The absolute best defence is the mk1 eyeball of a widely dispersed spotter network, around likely targets, routes of aircraft, and if you are an insurgent or a Serb, then sat at the airbase itself, watching aircraft take off and checking what they're carrying
This is why the battle of mogadishu went down like it went.... They used the same template for a few missions, so the somalis just left spotter outside the base and knew exactly what would happen

Pretty good information, I think the modern forces suffer heavily from hubris and rely too heavily on technology that may not be available when the time calls for it. Would love to hear about low tech operation without radios, some of who we consider typically consider hostile forces were actually quite stellar at it and surprisingly we aren't adapting to low tech ops. Would love more videos on command structure of different organisations too and how they function in a low tech environment.
All modern wars to date have not had an issue with technology being unavailable. Most wars aren't nuclear wars where radiation or EMPs are used to disable electronics. No doubt the military relies on technology but for good reason and if they had a reason to think it would work against them they wouldn't use the tech. Throwing away the near decisive tactical advantage modern technology offers to address a scenario which is unlikely to be faced would be unwise.

The Vietnam war wasn't merely an insurgency. The North Vietnamese Army was full involved the entire time, using Laos and Cambodia (not to mention North Vietnam) as safe havens, much like the Taliban used Pakistan. In fact, the Vietcong insurgents were effectively wiped out as a result of the Tet offensive, and never again played a significant role in the war.
If they had no effect why were they so feared? It wasn't dying in a battle that scared most troops, it was the idea of being stuck with a shit covered stick on a lengthy patrol.

Part of damage mitigation should include legitimate cover from aircraft attacks. Underground tunnels , steel reinforced concrete basements/bunkers, etc. You might not be able to get cover from something like a MOAB unless you are very deep underground, but against normal munitions you can get cover from at times.

That's BS... normally trained US troops were and are far superior, but the draftees obviously weren't the best quality. Forcing people to go to a war where it didn't have much point isn't the best motivation at all. Plus, the US didn't lose...it CHOSE to leave Vietnam because there simply was no point in staying. Same as Afghanistan, there was no loss... victory literally was achieved in just a few weeks, but occupation is costly and not effective when you do it in a passive way like the US did. So, the US left... it's more of a matter of the civilians losing hope and willpower rather then the troops, and of course the politicians...if things hurt their bottom line then they'll pull out, and Vietnam was not profitable for anyone.

Even old fishing netting can work. The idea is to break up "square, large, shiny" as much as you can without destroying your own ability to observe. Driving through a small slit isn't going to cut it. Then again, some light irregular painting around the perimeter of the glass can help get rid of those solid regular shapes.

Hey! I think it would be a great idea to normalize the use of cameras hooked up to internal monitors. (Using cheap tablets on the inside with cheap thermals and other electronic cameras on the outside or some other sort of CCTV type set up.) That way you can see where you're going but still keep all windows completely covered, preferably with something that can easily be removed while still staying inside the vehicle, or perhaps even removable ballistic shielding. Additionally, traveling at a slow rate of speed while being covered with camouflage netting could work as well. There may also be ways to insulate the vehicle to reduce it's heat signature. Furthermore, active defense could include the use of laser clusters, a bunch of high powered lasers used in combination. Maybe even with a focusing lense in front of them to create a single beam. Love you guys keep on keeping on. Let's hope we don't have to use this stuff.
That's never going to be legal for road use, if the camera is busted or water or something obstructs it then you can't see at all, plus turning your car off would render you blind as well

Enough of them will cause enough drag to prevent the helicopter from flying. In certain cases, they were tied to grenades to increase lethality.

It's harder for this kind of trap to work when laid on the ground,the wind blows them away, not upward when they are not hanging on tree branches. It's still a matter of probability, some of them might still fly towards the rotors even when they are laid on the ground, the wind is chaotic after all. They can also attach blades on the rotors so they'll chop up the wires, this might not work these days because stronger wires are available. Not to mention the traps can be spammed so much that even blades get overwhelmed considering how cheap nylon strings are. The main purpose of these traps is deterrent though because they are quite visible since it's quite obvious when you see bunches of crumpled paper and plastic bags hanging on trees so there's not much of a choice besides avoid flying near them. And these traps are not even new, they are used as far as the time of Vietnam war.

