and can’t again?
Do send me a pic of what you are talking about via Instagram DM @bo.tan.ist as I cannot picture it in my head 😊
👏👏👏👏👏👏Your the Best !!!!!!!
🙈🙈
I accidentally scratched the growing point of my cutting. It wasn't a big scratch, nor a big growing point, but now the "white spot" has a tiny black dot that is getting bigger. Should i give up already? : ....)
Let it grow out, if it doesnt make it the plant should put out a new branch from a node below
onlyplants! 🤣🤣🤣 love it!
😀😀
Hi Sean .. ive been following u for quite a while and loving all your videos. Ive got some qustion though ... firstly , in moss propagstion how do you water them , just flow the water throughly or u spray it ? Cos moss tends to keep the water in moss .. so it wont get root rot .. and secondly in shade and semi indoor area with ypu aroid mix , how often would you recomend on watering ? Thx a lot bro .. really apreciate it !!
Hello, first of all I leave my moss propagations out in the rain... so I must admit they are overwatered all the time and dont recommend to anyone to do this. You should only mist sphagnum moss and keep them on the dry side but humid and slightly damp as this is what will encourage the roots.
Great info once again! I air-layered my Raph in sphagnum moss a couple of weeks ago so seeing your moss propagation update makes me feel positive with mine 😊
You can easily cut it and stick it in water, this worked allways for me, and it don't take long, 1 till 3 weeks to root. I have it 10 years now btw. Greetings 🙂
They are easier than monsteras in my experience. I have a feeling that air layered bit must have taken off!
