    Seeing the evolution of drones (observation, bombardment, ...), I can't help but think they are mirroring the evolution on manned aircraft and we will soon see a "fighter" drone used for drone-on-drone action. Sounds like a good show. lol

    Surprised he didn't mention the technique of burning tires to conceal ground forces. Intentionally lighting fires has been used quite a bit in modern warfare to hide from drones and ground attack aircraft.

      Diesel fuel or fuel oil, if burned with tires or plastic/synthetics, will smoke out an entire area. It’s reported to have been used by Ukrainians.

      @@irodwen You don't light one fire and stand around it though. You have an entire force light many small fires around a city and stay on the move or stay in cover.

      @@callsignjoker2686 I just finished a radiometric data analysis certification for my job. I teach sUAS applications and design at a college level. Its pretty much impossible to hide from a good thermal and an operator who knows how to use it. I teach search and rescue to local LEO's and First Responders. Even under heavy cover, in pitch blackness, during garbage weather, you can be picked out with commercial level sensors. Outside of just shoving yourself under a half foot of debris, and even disturbing the debris will create a tell tale due to temp differences. I am also a USMC veteran and am glad that active duty is way behind me. I would not want to evade a system like these in the field.

    I do drone research, and the campus police department always comes looking for us whenever we turn our DJI drones on. I suspect they have a DJI Aeroscope.
    Not sure if they can be obtained or copied by civilians, but also worth noting that your DJI products are broadcasting their position and yours to your potential adversary. I suspect this is why the FAA is pushing RemoteID for civilians as well.
    Also, the DJI M300 has a ~50 minute endurance.

      Aeroscope isn't supposed to go to civilians but even DJI admits that they end up on yachts and homes of random rich people. And Aeroscope was recently found to be unencrypted. DJI had to back track after the proof came out. I remember the fact that it was unencrypted and the write up on the method were on Twitter. I'm sure it's easy to find and interesting for you if you are in the relevant field.

    As a UAS operator and instructor, retired combat reconnaissance and civilian UAS pilot I appreciate the in depth dive into this topic.
    Thought I could learn a few things about how to counter some of the "counter UAS" tactics but the only thing is thermal optics use and weather resistant drones.
    A few neuances are important to mention tho:
    The Matrice 300RTK has an option for a thermal camera and a laser range finder on its H20T/H20 optical sensor array, however none of the thermal optics that are easily availabe off the shelves for even the high end drones such as the mentioned m300 or the Mavic 2 or 3 enterprise models are good enought to be able to spot an individual from an operationally safe altitude or distance.
    The flight time as mentioned by the manufacturer in the specs is 55 minutes, not really the case, its past the 30 minutes mark tho.
    I would highly suggest to learn the technical properties of as many drones as possible in order to be able to expect the threat levels you may or may not enounter in the field.
    As an example:
    The M600pro drone isn't capable of withstanding wind velocities beyond 8 meters per second, HOWEVER it is able to carry a 6kg payload and its primary use in Israel is dropping gas grenades for riot control.
    The Mavic line of drones and the phantoms are wind resistant to 10M/S however on the phantom currently has the ability to drop or carry anything whereas the mavic line doesnt, BUT has the option to use a thermal camera.
    The M300 is wind resistant to 15m/s wind during flight and 12m/s in landing or takeoff, it has the ability to carry 2.7KG of cargo including a camera but the gimball stabilizers can only carry 930grams.
    These things can help you understand the limitations of the enemy or friendly in therms of when and which drone can be flown aswell as what kind of threat said drone means.

    In a SHTF situation it might be worth it to have a shotgun with goose shot, BB to T.
    Shotguns typically pattern 1 inch every 3 meters. 200’ would give you about 67 meters. This would result in about a two foot pattern. Even #4 buck (if you needed more versatility) with 27 .22cal pellets should have a pellet about every inch assuming even dispersion. With T shot or BB shot you could expect a hits less than an inch apart. With heavier buckshots missing a small drone even in the center of the pattern is possible.
    As far as speed goes most consumer drones have about the same speed as a duck, 40-60mph, and are similar size. If you can bag you limit on ducks you should be able to bag your limit on drones.
    There is a difference of course, with ducks your max range is generally considered about 50 yards, this is because of the need to reliably hit vitals so the duck doesn’t suffer. With a quad copter you just need to break one wire, crack the camera lens, or damage one rotor so we can extend that range some compared to ducks.