Since you need a lot of them hanging on trees to make it work, they are quite visible, even with matching colors, paper and plastic bags don't look like leaves especially with that many bundles hanging. But it would limit the choice of landing zones for helicopters. Attack helicopters are rarely affected by these contraptions because they don't fly low near tree tops that often.
I had a good friend tell me something after he got back from fighting in Afghanistan. He was pretty pissed of at the US and God for the things he saw there. He helped to start me down the rabbit hole. He asked me “how can you be an insurgent in your own country” aren’t they just people fighting to protecting their home, family, and lives? We were the insurgents. We were the aggressors and it was wrong as the military industrial complex normally is. Someday they will be talking about us as though we are insurgents. Hell, they already do.

The Taliban would cut down or burn their poppy fields and force them to work with the Taliban to attack US troops in the area. It wasn't so much "protecting the poppy fields" as it was patrolling the area to keep the Taliban from taking over areas and wrecking people's only source of income, thus forcing them to join the fight. It was a short-term solution that was better than the alternative at that particular time.

PAD protects you from attack without you having to do too much at all, albeit you should still prepare for aircraft engagement *IF* your plans change. Observation is extremely important. Don't engage when in terrain that isn't "escape friendly" or near civilian areas. *Approaches to PAD* 1. The “rocket slinging” is doctrinal. Read the US army report on “opfor tactics”. Russians use helicopters as the primary CAS asset. They do running, hover, or lofting attacks as you described. They have been doing it since Afghanistan. They are trained to do it and their helicopters are set up for it.
Still have a family member left who served in Vietnam. I know he did demolition stuff behind enemy lines blowing up bridges and high priority stuff he never talks about it outside of the occasional comment and/or sharing random things he learned during his deployment. I know he told me they spent a lot of time going through hell having to deal with just the nature of how it was fought and craziness that came with the guerilla warfare.

Yeah it's a bizarre misconception that seems to assume warfare began with the Industrial Revolution. We get the term 'guerilla warfare' from the French partisans of WWII (and of course their own debacle in Vietnam) so the misconception sorta stems from "oh the French coined the term so they must have invented it". Which is... absurd. It'd be like saying the concept of 'Logistics' was invented in the 20th century, lol. The TERM might have been coined about then, but every army in history has relied on logistics. Every army in history has learned about ambushes, camouflage, concealment, ect to various degrees and to various levels of competence. What sets modern warfare apart is the consolidation and refinement of many historical practices. We didn't invent them recently, just tweaked and improved the ideas. Adam Smith is considered the "Father of economics" b/c he was the first to scientifically begin to study and analyze how economies function. Economies didn't get invented in the 18th century, just quantified for the first time.

I assume these tactics also mitigate the likelihood of attacks by cruise or ballistic missiles as well. If they can't see you, they can't target you with them. However, the ongoing war in Ukraine shows that one or two guys in a foxhole or trench ARE easy targets for killer drones. Ukraine is busy picking them off with drones right now. The Vietcong would have been decimated if the U.S. had the likes of Reaper or Bayraktar drones that can loiter for long periods of time while looking for any sign of movement.
I don't think Ukraine is doing as well as you think it is. They are using mostly civilian drones anyway, and attaching small explosive devices on them and dropping them on enemy. Those things don't have a long loitering time, and Ukraine doesn't have any reaper drones. You statement also assumes lack of anti drone tech (which is available to civilians btw) and drones getting shot down (by firearms or MANPADS).

I see many scopes in the present conflict in which the flip-up caps are flipped 180°'s. Shouldn't they be only 90°'s? I know eye relief can be too close on older scopes, but isn't the front facing one essentially another mirror?
Would draping camo netting or veil over a vehicle window not be effective and safe for concealment? It does reduce visibility and isnt perfectly effective but it can work if you take some drawbacks.

As he says, smoke draws the eye. Drawing the attention of the defenders and notifying the enemy command exactly where your landing zones are may have been counter intuitive. Also remember the context of the fact that the 23rd Ghost Army (whose patch inspired this very channel's icon) had successfully deceived the enemy command into thinking the landing would be further east at Calais. Possible the allied decisions looked to make the most of this intel win.

