Repotting My Elephant Foot Vine (Dioscorea elephantipes)

- In this video I repot my elephant foot vine (Dioscorea elephantipes) into a new larger pot. My elephant foot vine has grown well since my last update and now needs a bigger pot. Dioscorea are best repotted when dormant as the stems can be very large and brittle, although care must be taken to ensure the new compost is dry and free draining so that the risk of rot is averted. I will make an update video in a few months time when my plant comes back into growth.

Great looking caudex. I have several of a different style of caudex. The ones I have are like donuts and they grow long hairy stems with bell shaped flowers, one is orange and the other is red. They were sold as Amazonian edelweiss but I think they may be Sinningia Leucotricha. Am very envious of your elephant foot. It's most splendid. I had one years ago, but a friend who stayed at my place while I was overseas managed to overwater it in her fear of killing it. My instructions (not to water it virtually at all) seemed to her as if it would lead to death. Since it still looked ok-ish she thought she'd succeeded, but I knew something was amiss immediately - it was the first thing I checked after being away, but it had no burgeoning growth in the centre. I should have given it to my mother to neglect into rude health while I was away :'(
The other plant I wish for which needs some greenhouse conditions to grow in for me is the desert rose. Apparently they live for ages, get quite large and have truly wonderful flowers. A few unusual plants can be most satisfying to care for.
Thanks for update! Mine Discorea elephantipes always gets attacked by spider mites, they just love these leaves.
can't wait for the update.
Hopefully I'll be able to film an update soon, it's still dormant at the moment, it seems to be a little later coming back into growth this year.
Anyone else see the mission-impossible spider at 9:00 ? Lol
Yes me.
Enjoyed all the vids on this plant, so was wondering how it's going, bill
Hi, thankyou for wording precisely what soil you use. It so hard to find this information as clearly as you state it. 6:50
Thanks, I'm glad my description of the soil mix was helpful.
Never seen this plant before.
Update
Yes there is an update video, it's link can be found in the description, I'm also hoping to make another update video in a few months once it's finished it's current growing phase.
Can you talk about dormancy and how long it lasts
Any updates on this plant?
I thought mine was dormant, and I dig it up only to find all of its roots has white fungus, do u know how to save it? I think it's a total loss already, but I did cut out almost all of its roots and repotted it.
What shop did you get this, also what did you pay, they are quite expensive:)
I got it from cactusshop.co.uk, the plant was very small, about the size of a large grape so it was very cheap at £3.50, but that was several years ago.
Did you ever try making new plants from leafs?
I did once with a peice of stem that snapped off, but it didn't work. I might try again sometime.
Olá poderia me ajudar com dica de cultivo, ela gosta de ambiente ensolarado ou sombra, desde já obrigada.
Hopefully you can google translate my reply: the leaves should be in full sunshine and the tuber should be in the shade.

Hello, please write the composition of the earth as a percentage. I'm a Russian-speaking subscriber to your channel, I can't make it out by ear.
He said it's 50% perlite, 50% loam soil compost, basically John Innes number 3
How old is your specimen?
It's about 6 or 7 years old, I got it 6 years ago when it was the size of a grape.
Any news on this plant please,my one is about 3 inches (75mm)long now
So it's on it's way,Bill.
It hasn't grown for a year now, I'm a little concerned with it, but as the dormancy can vary a lot and the tuber is still firm I am hoping that it will start to grow again this winter when the cooler temperatures come back.
Hoping it's just adjusting to the repotting and a bigger pot. I'm sure it will be fine. Keep us updated please.
@@catherinemichael2851 In the last few days it looks like new shoots are appearing, although it also looks like some were eaten off by slugs. Instead of the central growing point it now seems to have growing points all over, I will make a video in a few weeks once it's grown little more.