      I doubt they would have energy to do that, 200m at a high angle. I'm sure there is video testing shotgun energy at distance on here somewhere.

      I don't see this being practical at all. I have a dhi mavic, there's no way in hell you would ever be able to shoot anything close to it. You can take those things 500-1000m up in the air and see everything. I have a 60 acre property and I use mine for hog hunts. I literally fly 100s of yards up and look to the other end of my property. It's not even realistic to think you could shoot one.

      @@pinetreeranch1333 Without some kind of guidance system any munitions a drone might intend to drop would often be down from lower altitude like we've seen in Ukraine. People using shotguns to take out the threat would force munitions to be dropped from higher and reduce hit chance, or require specialized systems and increase their cost/production time. Both are good and can be cheaply forced by a few good hits from a 12 gauge that even an old boomer might have.
      Observation however you are correct, but it's better to focus on what we can do while looking for ways to mitigate other problems.

      @@pinetreeranch1333 of course an old goose gun isn’t putting predator drones or 200m high drones on the Christmas dinner table.
      I’m talking about the Walmart/Amazon cheap quads with a ceiling of 200 feet, about 60 meters. Ducks are routinely put on the table at 50 meters, and duck shot starts at #4 bird so the pellets won’t be a danger when they come back down. Remember when testing shot shells than the SMALLER the number the bigger the shot. Then the numbers restart on the Buckshot side.
      Most people I can find shooting drones are using #8 clays loads or #7 dove shot.
      BB any T shot are long range goose loads (goose feathers are remarkably tough). BB shot is about 60 .17 calibers pellets, T shot is slightly larger. #4 Buck (not bird) has 27 .22caliber pellets. It is lethal to deer at 50 yards, so a drone at 60 shouldn’t be a problem.
      With the right balance of shot size you could certainly drop a cheap drone.

    The old school goose and turkey loads w shotguns might be handy. Number 2 lead pellets can reach 70-80 yards and knock down 20 pound birds.

      on smaller units, #7 will definitely have a very high hit probability. My trade off? My 12ga is loaded with #4 most of the time - heavy enough to knock down a duck or a pheasant, large enough spread to hit either. Thinking a 5# target instead of the bigger goose and other birds...

      @@possumpopper89 it's all about trade offs. I agree, if it's too far out, it won't do anything, but if it causes a couple of rotors some damage, or cracks the camera, or punctures the battery, a little drone is done.

    I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this...the best defense against commercial drones is a friend that's into falconry.
    Predatory birds hate drones with a passion. It's so bad, that I can't fly my drone mid afternoon. Mid afternoon is when vultures, owls, and other predatory birds catch rising heat waves to gain altitude. I've had birds attack my drones.

      Step 1: Obtain raptor, the heavier the better. Step 2: Train said raptor to not merely hate drones, but understand how to avoid the rotors; use lots of positive reinforcement. Step 3: Do not fedpoast or mention anything about oldtech + prepaid cell.

      @@life_of_riley88 not particularly no. Most rotor blades are of fairly soft plastic and will break long before the bird does. In addition, birds are amazingly accurate in their talon placement.

    Nice video, I currently develop and teach CUAS and think adding the passive RF detect w/takeover capabilities would have been a nice touch to add. Especially for sUAS (Group 1) UAV's, it is my preferred layer. Passive (no radiation of RF - EMCON) and many possible active capabilities.

    As an infantryman and a SUAS operator, I saw all of these issues coming years ago when the military was still figuring out if smaller drones were worth the investment.
    Potential counter SUAS. Drones have a limited range and need to be able to communicate with the operator on the ground. Trees, hills, and buildings can restrict the signal forcing the operator to launch/recover the drone in areas suitable for flying. It might be a long shot, but if there is a drone in the area, you might be able to hunt down the operator's location.

      What platform do you guys use? More of a quadcopter or more like a Shadow drone?
      We used both types in the Finnish army. But i preferred and enjoyed the quadcopter more. I could take out a whole platoon with an indirect fire support guy in minutes.

      Never liked the quadcopters. Too limited in range and duration.

    Technically dispersion is a tactic as old as organized forces and the bow-and-arrow. Grouping together is excellent for spear & shield defense, but spreading out was a necessity when facing archers.

    Even on the military grade quad copters wind is a big issue too. High winds (think 25-30mph and up) reduce the effectiveness of drones in a few ways. For starters it makes them unstable in flight increasing crash risk, reducing camera shot quality, and possibly causing them to unmask. It also drains the battery quicker as the engines strain against the wind, this reduces operational strain and increases the risk of parts breakage.