The USA got beat in Vietnam in DC and Paris, not in the field. USA won nearly every battle it fought, but the civilian government lost it. THAT is our greatest advantage. Don't worry about the military - worry about the guys holding their leashes.
Amazing what some high powered magnum and express hunting rounds will do to body armor - and as accurate as some "fudds" are out there with their hunting pieces, you can choose to go right around the edges, even though you really don't need to. They may not be able to punch through in 1 shot, but putting a dent 2+" deep into the soft side even with the intermediate padding tells you that ribs will be broken. And that's at 100m+. And lets not even talk about the really gonzo .50BMG guys out here in the sticks...

The absolute best defence is the mk1 eyeball of a widely dispersed spotter network, around likely targets, routes of aircraft, and if you are an insurgent or a Serb, then sat at the airbase itself, watching aircraft take off and checking what they're carrying

Pretty good information, I think the modern forces suffer heavily from hubris and rely too heavily on technology that may not be available when the time calls for it. Would love to hear about low tech operation without radios, some of who we consider typically consider hostile forces were actually quite stellar at it and surprisingly we aren't adapting to low tech ops.

The Vietnam war wasn't merely an insurgency. The North Vietnamese Army was full involved the entire time, using Laos and Cambodia (not to mention North Vietnam) as safe havens, much like the Taliban used Pakistan. In fact, the Vietcong insurgents were effectively wiped out as a result of the Tet offensive, and never again played a significant role in the war.
If they had no effect why were they so feared? It wasn't dying in a battle that scared most troops, it was the idea of being stuck with a shit covered stick on a lengthy patrol.
Plus the US didn't lose...it chose to move out because people back home saw no point. I thought this channel was more factual

Part of damage mitigation should include legitimate cover from aircraft attacks. Underground tunnels , steel reinforced concrete basements/bunkers, etc. You might not be able to get cover from something like a MOAB unless you are very deep underground, but against normal munitions you can get cover from at times.
The e tool is your friend. Earthworks are the most effective and low cost passive air defense

That's BS... normally trained US troops were and are far superior, but the draftees obviously weren't the best quality. Forcing people to go to a war where it didn't have much point isn't the best motivation at all. Plus, the US didn't lose...it CHOSE to leave Vietnam because there simply was no point in staying. Same as Afghanistan, there was no loss... victory literally was achieved in just a few weeks, but occupation is costly and not effective when you do it in a passive way like the US did. So, the US left... it's more of a matter of the civilians losing hope and willpower rather then the troops, and of course the politicians...if things hurt their bottom line then they'll pull out, and Vietnam was not profitable for anyone.

For guerrillas, a screen could be put over reflective glass. It won't eliminate ALL reflection, but it will definitely reduce it.
Even old fishing netting can work. The idea is to break up "square, large, shiny" as much as you can without destroying your own ability to observe. Driving through a small slit isn't going to cut it. Then again, some light irregular painting around the perimeter of the glass can help get rid of those solid regular shapes.

Hey! I think it would be a great idea to normalize the use of cameras hooked up to internal monitors. (Using cheap tablets on the inside with cheap thermals and other electronic cameras on the outside or some other sort of CCTV type set up.) That way you can see where you're going but still keep all windows completely covered, preferably with something that can easily be removed while still staying inside the vehicle, or perhaps even removable ballistic shielding. Additionally, traveling at a slow rate of speed while being covered with camouflage netting could work as well. There may also be ways to insulate the vehicle to reduce it's heat signature. Furthermore, active defense could include the use of laser clusters, a bunch of high powered lasers used in combination. Maybe even with a focusing lense in front of them to create a single beam. Love you guys keep on keeping on. Let's hope we don't have to use this stuff.
That's never going to be legal for road use, if the camera is busted or water or something obstructs it then you can't see at all, plus turning your car off would render you blind as well

Enough of them will cause enough drag to prevent the helicopter from flying. In certain cases, they were tied to grenades to increase lethality.

