    Marantas quickly became some of my favorite plants to keep as a new plant mom. They don't mind a little extra care, they push new growth non stop, even the ones located in the interior of my home, far away from any windows, next to standard, artificial lit table lamps and they don't seem to mind the long, dark, dry months of winter, here the Midwest part of the US is known for. Super tolerant, beautiful plants to grow and watch, in my experience. I LOVE watching how dramatically they close and open their leaves each day to night.

      Whoaaa thats amazing to hear that they are winter/low-light tolerant. 😌

    To my knowlegde, the brown/yellowing tips also is the result of overfertilizing, or hard tapwater, so it's best to use rainwater :)

    • @therootofallthings
      @therootofallthings 3 года назад +6

      True @Chris . My Calatheas wants distilled or rain water or else... 😱

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  3 года назад +11

      Yes it can be that also... however I do give mine rain water. Overwatering and underwatering will cause brown/yellowing tips too. For those living in city tap water thats heavily treated... its worth finding out whats in the water as it can cause damage to leaves 😌😌

    I raise goats and use a few balls of goat poop in some of my plants and liberally in my outdoor garden. It is a slow release fertilizer that does not need composting. I think it is as good as worm castings and for me it's free.

    Love your videos! I'm in need of help with mine, the leaves are growing so small and it has many "hooks" growing from nodes. They are covered in cataphylls and I cannot figure out what they are. I'm wondering if they are trying to root and start over because the plant is in distress.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад

      Ooh those hooks may be flowers trying to sprout. I always cut them off before they had the chance to bloom as they take up so much energy from the plant, causing smaller leaves

    I’m confused. Many others say to keep the soil damp and not to let it dry out. I have a new red maranta which I sit on wet pebbles and I have been keeping the soil damp. It seems to be doing very well. I’ve had it two months and it has 3 new leaves coming up. I haven’t fertilized cuz it’s new from the nursery. I’ve never propagated and I also haven’t kept one alive very long. I’m certain I over watered the previous plants or they didn’t like where they were placed. I’m going to be mindful with the one I have now and I love all your advice.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  Год назад

      Oh this depends on where you live. I live in high humidity and high heat southeast asia. This will rot if its kept perpetually damp without drying out. Also it depends on the condition with which the plant was grown in before. Roots actually adapt to moisture level, a sudden change may kill the roots.

    Hiya!! Love your video! My maranta interestingly crisps up when I underwater mine- but i water mine more often than other plants because I live in a colder, drier climate and the only time it doesnt die is when I water quite a bit!! 🤣🤣im an underwaterer so I killed a few marantas before finally deciding that overwatering (in my tendencies) actually kept them alive. But that could also be because I have less humidity than you so I just water the top of the soil and it evaporates to become humid

      Hello, you are right, plant care looks veryyy different in the tropics. Our biggest concern here is too much humidity and rot 😅

    I accidentally broke a stem but thankfully with a node 😂 gonna just poke it back into the soil and hope for it to survive ✨

    I really love this plant! The brownish red spots are stunning and the fade to green as well. This year or earlier I finally learned to give it what it wanted, but in the heat of August I found it just sagging. Not sure if I'm over watering, but we'll see.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад

      If you suspect it is overwatered, it propbably is 😀 they like to dry out almost completely between watering (but not for long)

      @@onlyplants Yep, either angiosperms or gymnosperms. I remember my botany. .. But .. I can't seem to find the spores/seeds being sold anywhere. I used to have them in Boston, and do remember them flowering as well. It is just that here in Pakistan they are so very expensive. That is why I am looking for a seed source for them.
      Is there any way you can try to harvest some?

    Cow, goat, even horse dung is actually really good for the plants (should be dried or it will stink) 😊 in the farm, they scrape the soil where the animals poop and add it in the soil for nutrients. Like vermicast!

      Its good for the soil if you can stand the smell and risk of potential disease. I would also wash my hands thoroughly each time after handling the soil 😌