But the systems I am familiar with use a variety of rechargeable internal and external batteries. Again I’m specifically discussing quad copters, which are specifically operated at battalion and company levels.

      @@The_Professor_ I assume the ones I am referring to have some type of battery, but they are certainly gas-operated and not whatsoever like a drone I might buy as a hobbyist. They have ranges of thousands of miles and go almost 180 mph. I have tried to source a similar gas engine to what the Air Force uses for almost 2 years to no avail. Closest I have seen are custom RC helicopters.

    Nets could be a cheap and effective counter measure for small drones. Finely woven nets would be difficult to see on a remote screen, could catch small falling munitions or kamikaze drones, act as a low level obstacles for low flying fast moving drones and importantly be quickly repositioned to offer coverage as needed.

      I think your right about them not seeing the net, but if they drop a Grenade the net will just spread shrapnel. Also the net can’t be everywhere.

      Fruit tree nets, they cover fruit and grape orchards in them. Made for catching and repelling small birds.

      @@matthewleach1368 Totally valid concerns. I get what you're saying about grenades exploding while suspended, kind of like an air-burst, however I think even here it has it's benefits. Generally you want to be as far from fragmentation as possible, seeking hard cover without or with less chance of said grenade landing right beside you in a confined space surely increases you're odds of survival.
      As far as nets not being everywhere, some protection is better than no protection. I'd also suggest regularly moving them to further disrupt hostile drones, suspending nets high up above bunkers, between poles, attached to observation balloons and even suspended between friendly drones; anything you can do to increase coverage or mobilisation.

    I have a genuine question, regarding OPSEC and tracking of devices. Wouldn't a de-googled phone with no sim-card running ATAK on a LoRa network still ping towers and give your position away? Because the radios in the phone can always dial 911, you will still ping nearby towers, basically neutering the usefulness of the device if you were, for example, trying to coordinate civilian evacuation routes in a combat zone. They might struggle to pinpoint you via the LoRa band but they will catch your device pinging a tower for emergency services.
    I know it's somewhat another topic, but it matters when you consider a lot of these off the shelf drones people like to run off of a cell phone, and communication in an emergency situation is a top priority.

      100% correct. That is exactly why you will see most military and combatants who use COTS drones also use dedicated drone controllers that don't require a phone. (the DJI RC controller is the most common among these). However, not everyone can afford the rather expensive controllers or thinks about the consequence of using the phones so you could still use the techniques you described to get them.

      Generally speaking, handheld smart devices have an extremely low output transmitter (milliwatts) and instead relies on the nearest receiving tower to capture the signal. This is through extremely high gain receivers and high gain antennas.
      The white noise or “hash” that we sometimes hear over an open cell line is the signal to noise ratio of the gain, and that’s with high levels of filtration.
      In the absence of a receiving tower, the idling signal of a powered-on smart device is very hard to detect, even when triangulation methods have ample time for detection.
      In other words, the handheld device is basically dumb and the tower is actually the smart device.
      As an aside, transmitting or charging devices give off heat and can be seen through consumer grade thermal detection. Wall charging devices often produce a signal when plugged in so be smart about the entire signal chain.
      Energy produces waveform and loss of and/or created energy produces heat. The laws of physics still haven’t changed.
      Regardless, if OPSEC is the primary concern, pull the SIM card and destroy the device. Just tossing it in a river or lake may not kill the signal. It would be a waypoint marker. Burn the card.
      There is always an idiot who is attached to their phone so if you are with a group under duress, everyone and everything gets searched. Men, women, children.
      Be respectful, but no exceptions !
      If someone refuses, you have a problem.

      In theory, airplane mode disables cell comms. Wifi can be turned on even when airplane mode is on.

