    This was a beautiful video! Absolutely amazing to see the most tiniest fraction of movements of these plants in the time lapse that would go unseen with the naked eye, nature is constantly moving! They looked to have real purpose in trying to grab that stick! I would love to see you make a time lapse of the Hoya plant to show just how much these can actualy move about over the course of one day! One of my Hoya is wrapping its tendrils around my grow rack, even though I untwine it, it persists on leaning over and then grabbing on to it again, its funny! I'm sure during the night it's having a party!
    Enjoyed this video its stunning footage Daz, and really makes you go "wow" and always watch on TV screen! 😊🌟😊🌟😊🌟👍🌵

      Thank you so much, Claire 😊 Yeah I’d love to capture some time lapse of the Hoya, especially the flowers opening as well as they developed pretty quick. Is amazing just how much plants move but that movement can’t be seen with the naked eye. Enjoy making time lapses but they are a lot of work and time consuming to make lol. Thank you for watching and commenting as always, Claire. Have a wonderful day from Edith & myself 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜

      @@Cactimania 🤯🤣 Yes totally agree with that...time lapse is time consuming! I attempted some time lapse on a few cactus, also used it quickly for a video I'm editing currently on my Lithops... but only used it for a few minutes for my Lithops...its just amazing what you capture in a short space of film time (a few minutes or half hour or so, in my case) that you don't see when just looking, so when you create those longer time lapses Daz, it's really appreciated the effort you go to, which sometimes you don't see on even the best nature type documentary TV shows. 😊👌

      @CactusCove I agree, it really shows so much purpose and intentionality! That's what I like the most with this species! I can feel it even in real life with my own diosorea elephantipes. When I leave it for an hour and come back again, I can see how the vine has spun around in its search for something to hold on to 🌿🌿

  • @sisselalmgren4396

    So cool to see! My own elephant foot grown from seed in 2020 is growing a new vine right now after a long dormancy period. I love to look at timelapses because it makes me appreciate the movements more when I look at my plant and see it grow in real time. The circular movements of the vine searching for something to hold on to takes a couple of hours. After seeing time lapse videos I can sort of translate in my head what the movement would looks like in a timeframe more perceptible to us humans.

    I was blown away by your dedication and patience filming these plants, Sweetheart! I know how long it took you to film the footages and edit them. Your passion for your craft is truly remarkable. ❤️ I loved how the caudices plumped up and their vines danced searching for the canes. The heart-shaped leaves are telling you how much they love you too. 🥰 They may not be the rarest nor the most expensive plants we have in our collection, but they are definitely special. Well done, Sweetheart! I am always proud of your videos! ❤️🤗😘💚

    I had to have a second look at the vid for a number of reasons,
    First the shape and colour of the leaves are very impressive
    And the information is great.
    I also had a look around to see if there was that many for sale and no.
    There was seeds for sale but what a price! Look after the one's you
    Have as I would say yours are priceless, Bill.

    Well! What a amazing vid,most enjoyable, so thanks for that.
    I have been watching a few vids lately (as you can imagine)
    And none come up to this standard.
    I just couldn't believe have big this type of plants could get to
    When seeing the second example of a mature plant,crazy!
    Just how much work and dedication went into looking after
    That was mind boggling. Still,a small vine is the first sign?
    And make sure before you take your hands out your pockets,lol
    A great bit of time lapsed vid at the end to your usual high standard. I have not
    Seen this type of succulent for sale,so I imagine not that common,
    Thanks again Daz,Bill.

    FANTASTIC!!!! They started out looking like little UFO flying saucers!!😂 the change was very dramatic!!! Especially with the epic music and photography!!! Yeah!! That's what I'm talking about!!! Had one of these many years ago. Only had it about 3 years. Then it dried up. A nice one about 5 inches across. Flat like a tortoise! Isn't it funny how vines , as soon as they are growing, start searching?! Searching for support some how. The thing I think I may have done wrong is let it dry out in winter. Do they grow more in the spring and summer, or fall & winter? Even though I had one, I don't think I really knew how to care for it . so I never bought another one, even though I've see them in recent time on line. From Morris park in the Ozarks ,To the U.K. & Singapore, help a great day!!! Peace,Love,Plants✌💖🌵🌸🌴💐🌲🌺🍀🌻🌿🌹😀👍

      Thank you so much, Clyde 😊 Haha yeah I said to Edith they look like little buried UFOs 🛸😂 Yes it’s cool how they sense there’s something there for them to climb up. That’s a shame you lost your one. These are classed as winter growers, now these have woken up they should keep their vines all the way through to early spring and can put out multiple vines as well. You should definitely give them another go 👍🏻 Thank you for watching and commenting as always my friend, have a wonderful day from Edith & myself to you and Deb 🌵☀️🌼🌸🌺🏜

    I water mine a little when they are dormant. one I have had for 20 years now and it's reliably dormant for about 5 months every spring and summer.

    Another great informative video! How often do you raise the caudex after starting the repotting process after two years in that orange pot? Do you end up trimming the vines each year? Cool time elapsed video dancing!!! So they are dormant in summer, good to know as I recently acquired one and just started to shoot out new vines. Thanks.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  Год назад +1

      Thank you 😊 Yes as the caudex grows you can raise them. During their first year they were completely buried but it’s a good idea to keep them buried with a gritty substrate like lava rock instead of soil otherwise they could rot. Yes they’re usually dormant during the hotter months and grow their vines in the cooler months. I trim the vines as the leaves turn completely brown and fall off. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜

    • @Cactimania

    Great video, I appreciate the effort you put into these videos, it looks amazing. A quick question for you, it seems you slightly changed your potting mix you adding zeolite and no worm castings too (your last mix for succulents that I've seen was 1part Innes#2; 1part scoria lava rock; 1part pumice(3-5mm); 1part kyodama; 0.5 worm castings)any specific reason for that?

