  • After two years of no growth my Elephant foot vine (Dioscorea elephantipes) has finally come out of dormancy. In this video I explain what has happened to this plant over the last two years and look at the new growth that it has put on this winter. I also film some time lapse footage of its growth to show how it grows over time.

I love your video series. I just got a second one. The first one unfortunately died on me. Now I have a grow light, it seems to be doing better.

I never let mine dry out completely, even while they are dormant. That way they start growing again after a few weeks or months.
I have them in pumice with only a few percent coir, though.

These plants can have very long dormant periods and it can vary with some dormant periods being a few weeks and others being over a year. My plant was once dormant for about two years, but then grew again. Make sure the soil is kept mostly dry to avoid rot, giving it a little water and cooler temperatures can encourage growth, but be careful as overwatering will cause rot whilst the plant is dormant.

My friend, so when is the best timing to propagate it's seed? It is summer now in Hong Kong. Or wait till winter to propagate it's seed?

As its a winter growing plant your best waiting until the weather cools down in autumn before planting. Ideally 25c or less.

I live in southern California. My youngest one is growing so well right now. I bought one from a collector and his is dormant right now. so im very curious to why one is dormant while the other is growing at the same time??

Their dormancy does seem fairly random, my plant was dormant for two years, and now its growing again after a dormancy of only a few months. They generally go dormant when its hot and dry, but that's not always the case.

There you Go! Surprise surprise, it looks as if it's still in the same pot,
Was you in anyway tempted to try a report after a certain time,
Or existing knowledge said just leave it alone, good luck with it
    In the future, Bill.

I had repotted it when it went dormant two years ago, so over those two years it hadn't grown any roots into the new soil so there wasn't any need to repot the plant again until it has grown into the new soil. I could repot it again once it becomes dormant later this summer, but the pot is getting pretty big now making it more difficult to find a space for the plant, once I clear out my conservatory a little more I may repot it again. Although I do find that it does well even in a relatively small pot, the issue of larger pots is the compost dries out slower and this plant is very susceptible to rot.