It's harder for this kind of trap to work when laid on the ground,the wind blows them away, not upward when they are not hanging on tree branches. It's still a matter of probability, some of them might still fly towards the rotors even when they are laid on the ground, the wind is chaotic after all. They can also attach blades on the rotors so they'll chop up the wires, this might not work these days because stronger wires are available. Not to mention the traps can be spammed so much that even blades get overwhelmed considering how cheap nylon strings are. The main purpose of these traps is deterrent though because they are quite visible since it's quite obvious when you see bunches of crumpled paper and plastic bags hanging on trees so there's not much of a choice besides avoid flying near them. And these traps are not even new, they are used as far as the time of Vietnam war.
@@nobodyherepal3292 It's less like a trap and more like an obstacle I'd say. Since you need a lot of them hanging on trees to make it work, they are quite visible, even with matching colors, paper and plastic bags don't look like leaves especially with that many bundles hanging. But it would limit the choice of landing zones for helicopters. Attack helicopters are rarely affected by these contraptions because they don't fly low near tree tops that often.

I had a good friend tell me something after he got back from fighting in Afghanistan. He was pretty pissed of at the US and God for the things he saw there. He helped to start me down the rabbit hole. He asked me “how can you be an insurgent in your own country” aren’t they just people fighting to protecting their home, family, and lives? We were the insurgents. We were the aggressors and it was wrong as the military industrial complex normally is. Someday they will be talking about us as though we are insurgents. @@rm-gh1co income was a major driving force in local tribes working with the Taliban. The main income for some of those local tribes was from their poppy crop. The Taliban would cut down or burn their poppy fields and force them to work with the Taliban to attack US troops in the area. It wasn't so much "protecting the poppy fields" as it was patrolling the area to keep the Taliban from taking over areas and wrecking people's only source of income, thus forcing them to join the fight. It was a short-term solution that was better than the alternative at that particular time.

Another example of Passive Air Defense not mentioned in the video is the Vietnamese fighting extremely close to US soldiers to defend against air strikes as air support would be less likely to bomb targets if that meant US soldiers could be caught up as collateral damage.

📒 *Passive Air Defence - PAD* 📒
Decide if you will engage an attacking aircraft or not. Select strict criteria(1) for engagement, disseminate this to your group/network & adhere to it strictly.
Civilians have limited options when it comes to defending themselves from hostile, & armed, planes & helicopters. However lessons can still be learned & applied from the Vietnam 🇻🇳 war to a civilian context.
*Passive vs Active Air Defense*
The latter involves engaging hostile aircraft (kinetic options). The former involves doing things that passively protect yourself from air-based attacks.
PAD protects you from attack without you having to do too much at all, albeit you should still prepare for aircraft engagement *IF* your plans change.
Observation is extremely important. Don't engage when in terrain that isn't "escape friendly" or near civilian areas.
*Approaches to PAD*
1. Attack avoidance
Camouflage & concealment is key!
• No visible target = far less chance of attack.
• If concealed in a steep valley or cave = less vectors on offer for enemy fire.
1.1 *Sitting*
Selecting the best spot for an air defence should be based on finding terrain favourable to defensive operations e.g. enemy is easily seen when approaching & there are no obstacles for a ground escape.
1.2 *Discipline*
• not leaving tracks.
• personal camouflage strictly adhered to.
1.3 *Construction*
• Constrcuting cover & concealment using natural materials to impede overhead observation e.g. tunnels, bunkers.
• build decoys in non-essential & less frequented areas.
2. *Damage Mitigation* (dispersion)
• spread out your forces so a single munitions can't cause severe & multiple fatalities.
• civilians & inexperienced soldiers, if under fire, struggle to maintain dispersion disciple.
*Special Considerations for Convoys*
• convoys are a juicy 🎯 for air attack.
• convoys draw attention as they cast a shadow, create dust, create shine hazards (windows) etc.
• schedule movement during the night-time or during precipition / cloud cover.
• avoid "IED alleys".
• use smoke to obscure / confuse the precise position of your vehicle (after detection). You can use also use this as a decoy before the movement of a planned convoy.
• if ambushed via land push on through.
• if attacked via air it is best to seek cover (e.g. wooded treeline).
(1) You may decide to NOT engage fixed-winged aircraft yet target helicopters in identified landing zones.