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +2

      Thank you, glad you enjoyed 😊 I use the zeolite now as I’ve ran out of lava rock and can’t find a supplier of it that’s selling it for a reasonable price. Zeolite has very similar properties to lava rock, nice and porous and drys out fast. I don’t have much worm castings left so want to save that for a few other plants I’m planning on repotting soon. Thank you for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    What a beautiful time lapse. And the detailed information. Thank you so much. Absolutely loved it.
    I have purchased one recently and wanted to know about the care of it. I still haven't received it, so don't exactly know the size.
    If you don't mind, I would like to ask a few questions about it....
    I'm from Mumbai, India, pretty tropical and a coastal city, we don't really have very cold winter's but extremely hot and humid summers.
    1) You mentioned that they go dormant in summers and we shouldn't keep on watering them, so should I stop watering during the summers completely?
    2) is the watering routine different during the winter's for you?
    Thank you for your time in advance and also for taking pains to make such an amazing informative video 🙏🏽

      Thank you so much 😊 The general rule for these is if they have their vines their active, if they don’t they’re dormant. It’s recommended you don’t water them if they don’t have their vines, but I have watered mine occasionally when they’re supposed to be dormant as the caudex on them shrivelled quite substantially. When they’re larger they can sustain themselves much better during their dormant period. I think yours will do well there, just keep the caudex out of direct sun. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌸🌼🌺🏜

      @Cactimania thank you so much again for your prompt reply.
      As I type this, the caudex is sitting next to me, at least 2 inches or more in circumference. I'm so excited about this particular one. I had acquired seeds but due to lack of knowledge, miserably failed in getting them germinated.
      There is no active growth, though the roots look shriveled and not as dense as the ones you removed from those tiny pots in the start of the video.
      No direct sunlight and no watering yet. And will keep a watch on the caudex, if shrinking or not.
      I'm so glad to have clicked your video link on this amazing and beautiful Dioscorea Elephantipes and got the caudex too within few hours.
      Much much thanks. Will binge watch your other videos too on other plants. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😁

    Wow. Thank you for an amazing and informative video.
    These are stunning plants. I’ve just bought one from the garden centre. I had no clue what it was, so here I am, after researching.
    I need some advice if possible please.
    The plant was sold without soil. It’s just a caudex, with no visible roots and one single healthy (green) stem. How do I pot it without a root system, and how is it even alive?

      Thank you 😊 Hmm not sure about that. Also they're supposed to be dormant this time of year, if you're in the northern hemisphere. I would place it on some soil and just monitor it and check for new root growth. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜

    @Cactimania were the 2 year olds in 2 inch pots and moved up to 4 inch pots. I started mine in 2 inch ones. And now I'm scared I started too small 🙄

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад

      Yeah about that. I should have potted these up sooner really, they were in these small pots for too long, but since being repotted they’ve really taken off. Some are now starting to get that characteristic turtle shell pattern on them. If yours have vines and are actively growing don’t be afraid to pot them up into bigger pots. Do you think John Innes #2 (not available where I live) could be replaced with coco coir and worm castings? I do have perlite, charcoal, pumice, sand, and gravel.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  Год назад

      Yeah you can use coco coir. I use that for some plants as well and they do well in it. Just try and find out if it’s been washed with fresh water or not. If it’s been washed with salt water I’d avoid it. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌺🌼🏜

    the "dead" one looks like the roots all dessciated away? ive had that happen with some of my plants

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +1

      Yeah most likely. When I first got that one I left it in its old soil it came with, which wasn’t the best and I didn’t know much about these plants back then. Hopefully it recovers, though. No sign of a vine yet but fingers crossed 🤞🏻 Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    I recently bought one online and it was shipped bare root. Any advice on watering now that it’s been repotted. Mine are a bit smaller than yours. Caudex seems soft like an old potato. Has several leaves but I noticed today a couple leaves are turning yellow. Planted in mostly inorganic mix of pumice decomposed granite and a bit of organic matter. Could transplanting cause dormancy? I have several adeniums so know these caudex plants can be tricky.

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +1

      A little drop of water should be ok, the caudex shouldn’t really be soft but rather firm like bark. Some of the leaves on mine are starting to turn yellow, shrivel up and drop, over the next couple of months here in the UK they’ll start to go back into their spring/summer dormancy. If the leaves drop does that mean it is going into dormancy and I should stop watering until leaves start growing?

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +1

      Pretty much, yes. Mine are now shedding all their leaves and once they’re all dried up I’ll cut the old vine off and won’t water them again until they put out new ones. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    What would you say you’re potting soil percentage consist off?

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +1

      For these plants it’s a 75% mineral mix and 25% organic. That’s around the same I use for most of my plants, although some others can be as much as an 85% mineral mix. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵🌼☀️🌺🌸🏜

    So at summer time don’t water them at all??

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +1

      Only a small amount if their caudex is very wrinkled. When they have no vines it means they’re dormant. Thank you for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜

    How do you know if it's out of dormancy?

    • @Cactimania
      @Cactimania  2 года назад +1

      They’ll grow vines. Usually when they don’t have a vine they’re dormant. Thanks for watching and commenting 🌵☀️🌼🌺🏜