    An SDR is invaluable for spotting an FPV drone in your area, especially with how latency requirements make it practically impossible to encrypt the video stream

    Lately I've been thinking of adding a sUAS to my recon patroll, but I wawsn't sure, given the fact that the fact that it emits lots of radio signals, and one of the most important things is not to be detected. And the price of UAVs on my country is really high.

    you can drone locate with a rasp pi, dragon os, hack rf, and put it in a pelican case with a battery, screen, and keyboard. there are videos on how to drone locate, my krakensdr hasn't come in yet, but I will test it on my dji to see if I can track my drone with it
    edit, I have been considering making an odysee channel called open source warfare, where I teach how to home make "airsoft" technicals, meaning a car actuator to pull a trigger, servo motors with x+y access, and feeding a remote video camera via cable to a screen for video feed, something like a panisonic 60x optical zoom handheld cause digital zoom sucks. also considering displaying a few rasp pit builds out of pelicans on it, like one with android on it so it can run civtak, no limits drones, and other useful android exclusives. the pelican case is for weather proof turning it into a ground station, could also store dji controller that plugs in into it

      I'd be super impressed if you could find a DJI controller with a krakensdr. All the tracking videos I've seen them do haven't been frequency hopping or in a ism band. I'm not saying it's not possible or not to try it, I'm just thinking it's going to be more that set frequency and compare signal. That sounds like a cool channel.

      @@jharris0341 ironically i was a gunnersmate or weapons guy, like a ships grunt, the electronics is just a side hobby unrelated to college studies, including radio. I figured since I was a dumbfuck at it, I needed to study it for shtf. if antifa can use a feng, I should know how to use a radio that can listen in but stay secure (anytone 878 btw), so I started studying in my offtime two years so I could not be found by signal hunting or by doing stupid shit

I will probably make a lot of simple worded step by step guides with pictures along with videos for it when I get to it, I wont complete it over night cause I a m a broke college student and need to buy stuff like the pelican case, battery, and screen, but once I get those I'll make the video. part of the drone is for the fishing payload release system

      @FolkishAppalachian I'd definitely watch something like that. And if you do something like put the directions on RUclips but the firmware behind patreon people could help with the costs. If you are making a list of video ideas I'd love one on making a cheap thermal camera with analog out for an fpv transmitter. The thermal sensor I'd use is the flir lepton 3.5 160x120 9hz with radiometric mode for $150 from groupgets. For the MCU and wireless you could use an esp32 like the Drone Thermal v4 (~$150) by flytron. From what I can tell it mainly handles the video spi feed and converts it to NTSC. I'd just buy that one if it was open source but that's just too much for something you can't alter to fit your needs. If you could make that work all your need is cheap vtx, 2 cheap servos, and an esp32 you'd be talking about decent thermal video with longish range with wireless control and pan tilt for less than $200. Obviously that also assumes you have vrx and goggles or screen. So if that's not ok then you could stream over wifi from esp32 like the t-cam mini. But no matter what there's an audience for what you're talking about.

    The observation UAS must RTB. That exposes the operators position, often line-of-sight, etc. Thermal is not magic. It can be defeated. Sacrificial UAS is best avoided, but will never be an infinite supply, especially since re-supply is always strained.

      Simple, ordinary camouflage net with thermal signature reducing layer over your position might help. You'd have to hide your position mostly from daylight observation anyway if small drones are your concern. This could also work to the effect that some people appear to suggest here of deflecting or suspending a hand grenade from a dropper drone even if you are spotted from beneath the camouflage. I don't think using nets is very effective drone countermeasure in most situations that don't involve armoured vehicles, but can work I guess. It can be worked around by dropping mortar bombs instead, or anything that detonates on impact. The better defence is not being found in the first place.

    A point on darkness and drones. I made a crude electronic night vision device with off-the-shelf components, based on a drone camera, the runcam night eagle 2. If the sky is not overcast, you have basic night vision capacity. Plus that camera is IR sensible. IR iluminators are seen as flashlights. Most consumer quadcopters (specially the modular "racing" ones) can be retrofited with such camera (price under 100 euros) or even leave the original camera, and set up a secondary image transmiter for dual images (HD color for the day and black/white IR sensible for the night) in real time. Unless goverments or someone puts limits on this, decent drones with decent night performance are really close for the average joe

    I flew quadcopters on a quadcopter team in college, and one bit of insight I can give is that propeller blades are typically quite fragile, in my experience. Thus, I would say that sending up an interceptor UAS to crash into an enemy UAS could ve effective, depending on the maneuverability of the enemy UAS.

    Autel evo 2 pro 640T thermal sees all day or night. 6k video and thermal overlay. Almost every police and fire department will have one. Roof inspectors, power companies, they are everywhere already. (I use mine for search and rescue missions)

    Don’t know why it hasn’t happened more in the US already, but with videos aplenty showing their effectiveness in Ukraine, I expect a lot more extremists dropping improvised munitions during riots and in targeted attacks.
    Plus they never said where they got the drone videos used in the Rittenhouse trial, but I assume government agencies are already using them anytime there’s a riot or protest. They’ll try to use them to prosecute you, but never to clear your name.

      they used a large UAV allegedly on loan from the US customs and border protection. probably either a Hermes 450, MQ-9 Guardian, or an MQ-1 Predator.