The “rocket slinging” is doctrinal. Read the US army report on “opfor tactics”. Russians use helicopters as the primary CAS asset. They do running, hover, or lofting attacks as you described. They have been doing it since Afghanistan. They are trained to do it and their helicopters are set up for it.
My grandfather died last January from agent orange. He was in both Korea and Vietnam.
Had two older cousins serve in Vietnam. Both died unusually early. One was likely affected by Agent Orange. Both were honorable men.

Still have a family member left who served in Vietnam. I know he did demolition stuff behind enemy lines blowing up bridges and high priority stuff he never talks about it outside of the occasional comment and/or sharing random things he learned during his deployment. I know he told me they spent a lot of time going through hell having to deal with just the nature of how it was fought and craziness that came with the guerilla warfare.

Yeah it's a bizarre misconception that seems to assume warfare began with the Industrial Revolution. We get the term 'guerilla warfare' from the French partisans of WWII (and of course their own debacle in Vietnam) so the misconception sorta stems from "oh the French coined the term so they must have invented it". Which is... absurd. It'd be like saying the concept of 'Logistics' was invented in the 20th century, lol. The TERM might have been coined about then, but every army in history has relied on logistics. Every army in history has learned about ambushes, camouflage, concealment, ect to various degrees and to various levels of competence. What sets modern warfare apart is the consolidation and refinement of many historical practices. We didn't invent them recently, just tweaked and improved the ideas. Adam Smith is considered the "Father of economics" b/c he was the first to scientifically begin to study and analyze how economies function. Economies didn't get invented in the 18th century, just quantified for the first time.

I assume these tactics also mitigate the likelihood of attacks by cruise or ballistic missiles as well. If they can't see you, they can't target you with them. However, the ongoing war in Ukraine shows that one or two guys in a foxhole or trench ARE easy targets for killer drones. Ukraine is busy picking them off with drones right now. The Vietcong would have been decimated if the U.S. had the likes of Reaper or Bayraktar drones that can loiter for long periods of time while looking for any sign of movement.

I don't think Ukraine is doing as well as you think it is. They are using mostly civilian drones anyway, and attaching small explosive devices on them and dropping them on enemy. Those things don't have a long loitering time, and Ukraine doesn't have any reaper drones. You statement also assumes lack of anti drone tech (which is available to civilians btw) and drones getting shot down (by firearms or MANPADS).
@@huwhitecavebeast1972 Clearly Russia isn't either, because despite their shooting Ukrainian drones down daily, Ukraine keeps killing enemy troops with drones.

I see many scopes in the present conflict in which the flip-up caps are flipped 180°'s. Shouldn't they be only 90°'s? I know eye relief can be too close on older scopes, but isn't the front facing one essentially another mirror?

Would draping camo netting or veil over a vehicle window not be effective and safe for concealment? It does reduce visibility and isnt perfectly effective but it can work if you take some drawbacks.

As he says, smoke draws the eye. Drawing the attention of the defenders and notifying the enemy command exactly where your landing zones are may have been counter intuitive. Also remember the context of the fact that the 23rd Ghost Army (whose patch inspired this very channel's icon) had successfully deceived the enemy command into thinking the landing would be further east at Calais. Possible the allied decisions looked to make the most of this intel win.

The USA got beat in Vietnam in DC and Paris, not in the field. USA won nearly every battle it fought, but the civilian government lost it. THAT is our greatest advantage. Don't worry about the military - worry about the guys holding their leashes.

Snipers are a demoralizing weapon. There are millions of potential snipers in America. Her enemies would do well to remember that.
Amazing what some high powered magnum and express hunting rounds will do to body armor - and as accurate as some "fudds" are out there with their hunting pieces, you can choose to go right around the edges, even though you really don't need to.
They may not be able to punch through in 1 shot, but putting a dent 2+" deep into the soft side even with the intermediate padding tells you that ribs will be broken. And that's at 100m+.
And lets not even talk about the really gonzo .50BMG guys out here in the sticks...

Having grown up in the Sixties, being torn one way and then the other by the various social movements, as well as the war; I've always wondered how different this current era would be had we succeeded in Vietnam.
What did Afghanistan tell you?
We weren't meant to succeed. The war was not to be won, but to be continuous.
