    Hi Sean you’re actually my inspiration in doing youtube because I don’t really have an avenue of sharing my love for plants. I am on the budget side of things thu so my collection is a little conservative. I’m really happy that we share the same love for plants and I learned so much from you. Thank you! Monstera Devil's backstory is so fascinating! At first glance it's hard to imagine how such a plant exists, but then after hearing the backstory you realize that it was a step by step process of selecting cuttings and careful cultivation. Amazing. Love this information dense content.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  4 месяца назад

      Yes, hope this inspires people to strategically cut and selectively breed. The more people do it, the more chance of mutation.

  • @nackedgrils9302

    Hi Sean! As a Monstera deliciosa collector, I really enjoyed this video even though I knew almost all of the varieties already. It's great to get some background info like where they came from but also more precise descriptions that a single picture or video can't convey (like the fact that new leaves emerge a certain colour but turn a different colour when they harden). These are the details that will allow us to differenciate between the ever-increasing number of varieties that are flooding the market at the moment.
    I'm thankful that awareness around mutations is making more and more people collect them instead of them being tossed into compost but I wish that the prices overseas were more reasonable. I'm in Canada and usually find variegated large-form Monsteras for around $60-$200 from local sellers, most of them are sports with no name. The most expensive ones are imports and range from $500 to $2000 but there aren't many people who are ready to pay that much for a plant around here. Tropical plant collecting is a hobby that's most popular in the lower to medium classes while rich people usually find a different specific niche of plants to collect.

      I was at the International Adroit Society Expo and heard and saw great talks about how these varieties were discovered names. The differences may be subtle but they are definitely authentic. Naming them is similar to names of culinary dished discovered or created.

    • @juliescesar
      @juliescesar 3 месяца назад

      No as easy as you make it sound, there's lots of work done and lots and lots of time spent before a name is given. I don't agree with all these silly names but who am I to say, I do believe everyone wished they could create their own variety though, is fun playing with genes but time gets in the way.

    EMS is actually a common chemical mutagen to induce mutagenesis in (mostly) ornamental plant. To obtained right amount of concentration LD50 was used (50% died, 50% survived). And if the breeder was lucky they will find a stable mutated plants. Seems like legit for me. My only questions is, why they are not patented their findings. So the others couldnt produce their plants through TCs, and it will maintain its rareness

    Great video on something that honestly seems completely overwhelming to me. I really feel like a total unsophisticated dolt because I simply do not see any difference between most of these plants, and certainly not anything that might warrant paying thousands of dollars per leaf because some off-color splotches are in a different spot on the leaf. I’m kind of stuck in the old school mentality of there being the normal version of a monstera and a ‘variegata’ version in which the plant lacks chlorophyll in a few spots. Thanks also for highlighting a young up-and-coming collector such as Joshua Sia. He seems like he will go far in this industry.

    I can’t help but wonder why Borsigiana and Deliciosa could not be name as the same variety (Deliciosa) and just be different cultivars - just like you wrote “Monstera Deliciosa ‘Borsigiana’”. The large form one should also have a cultivar name in my opinion.

    • @zeno3630

      Once they get mature they grow differently the deliciosia grows waaay larger. Thats why they're normally called large form and small form. Also I think they came from different areas

    I bought a Thai 2 years ago from when it was tiny but it looked different then the others. Now the leaves are mostly white , cream the rest is green and mint specs split of 1/3 of the leaf lol. It grew a lot slower than the other one I bought that day and way different looking. Is there a Thai Quad color ? lol 😂 . The white , cream , green and mint are very obvious. Every leaf comes out roughly the same 😅

    I'm sorry, say again?. "400,000 thai baht", OMFG !!!!!!!! AUD $17,000. I had to check ChatGpt for ""Thao Thong Kip Ma" (ท้าวทองกีบม้า) ". I think ChatGPT got it wrong in this plant context, "refers to a historical figure in Thai culture, often celebrated as the "Queen of Thai Desserts." Thao Thong Kip Ma, also known as Maria Guyomar de Pinha, was a woman of Japanese-Portuguese-Bengali descent who lived during the Ayutthaya period. She introduced many traditional Thai desserts with influences from Portuguese cuisine, such as foi thong (golden threads) and thong yip (flower-shaped sweets). Her influence on Thai desserts has left a lasting legacy in Thai culinary culture."