      @@ronfox5519 there are receivers that can detect drone control signals and some even allow blocking or interception and takeover. They aren't cheap though. You can probably see what common commercial frequencies are used by drones and get a cheap RF meter but you might get interference from random things.

    Thanks for the update. It would be interesting to see what counter drone tech we could come up with. Thermal can spot a drone but the field of view makes it ineffective because you would need to spend your entire life scanning. A shotgun with birdshot works but they don't have to fly low.

    It seems to me having your own drone(s) may be a good counter, and may very well be one of the things developed. Consider if you put a cheap omni directional microphone on your drone and had it loitering above your location. My guess is there is way more anti drone tactics, etc. being developed, but it's not exactly being advertised.

    There are thermal resistant fabrics that stay camouflaged under ir light available to the public, as well as several thermal suit instructions and patterns. Rifle covers as well as footprint thermal barriers. Get tips from bow hunters on how to use camo to your advantage, many have perfected the art and are better than military trainers. You have to use your head, so get it on straight and you will still have it tomorrow.

    Use scanned sdr w/tunable preamp to detect them and simple phased ecm array to jam. Most vehicles have sufficient power surplus to jam a low power low altitude drone. If they are close in even a low power EMP can knock out their receiver. Getting a bit more ambitious, a small low powered pulsed vehicle mounted laser with the right optical package could easily locate target and blind it. The high altitude satellite linked guys deploying proper munitions are a different can of worms but can still be disabled with reasonable ECM... barring that, hack the data stream like Iran did. Bottom line, kinetic solutions are impractical this requires tools.

    It’s simple enough to make a counter uas drone that will home in on emissions, that is completely autonomous, and even patrol around you. Some of those FPV drone builds are cheap and crazy fast.

    I was a UAS operator in the army, specifically for the MQ-1C Grey Eagle platform. UAS can do far more than you think, but they’re also far easier to counter than you think. Those cameras are no joke until you find the punchline.

      Are those the ones the Ukraine wasn't even using back after crimea cause they used analog control and video? I remember reading that Ukraine (not 2022 conflict) wouldn't even touch some of the donated ones cause the Russians could just see the video feed. They also could lose control cause this was pre fhss and what sounded like analog fm video.

      Equip your own drone with a tube of ceaseless shotgun shells (like metal storm). It would be an interceptor,less flight time but fast, you also could use it for light observation while it is chasing the enemy.

      The U.S. military already has a bolt on scope for the M-16 that will target the drone and automatically fire the rifle when target is acquired. supposedly 95% hit rate up to 600 yds.

    I only care about counter measures for drones at this time. Maybe a shotgun shel that shoots out some sort spider web or net to bind up the drone but then they would put cages over it like a fan has. Curious what they will com up with. May away to interfere with the controls and take control of it and use their own drone against them.

    A small detail on thermals some don't "see" though glass but I know of a certain company's that does "see" though glass fairly well it's a old model now. That was sold for handheld and weapons sighting. It's capable and performance hit a high end brand bad enough they bought out the company.
    Now as back on drone subject it's "funny " to see the tactics that have been unused for years coming back. AKA the stuff still being trained in 80s Infantry and Scouts basic of the "Cold War".

    Honestly surprised Ukraine’s aerorozvidka unit wasn’t mentioned. Unlike Russia Ukraine’s arty isn’t shooting is massive battery’s but rather separate guns firing using a domestically developed piece of software that allows crew to be assigned targets and be given a firing solution accounting for the users gun it even allows for the assigning of TOTs for several guns shooting but not in a battery.
    Combine this with drone spotting and you have a very hard to counter easy bang for buck method of producing enemy losses.

    I have heard of people training falcons and predator birds to take out drones and pin them to the floor. Giving you time to get the drone and disable it and possibly extract intel.

    I think this is a case where Biden's advice of "Buy a shotgun" could actually be useful.
    Get a shotgun meant for trap or hunting, put in a modified or full choke, and load it up with game loads. Should be able to bring down a consumer drone, especially if the pellets damage a rotor.
    Or, if you have money and time, develop an airburst projectile with a proximity fuse. No choke needed.
